Karl Visits Dove Valley

September 15th, 2010 - 3:34pm by Gray Caldwell

On Wednesday, the Broncos welcomed a Nugget to Dove Valley.

George Karl spent the day at team headquarters, sitting in on meetings, watching practice and getting to know Head Coach Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels reached out to the Denver Nuggets head coach, hoping to “pick his brain” about coaching at the professional level. After all, Karl’s first NBA coaching gig came when he was just about the same age as McDaniels.

“I’m a big fan of his and what he’s done in his career,” McDaniels said. “He’s had great success as a coach in the NBA and I’m a big NBA fan. Certainly (he’s) overcome a great deal of adversity personally with the things he’s had to deal with. It’s just a great privilege for our team to have him around us.”

Karl, who recently battled with neck and throat cancer, said he has spent time at other NFL facilities in Cleveland and Green Bay during previous coaching stints, but had never been to Dove Valley. He jumped at the opportunity.

“There’s a juice to starting the season that I’m getting into,” he said. “Sometimes just going to another place and learning and getting a feel and a sense for another sport that I played — but so long ago that I don’t remember — I think it’s just an energy.”

Karl and an assistant watched how the Broncos prepare for a game — which he compared to the way the Nuggets get ready for a playoff game since there’s a full week to install a plan.

McDaniels was happy to give the coaching veteran an inside look at the process.

“They’re just paying attention to some of the things that we do to try to get our team ready to go,” McDaniels said. “It’s kind of a full circle because I’m going to pick their brains and see if there’s anything that we can do better that they know.”

The experience got Karl thinking about which Nuggets would make good NFL players. His first thought? Nene as a 6-foot-11, 250-pound tight end.

“Quickness-wise, Ty Lawson is probably a guy I think could be a defensive back,” he added.

With the start of the NBA season a little more than a month away, Karl hopes to return the favor, inviting McDaniels out to watch him coach the Nuggets.

“Hopefully Josh and I will spend some time together and develop a relationship,” he said. “If we can be friends with one another, hopefully they have a great year then he can come see us play great basketball.”

  2. footballMANIAC says:

Hopefully McDaniels picked up a few pointers on how to be classy while coaching

  3. 1nOnlyTRB says:

hahaha, brady quinn (who isnt playing) practicing ball security. I woulda prefered pictures of ALL the RBs practicing ball security lol. Every single last one. They should do what marshall did that year, walk around dove valley 24/7 with a football tucked daring anyone to force a fumble. Seemed to work. the next season 0 fumbles lmao.

Also, WR squad needs to bring back the PJs!!!! lol. TRB out…

  4. Greatness007 says:

Brandon Stokley was cut today. Thanks for the memories.

  5. marshisboss says:

TRB i got one word for you letitgo lol. I liked him too but he is in the past

  6. baylinorcrush says:

TRB will never let go, Marshall is his siamese twin.

  7. marshisboss says:

I’m sorry but i don’t think we missed Marshall out there this week he may have had 8 catches but he had some drops too

  8. footballMANIAC says:

I’m sorry, but you can’t NOT miss Marshall. Any receiving corps with him is better for it. Period.

  9. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I really didnt talk about Marshall (like i usually would L-) lol), i was giving an example of what he did to stop his fumbling problems, that our RB need to address. not trying to rub anyone the wrong way of broncos past. Believe me, im over it. I dissagree with it. but im over it. nothing else i can do. my post said nothing about us needing him out there, even tho im sure he woulda caught that brandon lloyd td with both legs in bound lol but like i said, not trying to rub anyone the wrong way (cuz i know i can do that when marshall related) which is why i try to keep it at a minimum. Didnt see my post as not letting it go but for future reference i will look harder. TRB out.

    Too true Maniac… too true.

George Karl is a great coach and a first class individual. Watching him coach the Nuggets has made me a great fan of him. He could teach us all a lot about overcoming adversity. Coach McDaniels must feel honored by his presence. Go Nuggets! Go Broncos!

Hey Bronco fans!!! Just got home from work and the week is halfway done..That much closer to GAME TIME!!! I am so looking forward to it!!!! I just have to stay positive it is so hard with our early season schedual. but if we can play mistake free football and stay in these games get used to stiff competition we have a shot the second third of the season. there are alot of beatable teams the last ten games. Especialy within the division. I was not particularly impressed with the AFC west this past weekend. We definatly got a chance.
A big Geaorge Karl fan!! Lived in Seattle when he took the Sonics to the Championship.
Baylion always like your info you truly seem to know your football.
GO BRONCOS!!! CANT WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND!!!
    BAY AREA OUT!!!

  13. MarshMelo15 says:

Hello everyone!!!! I have been away for the past couple of months and have not been able to keep up on the blog due to some unforeseen circumstances, but now I am back. I think our Broncos played really well on sunday. If we could just step up our running game and also tighten up our pass defense a little bit, I think we will be just fine.

One thing that I wan’t to get off my chest (and yes I know it’s old news) but, the more time that goes by and I see how absolutely HORRIBLE Brady Quinn is and how well Peyton Hillis is doing in Cleveland, I get more and more angry everyday. Bottom line is Quinn isnt really helping out our team that much (other that the fact that is proves how badly we need Orton to staty healthy) and Hillis is becoming a great back for Cleveland.

  14. MarshMelo15 says:

Oh….And one HUGE shoutout to Mr. George Karl!!!!!!!! Props my man, Props!!!!!

  15. footballMANIAC says:

It seems like McDaniels gets the short end of every trade he makes…

  16. oldsouthstander says:

Harris, Kuper, Royal didn’t prtactice today. NOT GOOD!!!! The OL sure is tyaking a beating. Hope all can be back for game time.

  17. Yovi21 says:

uh really MANIAC? Jay cutler? 2 first round picks and Orton…I think that was a good trade!

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks Ben, much appreciated, I just have time on my hands to keep up with things and have been at it for a few moons is all.

  19. benbronco9 says:

    GOODNESS!!!
I am so pumped!! I get home from work and the first thing I do now is check the website. I realy dig the daily press confrences. If only it could translate onto the field. He has a scheme and it sure seems to me that if it can translate onto the football field we could realy be a force to be recond with.
That being said there were some monsters out there this weekend that are on our schedual early.
The early MNF game was scary. Those offenses are not even close to what ours is particularly of we can play mistake free football which will be dificult against both those teams.
But it can be done!!! There are some early season wins in this team if we can play the way he talks. He being MCD!!!
    Go BRONCOS!!!!

  20. footballMANIAC says:

Yeah, I guess that was the one exception, wasn’t it Yovi? But all the others…

  21. 1nOnlyTRB says:

pssh even that wasnt an exception cuz he pi$$ed away one of the picks on phonzy lol

  22. 1nOnlyTRB says:

so it was like never getting it lol

  23. footballMANIAC says:

Haha true, but look at how Cutler has performed. At least we got more TDs than INTs.

  24. sndvl says:

baylin, you were being sarcastic? I could not tell! lol kidding

I heard about Royal. Groin injury. UGh. Im frankly getting tired of all these injuries. You would think our entire team was on the cover of Madden. Geesh….

24-21 baylin. too lengthy an injury report.

    Get Healthy, Broncos 2K10

  25. sndvl says:

TRB, Im with you. As long as Marshall is catching balls, Hillis is running, Cutler throwing (INT’s or not), and McD is coaching…water under the bridge. Wonder what (or who) is next. McBean? Quinn? either version!

Hopefully a win will cure what ails us. Stomp Seattle

  26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

“Im frankly getting tired of all these injuries. You would think our entire team was on the cover of Madden. Geesh….”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You sir deserve an award for that one. maybe i appreciate that joke cuz im a madden fiend but that was hilarious. Madden curse. Drew Brees is going down lol

  27. baylinorcrush says:

It used to be the Sports Illustrated cover curse, Madden is just late to the dance.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Only three days left to place your scores!

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Funny, Legwold is saying the same thing today that I said yesterday about a fourth round pick, except I didn’t bother to mention Thomas:

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has been burned before, but he has decided to touch the stove once again.

In this week’s trade to acquire Laurence Maroney, McDaniels sent a fourth-round draft pick to his former team — the New England Patriots — for the oft-injured running back and a sixth-round pick.

Anyone curious about the potential value of a fourth-round pick? Think Elvis Dumervil, Brandon Marshall and Marcus Thomas over the last five Denver drafts alone. So this is no small deal if Maroney, a former first-round pick, isn’t more productive than he was with the Patriots.

I agree 100% with Legwold and disagree 100% with the ones here who say this was a good deal because all we gave up for it is a fourth round pick, how insane. How does anyone expect us to rebuild a team for good when we trade away picks for unhealthy players who have been busts with other teams. Belicheck must be laughing his head off, this is not the first time, we also gave him a fifth for Le Kevin Smith and his is gone already. The one time it worked with the Pats was giving up a seventh for Hochstein.

Bottom line, it is common knowledge in the NFL that the way to build a team is through the draft, not through free agency where you get a bunch of has beens from other teams or even worse, damaged goods. And the draft has been one of McD/ Xanders’ weaknesses, so for the ones who think we are going in the right direction, not so sure on this end, since other than taking a long shot on Tebow and counting on Thomas to get healthy so he can learn the playbook, we have basically squandered most of our chances at building a strong foundation for the future with our draft so far since McD took over. Let me re-phrase, I am sure draft wise we are NOT going in the right direction, something will need to happen to steer this ship pronto, because right now we are heading for a rocky shore, everyone needs to put their life jackets on just in case, LOL.

To make matters worse the Chiefs seem to have mastered the art of drafting this year, with at least three instant impact players in Berry, McCluster and Arenas, and the Raiders are improving in that department too, I don’t want to be left behind, whatever changes are needed in our front office for drafting purposes please fix it Mr. Bowlen. When you miss on drafts for consecutive years it sets you back for many years to come, and some folks still think everything is fine and dandy, hope they know what they are talking about and that I am a complete fool. Serious, I would rather be considered a fool and have McD/Xanders turn this thing completely around than being correct in forecasting possible stormy weather ahead in McD’s/Xanders’ paradise.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, with all that said Denver 24 Seattle 14. And good news for Sharpe, the bimbo who tried to slander him through court withdrew her complaint. I hear she is a real loser that one, read the article in the DP, she needs to be charged for stalking instead.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

34 year old McD talking about 25 year old Maroney:

“I’m familiar, certainly, with the player. I know the kid. He’s a good kid,” McDaniels said today. “He can be productive in our offense.”

I know it’s just a figure of speech any coach might use, but it still sounds odd when a guy only 9 years older than you calls you a kid.

  32. Big D 44 says:

Yeah Bay, I heard McD say that in a press conference and was shocked a little. McD is too young to call a 25 year old a kid.

  33. Yovi21 says:

only time will tell, if he can help our short yardage game, I’d be satisfied! haha I’m gunna say 27-17 us of course!

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

Had the same thoughts when I heard McD refer to Maroney…lol!

  35. Big D 44 says:

I’m calling 24-10 Broncos win. I think the Defense will come up big this week after a less than ideal game against the Jags.

  36. royalbroncofan1 says:

Yes, that’s great news re: Sharpe ! I thought – here we go with a copycat trying to capitalize on the situation with Ines Sainz and Jets organization.

  37. royalbroncofan1 says:

bay – I’ll go with 31-17 Broncos win.

  38. Big D 44 says:

I am getting a little frustrated with the total lack of respect the Broncos are getting from the media, and at the same time I understand the reasons why this is happening. No one is giving Denver a chance to do anything this year. A blog was posted last year calling the Broncos the 9th most popular franchise in ALL sports. Yet finding anything related to the Broncos on ESPN or NFL network is hard to do. I hope the guys are using this as some motivation because the Broncos are getting zero respect. I guess I’m spoiled because I’m used to the Broncos being a top notch franchise that is always in the conversation for the playoffs and the super bowl. I know it hasn’t been that way for the past 4 seasons, but I for one am getting sick and tired of mediocrity.

Come on fellas. Let’s start making a mark. Take care of the Seahawks and start showing people that you are capable of beating the so called real contendors.

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS…..

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

I hear you Big D 44: It almost feels like some of those guys are actually hoping we do have a bad season, just by the way they talk about the Broncos.

  40. strandoftds says:

Awesome news for Sharpe. Glad thats over. stupid witch.

  41. Yovi21 says:

haha Big D, have you been a Broncos fan long…I don’t think the media will ever show us respect! I honestly cant remember the last the the media gave any praise to Denver! (except for the media in Denver haha) Maybe someday Big D, maybe someday lol!

  42. Big D 44 says:

I’m 32 and I’ve been a fan since I could take a poop on my own. lol Which was when I was 30. lol jk.

In all seriousness, I have lived in California most of my life but my Dad was raised in Colorado. And I was raised as a Bronco fan. Elway is one of my biggest idols and I’m sure most people who post here feel the same.

I guess I just haven’t always paid attention to the media. Over the past 2 years I have gotten more and more involved with blogging and using the internet to search for information. I guess part of the reason is that I knew what to expect with Shanny. Since we hired McD I have really tried to follow what is happening so I could determine what our new coach and new team are all about. So maybe that is why I have not noticed that our team has never gotten their due respect.

  43. Orange_Crusher says:

Maybe if the Broncos WIN a game…. And look like they know what they are doing…. The heads on TV will give us some respect….

i.e. Respect is not given in the NFL… It is WON….

Not trying to dissagree BigD44 but we aren’t getting respect in the media because they haven’t looked very good out there on the filed.

We ended the season last year with 2 INT’s and a loss and then we begin this season with another INT for a loss….

If the Broncos come out this week, win the game and play well, someone like Adam Schefter or Michael Lombardi will give us a good media review…

  44. vabroncoguy says:

I agree…why would the media “respect” this team. You get respect when you actually do something that. A team that is 2-9 in it’s last 11, has no “star” players anymore (Besides Champ and he is super quiet) and has an abrasive coach. The pundits actually picked Denver to win last week by most accounts, and look at how we “respected” that. We have no young stars, our qb isn’t flashy, and our sack guy is gone. you are not going to get respect in this “team first” approach until you start winning.

  45. Big D 44 says:

I agree OC. Thats why I said I understand why it is like that. If I was a player on the Broncos I would be motivated and angry. I am hoping that is the effect it has on our players but I haven’t seen anything yet to show me that.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

That’s why I hardly ever pay notice to the national media, I get my news from the Denver local media when it comes to the Broncos. Getting respect from the national media is not what it’s made out to be to me, I go watch my Broncos with one of my Bronco jerseys, cap and assorted pins on here in Austin area sports bars for every single game, wear Bronco T-shirts a lot everywhere, cruise on my “Orange Crush” orange colored boat with one of my orange Bronco shirt, an orange swimming trunk and an orange crush cap on, not to mention orange frame sunglasses, and I do all these things proudly because I know what we have accomplished over the years, and that alone makes me feel good, so I don’t really care whether Joe Blow from N-Y or LA respects my team. And believe it or not but right here in the middle of Texas on my boat or otherwise, I have never gotten hassled over my team choice, other than friendly crap, they actually respect my devotion to my team and that’s more than enough for me, screw the national media, the best way I do that is by tuning them out.

But what I worry about much more now is where we are heading, that my friend is a lot more troublesome than what the media think. It’s like we are in the process of losing our identity and I’m not sureI like the one we are replacing it with, starting with the kind of chaotic and classless way that McD has of coaching, it doesn’t earn my respect, and I’m afraid it doesn’t earn the players’ respect either, and in this case respect is everything, it is the foundation to an organization, without respect for the leader, players end up playing the season for the payroll, we are not there yet, but if McD is set on making his players feel stupid publicly no doubt eventually we’ll get there. The answer lies with McD, and if he doesn’t get it, it will soon lie with Bowlen. I’m still hoping for a sudden maturing, but it wasn’t a good start of that Sunday.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

It’s funny how the coach wants every player to buy into the team concept, and he turns around and demolishes some players’ morale by treating them like dogs in front of national TV. I am no rocket scientist, but I would think there is a serious clashing of philosophies there. What do I know…

  48. baylinorcrush says:

Unfortunately guys, I don’t buy the we play well and win we’ll earn the respect of the national media, because even at our pinnacle we got very little of that, let’s face it, we are a small market, we are not worhty of competing with the media’s favorite big market darlings, we would mean very little in the way of a boost for their ratings, now they talk up the Giants and the Jets and they got multi millions of fans eating up everything they say. That is just how it is.

  49. baylinorcrush says:

Oh nooo, it’s about money again, LOL.

  50. Big D 44 says:

I agree Baylin, and I always wear my Broncos gear with pride. And drive around with my Broncos sticker on my truck. This frachise has treated me well in my relatively young life. Its just hard for me to handle the Broncos being mediocre. I guess we all got spoiled in the 80″s and 90′s.
