During the 2011 offseason, quarterback Peyton Manning spent time in the Colorado Rockies clubhouse, where his good friend and former college teammate Todd Helton played.
It’s safe to say that during his time at Coors Field, Manning didn’t work on his sliding technique.
During the second quarter of Denver’s win at Carolina, Manning scrambled for a 6-yard gain. He attempted to slide at the end of the run, but it was a little less than graceful.
During his weekly media availability on Wednesday, the quarterback treated his slide attempt during the team’s 36-14 win over Carolina with a sense of humor.
“All of them,” Manning said with a smile when asked if anyone on the team gave him a hard time about the awkward-looking slide. “It’s not even worth explaining what happened because it looked bad. The fact that my knee brace got caught, nobody wants to hear that. It is what it is, as they say, and it’s right there on film. I’m very aware that it’s fair game for criticism and ridicule and I have plenty thick enough skin to handle it.”
As seen on NFL Network’s Sound FX, Head Coach John Fox greeted Manning with some advice at the end of that series.
“I told them, the next time you think about running, throw it instead,” Fox said with a laugh.
Sitting next to Manning on the bench late in the game, cornerback Omar Bolden chimed in.
“Hey, you know after we get this W – we’re talking about that slide,” the rookie told the 15th-year pro.
“I hear you,” Manning replied. “That’s fair.”
Though fans and some players on the sidelines were concerned at first, the play ended up being a harmless case of Manning’s knee brace getting caught in the grass.
The four-time NFL MVP is known for his tireless work ethic and focus with which he approaches every practice and game. He’s also known for his sense of humor off the field that has been showcased in various commercials and on Saturday Night Live.
In a win, Manning and his teammates were able to laugh it off.
“Peyton handles that stuff good,” tight end Jacob Tamme said. “We all gave him a little bit of a hard time about how funky that ended up looking.”

Everybody EXCEPT Eric Decker!
That’s cuz he didn’t want to be reminded of the stumble…..lol!
My comment got removed
My appologies to the moderator and those on this site if it was inapropraite.
RBF1 most definitely. The 40 yard line better not trip Deck on Sunday or else! LOL
RH that’s happened to me!
RH709 it happens to all of us at some point and some removals are very Random. I had a comment removed that was even more benign than what I have just written here…… go figure ?
MAN I WAS LAUGHING WHEN BOLDEN WAS TALKING MANNING ABOUT THE SLIDE LOL
See… If Omar can give him crap he truly is the leader of this team. Nothing fazes him. Tom Brady would throw a hissy fit if someone ribbed him about a slide like that!
Lol – cat!!
Wow – didn’t realize Demaryius could possibly go over 1000 yds for the season on Sunday!
That would great to see in front of the home crowd!
Hey man, I had a dream that he caught two TD on Sunday! I’m with you Royal… Is be awesome if Demaryius when for 1000 yards… Better yet if it was Peyton’s 421st touchdown.
I WONDER IF EDDIE ROYAL IS GONNA GET BOOED OR CHEERED FROM EVERYONE IN BRONCOS COUNTRY..
BOOED!! LOL
Rosario too
When Manning got up walking after that slide he looked exactly like Craig Morton did all the time.
All the youngsters are going to have to research that one and all the old timers will have a good laugh, LOL.
Cat has got the football buddy lingo down, “hey man”, that’s funny sounding for a young woman teacher, you probably don’t address your students that way tough, LOL.
I’ll be there but I won’t boo him, unless he scores against us….lol!
LOL I picked that up hereon the blog!
Did Morton really look like that? I’m going to have to go look at old film…
Totally jealous that you get to go, Royal!
Absolutely, that looked like Morton in the pocket on a GOOD day.
Too funny!
But we got him in his later years, he wasn’t always like that, was in much better shape legs wise during all his years with the Cowboys.
I love school teachers. My Mom taught for 30 yrs and my wife is also a teacher.
Think I told you that before cat! It’s cool to let your hair down outside of work…
I mean Morton had a lot of football under his belt:
Dallas Cowboys (1965-1974)
New York Giants (1974-1976)
Denver Broncos (1977-1982)
They don’t have a lot on you tube about Craig Morton, but from the little I saw, I get what you’re saying Bay.
Thanks, Royal. I don’t talk the way I talk on here in public.
Well, Peyton is tons more athletic this year than I’ve seen him in years. Y’all can LOL at that if you’d like, but honestly, I haven’t seen him move as much as he has this year in ages.
He played longer than Elway, now that’s amazing!!!!
That’s really amazing, considering the rules protect the QB a lot more now then they did back then.
That’s because he just had a year off, the layoff really helps as you get up in age.
The jump roping might help too
Yeah, he was basically ready for a wheelchair when he was done…. They use to make them tough in the NFL back then, the word divas hadn’t been invented yet, haha.
Ryan Matthews might be out in Sunday.
*on
All I know from personal experience is in my athletic life I could do anything with my body my mind wanted it to do until 37. After that the decline was very quick where the body could no longer do what the mind told it to do, just the age Elway called it quit so I totally identified with him.
I bet. I can only imagine how beat up he got. Wow.
New blog
MAN I HOPE ROYAL DONT SCORE ON US BUT HARRIS DID A GREAT JOB AGAINST HIM..AND I THINK CARTER WOULD TWO..AND MAYBE D.J GETS HIS HIT HE WANTED TO GET ON ROYAL..ROSARIO PROBABLY WILL GET BOOED
Cat, I agree with Manning looking more athletic than in the past. He seems very driven. Imagine the Colts at Broncos in the Divisional round of the Playoffs…Manning is foaming at the mouth for that one, I promise you. This weekend will be tough, though. The Chargers are very talented and their season is on the line. Ours is not. For all of you going to the game, you better be loud as FUDGE!! This game will come down to the same boring stuff. We better protect Manning and hit Rivers…that’s what football is!
Schmidt
You guys think Manning (& all players in general) will share their knowledge of their former teammates with their current teammates/coaches?
