Kickin’ it with Colquitt

October 13th, 2011 - 8:48am by Stuart Zaas

Broncos punter Britton Colquitt has started strong this season through five games, building off his hot preseason.

After leading all NFL punters in net punting average this preseason, Colquitt currently ranks No. 2 with an average of 43.7 net yards per punt.

“Net punts are an important indicator of how we’re doing field position wise with returning the ball to the defense,” Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers said. “Britton will be the first one to tell you that unless he’s got guys covering well, it’s not going to help him statistically…He’s done a good job, but the guys around him have done a pretty decent job too.”

While other position groups may have been affected by the shortened offseason, kickers and punters work more as individuals and did not have their normal training routines impacted as much as offensive or defensive units.

“I’d say this. With the way the offseason was structured this year, the kicker and the punter, their offseason was about the same,” Rodgers said. “Those guys don’t need anybody else to work on their craft with them. Britton certainly had a good offseason on his own.”

Colquitt has improved his 2010 numbers across the board. His gross average is up more than six yards per punt (from 44.6 to 50.7) and his net average has improved by almost seven yards (from 36.6 to 43.7).

Colquitt’s eight games with a 50-plus-yard gross punting average are the second most through a punter’s first two seasons in NFL history. He needs just one more 50-plus-yard game to tie the record set by former Broncos punter Jim Fraser in 1963.

Colquitt definitely one of the bright spot, but unfortunately when your punter makes a ton of good kicks it’s because you’re in trouble.

I just hope from now on we see a lot more kickoffs, LOL.

He`s only going to get better. One bummer for our ST was on the 81 yard kick that was nullified because a player didn`t make an attempt to go back into play from out of bounds. That would have patted Colquitt`s stats. HaHa. Oh well.

Field position is key in a game of inches. With a powerful leg like Britton’s, it can make a great deal of how a game can pan out. Keep up the good work!

That story was from Saunders, not Klis, but I do remember the N-J thing he talked about.

And as far as a Lloyd trade, I don’t think it’s that far fetched as some others here do since we all know how close he is to Orton from their days in Chicago and maybe it has become apparent in the locker room that he won’t be happy without getting the numbers he used to. I can see it happening, and he was voicing his displeasure at the game plan if you recall saying they weren’t getting him involved enough with all the running plays, maybe Fox didn’t like that at all.

    Re-correction:

Tim Tebow making Broncos center of NFL universe By Patrick Saunders

Tebowmania goes well beyond that lady posing next to the billboard on I-25. It’s not confined to Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The cheering can be heard, not just in LoDo, but in Midtown Manhattan.

Google Tim Tebow and you find a smorgasbord of raves, rants, opinions and profiles.

Here are a few to chew on while you wait for the Broncos game at Miami on Oct. 23:

Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks talked a lot of NFL folks. Banks ponders: Will Tebow succeed in the NFL? His conclusion: It all depends on who you ask.

The New York Daily News’ Hank Gola tells the story of a bar in Clifton. N.J. where Tebowmania erupted when the QB nearly led the Broncos to a last-second victory vs. the Chargers.

“I’ve been tending bar forever and in my 30-plus years of tending bar, I’d never seen anything like it for a non-local team in the regular season,” said Tommy Bouchoux, the pub’s co-owner told the Daily News. “Everyone was down and then they got up again. People were going crazy. People in Jets jerseys, Giants jerseys and women who weren’t even hard-core football fans. Everyone was a Broncos fan. That part of the game wasn’t on long but Tim Tebow helped our business that night.”

Even The Wall Street Journal chimes in with a blog titled: “The Most Loved, Hated Q.B. Gets His Shot.”

Kind of crazy how the 1-4 Broncos have become the center of the football universe.
