Learning to Lead

September 13th, 2012 - 4:46pm by Gray Caldwell

Elvis Dumervil has accomplished plenty in his six seasons with the Broncos.

The seventh-year defensive end ranks eighth on the franchise’s career sack list and has made two Pro Bowls in the last three seasons.

Thanks to the vote of his teammates, he can add team captain to that resume in 2012.

“He does all the little things right,” rookie defensive end Derek Wolfe said. “He plays hard and doesn’t complain. Whenever you need advice, he gives it to you. He’s one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. We’ve got (quarterback) Peyton (Manning) on the offensive side of the ball and we’ve got Elvis (on defense).”

The third-longest-tenured defensive player with the team, Dumervil said “you have to learn to follow before you can lead.” The first-year captain said he’s had plenty of role models to emulate.

“You have a guy like (cornerback) Champ (Bailey), he’s been a leader since I got here,” Dumervil said. “We had (former safety) Brian Dawkins, (former linebacker) Al Wilson, and I was able to learn from some of the Broncos greats like (wide receiver) Rod Smith, so I learned a lot. I’ve been here for a while. Obviously (Head) Coach (John) Fox is a great leader. So we just try to do our part, and I stay in my lane.”

Fellow captain Wesley Woodyard described the responsibility as leading by example and doing the right thing every time, leaving everything on the field every day.

“I vote for guys that I know I can trust, guys that continue to do the right thing, day in and day out,” Woodyard said.

Dumervil was one of the players the locker room entrusted with the role.

But the veteran said there are more leaders on the Broncos than just those elected captain.

“The way we try to do things is everybody has to be a leader,” Dumervil said. “Everybody is just trying to pull their weight. Just because you have a captain’s jersey on doesn’t mean you’re the only person who can talk. We try to keep an open door policy. Everyone’s involved, and that’s how we win.”

I just heard this quote on NFL Network so I had to post it:

Jay Glazer “I have never seen anything like Peyton Manning in my life!”

Me too, AB. He really is showing me what a leader he is. I think this was a great captain pick.

Great article, I didn’t realize that Doom had been there that long. He certainly has had some leaders to emulate and its nice knowing he has accepted the role moving forward. I also have to say that I agree with Jay Glazer for once. I keep thinking of the match up with Polamalu, wow.

Wolfe, i want to watch that game for a third time. It was amazing what Peyton did to Polamalu. It’s like he got smarter? I also agree with Albert Breer… He’s adjusting to what he IS not trying to be what he USED to be.

I really hope this fires our D up and they put them in there place.

    Go Broncos!!!
