Inside the Numbers: Week 16

December 24th, 2012 - 1:28pm by Stuart Zaas

9
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas tied a career high with nine catches and topped the 100-yard mark for the sixth game of the season on Sunday.

10
The Broncos won their 10th straight game to match the second-longest win streak in franchise history with their 34-12 win against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

17.5
Linebacker Von Miller finished Sunday’s win with 1.5 sacks to increase his season total to a Broncos-record 17.5.

18.8%
During the Broncos’ last nine games, opponents have converted just 21-of-112 third-down attempts (18.8 pct.). That figure is best in the NFL with the next closest team, the New York Jets, nearly 10 percentage points behind (31-of-113, 27.4 pct.).

19
Wide receiver Eric Decker caught a pair of touchdowns against Cleveland to give him 11 on the season and 19 over the past two years. That total ties the Broncos’ record for receiving scores in a two-year span. Decker’s 11 touchdowns are tied for third-most in the league this year.

36
Tight end Jacob Tamme’s 36-yard catch in the second quarter and 33-yard catch in the third represent the two longest plays of his career.

39
Tight end Joel Dreessen established a new single-season career high with his 37th catch of the season in Sunday’s win.

72
Quarterback Peyton Manning threw for three scores against the Browns to tie Brett Favre for the most games with at least three touchdown passes in NFL history.

99
Sunday’s win vs. Cleveland marked the 99th overall career win as a head coach for John Fox.

127
Running back Knowshon Moreno finished with 127 yards from scrimmage (78 rushing / 49 receiving), topping the 100-scrimmage-yard mark for the fourth time in his five starts this season.

144
The Broncos have outscored opponents by 144 points in the second half this year to represent the second-highest figure since the 1970 NFL merger, and the best since Green Bay (+170) in 1996. Denver owns a 282-138 advantage in the second half this season.

    Repost from last blog.

We are the most complete team and the hottest team in the NFL right now.

What is going on with NE? They barely pulled out a win yesterday vs a team that nearly everyone expected a dominant win for them. If Henne can put up the nearly 350 yards I have no doubt Manning can this time AND we dont have the same offensive fumble issues we did last time. And our D playing stout. They really dont scare me if we end up playing them again.

Team that scares me is Seattle but we dont have to worry unless we and they end up in the big one. They have two big corners (Both 6-3 I believe) that can hang with out WRs and good at getting pressure.

Also I dont think Wilson is OROY imo. He has been great no doubt. But what Luck and RG3 have done is better. Luck does something that we all know. He just finds a way to win. He can make some bad passes but he has a short memory and comes back hard. Not to mention a 2-14 team last year and to the playoffs. The Colts are a team that besides Wayne is full of rookie offensive weapons. Fleener Allen Hilton Ballard and of course Luck.

  2. strandoftds82 says:

Those are some scary stats to the rest of the NFL. All I can say is WOW!!

  3. strandoftds82 says:

If we make it to the SB in Febuary, which team would you want our Denver Broncos to face the most?

  4. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I would love to see Atl (for the double rematch) or GB (Obvious reason as well as it would be funny to see Manning do the helicopter flip)

  5. strandoftds82 says:

    FLY, BE FREE!! LOL

  6. strandoftds82 says:

Well shoot! As of today, both Atlanta And G.B. are numbers 1 and 2 seeds if the season finished today. How ironic it is that both of the Broncos SB wins were against those two teams. Rather crazy I think! LMAO!

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Lol Strand.

I really hope Colts can beat the Texans and not just because we get the #1 seed. But because IMO the best two teams in the AFC are NE and Denver and they should be the two teams in the AFC Championship game.

  8. strandoftds82 says:

I do believe we can whip the Pats butts in. They are struggling!

  9. strandoftds82 says:

I just looked up three NFL power rankings and the Broncos are #1 in them. Not to shabby!

  10. DaddyBronc says:

I agree that it looks like the Broncos are on pace to lock down the number 1 seed.

The KC game is another potential trap game – batten down the hatches, Manning!!! KC will not look like team #32!

Two teams scare me – the Patriots and the Seahawks…what other teams do to the Pats makes no difference. Bellychick has Fox’s number! Fox doesn’t seem to be able to change it up enough. It always looks to me that NE is reading the Broncos perfectly.

Seahawks are steam rolling and they have bought into the Wilson / Carrol package. They look unstoppable.

That brings me to the ROY. RGIII beats out Luck for the same reason that that he beat him in college for the Heisman. I appreciate that both of these guys are high character guys…in a culture that is falling apart – RGIII, Luck, and Wilson are reasons for optimism!!!

But in the end – Seahawks were a great defense that had given up and lost games that should have been won easily. Wilson was able to inspire and win the confidence of a bad offense. Bad in the sense that they were not playing as a team – they do have some good talent that was struggling with having a cheerleader for a coach. Then Russel Wilson happened. Nope…to me RW has had greater success and is more the reason for the success than the other two. My hope is that Peyton Manning and the Broncos can unnerve the Rookie because he stands in the way of the Lombardi and rings.

  11. DaddyBronc says:

Strand – every one but the Broncos kept losing. They didn’t want to allow the Broncos to be #1 but… LOL

It always amazes me how much the Broncos get ignored but the NFL talking heads….

  12. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yea Strand most power rankings I have seen finally have Denver #1

  13. strandoftds82 says:

    Agreed! LOL

  14. strandoftds82 says:

AB, its about time huh?! HaHa!!

  15. alaskanbronco06 says:

I gotta say I find it funny when everyone talks about our losses to ATL NE and HOU. Most people didnt expect a Denver win in those games because of the lack on time together. I cant remember who it was on NFLN but someone said yesterday on gameday morning that if Denver played them around this time of year the outcome would probably be different.

  16. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yup Strand. IMO they shouldve been last week.

  17. strandoftds82 says:

I’m glad that the Broncos had no serious injuries to report after the game. I pray that that remains the same come Sunday against the Chiefs. Lets stay healthy!

  18. DaddyBronc says:

We’d at least be Houston now…I think!???

  19. DaddyBronc says:

    Beat!

  20. strandoftds82 says:

Well, what it all boils down to is winning the SB! One week at a time as they say. LOL

  21. alaskanbronco06 says:

DB I think we would beat ATL and HOU. But I cant say NE without being biased.

  22. strandoftds82 says:

Grand-DaddyBronc, I think the Broncos will have a few new wrinkles on OFFENSE in the playoffs. There’s some cards that haven’t been shown as of yet. HeHeHeHe!!!!

  23. alaskanbronco06 says:

Part of me thinks that we have been holding back a bit offensively so we dont show what we can fully do so we can unleash some surprises in the playoffs.

  24. DaddyBronc says:

    I hope so!!!

  25. strandoftds82 says:

And then there’s that Fast-Fade-to-the-Corner to DT that Champs says is impossible to DEFEND. I’ve seen that play once about 6 weeks ago. I don’t know what that play is called but The Offense is near the 10 to 15 yard line and is an easy and dead on TD to WR D. Thomas.

  26. DaddyBronc says:

ATL sure looked beatable two weeks ago – but they are a great team. We’d have to get to Matty Rice ‘alot’ to beat them!!!

  27. strandoftds82 says:

I totally agree Alaska! I’ve thought that for the last month.

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

DB they are a good team. But are very beatable. Like you said get to Matty Ice make him uncomfortable. Something we had a hard time doing week 2.

Strand I have thought that for a while. I have seen us do something one week successfully and havnt used it since. Like its being set aside.

  29. DaddyBronc says:

They are going to need more than one or two gadgets. The most encouraging thing I have seen from the Broncos was that game that Moreno had all those carries. I thought that it was huge for the coaches to allow a run attack with Manning as QB.

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

DB I love that they did that. EVeryone thought our run game was dead when McGahee went down but IMHO it is actually better.

  31. strandoftds82 says:

I’ve also found the the Broncos just play it close until half time and then pour it on the 2nd half.

  32. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I have too. Its like they make a gameplan only for the 1st half to test them then make a whole new gameplan at half after what they see. Instead of just making adjustments lol

  33. strandoftds82 says:

Alaska, its working every week. Keep it going that way.

  34. broncoduckfan says:

This is a great coaching staff because they are so humble. I believe that was the main downfall of the previous coaching regime, arrogance and an intense desire to show off. Now we have a group that is willing to forego personal accolades for team success. A truly winning formula!

  35. broncoduckfan says:

Nice to see Moreno with a new attitude to go along with his fresh legs. Couldn’t have come at a better time.

  36. broncoduckfan says:

Any predictions about KC? I am thinking PM will be on the bench by late 3rd quarter in a blowout!

  37. strandoftds82 says:

Your probably right Duckfan. My only concern is Charles, contain him and GAME OVER!!

  38. DaddyBronc says:

Duck – I think that is wishful thinking…It’s my wish as well of course…but KC is never an easy win for the Broncos.

I have no idea what it is…but I expect 60 minutes of war.

  39. broncoduckfan says:

Daddy, I suppose its the holiday egg nog talking but I am thinking the Chiefs are done for the year. Wolfe needs to have a big game to contain Charles IMO.

  40. broncoduckfan says:

I am actually worried that they will turn to Stanzi though, in which case, I will agree with Daddy, 60 minutes of war.

  41. strandoftds82 says:

Denver fans will be loud as hell too!

  42. strandoftds82 says:

Could be. That’ll be different. LOL

  43. alaskanbronco06 says:

As we saw last time KC may have a run game but they have no passing game. Were at home every aspect is rolling. I dont see this war happening that you think will DB.

  44. DaddyBronc says:

Of course…and then again…I thought the ‘dogs’ were going to put up more fight than they did…

  45. DaddyBronc says:

Truth is …KC is a demoralized and bad ‘team’. But there are some talented individuals with pride there too. I’m not saying they really have a chance …but they can force and maximize errors!!!

  46. DaddyBronc says:

I hope they are able to put Rottweiler in…and they run the score up over 40 pts…

  47. broncoduckfan says:

Rottweiler? Sorry I am out of the loop. Who is that?

  48. DaddyBronc says:

Haha – our rookie backup QB!

  49. DaddyBronc says:

Haha – our rookie backup QB!!!!

  50. killerkod says:

Only thing we’ll be doing for the Chiefs is garaunteeing them the number one overall pick in the draft!

    GO BRONCOS!
