Inside the Numbers: Week 8

October 29th, 2012 - 10:50am by Stuart Zaas

2
Quarterback Peyton Manning, who completed 22-of-30 passes (73.3%) for 305 yards with three touchdowns (138.9 rtg.) in Denver’s 34-14 win over the New Orleans Saints, became just the second player in NFL history (Steve Young, 1998) to record at least 300 yards passing and three touchdowns in four consecutive games.

3
Linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who finished with a game-high 13 tackles, became just the third player in the NFL this season (LB Ray Lewis, Bal/LB Jerrell Freeman, Ind.) to post at least 13 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

There are only three players in the NFL with multiple interceptions and multiple sacks, two of which are Broncos. Wesley Woodyard (3 sacks, 2 INT) and Chris Harris (1.5 sacks, 2 INT) join Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson (3 sacks, 2 INT) as the only players to accomplish that feat this season.

5
Manning also set a club record with his fifth consecutive 300-yard passing game, equaling his personal-best streak that he set during the 2009 season.

7
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas finished the game with seven catches for 137 yards and one touchdown to mark the seventh career 100-yard outing.

9
Kicker Matt Prater registered the ninth “perfect” game in Broncos history, the eighth of his career in which he converted 100 percent of his field goals and extra points and registered touchbacks on every kickoff.

10
With Sunday’s win, Manning improved to 10-4 in his career coming off a bye week.

33
With 23 carries for 122 yards (5.3 avg.) and one touchdown, running back Willis McGahee became the NFL’s active leader in 100-yard rushing games in addition to tying Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew (63) for the second-most rushing touchdowns among active NFL players.

55
Since halftime of Denver’s Week 6 win at San Diego, the Broncos are outscoring opponents 69-14, including a 69-7 stretch that ended when the Saints scored a late touchdown on Sunday night.

200
The game marked the 200th win Head Coach John Fox has been a part of since he entered the NFL as an assistant coach in 1989. It also marked the 200th start of cornerback Champ Bailey’s career.

252
The Broncos defense held the Saints offense to just 252 total yards of offense, which represents New Orleans’ lowest total since its season opener in 2010 — 39 games ago.

265
Denver gained exactly 265 yards of offense in each half in addition to scoring 17 points in each frame.

76,832
The announced crowd of 76,832 that watched the Broncos beat the Saints by a score of 34-14 marks the fourth-largest home attendance figure in team history.

Here’s a number that DIDN’t happen and I really wonder why.
With 1:55 left in the game the Broncos had 4th and 8 to go on the NO 46 yard line. They let the clock run down and took the 5 yard penalty to waste time.
My Question is wouldn’t this have been the PERFECT time to let our fantastic Kicker Matt Prater go for a history making 64, 65, or 66 yard field goal? He’s capable of it and there was no risk to the win with Denver up 34-7. The worst that could happen was NO gets the ball on their own 46 and eventually scores a touchdown which they did anyway after the punt. Or maybe they get a run back and have to kick an onsides kick off.
The upside is adding to already high team morale and possibly letting Prater get in the record books.
    What are your thoughts?

I wasn’t trying to hate on you Bay, I hope those who are in the path heed your warnings. I wish everyone well who may feel the effects of Sandy.

Wesley Woodyard balled out last night. I don’t think it is even human to play that well. Maybe D.J. slipped him some of that no-human stuff he was taking (although it never did D.J. that much good). I think this seals the deal on WLB. No chance D.J. gets his job back, as if it was even a question before.

Trevathan may be an absolute steal in the 6th round of the draft. Still too early to make the call but things are looking good. Someone on here and I talked about developing Danny specifically to cover some of the NFL’s TEs and in this game he did exactly that. He did whiff on Sproles once but even Champ Bailey would be hard pressed to make a tackle on Spoles in the open field.

The most underrated thing I see with this team is chemistry and comradery from this team. They congradulate one another and they pick eachother up after a bad play. They care about one another on a level I haven’t seen from this team in a decade. Go get em boys! The A.F.C. awaits.

Watch out Bengals, this horse is going to trample you!

Really beautiful game ,even had Hillman doing well so I’m not so upset we didn’t draft Doug Martin. I know this is ultimate nit pick BUT faircatch the punt to prevent start at the two and on punts aim toward the corner so no touchback . Seriously kudos to all the coaches players and darn it Thank you John Elway ! (will someone offer HC job to Del Rio? At this rate 99% they will)Go Broncos!!

  4. RH709 says:

I pray that if JDR is offered the H.C. somewhere he turns it down. I know HC is sweet and all but JDR could help Denver get a ring or two and sometimes that may be more important. :)

  5. RH709 says:

@CC, I would have been all for it. Purposely back the holder up some just to make it longer :)

  6. RH709 says:

Mays is out with a broken leg. Although, I have been saying Mays shouldn’t be a starter at MLB, I still really like the guy. Get well soon Mays. Sorry dude.

Even though mays is out which kinda sucks, we have DJ coming back. I know everybody is like ” I think he has officially lost his job ” Well yea maby… but fact is the guy WAS a captain, he WAS a leader for our defense, and he WILL help that unit with his ability and experience. This is a guy who I think comes back with something to prove and will have a attitude about his play that will rub off on the other defensive guys. I have personally always liked DJ. So maby I’m biased but the dude is still young and he is a stud in my opinion. He led our team in tackles plenty of years. When you get a guy back that even statistically has led your team, to me it is an advantage having him back.

  8. BRONCOSONMINE says:

GOOD JOB BRONCOS..BUT WHAT ABOUT DAT DEFENSE

  9. Broncos20 says:

GOTTA LOVE THAT TOP PICTURE OF WOODYARD SLAMMIN GRAHAM!!!! WOODYARD WAS A BEAST!!!!

  10. BroncofaninIL says:

You’re right x Papa Mojo x…he WAS our captain. If it works for the team I’m good with it, but I’d hate to mess with the chemistry. If anything he has to earn his way into the starting line up which IMO will be no easy feat at this point.
