Lloyd Excited to Play in Denver

June 18th, 2009 - 2:17pm by Gray Caldwell

On Monday, the Broncos signed Brandon Lloyd. By Wednesday, the seventh-year pro was already jumping head-first into voluntary workouts.

He, along with about 20 teammates, went up to Red Rocks to work on conditioning — a story we’ll have more on in the next few days.

“I just kind of wanted to get adjusted to the altitude, so the best way to do that is kind of jump right in the fire,” Lloyd said with a laugh.

So while he’s already bonding with his teammates through hard work, he is already familiar with one of the quarterbacks who will be throwing him the ball when training camp rolls around.

Lloyd and Kyle Orton were teammates in Chicago last season, connecting for 26 receptions for 364 yards with two touchdowns.

The receiver said Orton was one of many reasons he decided to head to Denver.

“Probably just the excitement of having a fresh new look to the team,” he explained. “The excitement of having (Head) Coach (Josh) McDaniels here and an explosive offense, the new-look defense, just the whole thing. It was very refreshing. Of course Kyle factored into it, too — that was pretty much the icing on the cake.”

Lloyd, who has amassed 2,253 yards and 15 touchdowns throughout his career, went on to explain why he’s glad to have Orton on board.

“I think what the receivers here are going to like is he throws a very catchable ball,” he said. “I think sometimes when receivers say quarterbacks throw catchable balls, people are like, ‘Aren’t all the balls catchable?’ It’s just Kyle has the right amount of touch — he can throw a fastball, he can throw a touch ball, he throws an awesome deep ball — so the receivers here are really going to enjoy playing with him.”

BroncoBailey, how bout going with a Clady jersey. he is a freak of an athlete and he will probably be in Denver for quite some time.

  2. broncochick1 says:

Really concerned about the direction of our team the more I read. Orton is not a long term solution. Hopefully, Brandstater is doing well in practice. This could be a long year.

  3. florio's_mom says:

    broncochick1-

How can you be that concerned about the team, we haven’t even played a game?

  4. brian_schneider says:

With McDaniels coaching Orton, he could..COULD..be a long term solution. No one’s given Orton a chance. I think that as long as Orton can show improvement in McDaniels system he might be the one. That’s not to say that Brandstater may come in to play in a couple of seasons or something. Let’s see what Orton is made of.

  5. florio's_mom says:

    Exactly.

    well said brian

  6. broncofanlvnm says:

Broncochick1, don’t forget, Orton led the Bears to a division title and the playoffs last year and he had much less talent around him then Cutler did in Denver. And Jay couldn’t lead this team to a division title with a three game lead going into the final three games of the season. Even if Marshall leaves, Orton will still have more talent around him then Cutler currently has in Chicago. I don’t think there is cause for concern just yet.

florio’s_mom, I wasn’t sure about you at first when you started posting because you seemed to be down on this offense. Glad to see you have changed your mind.

  7. Broncfalls says:

    LOL!

I don’t understand why people think because we lost Jay that all of a sudden we suck! This team and organization was 17-21 with Jay starting. Not exactly super bowl material. I know, I know…..it was the defense right???? LOL! It’s a team sport….

I don’t understand that when this team parted ways with a coach in which case I loved, people were ready to turn it in! I DON’T GET IT!

What was so great about these 2 that you’re ready to throw in a season? Were they good caliber individuals yes! Talented? Yes! BUT WE WEREN’T GOING ANYWHERE IN DENVER!

You think no other QB can take a snap and be successful wearing a Bronco uniform other than Jay? or coach this team other than Shanny?

100 to 1 says all you naysers that are pouting about shanny and Jay being gone are the same ones that wanted shanny crucified because he ignored to fix a defense that was one of the leagues worst while he was here…….I say it’s time for change!

McD you keep doing your thing and most of us will wait to see what happens. But to start talking about long seasons, and anything else that sounds retarded, is completely stupid. How does that work? LOL! You haven’t seen training camp or played a single preseason game and you’re ready to throw in the towel….nice! Al Davis is looking for you!

Unbelievable! You know many people have a problem with what the true definition of a “fan” is. How would you define it? Don’t reply to my post and type something that has the word “realist” in it either :) that’s a cop out!!

The world of sports is filled with unpopular decisions. It happens all the time. One man or woman will stand alone and go against the grain to spark the possibility of greatness. Does it always work? nope….but it reminds me of that quote:

Insanity is defined as never making change but expecting different results.

I for one applaud their efforts but I want change. Heck, maybe I’ll even silently root for them in their endeavours! But this Broncos team deserves our support! They deserve the opportunity to make a difference to spark that distant thresh hold of greatness…

I reserve the the right to judge later, but not in June LOL!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!!!

I was never really down on the offense. I just don’t want to see Brandon Marshall leave. If he does leave, too bad, we’ll move on. We have plenty of young talent. I’m just dissapointed at how some of the personel issues have been delt with this year. But there have been good moves too, like signing Bdawk and giving an extension to casey…………………………….. Don’t worry bronco nation everything will pan out in the end.
    :)

    florio’s_mom:

Good Post! I think that kinda hits it right on. Was everything handled correctly? Pat and crew could’ve done a better job and that includes the players.

The defense though will be fun to watch! I read a previous blog where someone said BDawk will be an amazing leader. I TOALLY agree. He’s kinda the vocal one and then you have Champ out there shutting down everything that’s in the stadium.

Last year someone on here had the best phrase I’d seen in a long time. If it was original it was awesome if you stole it…….it was still awesome!

…..20% of the world is covered by land. The remaining 80% is covered by Champ!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  10. Broncfalls says:

    oh one last thing,

Brandon you one hip lil’ gimp! You better have your butt at work in 6 weeks :) I swear to everything holy!, you make me replace a #15 jersey and I’ll personally fly to Denver and duct tape you to Pat’s rear end until you too work something out! LOL!

If Denzell Washington can talk Ochocinco into pulling his head out of his own $$$, then maybe a Friday evening watching Remember the Titans can help make you realize there has got to be nothing more amazing than suiting up with the Broncos and playing in that stadium in front of those fans!

    Brandon! GO GET EM’ BOY!

trade Sheffler to Philly for Lito Sheppard. Champ, LITO,Goodman,PHONZY…that would be a nice groub of CB’s.

ONly way i see SHef doing anythang would be if we throw screens to him and let him make plays other then that he cannot block well and Quin can take his spot i feel!!

  12. ramboskithefan says:

I see it like this!! If the Broncos can run the football this season and ORTON doesnt make to many mistakes, and with a improving defense i feel we can make a real run at a wildcard…and fella’s we all know what we can do as a wildcard these days…

Come playoffs…hopefully KNowsean has went over the “Wall” and will power us thru…with orton hitting the likes of BMARSH (untraded and paid) and Royal..i feel we can have a solid OFFENSE…but i really just hope its a solid season, something we can build on in the next few years with the draft…

FA is probably ruined now due to Rookie mistakes of MCD…hopefully not..

Here’s one analyst responding to a fan question. Was surprised at his answer since most put as at 3 wins. LOL

Dev, Phx AZ 12:05 PM ET
Every year there is a team that surprises everyone with their performance. A team everyone thought would win 5 games or less but wind up with 8 wins or more. StL, KC, Oak, Det, TB, Cin, Clev, Den and Jax all look like possible suspects. Which team to you is the likely “Surprise of the Year”?

    Vic Carucci, Senior Columnist, NFL.com
From the group you mentioned, I’d keep a particularly close eye on the Chiefs, Bengals, and Broncos.

Here’s one analyst responding to a fan question

Tony, New Jersey 12:23 PM ET
Vic, how will the Broncos adjust from Shanahan to McDaniels? With the additions on defense and offense, (except for the Culter trade), do they stand a chance against beating the Chargers and winning the AFC West?

    Vic Carucci, Senior Columnist, NFL.com
The Chargers will be tough to beat. As for the transition, it won’t be easy, but I think it will work better than many skeptics seem to believe. From everything I’ve heard, the offense is grasping McDaniels’ scheme

All i have to say is that i believe in my team and the personal we have. I’m looking foward to this year. reading some of the post i thnk alot of people are making decision based on last year. i think Orten going to be great in this system. in fact i think the team going to have a better offence then there getting credit for. GO broncos

  19. mrbroncofan says:

I watched the Bears vs. Saints today on the NFL Network. Ortan did pretty good. He ran in a touchdown on one play. He did throw a really bad interception on another play. He was also playing on a bad ankle at that time. Overall Ortan did good. I think he will only improve with McDaniels. Lloyd also seemed to play well. He had really difficult reception that he made. Seems to be a decent receiver. Looking forward to this season.

  20. florio's_mom says:

Okay here’s one we haven’t covered in a while: Who’s going to start DT? I think Carlton Powell has a good chance. He has impressive college stats. What do you guys think?

  21. mrbroncofan says:

I would say Fields is first in line for the DT spot. Just because Mike Nolan knows him from San Fran and he has a head start in his system. It will be interesting though to see who takes the starting job.

  22. broncofanlvnm says:

I think Fields first also, then Powell and Parker. Chris Baker could see some playing time also.

I think the same I mean we are within weeks of training camp and its time to look towards the season. There was a tumoultous off-season but know is the time to get a handle on things as far as fans.
The team will face some bumps no doubt. A new QB new staff and system but these guys are professionals and they will adapt. As it seems if they are not willing then they will be shown the door. Marshall needs to get on the same page and report to camp and get involved with the team. He needs to uphold his end of the bargain and I am willing to bet that the Broncos will do there part and start negoiating a new contract. At the same time he owes the Broncos for being loyal to him for all the off-field mishaps that he had gotten himself into rather charged or not.

  25. m.c. the great says:

this website is a fraud. Not a bit of legit journalism in sight. This is twice were there has been great amounts of confusion with this teams star players and not a single thing is said about it by the writers on this web site. You have a “top stories” tab but it doesnt cover the pressing issues facing this team. Giving no insight to whats going on. And these blogs are just as bad. Giving us half ass stories about brandon lloyd as if he’s gona make an impact, talking about things and players that dont matter. get it together broncos.

  26. brian_schneider says:

m.c: that’s why we always bring it up ourselves. Since they seem not to update this website with the latest pressing news, we bring it up with each other with our posts. That’s why the post are never about what the blog really is about. Yeah you’re right, they do need to put better blogs. The only good ones seem to bo Doom’s and Cooper’s, at least they have interesting things to share with the fans.

  27. Broncfalls says:

Come on guys! give em’ some slack :)

If you think a member of this website is going to step out and stir the pot regarding trade rumors of players you’re crazy. It sucks because Brandon is one of our best players but honestly until it comes straight from The organization, what’s there to report? Seriously……that’s how crap get’s started……hell, we still don’t know what was really said during the Cutler meetings :) probably never will…..and who really cares now, it’s over…..

You think Pat B or McDaniels is calling in Gray from the blog team to discuss what to report regarding Brandon Marshall or what was Cutler?

Lighten up a little guys. The team is off for over a month, cut the web team some slack.

Gray and his team took great pictures and had very good updates during the passing camps. Many of us congratualted the blog team for good updates.

Also, don’t forget Mason was a distant memory when Gray and the boys hit the turf with Cameras and stories.

Relax! for the love of God……they’ll do a great job!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  28. mrbroncofan says:

The Broncos and this website are going to wait until something is official just like any other team. Do you really think that it is the teams job to report on the rumors and possibilities? What do you expect a tape recorder in the private meetings with the players. This is not a news or media website. The fact is anything they tell or give us is more than what they have to. They let NFL Network and ESPN report on all the rumors.

  29. broncochick1 says:

Listen very carefully to all those bloggers who came after me a few days ago (just read the responses). I agree Cutler wasn’t the best fit for JMAC’s offense because in the new scheme JMAC won’t ask quarterbacks to move and throw on the run as much. However, the patriots have always had quarterbacks with similar skill sets and physical attributes (which may be why they tried to trade Cutler for Cassel). Both Brady and Cassel are big, strong armed and accurate quarterbacks. All these attributes are not found in Kyle Orton… He is not big, his arm strength is questioned and his accuracy has been suspect at times. Who cares what happend in Chicago last year?? This is Denver and JMAC is not Luvy. That was my point to my original blog. Tom Brandstater is more in the mold of Brady and Cassel… Orton is not.

  30. Broncobailey99 says:

I love the idea of Brandstater… He’s a good QB for McDanver to mold into being “one of his QBs”… I think in the 2012 Season… If we have Orton and Brandstater on the roster, it’ll be Brandstater startin’…

  31. brian_schneider says:

I think that was the whole point in McDaniels drafting Brandstater. He’s going to try to turn him into something good. But until that happens let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We haven’t seen Orton in the new system in action.

  32. florio's_mom says:

    Ditto to 99 and brian.
Brady and Cassel didn’t start right out of the gate. They were groomed and taught before they started. Brandstater will probably start in a couple of years. This is the way I see it.- If Tom is competitive in camp, he’ll stay at 3rd. Next year, If Orton does a decent job, we release Simms and Brandstarter moves to 2nd. And by the third year (Guessing McD and Orton are still here) He should be ready to start. So any bad play from Orton, will result in Tom Bradstarter starting. At least that’s how I see it going down.

  33. Jamesontf says:

    NFL Network
I was watching NFL network the other night. They have the broncos wining 5 games. And they talked about the feeling at Camp, that is how none of the players trust the coach.

I guess I don’t see that so much. I see guys like Eddie, Spencer, Payton who just want to kick but and they do trust what the coach is doing?

What does every one else think?

  34. brian_schneider says:

I think the NFL Newtork analysists are still butt hurt that we let a Pro Bowl QB go and are solely basing that opinion on personal feelings.

  35. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

Yea, NFL Network thinks that we became a worse team since we traded Cutler (we did)… But they ignore the fact that we built up the team we had… I feel that we didn’t get anywhere… NFL Network says we got worse… Some say we got better… well, on paper, I say we got worse then got better making us just about in the same position as it would have been w/ Cutler…

We still have problems, but in different areas… FOR EXAMPLE: At the begining of off season, we had NO PROBLEM with QB, but had a PROBLEM at RB…. that’s changed… W/ or W/out BMarsh, we’ll still be good at WR, Oline is GODLY… Dline (will things work out? we don’t know yet)… LBs (Same thing… we have to wait and see)… Secondary we have improved…

IDK… There is too much “No they’re not good, they lost ONE really good player”, but we built up at all of the other positions…

You know what, forget that… After typing this I have actually changed my mind… WE HAVE IMPROVED (no joke though, I literally just realized this for myself)…

    “ON PAPER”:
    RB-improved
    DL-improved
    LB-improved
    DB-improved
    QB-got worse…

    4-1 in improvements on paper…

  36. 987654321 says:

    IMO…

RB-same – just healthy at the moment.
DL-improved – who knows, they can’t get any worse right?
LB-improved – BDawk is in charge!
DB-same – healthy Champ on one side and the other guy.
OL-same – kind wonder how things will be w/o a mobile QB!
QB-got worse – no argument here?

  37. 987654321 says:

    Oh, I forgot…
    WR-same/got worse – with BMarsh/with out BMarsh!

  38. mrbroncofan says:

The media is crazy. They just say what they think the majority wants to hear. When that dude from the Denver Post was on NFL Network he said that the Denver Broncos had done a good job of demonizing Brandon Marshall so the fans would not miss him when he left. All I could think about is that it is the media that report the news and all the rumors. The teams generally stay quiet. I think he was getting confused with who was making Brandon Marshall look bad. I don’t remember the team reporting all those off field issues. Sometimes the media causes the problem and then act like they are the innocent child that did not say or see anything. It would be nice if there was a tv station that reported facts and not rumors or opinions. Of coarse then people would not get watch.

  39. broncofanlvnm says:

Glad to see you talked yourself into it BRONCOBAILEY99, lol! I agree that overall the Broncos have improved also. Big improvement in overall coaching staff as well, especially D-coordinator! We will have to wait and see how this all comes together during the season, though. A lot of changes. We are going through growing pains big time.

  40. broncofanlvnm says:

mrbroncofan, That is because they have no ethics. If the espn and nfl network were ethical, they would verify their stories before reporting on them. They are no different then the National Enquirer!

  41. footballMANIAC says:

The analysts just hate us because they were all in love with Jay Cutler. Wait until week 4, then there will be some major a$$ kissing going on when Denver is 3-1 or better. Right now, though, they hate Denver enough that they’re getting at everything they possibly could, from trust in the coach to the QB and even who we’ve released (I just read something on Fox Sports that said we shouldn’t have let Boss Bailey go, even though the guy who wrote it had never mentioned him when talking about our linebackers. “He would have been a good piece as a OLB in Denver’s new 3-4″) Stupid analysts. I can’t wait until they all look like idiots when Denver is one of the better teams this year.

  42. mrbroncofan says:

    broncofanlvnm: I agree

  43. broncochick1 says:

I hope the Broncos do well this year and I do agree we are better in some areas. The defensive backfield is a lot better. Knowshon Moreno is the best tail back in Denver since Clinton Portis. The O-Line is still good… However, Orton is not a long term solution at QB. I hate to say it. I hope he proves me wrong but we do need something more here in Denver than just that.

  44. brian_schneider says:

People are saying they don’t think that Orton isn’t a long term solution. Is that because you don’t think he has what it takes ability wise, or is it because he’s not Jay Cutler..just saying.
McDaniels groomed Cassel into a starter, you take Orton a descent starter, McDaniels who can teach Orton more than he could ever want to know, Orton’s ability to excel and keep learning, Orton could become the long term solution.

  45. brian_schneider says:

Should say “don’t think that Orton is the long term solution” Damn double negatives.

  46. Marshallman-15 says:

that’s like giving someone a lesson in texting grammar

  47. Cdudbronc24 says:

    heres how I see it.
    QB: got worse
    RB: improved
WR: improved ( in terms of marshall isn’t traded, we got gaffney )
    TE: improved
OL: same ( lost Pears, resigned Weigman )
DL: improved ( couldn’t have gotten worse )
LB: improved ( lost Boss, got Ayers and Davis )
    DB: improved
coaching: improved ( Mike Nolan )

as for the question of who will start at nosetackle, Fields will start, but Baker might take over in middle f season.

  48. broncochick1 says:

For me I’m not sure Jay Cutler is a long term solution either. I never did. The guy has major attitude problems on the field and his emotions get the best of him a lot of the time on the field and that usually translates into costly mistakes by trying to force plays. However, I don’t think Orton is a long term solution because of his ability and physical attributes. I also don’t think he can be groomed. He’s 27 not 22 like Cassel was when he got to New England. JMAC can groom Brandstater but he was a bit inconsistant at Fresno. We’ll just have to wait and see boys.

  49. trigger73 says:

I am excited to see Brandon play with Orton

  50. royalbroncofan1 says:

broncochick1: It will be interesting to see what plays out this year. Orton may not have the arm strength that Cutler had, but not many out there who do. Orton is actually 6″4″ and around 220lbs. His height will allow him to see the plays unfold over the line, provided he has adequate time, which he should with our great O-line. He as been taking the crash course to heart with the new offense and will be ready for the new season. The comments made by Brandon Lloyd suggest he can throw different types of passes needed to be successful in the NFL. I did see him play in one game last year vs. the Falcons where he did a great job of managing the clock, to get what should have been the winning score. (Elam kicked a great field goal to win that game). Orton is a smart guy and is excited to play with all the offensive firepower the Broncos have. Another feather in his hat, is he ran a spread offense at Purdue University. Brandstater will be tutored and could be our future QB…time will tell.

    Go Broncos !!!!!!
