Mario Haggan may have bounced around the Broncos defensive formation in 2010, but his impact remained constant.
After a career season, the eighth-year linebacker has earned a spot on USA Today’s 19th-annual All-Joe team, a group of 53 players who have never earned a Pro Bowl selection but deserve recognition for their unsung contributions.
As USA Today’s Nate Davis described the group, it’s a list of “players thriving on the mainland in the NFL’s version of anonymity.”
Haggan started every game for the second straight season, finishing second on the team with a career-high 87 tackles. He also notched a career-high 5 sacks, including three in the Broncos’ win against Kansas City on Nov. 14.
Davis summed up Haggan’s selection with a nod to his versatility: “Did whatever Denver needed, starting eight games on the outside and eight on the inside as the team switched schemes and coped with injuries.”
That’s a role Haggan relished — and thrived in — this season.
The third-year Bronco was one of six NFL players with at least 80 tackles and five sacks.
“The old saying is ‘Jack of all trades, good at none,’” Haggan said this season. “I don’t think of myself as that guy, so it’s tough to settle in at one position because I feel like I’m capable of being an impact player at both.”
This marks the third straight year a Broncos linebacker has appeared on the list following D.J. Williams in 2009 and Jamie Winborn in 2008.

It has no merit. But the “tripod” would have to consider it if offered straight up. Doom and a 2nd I think is way too much.
If there is no cba it’s a moot point anyway…
The tripod, LMAO.
The Triumvirat is my view of it, old Roman style way of conducting business.
Triumvirate
In ancient Rome, usually a board of three officials who assisted higher magistrates in judicial functions, oversaw festival banquets, or ran the mint. The First Triumvirate (60 BC) of Pompey, Julius Caesar, and Crassus was an informal group of three strong leaders with no sanctioned powers. The Second Triumvirate (43 BC), consisting of Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian (later Augustus)—formally tresviri rei publicae constituendae (“triumvirate for organizing the state”)—held absolute dictatorial power.
Better than the outgoing Napoleon way, LOL.
BFE: I was reading an article on the Packers and read that
LT Chad Clifton and C Scott Wells are former Tennessee Volunteers.
Some call it the three legged stool, like Cooper I think, something to sit on I guess, LOL.
The triumvirate! Nicely played sir…
Yeah rbf1,there are a lot of Tennessee Vols in the NFL right now. They’ve been lucky to put so many players in the NFL the past few years.
Arian Foster,Monterio Hardesty,Eric Berry,Robert Ayers,Jerod Mayo,the Colquitt bros,Big John Henderson,Big Dan Williams,Jabari Greer,Robert Meechum,Jason Witten,Peyton Manning,Dante Stallworth,etc,etc…..just to name a few off the top of my head.There are many more I’ve forgot to mention.
Nice to watch the players you followed in college make it in the NFL!
The Tennessee Vols have the leading passer, leading rusher, leading receiving TE, & leading tackler in the NFL this season.
QB: Manning (4,436 passing yards)
RB: Foster (1,436 rushing yards)
TE: Witten (956 receiving yards)
LB: Mayo (169 tackles)
Hopefully Ayers can get with the program!
Yeah wished he was Al Wilson or Jerod Mayo!
When Ayers moves back to DE (his college position) he will be a better fit!
Nicely put Mr.Bay, i like the history.
This CBA this is a pain…im still lost.
does arrogance play in this debacle?
i also hope Ayers lives up to his brotherhood..
GUYS CHECK THIS OUT!!!
Nnamdi Asomugha’s life has not been the same since Jan. 9.
On what was supposed to be a quiet Sunday for Asomugha was anything but. On that day, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Asomugha’s contract with the Oakland Raiders had unexpectedly been voided. He would be an unrestricted free agent and Oakland would not be given the chance to give him the franchise tag.
“It’s been crazy ever since,” Asomugha said.
I had the opportunity to catch up with the Raiders’ star cornerback Wednesday afternoon for a piece that will run later. Asomugha is respectfully keeping his thoughts on free agency mostly to himself these days. Understandably, he doesn’t want to talk too much about it.
He, however, is alone. Everybody he runs into asks him about it.
“There hasn’t been as a single day since the ESPN story came out that I haven’t been asked about it, and I’m not talking about reporters,” Asomugha said. “I’m talking about the person at the grocery store or the person at the airport. If they recognize me, they are asking me about it. It happens every day … I think people see it as an opening. It doesn’t bother me. I just smile and keep walking and enjoy my day.”
Asomugha said it’s not just Oakland fans who bring up his pending free agency. Its fans of every team, asking him to join their favorite team.
“It everybody, everyday,” Asomugha said.
Asomugha shouldn’t expect the free-agency frenzy to slow down any time soon. He’s in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, so he’ll run into plenty of football fans there. I asked Asomugha if other Pro Bowl players have been asking about what he may be planning to do. He respectively declined to answer the question.
I bet I know the answer to that one. Everyone wants to know what Asomugha is going to do. But we’re just going to have to wait and see.
The way u said check this out i was hoping the article would hint he wants to play alongside another all pro CB like Champ perhaps. Anyway, interesting story I suppose…I see him remaining a raider and if not a Raider, he Might just become an Atlanta Falcon (They could really use the secondary help) or when all else fails be a patriot and try to win the superbowl.
BTW, Todays the last day to vote for the never say never moment of the Year. So if you think Tebow is deserving…put in your votes and if you already have, put in more. Results tonight (Thursday) 9pm EST. TRB out…
Legwold says:
the Broncos are expected to be on the hunt for plenty of defensive talent, but Fox will also be looking to shore up the running game. And Williams, a player Fox used plenty in his time as Panthers coach, will easily get some consideration.
Williams will be an unrestricted free agent. A new collective bargaining agreement will have to be hammered out between the players union and the NFL before that happens, however.
But Williams is a physical back with some breakaway potential. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2008 and ’09 before playing in just six games last season because of a foot injury.
Fox prefers bigger backs than the Broncos have on their current roster.
With Fox I got it all, emphasis on the D like I wanted for years and he even wants bigger backs like I have asked for two years now. Life is definitely looking up in my Bronco football world.
And about Harris:
Harris will be an unrestricted free agent as well and does not appear to be coming back.
Broncos general manager Brian Xanders has commented several times in recent weeks that the Broncos would have a hole to fill in the offensive line when talking about the right tackle spot.
So, it appears, at least at this point, Harris will be moving on and the Broncos will be looking to add a starter up front.
Look for the Redskins or the Texans to take a long look at him as well.
Kind of surprised here just a little bit that Legwold seems so convinced Harris is history for us, always thought he and Clady where a great tackle tandem but obviously there must be some more underlying issues with Harris than his injury in 2009 and McD benching him last year here and there. Effort? Practice? Attitude?
Either way there is another way of getting ourselves another draft pick, but, once again a new collective bargaining agreement will have to be hammered out between the players union and the NFL before that can happen.
Here is a funny anecdote by Woody after the Packers-Bears game where Cutler suffered a “severe” partial tear of his MCL:
Cutler hasn’t helped his case by what he has done in Denver and Chicago previously, and had no problems on Sunday night after the game walking up the stairs to the second floor of a steak restaurant with his girlfriend in Chicago. And why was he crossing the field to seek out Aaron Rodgers when he should have gone back to the locker room? I don’t think he’ll be trusted in Chicago in the future, because people will always wonder what will happen if there is a next time.
LMAO@Cutler walking up some stairs, not to mention riding a stationary bike…..
And Woody is thinking the same way I do about Moreno we just talked about last evening:
Moreno: John Fox seems to like him, and Eric Studesville is back as running back coach, and he’s a Moreno fan. So I’m certain they’ll try to make something out of him next year.
If the Redskins and Texans are going to take a long look at Harris,it must not be an injury thing,so why would you get rid of one of the best young RTs in the NFL,he is only 25,something fishy here, big mistake getting rid of Harris, just another hole in the Oline that we would have to use a draft pick on,man I’d like to keep the talented players!
Clady,Harris, and Kuper are the guys we need for our zone scheme!
I just wished they would leave the Offense alone and worry about the Defense!
Here is a Woody statement that could potentially give a heart attack to OC, funny we talked about that last night also:
If the collective bargaining agreement is not settled until August or September, that’s the only way Orton will be back at quarterback. Even then, I doubt it.
But he could be saved if the Broncos feel as if there are too many changes to be made in too short a time and Tebow doesn’t get time in exhibition games to speed up his development.
I think we need a TE and a FB,but that’s it as far as the Offense goes.
BFE, remember that’s not the Broncos talking, just Legwold, but the way he goes about Harris he must know something we don’t.
Sure hope there wrong, because we’d have to use a high draft pick to get a good RT,they don’t come cheap.
Oh well,it is what it is.
Well the thing I’ve heard about Harris is that he’s soft. He’s a great athlete but most football people think he’s not physical enough to be effective in the running game. And if you watch him closely, he’s definitely more of a finesse guy so there could be some truth to that. Add to that the fact that he’s prone to injury and I’m not that surprised Legwold thinks he will be moving on.
In fact, Legwold is not the only one mentioning losing Harris, remember this is what I posted here last night from a MHR review of the senior bowl practice:
On the other side of the ball, former Baylor guard and former teammate of Broncos center J.D. Walton Danny Watkins has had two very good days for the South team. Scout’s Inc. calls him a “technician” on the inside, and has shown great abilities. If the Broncos lose Ryan Harris, they could put Zane Beadles at right tackle and team up the old Bears teammates on the interior.
And remember, like everyone knows it’s not too hard to plug running backs into a zone blocking scheme. But I think the same thing goes for offensive linemen. Tom Nalen was a 7th round pick after all. I’m sure we could find a suitable replacement somewhere in the middle of the draft.
Yeah Bay I read the same article.
88,a finesse guy for the zone scheme is desirable anyway
plus didn’t he have a good year in ’08 under Shanny’s zone scheme?.
Seemed to me he was doing a lot better the last part of the season.
I know I hear you. That’s just what I’ve heard about him.
And yes he had a great year in 2008, but mostly from a pass protection scheme. If I remember correctly that was the Broncos worst year running the ball under Shanny. A lot of that had to do with injuries to running backs, but we didn’t have the success we used to have plugging anyone in back there like we did in the past until Hillis became the starter late in the year.
So maybe run blocking is his weakness. I don’t know if it’s a fact, I’m just saying I could see that being the reason, especially since Fox wants to run the ball a lot this year.
IDK,I just assumed Clady,Harris, and Kuper would be great in the zone.
I meant from a pass protection standpoint.
Yeah, but we would have to get a great RT to take his place, remember that’s Tebow’s blindside.
Good point, could Beadles handle it?
I just hate the fact of there might not be a FA this year, and we only have 6 picks in the draft,I would hate to have to use 2 of them on a RT and TE.
Yeah I agree with you. I’d like him to stay too. It’s just that from things I’ve heard and from watching him play I think the rumor of him leaving might have something to do with his run blocking.
Don’t know for sure though. Let’s hope he re-signs.
By example Beadles started at RT against the Jets last year, one of our best game.
Beadles has played a lot at RT,so he might be the answer, but who will play RG?
I think Kuper’s at right guard. LG would be what we would have to replace.
Maybe that guy from Baylor that Bay mentioned?
Danny Watkins, see my above post you said you read.
I meant LG.
Bay do you know what round Watkins is projected to go?
He is a fifth round pick projection and we have one of those.
Man we need some key FA pick ups,I hope we get the chance to.
Not trying to use FA to build a team, but a few pick ups sure would save us some draft picks.
I guess I could live with a 5th round pick,I’d just like to know for SURE,why they want to release him.
Bay, I thought we didn`t have a 4th and a 5th draft pick this year?
But of course, a new collective bargaining agreement will have to be hammered out between the players union and the NFL before FA can happen.
Get used to it I will always remind us of that, haha.
Hell I just automatically assumed Clady,Harris, and Kuper were the last players we had to worry about, but oh well.
You’re right, no 5th, he would have to fall to the 6th.
