Editor’s Note: DenverBroncos.com’s Stuart Zaas is in New Orleans working for the NFL during Super Bowl week. He will check in from time to time with updates leading up to the game on Sunday.
The story of the Harbaugh brothers has been front and center this week as Jim and John Harbaugh prepare to coach the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, respectively in Super Bowl XLVII.
They aren’t the only pair of NFL siblings in town this week however, as the Manning family has gathered in New Orleans as well.
After accepting his FedEx Air Player of the Year Award at the NFL’s 2nd annual NFL Honors show, Manning was asked if he had any advice for the coaching brothers.
“Those guys don’t need any advice,” Manning said. “I know my dad can certainly sympathize with their parents. At the end of the game tomorrow night is going to be one of the sons on cloud nine, the other is going to be very disappointed.”
Peyton and Eli Manning have squared off twice in their careers, once in 2006 and once in ’10. Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts won both of those meetings.
Manning said regardless of Sunday’s outcome, he has been impressed with the way the family has handled having interests in both sides of the game.
“I think the family has handled the entire week very well and you can tell they are a very strong, close-knit family that truly support and love one another,” Manning said. “That’s been very inspiring to see. Neither of them would be in this game if they weren’t excellent coaches. No matter who wins this game, in my opinion, they’re still excellent coaches. That’s just a matter of fact.”

Brandon Stokley once accidentally slapped a refs hand and was ejected. Williams shoves a ref and nothing happens.
RH, i remember that. i thought williams should have been ejected. oh well.
yea, i use like the ravens. but just cant root for the team that beats us. i have always been like that. just to faithful to my Broncos. anyways good game, the 49ers almost had it. i believe it was bad offensive play calling at the end. should have had a screen or a kap run. throwing to crabtee after he has been covered for most of the game.
The Ravens have gotten away with murder with a lot of Ref calls this whole playoffs. That was defensive holding. However, it is what it is. The game has been decided … times like that is when challenging a call should be possible. The game moves so fast I can see how a ref could miss it. But it was blatant and he held and impeded the route. Winning a superbowl from a PI call is about as bad as losing a superbowl because of no PI call. The Ref should have done his job. Congrats to the Ravens. They finished this one the way they started their playoff run against the broncos …. with help from the refs.
Good Game though.
TRB
That call couldve gone either way. Yes the defender was holding but the receiver was pushing on him as well. That is why there was a no call. As much as it sucks the refs do that often.
Also I dont think this game wouldve been close has there not been a power outage IMO. Ravens had all the momentum and the Niners had the life sucked out of them. Then the power went out and the momentum was erased and the Niners were able to get there heads back into the game.
BT I wouldnt mind Reed. He could come in and boost our safety play and help mentor our young guys. But my gut tells me he is going to NE.
Big surprise, I see North California fans crying foul today, haha!
This one proves that nice guys do finish last in the NFL!
Players that is because the weird part is John Harbaugh is the nice coach in this one and I respect him dearly while I loathe his bad arse wanna be overreacting brother, what’s up with that, did the milk man have a part in it?
End result though is this is by far the best result for me, arrogant niners have finally lost a SB, I just couldn’t stomach ANY team going 6-0 in the SB. At least the Steelers lost a couple of them.
Sorry California I guess all you’re left with for now are your high taxes, enjoy, LOL!
And by my own post, I just figured why Bill Cowher was the only one on the SB network to pick the Ravens to win, he simply didn’t want the niners to look like they have a better SB record than his Steelers, 6-0 vs. 6-2. Well thought out Bill, throw all the stupid x’s and o’s so many are so proud to throw around and go with whatever you feel. I mean, look at our loss to the Ravens, we had all the x’s and o’s covered in that one, at least everybody thought so. Same yesterday, all the self-called experts shot themselves in the foot and the mouth once again and now the obnoxious ravensOne fan can revel in all his splendid predictions because his team are world champions because he told us so and he truly believed it in his heart. I didn’t like the way he went at it here with but well done ravensOne fan! Still glad you have been banned though, would hate to hear you unload again on us today even though we deserve it, LMAO!
Peyton just padded his stats all year, at least Tebow won a play off game. Why pay for a super start QB that supposedly passes better and than dont use him when it counts?? Either McCoy was the worst play caller in history or it was all rigged so Lewis could go out on top…ever see Brady over throw and throw it in the dirt that many times in his career? I call BS on the whole play off season and SB,,,Crabtree was HELD
Yes, it’s a conspiracy!
AB, the receiver was pushing cause he was trying to get the ball and the dude wouldn’t let go. No way that call goes either way. It was blatant and inexcusable. That play had drastic effects on the outcome of the game and the officials got it wrong big time.
I will hand it to the Ravens. They played way better than I expected. However, the officials blew a number of major calls. The most egregious being that hold in the end zone.
doesnt matter how you play if the refs are told what to do.
88, The whole “at least Tebow won a playoff game” is a fools argument if you ask me. Denver went 8-8 and most of those wins were just barely scraped out. We also backed into the playoffs. With Tebow, the offense was more like a 5-11 team that overachieved. Under Manning we were 13-3 and handily won each game and were very much in the losses.
RH709 evidently stats dont get you a win or a trip to the SB, a win is a win weather its pretty or not, and if you think we were better because of stats than maybe the conspiracy of major league sports are fixed is right? betting on the odds in Vegas?
We weren’t better because of stats. We had better stats because we were better. Watch the play of both the QB and the team, it is obvious. Manning makes a decision and gets rid of the ball. Tebow would miss his first and second reads then scramble around like a mad man.
You can’t win by a buzzer beater game after game and not think the odds won’t catch up to you. At some point the buzzer beats you and the whole situation regresses to the mean.
Denver was a vastly superior team this year over last year and it all started with the QB play. Substitute Tebow for Manning and we may not have even made the playoffs. We certainly wouldn’t have been the #1 seed.
Let us pretend that Tebow does get us to the playoffs. Then we would have had to face NE again with Tebow at the helm. Tebow lost to NE twice last year. One an 41 to 23 and the other a 45 to 10. No way he beats them.
Tebow got us a playoff birth last year and he got us a win. I won’t take those things away from him. However, he wasn’t consistent as a passer and without drastic improvement, that level of success was more left to chance then to talent.
I don’t think the NFL is fixed but I don’t see it as outside the realm of possibility either.
Oh boy … here come the illuminati conspiracys … i think they also turned out the lights … i hear Beyonce is a member, maybe she put in a call lol
The refs heavily favored the ravens all playoffs. Maybe next playoff someone on our team should say they are retiring. Maybe then the refs will back us lol. But its the NFL some times u get the calls sometimes you don’t.
Thx RH709. His pushing off was a reaction to being held and he must have been held pretty tight as he couldn’t even push off. And Crabtree while not my favorite receiver and a petulant child is no little kid. He is stronger than most CBs. You can jam a reciever, but when he start to cut in his route pattern and you are impeding his route, slowing down the timing and holding hands or watever … you call it … everytime. Challenging critical plays like that should be allowed or since its in the last two minutes the booth should determine if the refs need another look.
Power outage affected both teams but sure it benefited SF more it can be said since they stole momentum. But they were already moving when the lights went out. The thing about that pass play is, sure alot of bad calls happen all through out the game, and then there was stuff like the lights etc. Stuff that you can recover from because theres enough time, but that happened pretty much at the end of the game and can easily be pointed to as a determining factor. Not to say that the ravens couldnt have matched right back down the field for a FG
I think Jim is happy for his brother, just tough to lose in a somewhat unfair manner. But thats football. Im sure he was prepared for a loss all along. Both brothers but never expected it to end like that.
Anyway, enough superbowl talk. Seasons over and im looking forward to offseason
GO BRONCOS
TRB out.
We’ll be in the mix again in 2013, well be back. We just gotta play better in January. We need a DT, lots of beef DT in the draft. Our D needs more pass rushers. So DT, MLB, S, and DE/LB in FA and the draft. I’d go S in FA with going after Jairus Byrd for starters and then draft the rest on Defense. Gotta get a bruising RB and a Slot WR in the draft also. IMO
A few that made me angry…
Williams pushes a ref and nothing happens. In the same play, a raven is on top of a Niner basically punching him in the face. Williams should have been ejected without question and the other guy should have extremely close.
On Flaccos play that looked like a throw out of bounds but turned into a Boldin catch. The backside edge rusher had the corner and was going to get Flacco before he took off but the LT had hands to the face as well as a hold. Not calling that was crap.
The end zone with Crabtree was the worst of all and I won’t rehash what has already been said.
This next one has less effect on the game but I think demonstrates the lack of officiating on display. During the clock burning safety play, a Niner gets through the Oline and into the backfield and would have leveled the kicker. However, he is bear hugged from behind and held until the kicker runs off. This cost the Niners about 8 seconds or 5 yards on the ensuing kick. Yes it was an improbable possibility at this point but that doesn’t excuse the officials from doing their job.
The NFL should be flat out embarrassed by the officiating in the playoffs. Of course they made their money so what do they care.
Your postgame evaluation is definitely better than your pregame one, LOL.
I personally think the NFL should be embarrassed by the blackout more than anything, it happened recently at the niners stadium against the Steelers and they still have no clue how to work with the local utilities companies to ensure that this never happens and during a SB no less! I enjoyed the clothing malfunctions of the past but this was absurd in this place and time, poor New Orleans too, they couldn’t do that right either…
Watch out for a one or two foot snow storm during the game for the next SB at the Giants!
I will give the Ravens credit. They played a hell of a lot better than I gave them credit for.
unfortunately it is tainted by some extremely questionable officiating.
I thought when the game started getting chippy the refs were going to lose control of it. I still don’t quite understand how penalties offset and the offense gets to replay the down. One of the penalties had to occur first and I think that’s the one that should take precedence. If an offensive lineman gets called for holding and the CB down field gets called for PI, that means the QB that the ball in his hand at the time of holding and the PI hasn’t ocurred yet. So the PI shouldn’t even be in the equation and the offense should lose 10 yards for the holding. I don’t understand it all, I guess two wrongs don’t make a right, but they make for an extra down on offense.
The Ravens got away with a lot of calls..especially the last holding call. The CB had a hold of his whole waist. Complete BS by the refs.
The Blackout is unforgiving. HaHa! I don’t think N.O will have a SB again. I was joking with my friends while watching the game saying, Beyonce had taken all of the power source with her show and the result was a power outage. LMFAO!!
Getting Beyonce to perform cost so much money they couldn’t afford their electrical bill. haha
LOL
880doms I am so with you about Tebow and Payton I can not get pass that 3rd and 7 call, who do you call a pass play for Tebow to win the game, and we fire him and get Payton to hand the ball off, I don’t get it.
Playcall vs. talent is another argument entirely.
I can´t believe there are still people mentioning Tebow here…
With him we scored 18 points per game, with Manning we score over 30 EVERY game!
If that doesn’t make us better, what does??
I will agree on one thing. If you pay a guy 20 Million a year, stop forcing him to hand off on third and long when converting means running out the clock. Let the man do what you pay him to do.
new blog
RH Crabtree still pushed back which is still illegal whether hes being held or not. So the call couldve gone either way. During the season there were multiple no calls exactly like that. The WR being held by the DB so the WR pushes off. If they throw a flag its a flag on both sides and the penalties offset. If they did that the Niners wouldve had another chance and who knows what wouldve happen.
However two Ravens shouldve been ejected. One Arthur Jones punched Joe Staley post play and throwing a punch is an automatic ejection now. There wasnt even a flag thrown. The other Williams pushed the ref which is an automatic ejection.
TRB I have been hearing about the conspiracy for a long time. Ever since the Broncos Raven game because the officiating was so bad and a no call in the Niners-Falcons game.
I’m surprised that no one really is mentioning that T Sizzle Drilled PDog in our Playoff game and after that hit PDog failed to throw a single pass of 20+ yards…
I understand that my football IQ is not as high as some here, but as a casual fan the fact that PDog got hurt and couldn’t perform to the best of his ability should be at least considered, both in the 3rd and 7 Decision, and in the decision to kneel at the end of the game rather than try for a decisive field goal…
The admittance of the fact that Peyton got hurt would reflect poorly on the organization (even though the scope of the injury was outside of the original concern, the general public would undoubtedly tie the two together and use it as an instance of how does Lou put it… Vindication, however unwaranted)
Fact is… Peyton was Peyton, he had a QBR of 59 in the playoff loss and that is typical of the body of work that he has demonstrated over the course of his career… Great Stats against sub-par opposition in the regular season and a tendancy to really Suck it up when the pressure is on…
This team needs BEEF…. There was times yesterday when BAL lined up 4 guys of over 310 pounds and said ‘I dare you to run…’ and Kap showed he still has alot to learn about football however talented he may be…
LONG STORY SHORT… BRING US SOME BEEEF
Again with Tebow??
Respect to him, but no way he couldve ran us past Haloti Ngata and the Ravens period!! No more Tebow talks please..
RH07 not saying Tebow is better than Manning, Tebow was still a kid and manning is a 10+ year vet of course he is a better QB. I said Paying for Super star QB only padded Mannings stata and didnt do anything for Denver other than gets us a better win record and a lower draft pic. Until we win 2 playoff games or the SB we arent any better off beyond the illusion of looking pretty for the camera. Just lookin at the big Picture and not the stroke.
Sorry RH709
