Laying Down The Law

November 7th, 2009 - 1:56pm by Chris Gentilviso

On Tuesday, Ty Law was celebrating the birth of his baby daughter. Four days later, Law was celebrating his first practice in a Broncos uniform.

The Broncos announced the signing of the 15th-year veteran cornerback on Saturday — 48 hours before Monday night’s kickoff against the Steelers.

Despite the quick turnaround, Law expects to be out there competing with his new teammates on the national stage at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

“Of course (in) a limited fashion, but I did it last year so I think everybody is expecting the same thing,” Law said. “When I signed one day before we played the Patriots when I was in New York, I came out and played 57 plays. But I don’t know. I’m just going to kind of wing it and go out there and do the best that I can.”

Much of the Denver draw for Law came from his familiarity with Head Coach Josh McDaniels. The duo was first united with the Patriots during the 2001 season, when McDaniels was hired as a personnel assistant/coaching assistant.

For the next four years, Law and McDaniels were part of three Super Bowl championship teams. In turn, McDaniels said the move to acquire Law was motivated by an inherent desire to find angles that can help the Broncos improve their roster.

“(It was) just a thing where we felt like he could come in and help us in more than one way (and) give us some depth at corner,” he said. “He has played, obviously, a long time in this league. He knows how to play inside (and) outside. He is in good shape and is ready to go.”

Another factor that made Denver a lucrative place for Law to sign was the presence of several other accomplished veterans in the secondary — Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman and Renaldo Hill.

With three Super Bowl rings already to his credit, Law is prepared to do everything to reach that same height this season.

“They are a bunch of guys out there hungry to get a championship, and that is what I am looking for right now – to try and capture another championship before I shut it down for good.”

INJURY UPDATE

There was one Saturday change to the Broncos’ Week 9 Injury Report. After limited participation in Friday’s practice, Josh Barrett (hamstring) was a full participant in Saturday’s session. He is listed as probable for Monday night’s game with the Steelers.

Previously listed on the report, Jack Williams (illness) was waived on Saturday to make room for Law on the roster.

On the Steelers side, Ryan Clark (illness) was added to their report. He is questionable for Monday night’s game.

Here are some photos of the newest Bronco and others at the start of Saturday’s practice.

You know that Shanny son is there Off coordinator. lol They might fire Gary and go for Mike. We have Indy at our house I think. So we’ll deal with them personally. Can’t wait till Monday Night Countdown. Just to see how Tom Jackson breaks down what we need to do. The rest of the analyst don’t matter to me. Especially Keyshawn!

  2. baylinorcrush says:

killerkod, don’t forget the third phase of the game in this one, as we discussed above, I believe we could have an advantage on them in that phase.

  3. Orange_Crusher says:

    Greatness007,

Elway was always making plays that Reeves didn’t call. He fired Shanny for it and also tried to trade Elway over it. Thank goodness Bowlen kept JE and dumped DR.

It all kind of relates to the question of weither a Head Coach should let the QB improvise. Guys like Payton Manning call whatever play they want and improvise at every chance they get. QB’s like Orton go exactly by the script, no frills.

No frills works great as long as you don’t need to get a lot of points real fast.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

OC, you are absolutely correct, once it was obvious that Dan Reeves play calling didn’t work for the first three quarters and we felled behind, he would let Elway call his own plays in the stretch, and that’s why Elway has the NFL record fourth quarter comebacks with 47. Elway bailed Reeves out ALL THE TIME.

  5. Greatness007 says:

Orange_Crusher I always know that. Even spoke on it of been a reason Mike was fired again as HC. Nolan was on that same staff. He told Reeves what they were doing. Shanny didn’t want him on his staff. Mike left in 88 or 89 I think it was. He drafted Maddox in 92! If he was not over that by then. He should have traded him earlier. Or try too. I think Bowlen would have fired him earlier though. lol

  6. baylinorcrush says:

Anyone who was a fan back then would know that, Reeves was like Shanny in some ways, a result of their QB’s. Great one, great results, average one, not so great…

  7. baylinorcrush says:

    fell behind, felled, LOL.

  8. Greatness007 says:

Elway and Shanny used to make plays that were not in Reeves play book. That was the problem. They got away with it cuz the WR’s would say “I broke off my route”. Or you know “I saw a hole in the defense.” Nolan caught them one night. Reeves explained it at the Atlanta SB in ’98.

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

Elway and Reeves had a lot of run-ins, they didn’t get along very well. That’s why Elway was so happy to see Shanny come in, they had a great relationship, and it showed 2 championships.

  10. Greatness007 says:

Now that comment was a joke. Wow Still with the kid stuff.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

That was a correction to myself.

  12. uub says:

See Greatness now you not a true fan now. Even though you brought that up before. Hipped other people to that fact. Now you just became a fans. I see why Chad be hitting the ” Child please!” See you at the live blog champ.

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

I still have a lot of respect for Reeves, but Shanny WAS CLEARLY A BETTER COACH!!!

  14. Greatness007 says:

See ya champ. I’ll be their at the blog. It just rolled of my back. To big for that stuff. It’s just jazz to me. lol

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

Pat Bowlen knows when to step in,and when not to,that’s what makes him the best owner in the NFL.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

    Severe generation gap.

  17. killerkod says:

baylin…thanks for reminding me about the 3rd…..our special teams play hasn’t exactly been our strong point when you exclude the two runbacks against SD. I hope Berger is a little more on his game this week and our coverage is much tighter. Giving Rothlisberger a short field to work with will be tough to defend all night.

    GO OFFENSE!
    GO DEFENSE!
    GO SPECIAL TEAMS!
    GO TEAM!

Can’t wait for another fun filled night of screaming and yelling at the TV and scaring my poor puppies to death! haha

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

The superbowl is in Miami this year.

  19. TheRoyalBeast says:

Seeing as how we are talking about QBs improvising….yup the great ones do it…and yes, following the scrip only works for so long. Improvising happens in many ways, form calling different plays, audibling, making something out of nothing.

Take Peyton for example, that man is phenomenal. only QB I know that when ever Dungy called the punt team on 4th down, Peyton would send them back and say we are going for it and Dungy would accept it cuz ITS PEYTON lol and he always made the first down lmao….Kid puts in mad work in the film room from what I hear, he is smart and talented. Or like when Brady trough a pass when he was sitting down. Improvisation….the great ones do it. Its just not Ortons character which is why he will always be a above average-good QB and possibly never a great one but hey, he might surprise us, he is still young, theres time lol

    GO BRONCOS

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

I don’t think anybody has to worry about home field advantage for the Dolphins.LOL

  21. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yea it IS in Miami this year which is great because God knows Superdome has hosted more super bowls than any other stadium (If I’m not mistaking) so it wouldn’t have been far-fetched to think so.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB If he can’t be great with what he has going here,he’ll never be great, what talent we have, wow. But like you say he has plenty of time I guess, who knows with McD.LOL

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think if Peyton stays in the league 5 more years (barring injury) Bret Farve better stay in a few more years if he wants the records to stand, because Peyton might break’em all.

  24. brian_schneider says:

That’s probably why Brett wants to keep playin’. Make sure no one breaks his records, and of course he wants another SB ring.

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

He said he wasn’t worried about breaking records, but we all know he wants’em all.

  26. Greatness007 says:

I think the Superdome got all the SB contest cuz the team suck. Jerry got that new stadium and tryna bring it there. IF Dallas ever gets good again. It could happen. It always been in Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, Superdome, and they had it in Indy. Now that they good again. They don’t get a vote no more. lol

Royalbeast is it me or did Peyton throw it like 40 time in the first Half. If not close to it. If I was the Rb. I would have been in the huddle saying” Peyton you fake it to me one more time. I’m just gonna take it from you and run with it. I get paid too”. lol Take me out the game. You not using me anyway.

We all know about Tom though. He got Galloway thrown off the team. After that temper tantrum. He can point to a ref and get the call. J. Porter was right.

  27. Greatness007 says:

Peyton had that back in college. I always remember his face when he lost the Heisman Trophy to Charles Woodson. He was sick. That has been driving him to be the best football ever. Just not QB.

If McD take the training wheels off. Orton will have a chance to. If not we’ll see if Tom Brandstater will be. Either way I think we’re good. lol

  28. lepsis-fan78 says:

i dont remember who said it but Super Bowl isnt bein played at the superdome its bein played in miami cause its the same place the pro bowls bein played

  29. Greatness007 says:

    Not just QB.

  30. Greatness007 says:

LB Timmons, DE Kirshke, and S Clark are all out for the game. They are all starters for their D. OT Harris and DE McBean are out for us.

  31. Broncfalls says:

Here’s a diet pepsi toast to a great win tonight! GO BRONCOS!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  32. TheRoyalBeast says:

Greatness, lmao at the RB statement….that would be hilarious…its like “why even play action to me when we all know u passing” lol…would be hilarious to see him run instead of PA lmao

But like I said, Colts coach is a first year dude and he is doign well, do u know why? because even I can coach to colts, just go and say Peyton do your thing, Bob Sanders, Bethea, Freeny Handle defense and lets go out there and win fellas. Hold film sessions and practices to make it feel like Im doing something….Peyton runs that team always has lol

  33. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Why is Mcbean out??

  34. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Who’s gonna take his spot??

  35. Greatness007 says:

I see either Holliday, Thomas, or Reid taking his spot. We’ll see game time.
We have some players at that position.

RoyalBeast they should of had a raffle for “Be a coach for a week” in Indy.lol If Peyton gets injured or sick. It’s gonna get very interesting.

  36. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Probably Vonnie Holiday.

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

Do you think Dawkins will be covering Heath Miller or maybe a LB??

  38. killerkod says:

I know Polamalu will be guarding the deep part of the field, but I’d still love to see Orton take a few deep shots down there early to Marshall, get him involved early and give our O some confidence. Our O needs to start strong and build momentum to carry though the rest of the game, and season for that matter. Marshall can be a game changer if given the opportunity.

Just 3 hours from kickoff!!! I’M SO PUMPED!

    GO BRONCOS!

  39. broncos20 says:

I’m cutting my last class just to watch the game..lol..

  40. broncos20 says:

OK,,its official, every analyst bandwagoners have jumped off again..they all picked Steelers, except for Tiki Barber on yahoosports…
everyone else say the Broncos have “issues” after just one game…lol
ALright Coach, let the offense rain hell of the down the field,,,sneak in Mckinley on a double move down field, they’ll never expect that

  41. TheRoyalBeast says:

    You sound surprised Broncos20,

All those fulls have been waiting to say”I told you so, the bad news broncos we expected” you would think 6 wins spoke more than 1 loss to a team backed up, in their home, fighting for their season but NOOOOOOOOOO….we have issues…Anyway like I said, thats how I like it, underdogs, fuels us, even undefeated we rarely got any respect but I will say one thing, its not outlandish to pick them to win, they are a great team but so are we and we are home coming off a disappointing loss….lemme say it loud and clear WE WILL NOT LOSE!!!

FEED THE BEAST!!! I say this is Marshall’s first 100 yard game of the season

THE SEASON IS OURS FOR THE TAKING
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  42. TheRoyalBeast says:

fool* before the grammar police attacks me, i slip up when i type fast lol

  43. Greatness007 says:

If we blitz Dawkins will cover him. If not Davis or Haggan will cover him.

I like the idea of hitting Marshall deep. I think the coverage will be rolling his way. So we should hit Eddie royal deep. He is small, but will fight for the ball also. It will catch them off guard.

I wanna see Blue Dynamite blow up the Steelers O. Blue Dynamite = Our Defense. Either D. Will, Davis ,or Dawkins pop Mendenhall right in the mouth. Take him out the game early. If Ben wanna drop back all day its ok. Lets let our front 7 go hunt.

  44. Greatness007 says:

Also I think with the addition of Law. We might run more 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 sets in our D schemes. Law is not small by no stretch of the imagination. Kinda have a safety build like Rod Woodson. Just shorter! lol

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

We got the Giants at our house on thusday night NFL network.I think the next 4 after this one are very winnable,at Wash(Portis is probably out),Sandiego at home,Giants at home, then at KC,we could be lookin’ at 11-1 or 12-2,but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.Gettin’ tired of those dummies talkin’ bout how good the Steelers are on NFL countdown, hope we shut’em up.GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. BeastFromEast92 says:

You beat the Steelers by playing smash mouth football, the same way they play.

  47. The #1 says:

(Giving BreastfromEast a standing applause) SO true! They saying because the Steelers have the top D in the League. They a better team then we are. lol We #2! If it wasn’t for last week. We’d still be the top.

Like Greatness said in a earlier post. ” I wanna hear what Tom Jackson say we have to do.” Forget everyone else.

I see from all the previous post from the morning. People are hyped up. Down right fanatical. lol

  48. The #1 says:

says* not say. I typed his typo. lol

  49. Greatness007 says:

Man they give you a complement. Then smack you down for it. lol It’s all good champ.

  50. The #1 says:

Oh my bad. I thought you left at 4:14pm. lol Thought be the time you come back it wold be in the old comments section. lmao

Do anyone thing we gonna see the Wild Horses?? They said McD went bact to a simpler Blocking scheme. Can you say Zone blocking scheme. Like we made famous. Like we been doing. lol We should have never changed it.
