Keeping Plays Alive

October 20th, 2011 - 12:49pm by Stuart Zaas

With Tim Tebow as the new starting quarterback for the Broncos, the offense knows their conditioning levels need to be top-notch thanks to his ability to extend plays with his feet.

“We better get some extra conditioning in,” Decker laughed after Tebow was named the starter last week. “He’s going to be running around a little longer. But it can be a good thing because you can get a broken play and scramble out, get one guy deep and one guy short and get some explosive plays that keep drives alive.”

Tebow’s final play of the team’s Week 6 game against San Diego serves as an example of that when he was able to avoid pressure and escape the pocket to launch the potential game-winning pass into the end zone.

“Oh yeah. He can keep plays alive,” running back Willis McGahee said. “You have to keep your head on a swivel when he’s back there because you never know when the ball’s going to come. So that’s a good thing. It is going to keep the defense on their toes.”
“With him, you never know,” wide receiver Matt Willis added. “We all know that and we just keep running.”

With Tebow taking over at quarterback, those extra windsprints the team runs at the end of practice will be put to use.

waiting for sunday i feel like a kid waiting to go to disneyland !I CANT WAIT!LETS GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Carsonic says:

I swear that Rod Smith was the last wide receiver I can remember who really went out of his way to scramble along with the QB to try to help him out. He always seemed to have a great ability to come back or find the empty spot. I hope these young guys have that same desire and understanding of what it takes, because I’m sure Timmy’s going to give them plenty of opportunities.

  3. brian_schneider says:

Just from what other players are saying about Tebow, you can really feel that they’re excited as well. I know you always want to promote your QB but these guys never had these nice things to say about Orton.

  4. royalbroncofan1 says:

Tim Tebow’s ability to move around the pocket and allow receivers the opportunity to create separation is a great intangible.
That’s one you’ll never hear Hodge talk about…lol!

  5. brian_schneider says:

You’ll never hear Hodge say anything positive about Tebow. Even if someday Tebow would be in the HOF he’d still not have anything positive to say.

  6. Big D 44 says:

A little off topic, and maybe it has already been mentioned….. But did anyone else notice the Lloyd almost never got YAC (yards after catch)? I LOVE his hands and body control. But it seemed that he could NEVER do anything after he caught the ball. I feel like all of our recievers now have the ability to take it to the house after the catch. I’m so excited to see this team play.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  7. royalbroncofan1 says:

You hit the nail on the head Big D… very good point.

  8. Big D 44 says:

It really bothered me. Half the time when he was open he would fall down after the catch. Amazing hands though!

  9. baylinorcrush says:

What the players are really saying is that when they played with Orton if the ball wasn’t there on cue, the play was dead, LMAO.

  10. Big D 44 says:

Exactly, Bay. They knew if the ball wasn’t there in 3 seconds Orton was on the terf! lol

  11. 1nOnlyTRB says:

20 years from now, there will be a new kid coming in with unconventional plays similar to TT … and if tebow is successful … Tebow will be used as a way to defend the new kid. But by that time some will have seen the light and will say stuff like “That was different”, “This kid is not like TT”, “TT was a rare exception”, “This kid doesn’t have TTs intangibles” … the point is no matter what … people will always find a way to shoot down people or ideas they dont believe in. And when history is used as precedence it just always seems to be “a different situation” … if anyone remembers … it wasn’t until last year that vicks accuracy started looking truly fantastic … guy s don’t get there overnight … i remember vicks younger days in ATL.

  12. 1nOnlyTRB says:

BIG D … did anyone ever notice?!?!? ARE U KIDDING ME?!!??! I was the number one person who used to say that … glad to know im not the only oen who noticed bro. His inability to get yac was freaking annoying. If it wasn’t a straight TD strike …where he caught the ball was where he would go down. And u are right … he wasn’t always tackled … he would just fall down or slip or something annoying … used to really piss me off cuz I was/am such a big marshall fan and the reason that is is yac … but lloyd … while he had amazing hands and concentration … he couldnt run after the catch to save his damn life lol. TRB

  13. brian_schneider says:

I think the term your looking for Big D 44 on Lloyd is, self-preserving he is 30 after all and maybe his body can’t take those hits anymore. The other reason I think too is because a lot of times his big graps were in man-to-man and while he would make a great catch the CB would be right there to make the tackle.

  14. Big D 44 says:

Haha, that’s right TRB. I told my buddy to notice he saw the same thing.

  15. Big D 44 says:

I agree Brian. Many times he was in tight coverage and it would have been almost impossible to get YAC. But there was plenty of time I’ve seen him fall after a catch with little or no presence by the D.

  16. WieminCA says:

Yeah, Lloyd made a lot of catches that only a contortionist would make, precluding and YAC … you guys always have some point to criticize … I know you’re very excited about Sunday and TT – and rightly so, considering the opposition … give it 6 games – if you still have something to crow about, then maybe we’re onto something … he’s a big guy, and that’ll help him – but out there somewhere is the BIG HIT, that would put all this in the dumpster … it’ll be fun to watch, though … I’m for anything that’ll bring improvement to my favorite team – ask my wife …

  17. daddybronc says:

The thing I like is it doesn’t sound like McCoy and Fox intend to micromanage Tebow. It sounds like they’re gonna put a lot in Tebow’s hands to see what he can do. I like that. I still expect McCoy to be a bit conservative for Tebow’s first few starts and I don’t expect McCoy will ever have Tebow calling plays. I think that looks like coaches telling Tebow what his first and second looks are, but let Tebow make it up from there.

Compared to last year – Tebow has a ton of tools to work with and he doesn’t have to take it all on himself. I expect a blowout against Miami particularly after the half. Koolaid?

I am much more offense minded and I know that I pay little attention to DT’s except when there are penalties or gaping holes – but I see Mays stuffing an awful lot of run plays. The defense looks far better to me than what they are being rated.

Sorry I can’t help saying it again, but I am incredibly optimistic for the rest of the season. I am vibrating in anticipation of Sunday’s game. I am beginning to gear up already for the Lions.

  18. rayjr26 says:

well, its been a busy week so i havent got to post yet but here i am. Im freakin DYING here! This has been the longest bye week ever i think! lol cant wait to see what we look like with Tebow under center. I just hope they dont lock him down like they did against the raiders last year. Hand off, hand off, scramble punt. If they dont let Tebow throw the ball down field it could be a really long day! I know the phins are bad but its not like we are the cream of the crop or anything. LOL I guess my score prediction for the week will be:
27 – 17 Denver baby! Our defense will REALLY step it up in this game to shut Miami down and with a very balanced offense we will win the game!
    TEBOW TIME!!
    Go Broncos!!
THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES

  19. daddybronc says:

W-CA – not likely that we will ever even know when ‘little Timmy’ gets hurt. We are going to have to be perceptive and see slow downs and slight limps. Our guy will have to be ordered off the field.

Did you see the video of Tebow at 17 playing on a broken leg? – I had an amazing adrenaline rush just watching highlights.

  20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

RayJr, you are right … their defense is actually not that bad. They held the jets down for the majority of the game … and if it wasn’t for the Revis pick 6 … there woulda been no TD and no spark for them. They finally gave up their first defensive TD way later in the game. They are like us … or should I say like we used to be … a team with a pretty above avg D that looks bad because thier offense is ineffective, incompitent and pathetic. But with our New TT run O … That should give us the advantage … but I think we are more alike than most think … Sadly enough …. I believe Miami is still technically the favorite to win the game … not by much but still … wow … guess we are still the underdogs even tho we at least have 1 win. TRB

  21. BroncosLAX says:

Tebow did play an entire game as a HS Sophmore on a broken leg and an entire game on a Nasty high ankle sprai as a senior!!! He plays through injuries

  22. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Some might not know this but Orton used to be considered a pretty tough costumer … he played a bunch of games really injured in purdue if memory serves me right … Just saying. TRB

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Carnage always said Lloyd didn’t get any YAC.

  24. denver0723 says:

Is it Sunday yet? No? Damn. I shall keep waiting.

    Anxious.
    Nervous.
    Excited.

    GO BRONCOS!

  25. HardHitting27 says:

The worst part about this waiting for Sunday and it being like waiting for Christmas………… we can’t peek at our presents, because they aren’t under the tree….

    Let’s get to Sunday already!

    Go Broncos!!!

  26. badluck727 says:

LLoyd was and is a professional and you are all idiots to think that the team is better of without him.

  27. RH709 says:

If Tebow can help our team sustain longer, clock killing drives then our defense can stay fresh and maybe then they tackle better and get themselves off the field on third down.

  28. Orange27CRUSHER says:

    brian_schneider,

I think Merrel Hodge is a joke!!! He was a JOKE as a PLAYER and a “bit SLOW” as a “ANAL-ist”!!! He suffered way too many concusions as a player and at this point he just needs to get off the air all together!!!

    8)

  29. Orange27CRUSHER says:

    Bay,

Lloyd never had much of a YAC STAT, but he sure could catch about anything possible to catch. I think it sucks to keep shipping talent out of Denver, but sometimes you just need a FRESH START!

I remember Lloyd before the season talking down about tebow and praising Orton. He also said he feared the balls thrown his way and the angles from Tebow – he always like Orton (STILL DOES).

Like I said though Denver can ill afford to keep shipping their talent out and away for next to nothing (sixth round***)!!!

COME ON Denver Broncos learn the word “NO”!!! (when these guys demand trades).

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

It worked for Cinci!!! (Two first Rounder for a washed-up Palmer***)

  30. randy2191 says:

today seems to be a slow football day

  31. imready says:

Badluck, a number of the guys who post regular on here always pick out only portions of facts that support their case and post them here and start beating their drum. In Lloyds case, they never seemed to have noticed that most of his catches would have been uncatchable by most receivers. He was always laid out or up in the air making spectacular catches or dragng one in at the back of the endzone. He also always supported his team mates and the Broncos organization and had nothing bad to say about them even after he was no longer with the team. A classy guy and a great football player. There is a rotten bunch in here, lead by one or two that find a way to make a negative comment about anyone and everyone who has anything to do with the Broncos organization, even John Elway. Some are so arrogant or just plain befuddled that they actually think the organization decision making is influenced by their continuous rants. It took a while, which I’m ashamed to admit, to realize these people are not worth getting excited about. Their rhetoric is tiresome but occasionally entertaining with their constant contradiction and quotes from those paper selling son of a guns writing for the Enquirer of the west, the Denver Post. I love the Broncos and have for a very long time. I couldn’t be happier that John Elway and have great faith that he will get it done and make the Bronco feared once more. Go Broncos!

  32. 1ArabianKnight says:

Giving up Eron Riley ( a real speedster and true deep threat secret weapon) was very, very stupid!! IMHO!

    Dear Mr. Xanders,

I Know that YOU are personally behind destroying our team and giving away every quality player we’ve had all the way back to Shannahan leaving!!!!

I will be glad when Mr. Bowlen finally receive intelligence that YOU ARE THE Teams SABOTAGER!

I CALL IT……LIKE I SEE IT, AND GOT THE CA-HONEYS TO CALL YOU OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s Right, I said it! I’ve worked in Admin long enough to the the most dangerous person in the Kings(Bowlen)army isn’t the General (Elway), it’s his Vizier(Xanders).

You are like Jafar in Alladin, I can’t wait for you to get exposed!

And would Gladly Replace you as the General Manager.

Everyone know Pat doesn’t know FOOTBALL..as well as most. He’s just an Owner. But you have “wormed” your way into his Ear…and as a result you are the “True Puppeteer”, but soon you will be exposed!!!!!

    To Mr. Bowlen,
Give what you have now a chance to grow….

When, Oh when, will Colorado NOT be Famous for Giving Away every notable player in Every top Sport in My City:
Andre “The Big Cat” Gallaraga, Iverson, Van Exel, Carmello, Chauncey(my friend), Nene, Marshall, Lloyd, Scheffler, Cutler, etc..etc..

It’s a Business, I get it. As a businessman, are you familiar with Logistics? Because the crap you do..Doesn’t make logical sense” at all.

    Here’s the truth:

NOT EVERY SKILLED ATHLETE WILL HAVE OR POSSESS THE IDEAL PERSONALITY FOR “CLASS ACT” THAT WE ENVISION! SO WHAT DO you DO:

Learn to Incorporate Bellichecks Philosophy of learning how to deal with “exceptional personas” instead of just thinking they are cancers immediately!

Not doing so, only reflects the Poor LEADERSHIP of Non-Players(STAFF).

I Served 6 yrs in our Military, and in that short stint I was blessed to come to understand not every recruit turned out to be a stellar serviceman or woman, but the one thing we were Good At..Is “FINDING” away to Deal with What We had, utilizing it to our strengths..although most of the time it wasn’t pretty!

NO ONE ON THIS EARTH IS PERFECT!! But We can Learn to embrace and Harness indifference’s to reach a common unified goal.

  33. 1ArabianKnight says:

    P.S.

I hate the Pats, but I respect that aspect of Bellichecks Philosophy.

    I Pray..

That the Spirit of Mile-High Returns….and help our Team, do the Unthinkable:

PROVE EVERYBODY WRONG WHO DOUBTS IN THE GREATNESS OF MY CITY, And do so in stunning Miraculous Fashion that the term “Never Say Never”, takes on a whole new different meaning.

    TO: Tim Tebow,

The reason for your Highly overated and un-Fair criticism isn’t because of your Mechanics alone(which are above decent on your worst day), but it’s truly because you are an Outspoken Warrior for God!!! THATS THE TRUTH, and “they” (naysayers) just want to See ANY Champion for Him, Not Succeed, and will do anything to get you to crack and break!!

    Therefore,

I BLESS YOU and Our Team for that fact alone!! Like David vs. Goliath & Against All Odds-

    TIM,
I have but 3 words for You: STAND ……AND ….DELIVER!!!

For HE will not Forsake the meaning of why Destiny has brought You to Mile-High, or The Meaning of why you were drafted:

To GIVE our Team the ONE thing it has lacked Since ELWAY. Something that all the talent or skill can’t convey, and that’s the Undeniable Gift you POSSESS———-H E A R T!!! That’s What has been Missing since John.

Now go out there, and PLAY YOUR HEARTS OUT!

  34. 1ArabianKnight says:

(on my post just before last)
been in Admin long enough to know that*

  35. 1ArabianKnight says:

    Now Quickly Grab Terrel Owens,

So his last few years he can help groom our young receiving corps with that superior work ethic he has and his leadership.

(A little Attitude Might Help, after all, We won two Super Bowls with a receiver with a big mouth, attitude, and a lot of heart- Shannon Sharpe)

    it couldn’t hurt.. IMO.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Imnotready must of been talking about ArabianKnight, LMAO!

  37. gijames says:

    Bay,
that *post* is also in a different blog post , I thought I left it when I came to this blog post , arrrrrrrgh!

  38. 1ArabianKnight says:

    No Baylinocrush,

He wasn’t. If you paid attention he talked about guys who post regularly AND have something negative to say. I offered positive comments to Tebow, my Team, my city. I rarely post on here.

So what are you referring too? In what sense..pray tell?

  39. 1ArabianKnight says:

    That’s what I thought! Nothing..

  40. BroncosLAX says:

I’m Liking this ArabianKnight fella lol… He’s got … IT kind of like Tebow haha… I’m glad you have such a passionate opinion.

TRB True his first year in denver he played on 2 bum ankles and last year with somehing wrong with his arm or something lol I forgot since Tebow took over

  41. BroncosLAX says:

From where do you hail ArabianKnight? I love how you slid in the Aladdin refrence lol

  42. 1ArabianKnight says:

    gijames,

speak your mind and talk football. I appreciate rhetoric that is conclusive to people who know, played and coach like myself. Unlike some people who have nothing better to do than blog on here every single day, 30 times a day– eh, Bay?

  43. 1ArabianKnight says:

    Thanx LAX,

I just keep it real, and speak my mind. I grew up in Aurora, graduated HS there. I left Denver after the second Super Bowl, and haven’t been back since.

I hail from California at the moment, for the next 2 weeks. But Low and Behold…The Prodical Son returns home though on the 3rd!!

And things will be different because my feet will return to Mile High!

    Don’t hate me..Embrace me.

    Go Broncos!!

  44. BroncosLAX says:

Well I was curious from your name if it is just a name or if your actually arab

  45. BroncosLAX says:

And you should get used to the dissent its the nature of the Blog but there is nothing wrong with everyone having their own opinion and speaking your mind lord knows I have. Just put it out there if someone thinks your crazy for it then who cares you could think that same person is crazy for their opinion it makes the world go round

  46. 1ArabianKnight says:

    I agree LAX,

    I am actually Hebrew(Jewish).

I chose the name Arabian because if any one has been to 17th and Champa Downtown Denver,(i believe) there is a Bronze Statue of a Horse in The Hand of God, with an inscription.

The inscription educates the public on how the Horse first came to be. (It is a quote from the Quran):

Basically, God grabbed a hold of the South Wind and blew into His hand and created the 1st Horse. He named him Arabian, meaning, “For I have Made you to fly without wings”- God

That story has always touched me. Especially moving to Denver as a kid and watching the “Mile High Mystic” of The South Stands aid in Elway’s “miraculous comebacks” and it was too much of a coincidence at the time for me.

I can’t help but to think that is the name and same Horse Jesus will Ride on when He Returns to Earth. Just my opinion

But that’s why and where I got the name from.

  47. BroncosLAX says:

Have seen it and actually know the passage from he Quran. I was curious because I am Palistinian… haha who knew I’d agree with you but I do have a lot of respect for that

  48. baylinorcrush says:

ArabianKnight goes way back but he is here very seldom so I’m surprised he didn’t get that sarcastic post of mine because imready was obviously addressing me in his post and no one else. However that attitude of yours after that Arabian was totally uncalled for.

  49. 1ArabianKnight says:

    Thanx LAX,

and btw..I have love for Palestine! I’m for its statehood. I just don’t carry that type of hate like others do, as a Jew. It must be all that Love that Jesus taught..lol!

    Bay,
    apologies??
no hard feelings bro. I am on here alot, i just choose not to post. I keep up with you guys though. However, as you noticed I go way back, and anyone who follows know I always offer positivity and optimism. So i thought you were taking snipes at my positivity, and I have a problem when positivity is attacked. But I see you were sarcastic.
