Kirlew Next to Sign

May 25th, 2010 - 6:51pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos signed the second of their nine 2010 NFL Draft selections Tuesday, seventh-round pick Jammie Kirlew. Fellow seventh-rounder Syd’Quan Thompson signed last Friday.

The team’s final pick in the draft (232nd overall), Kirlew was hopeful the Broncos would select him ever since he met with defensive coordinator Don Martindale and assistant linebackers coach Roman Phifer at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I was getting a couple of calls through the draft from them,” the linebacker said. “They were telling me that no matter what they were trying to get me up there. They found a way to get me up there and I’m excited.”

Kirlew was also a two-time all-conference player. The two-time Indiana Hooisers MVP closed out his career tied for third on the school’s career sacks list with 23 and second on the career tackles for loss list with 52.5.

“In the past two seasons I did a great job of getting to the quarterback, and particularly in the last season I did a great job of creating turnovers — I had five forced fumbles,” Kirlew said. “Consistently every year I’ve been getting better in tackling and just making plays throughout each game.”

He played in 48 career games with 41 starts, collecting 220 tackles with nine forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

After starting his career being named Freshman All-Big Ten by Sporting News, he was named to the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists as a senior.

Kirlew was an Academic All-Big Ten selection in all four years he played for the Hoosiers, and he said he prides himself on his work in the classroom. One of his goals when he came to Indiana was to leave with a degree — he left with two, in public finance and management. That intelligence in the classroom helped him hone his football IQ as well.

“The smarter player I become, I think definitely my instincts are going to be faster,” Kirlew said. “I’m going to be able to make more plays and be quicker on the field, which is going to be important for me to be able to be productive in the NFL.”

The linebacker has joined a group that includes the NFL’s reigning sack leader — Elvis Dumervil — the team’s leading tackler — D.J. Williams — and 2009 first-round draft pick Robert Ayers. Joining that talented core has the rookie excited to get started.

“I just hope to get in, learn from these veterans that have been in for a while and just watch and learn and definitely try to bring what I can to the table,” he said. “Just try to go out there and compete.”

    SIGN DOOM

Start Orton, til Tebow is ready. Quinn(tessential) backup.
IDK, my assessment on the Quinn situation- He was at ND for 4 years and in Cleveland for 3, so thats 7 years in the “system”. If he hasnt proved it yet, maybe he never will!?!

    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!! (not 2011)

Oh yeah, congrats to the Hoosier!

Good that we are starting to sign our rookies. I also can’t wait to see Tebow play. I know that a lot of people think that he will either be a bust, not start this year, or if he starts this year, will fail miserably. But, I think that Tebow will start this year and will succeed and the Broncos will make the playoffs.

P.S. I WANT ME SOME DOOM FOR 6 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes samoan another barbie with the boys for Origin, QLD have this one in the bag.

Whoopee, we signed our two seventh round draft picks!!!! for what amounts to basically minimum pay if they make the final cut I believe.

It’s actually unreal that such easy signings take so long, no wonder DOOM is still waiting. I have to say I am getting a bit surprised and disappointed at how Bowlen is starting to handle the money part of it this year. I know it’s been a recession and all but he may be taking it a bit too far. I hope this is not a trend we are on, we don’t need the label that the Broncos are slow to reward their players, bad for players morale and long term success. Bowlen being a smart man makes you wonder if the cash flow is just not what it used to be and the reserve moneys just aren’t there. That would be even more of a concern. Signing DOOM without delay would be a huge breath of relief for me and the rest of the team I’m sure, is all I’m saying.

Since the “PAY DOOM” two words campaign hasn’t worked so far, LOL, I thought I would elaborate on it a bit more. Nothing super negative or unfixable yet long term, but it is getting dangerously close to permanently hurting the psyche and drive of all other Broncos performing at high levels. I mean wouldn’t it of been better to sign him earlier already, like about the time Marshall was traded, it would of been a great timing to clearly draw the line to where you stand in the organization, you goof off you are out, you go beyond all expectations you reap the rewards, seems so trivial I don’t understand why I have to be here discussing it.

Regardless of when and how the Doom deal gets done, I unfortunately believe that Bowlen missed the ball on this one and that’s too bad is all I’ll say about that. And you know it’s hard for me to say all that since I am a big fan of Bowlen and that he does so many of the little things right, like when he came out of the team bus after the game in Atlanta in 1997 just to sign an autograph for me on an old football of mine I had been waving at him.

I guess this is more me having to let this thing off my chest, signing Doom, so I can keep my head high. I am proud to be a Bronco fan and I want it to remain that way for a long time, so let’s do the right thing by our most deserving players, now and in the future, thank you.

    Okay so I wanna know:

Is his name pronounced JAY-MEE or JAM-EE? Like pajamas? Lol

  14. baylinorcrush says:

The article would have more credence if it hadn’t been written by a Bronco fan, it would be nice to see that kind of optimism from the press in general, or at least some of the sports writers, but to no avail, the team will have to show them is all, just like last year but without the collapse.

  15. strandoftds says:

I saw an interview with Xanders talking about our draft picks, and heard him say Jay-mie, as in Jamie Lee Curtis. I was wondering myself. Also I wonder if we are gonna sign Westbrook. Of the three teams he visited the BRONCO`s have the best chance of making the playoffs.

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

    alexanserg,good article,as I said before,if we don’t win 9 or 10 games I will be very disapointed,and I have said our LB’s WILL wreak havoc this season.

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

strandoftds,I hope we sign Westbrook,he’s a great receiver outta the backfield, and could be a good 3rd or 4th down back,as long as the price is right.

  18. strandoftds says:

I think he would be a good fit for us. Also I believe that Dawk and Buck are whispering in his ear, come to Denver.

  19. bronco-blaze says:

I heard dawkins was pushing for westbrook to land here, so dont be surprised if he comes here. If not here it WILL be the rams, because of their situation at RB and he will prob get more playing time.

I love Michael Lombardi and Jason La canfora…Im not sure which one was on last night on total access but they both have the broncos back and give them a FAIR chance that we deserve. One of them were asked on 4 days who he thought would be playing in 2014 in the newyork new jersy superbowl..He paused and said ” I see Tim Tebow leading the broncos to the superbowl in the new few years and playing in that super bowl”

    Dang man lol

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

bb…it was probably Lombardi,he usually respects the Broncos, and gives us good props.

  21. giddy'up says:

I think JK is going to be more then a back up,, he is a beast… and I am glad we snagged him

  22. Danso says:

Alexanserg-thanks for posting the article. I think he analized the team pretty correctly and I pretty much agree with him. I have been saying I believe we are an improved team and I will be disappointed with less than 10 wins. Go Broncos.
