Leaving the Black Hole with a Win

November 7th, 2011 - 9:12am by Stuart Zaas

Raider fans are notorious for making Oakland one of the NFL’s most difficult places for a visiting team to play, a reputation that Broncos players enjoyed overcoming.

“There is no better feeling – other than maybe winning the Super Bowl, but I don’t know how that feels yet,” cornerback Champ Bailey said after the game. “It’s awesome, especially for the city of Denver. I know how much they hate the Raiders and so do we. It’s good to come in here on their turf and get the win.”

“There is no greater feeling in a season than winning here,” added linebacker Wesley Woodyard. “This is what it’s all about – a true football atmosphere. They hate (us), we hate them. This is what NFL football is all about.”

Defensive lineman Elvis Dumervil felt the change in crowd atmosphere as the Broncos took control late in the contest.

“That was sweet,” Dumervil said. “It was pretty loud (early on) – their crowd is always into it. We came out, made some plays and (the crowd) definitely got softer. That was a good feeling and a good thing for the Broncos.”

While the players enjoy all hard-fought wins, they took special pride in knocking off a divisional rival on the road.

“You come in here and you know it’s going to be a hostile environment,” said wide receiver Eddie Royal. “It’s us against them. We have to rely on each other and that’s what we did today.”

Good win for the whole organization. In all the team videos/interviews, you heard the guys saying all the “right” things, but u could tell morale was at a low. We really needed this…and the fact that we just kept poudin that rock, finally gave us some kind of identity. Thanks for listening to these boards McCoy and “tweeking” the offense. LOVE IT!!

I don’t like to post during the season, too many roller-coaster emotions on the blogs, but i just wanted to give my best to My man Bay. Hang in there, and god bless.

My pre-season prediction: 9-7, and said that would be enough to win the division…1 game out of first place, and a division rival up next week. Stay hungry and go get it Broncos.

Aiight donkies, i luv u guys,
    I’m out!!

I guess I can’t wait to watch film, I have to comment on a few things.

MCGAHEE!!!! You are the man. Happy to have you with this organization. You have great vision and run hard as nails. Keep keepin on. I salute you.

Prater’s missed FG’s: At the end of the first half he missed what some would normally call chip shots for a guy like Prater. In his defense, he was kicking into a hellacious wind. This same wind also took the sail out of 2 almost TD passes by Tebow. Anyway, Prater will be fine.

If you were also wondering why some of Janakowski’s kickoffs were low and short, it was to try and avoid the wind.

Chris Harris and Quintin Carter looked pretty good. Harris had two obvious blunders; 1) Picking up that kick when he had gone out of bounds. It was pretty much a dead ball surrounded by Broncos, any one of them could have picked it up penalty free. 2) He got beat pretty bad on one route. Can’t remember when it was in the game but he stepped inside thinking the route curled in and the WR curled out. Ooops! 15 easy yards for the Raiders. Carter had pretty tight coverage when he was over the top. One play in particular if his hand were positioned 6 inches differently it would have been 6 the other way instead of a 12 yard completion. Good work guys, keep it up.

Rahim, keep your head up brother. Hope you are ok.

Andre Goodman had better coverage than I have seen from him in a while. He got called for a PI that was complete BS. Palmer threw a pass that was well behind the WR. Goodman and the WR were pretty much occupying the same space and when the pass was behind them they trip over eachother trying to turn around for it. This is incidental contact and in no way was it a PI. Two TD passes were caught right in front of my face with Goodman in coverage. He was 6 inches from both of them.

Besides the break out by Royal (which was awesome), our special teams did not have a good game. They have been good this year so I know they will be back on track next week.

Decker is by far the most consistently open WR we have. Royal, Willis, and Thomas need to find was to get better separation. I believe in all these guys, they will improve.

Can’t have a post without mentioning you know who…Tebow. To (mis)quote Dennis Green, “He is what we thaught he was”. What I mean is, Tebow is raw and needs work. He is starting to show improvement. One play in particular, I saw Tebow audible to a QB keeper on a 3 and 3. Pre-snap the Raiders DT were spaced wide in the B gaps between the guards and Tackles. Initially 2 linebackers were in the A gaps, but when those LB’s stepped back into what looked like pass coverage with us showing 4 wide (2 on each side). Tebow audibled to the QB keeper and took it up the gut. He didn’t get the first but it was a good read none-the-less.

Mentioned earlier is the other thing about Tebow thus far. He has, on occasion, held the ball too long. I am starting to think Tebow is aware of his inconsistency with being accurate. So, instead of forcing a ball to a WR who only has a hald step on a DB, he holds on and waits for a better opening. This has led to some sacks, some throw aways and some runs. In his defense it has led to him not throwing INT’s. What some are considering a fault may be him playing safe. Turnovers are game killers and he realizes that more than anything, if he turns it over its worse than a sack.

Sorry for the long post. I’ll add more when I watch some tape lol.

P.S. Kuddos to the Coaching staff for venturing outside the box and trying different things.

  4. seweatherman1 says:

I just want to know what went on in the locker room at half because an entirely different Bronco team took the field the second half. I mean…we ran over them with our offense, and held them to hardly nothing with our defense. And the rest is history as they say.

  5. RH709 says:

What I saw before half time was us trying to run up the middle. Run up the middle. Run up the middle.

Needless to say it was going nowhere fast. After halftime we made them try to contain Tebow’s outside running or McGahee’s up the middle running. When the defensive front four tried to stay wide and contain the edges, McGahee had holds inside. When they tried to plug the center, Tebow faked the handoff and ran the edge.

A few good completions from Tebow also helped open the middle.

Side note: Tebow was throwing balls with Quinn, Decker, and a few to Royal before the start of the second half. I know that even I can hit a guy in the numbers at 15 to 20 yards throwing back and fourth in the street but Tebow was dead accurate with all of these. I think he needs to just throw on the sideline some to help himself out a bit. Simple but affective.

Elway said the read option is not a new thing … that it has always been in the playbook and that it had been used but it just succeeded on sunday which was why it looked new. That was what I expected agaisnt the Lions … I didn’t watch the Lions game but going into it what I read was that the DEs in Detroit play wide to aid them in rushing the passer but hurts their run defense and because of their aggressiveness are very susceptible to draw plays … Guess we just couldn’t make it work against the Lions … plus we didn’t have McGahee sooo …. u know. Anyway … im proud of them … I just want em to keep fighting and improving.

“Plane bout to take off but just wanted to thank yall for all the love and support.. were gonna keep fightin for ya and i want u to kno that were already focused on those chiefs!” – Eddie Royal on the plane ride back

Just Keep Fighting. Go Broncos. TRB

709 – not being at the game I had know idea about the wind – that is good info. I don’t recall the announcers mentioning the wind, they usually do, and they usually show us 1500 shots of the flag when it’s an issue. Can’t imagine – are the announcers going political on us???

That stadium often has wind so I’m not surprised. I should have thought of that.

  8. rayjr26 says:

OK, i know he doesnt deserve it really, and god knows he gets enough from the media, but i want to drop a knock on Tebow here. I felt yesterday that Tebow was trying a bit too hard to find that BIG play downfield. I remember one play in particular where he totally missed a back right in the middle of the field. There wasnt anyone within 10 yards of them. would have been a sweet play but instead Tebow went for the big throw. Ended up incomplete, and we punted. I do see improvement with him though so cant say much! :)
    Go Broncos

  9. daddybronc says:

weatherman – most of the adjustments happened on the offensive and defensive lines. Just some minor adjustments based on who needed help and who felt they didn’t need so much help.

Combine this with Tebow’s ability to get rid of the ball slightly faster – and those two huge connections into the end zone.

Royal’s TD catch wasn’t due to blown coverage. The defense was standing back in zone coverage hoping Tebow wouldn’t see the open man with the pass rush on. But Tebow did see it. Tebow threw accurately and on time. (Royal did catch this one – the game would have been blown wide open in the first half if he had caught instead of dropping earlier in the game). What this did for the Broncos is start to make the Raiders play honest. They had to put more guys in coverage which results in less guys up in the box and as potential rushers. Tebow’s success with the 32 yard run did similar things. OAK had to leave guys standing in the wings looking like short pass coverage but in reality they were the Tebow containment package in zone coverage. Again- these guys needing to be in coverage causes less guys rushing, which gets Tebow more time, and eventually a hole blown in the middle of the defensive line which McG took to the house.

The chess match was dramatic and Bronco Fans….McCoy won it!!!

  10. cbroncoguy says:

Just goes to show how much more of an impact Willis McGahee makes on our team than Moreno does. Go Broncos!! Time to thump on the Chiefs now.
    :-D

  11. daddybronc says:

Ray – there were two major overthrows that I recall, one to Decker and the other to DT.

I think Tebow continues to struggle a bit with passes that are over defenders. It is likely the fear of INT, but I’m thinking Tebow is OK with the overthrow as a better option than a throw away as the overthrown pass has a chance that Deck might catch up to it. Tebow is still not totally in rhythm with his receivers when they are running directly away from him. He appeared yesterday to be completely on target with crossing patterns. Led them perfectly, nice spirals, (for those of you who care / thank you 709 for letting us in on the fact that late wobbling was likely wind issues) still way too many dropped. What’s that???

Everytime the ball is thrown to DT my hackles get up and I want to yell at the guy. Reminds me of employees with their hands in theirs pockets. Because of the fact; that I don’t see DT running routes with energy, and with the expectation that he is going to get open, and that the ball is going to be there, I can’t tell most of the time if he is running the wrong route, and Tebow is throwing to where he was supposed to be. It remains possible that DT is still in the rookie struggles with remembering the plays

  12. millerqbkiller says:

man i should stop posting stuff so early in the morning i earlier posted tebows record this year was 2-3 man that was way off lol. I obviously meant 2-1 glad to correct that for you guys as if you didnt know already. lol
good stuff today gotta love winning!!!!!!!

  13. millerqbkiller says:

i think we can whip the chiefs next week that team is so bad sometimes i hope the the 0-3 begining of the year chiefs show up or the chiefs who got there ass handed to them by the dolphins would work to. if our team stays confident and plays the way they know they can we should be in good shape.

  14. seweatherman1 says:

    daddybronc,
thanks. I just know that aside from the last 3 games last year, this was about the most exciting game I have watched in a long time. What made it more exciting is the simple fact it is looking like the team is starting to gel, not to mention beating the faiders in their house!!

  15. rayjr26 says:

@ daddy… i wasnt referring to the overthrows, although there where several of them, i was talking about a play that was like 3rd and long, ball snaps, rush is coming, tebow steps up, the HB runs right across the middle of the field which most likely would have produced a first down, but Tim threw it deep instead. Im not sure if he flat out didnt see his safety valve or if he just wanted to make a big play! those are the things i think he still needs reps to get. With all the blitzes he is getting, i dont think he is going through his progressions. He is rushing (no pun intended) things, and yet at times he is holding it too long. He needs to find the happy medium. Hopefully he will improve in that area. Quick decisions, and quick reads. I would like to see this sort of time frame for his passes: Snap, 1, 2, 3 ball out! quick stuff like that! :)

  16. daddybronc says:

miller – it’ll be war in KC. No Doubt. They underestimated MIA – they won’t underestimate the Broncos.

  17. daddybronc says:

Ray – I remember that pass play and I think it was Royal that was the short route. I do recall wondering why he didn’t throw the short pass. Hard to know what Tebow’s thinking process was but I optimistically think that if Royal had run three yards deeper so that he was over the 1st down marker, Tebow would have gotten him the ball.

  18. seweatherman1 says:

They need to go at this game with the same intensity they came out of that locker room with yesterday in the 2nd half. KC has had their tails kicked the last two games, with Miami beating them in their own house. They are not going to be wanting that to happen a third time.

  19. rayjr26 says:

ya, who knows! Love the W tho!! :)

  20. daddybronc says:

Ray – My son’s and I debated that play for a bit trying to decide if Royal was over or under the 1st down. Royal was covered well so I don’t think YAC were an option. I also wonder if QB’s don’t spank their rec. a bit by not throwing them the next pass after a drop.

  21. millerqbkiller says:

mcgahee alone makes this team so much better his abilaty to move the offense on first and second down makes it way more managable for tim to get those 3rd and short plays and when mcgahee plays the chains are moving more. thus letting our defense rest more allowing them to go 100% when they need to get us a three and out. when we have moreno runnig he looks like he is doing the cha cha lol he never bursts through the whole and runs north.

  22. daddybronc says:

BTW ray – the deeper pass was catchable – off the fingertips if I recall. urghhhhh! :) no worries it’s a “W” for the Broncos!

  23. rayjr26 says:

ya, i think we are thinking of the same play, but when i rewound the game to rewatch the play, there was no one within 10 yds of the guy. You dont get any more wide open than that! LOL

  24. daddybronc says:

Do any of these blogs ever really get to players?

Willis McGahee has had a long and prosperous career in the NFL. It seems every time Willis starts to really break-out….he self destructs with fumbles. McG has not fumbled in a long time and you shoulda heard me screamin’ at Willis to get on the ground. I was almost as undone as I was when he took it ‘to the house’. – my poor wife- she thinks I’m nuts. My 20 month old just claps and looks happy!!! Me – how do I get to Tebow and McG and say, “high and tight / high and tight!!!”

  25. daddybronc says:

i’m upset – I usually have the game to rewind but I don’t this time. I’m stuck with recollections. ….but good memories!

  26. tav true bronco says:

Yea Ray I dnt like goodman either he sucks to me, I think I can play corner better than him, I liked the way bruton came in for dawk and made some tackles. Von miller is a Monster!!!!

  27. daddybronc says:

ray – was it Royal? the same play against the Lions and Royal had his man beat to the inside and instead of getting open in the flat he just jogged up the wing. I knew that play was written up with him supposed to be open over the middle.

  28. daddybronc says:

Dawk!! Dawk!! Dawk!! Dawk!! – all you veteran fans…have any of you ever seen a knee hyper-extend like that, and the player return to play on the next set of downs? I saw that and had Dawk retired, already.

  29. tav true bronco says:

Oh yea way to go Eddie Royal, I call him E-R. Happy you back in the offense!!!!!!

  30. daddybronc says:

New Blog. I gotta go anyway. Anxious to get to the KC game.

  31. HardHitting27 says:

I’ve been reading the blogs today and all good things to say today. Was following the game blog yesterday, though I wasn’t able to post yesterday, I was amazed at how much negativity was being blasted up until and through halftime. For the team to only be down by 10 and playing decent.
I was ready to blast back but then when the game turned so did the bulk of the posts.

I’ve got to say, while the first half was unimpressive, the TEAM played well. Kudos to #23 heckuva job. The D was on it in the second half and did great to keep the game close in the first half. Special teams 50/50.

Tebow is improving by baby steps like most of us were/are hoping for. Seeing that improvement, even little by little, shows hope for the team. Sure some bad throws but far better decision making this week again.

If Fox knows anything about the history of this division, he should know to have the team ready to go to war on sunday. I’m confident in the progression we’re making and look forward to another W this sunday.

    Go Broncos!!!

  32. HardHitting27 says:

Oh and what’s the under/over on Haley shaking Foxs’ hand or giving him the finger wag? anyone?

  33. millerqbkiller says:

what was up with clady yesterday our pro bowl left tackle leads the nfl with 7 holding penaltys 3 of them yesterday he is way to good to have that many dumb penaltys. hope he can fix that.

  34. since1972 says:

Great win excellent team effort, fortunately escaped the infamous w.o.s. now on to kc which got me to wondering what happened to our kc bronco fan and regular Blogger 07elway? Haven’t seen her on here for awhile. My pick for the game this week is Denver 20 Kc 14.

  35. RH709 says:

Agreed. McGahee makes this team. He was also doing some very funny, very friendly taunting of the raiders fans while on the sideline.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

McGahee is afraid of no one, you can tell, it’s his mentality, love the guy, love his blogs, love everything about him, and many bloggers here kept telling us it wasn’t Moreno that was the problem it was the O line and put Moreno in with the same O line McGahee has and nada, zero, zilch, because Moerno is nothing but a third down back, what a bum for a #11 pick…

  37. strandoftds says:

Morenos days are numbered as a Bronco. After this season he`s as good as gone.

  38. Jasmine Bronco says:

    McGahee and Royal, haha!!!
That’s the way to play against the Raiders!!
Raiders fans look scary and the team may still play dirty,
but that is just make-up and loud angry noise.
You should never play like they do.
Did you see how many penaltys the Raiders got in just one game?
Before the end of the game I do believe it was at least 14.
You play like them, you lose!
I am so happy the Broncos kicked up some Raider but!!
