Inside the Numbers: Preseason Week 4

August 31st, 2012 - 2:33pm by Stuart Zaas

3
Three of Denver’s starters on Thursday night at Arizona were 2012 draft picks: CB Omar Bolden, OL Philip Blake and LB Danny Trevathan. Bolden scored the team’s only touchdown (on a kick return) and Trevathan led the team in tackles.

8
Trevathan led the team with eight tackles, seven of which came in the first half at Arizona. His eight tackles were the most registered by a Denver defender this preseason.

57
Wide receiver Greg Orton led the team with three receptions for 57 yards, including a 45-yard catch from Adam Weber that set up Matt Prater’s game-winning field goal.

68
Ronnie Hillman’s 68 rushing yards at Arizona marked the most by a Broncos player this preseason. Hillman carried the ball 14 times, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

85.7
Prater, who won Denver’s game at Arizona with a 44-yard field goal as time expired, finished the day 3-of-3 on kicks. For the preseason, he converted 6-of-7 field goals (85.7 pct.). The only kick Prater missed this preseason was a 57-yard kick against Chicago in the preseason opener.

103
Bolden’s 103-yard kick return touchdown marked the longest by a Broncos player in any game and tied for the third-longest preseason kick return touchdown in the NFL during the last 12 years. Bolden also had a pair of kick return touchdowns in college, playing at Arizona State University.

According to rumors Denver is looking for a vet WR as Willis and Caldwell have not impressed as WR or KR/PR. If they don’t find one many believe Gerel Robinson will make the 53 man roster.

  2. louisianabroncofan says:

i really hope to see bolden keep that up. we could really use an elite return man it would really be huge for the offense. i also love seeing hillman run he has a ton of potential and behind mcgahee and possibly moreno he’s the perfect complimentry or 3rd down back. we should have an effective run game as long as injuries dont bite us. as far as a passing game to go with it well……

  3. tlcat06 says:

Wow. The anxiety is killing me!

  4. louisianabroncofan says:

i know willis hasnt impressed me ab. not even the slightest. i dont see how he can be on the team much longer. just a bone headed butter fingers and it over rules any good he may have. how on earth do you recover an onside kick with ZERO threat of the other team getting it 2 yards before the 10 yard mark? really?

  5. louisianabroncofan says:

whats everyones opinion on robinson? i like him okay. but i think caldwell is pretty good too. hey cat hows things?

  6. RH709 says:

I’d take Robinson over Caldwell and Willis over Robinson (my a hair).

Eitherway, I personally think WR will be Decker, Thomas, Stokes, Caldwell and Willis. I’ve seen some people hre argue for 6 WR’s but I don’t see that happening. In Indy Manning ran most of his plays from 11 personnel. We will not be seeing a whole lot of 5 WR sets and if on a rare occasion we do, my guess would be that it would include at least one TE in the slot.

There will not be a FB on this team (sorry Gronk). Again, the 11 personnel allignment. If for some reason we need a FB, it will be handled by a TE (this will also be extremely rare)

I am hoping Robinson clears waivors and makes the PS. I like his size and athletic ability. See if he can develope.

  7. louisianabroncofan says:

i’m not a big caldwell fan but i like him more than robinson. RH u like willis more than me so if youre right your line up looks like what it would be if the coaches like him too. who knows really. but i dont think 6 wr’s are out of the question and i dont think keeping a fullback is out of the question. fox likes that power run game and a fullback can be a part of that in alot of situations. keep in mind they traded for him. question is does the offense they are tweaking to suit manning gonna make it worth it to keep the fb. again not sure but i guess we’ll see! all questions i cannot wait to see the answers too.

  8. strandoftds82 says:

I`m impressed with Robinson. Go for it!!!!

  9. alaskanbronco06 says:

Foxs offensive scheme utilizes a FB. And despite what many think our whole offense wont be what Manning is used to. However part of it will be. Which is why I think 6 WRs are highly likely.

  10. alaskanbronco06 says:

Robinson has impressed me a lot more than Caldwell has and he hasnt made the mental errors that Willis has made.

  11. strandoftds82 says:

Jeff Legwald, insider of the DP said on 850 KOA moments ago, don`t be surprised if the Broncos only go with just 2 QB`s. If thats the case, both Hanie and weber get cut.

  12. strandoftds82 says:

With Bolden making impressive plays as K/R last night, Willis could be out of a job says Legwald.

  13. RH709 says:

I can see why others are not high on Willis. He has had some drops and the onsides kickoff thing wasn’t smart. However, I like his speed. Again, we are talking about a guy who will be a 5th WR so I don’t fully expect any of them to be without flaw.

I really wouldn’t be that shocked if Denver kept 4 RB’s (Big Will, Hillman, Ball and KnowGo) and only went with 2 QB’s (PMFM and Oz). But again, thats just me and I know people will argue that you HAVE to have three but I don’t necessarily think so.

  14. RH709 says:

    Beat me to it Strand

  15. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand im hearing the same about both. But Weber being brought to the PS. Willis and Caldwell both havnt been impressing in the return game and havnt been that impressive as WRs as well.

  16. strandoftds82 says:

Robinson just might make the team. He`s got good hands.

  17. strandoftds82 says:

I bet Moreno either gets cut or traded. My gut feeling is he`s gone.

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

Jeremy Beal has been place on IR with a left knee injury

  19. RH709 says:

    Alaska,
As a counter to the FB and 6 WR that you say for a Fox offense. I say that it’s a JDR/Fox defense and it’s a McCoy/Manning offense. Fox proved last season that he is ok with giving the offense and the QB some leeway to do what is best for them.

  20. strandoftds82 says:

I just got word that John Elway is going to be on KOA at 5:50 pm MNT. I gotta hear this!!

  21. killerkod says:

Willis has been extremely unimpressive…….and Caldwell’s hands have been stone cold. He’s dropped too many passes. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re both cut.

  22. alaskanbronco06 says:

Strand I think it is he gets traded or stays.

  23. strandoftds82 says:

And the Broncos are going to have a news conference at 5:00 MNT. Its coming down the pipe!!

  24. The Dane says:

Lindsay Jones, Denverpost: “First roster move for #Broncos announced: Jeremy Beal to IR with knee sprain”

  25. strandoftds82 says:

AB, he did some decent things last night, Moreno was productive. Question is will he stick.

  26. RH709 says:

When Moreno is healthy and plays aggressive he can be a good back. I think he stays but he will be on his last leg.

  27. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yes last year he was lenient about what the offense did but a lot of it was still his scheme. It will be the same way this year with Manning. Fox and Manning have both made it clear that the scheme will contain aspect of McCoy Manning and FOX. Fox and McCoys uses a FB and Mannings has a lot 5 WR sets and the 6th WR gives some rest time to the other 5 during the game.

  28. strandoftds82 says:

Moreno is only good going to the outside and catching the ball in the open field. He stinks going up the middle.

  29. alaskanbronco06 says:

New Blog about Beal going to IR

  30. strandoftds82 says:

That sounds about right to me AB, 6 WR`s should do it along with 3 TE`s.

  31. RH709 says:

I have never seen Manning run “a lot” of 5 reciever sets. Mannings most common base formation is a single back, a TE at the LOS, 2 WR on one side and a 3rd on the other side (this is called 11 personnel or 113). Manning ran this scheme almost esclusively in Indy. I do think he will use more formations in Denver (he has during the preseason) but I still see him using 11 personnel more often than anything else.

  32. RH709 says:

Tamme and Dressen are a lock at TE. Green gets the third spot but has the early season suspension. Thomas is on the bubble and most likely doesnt make the cut.

  33. alaskanbronco06 says:

Funny because in Indy I saw a lot of 5 WR sets as well. Wasnt the main offense but saw a lot of it. When he ran it it was out of the bunch. 3 WRs on his right bunched a couple yards off the RT with two on the left one out wide the other in off the LT. They ran it a lot due to the fact their run game was always questionable and to help open it up they would spread the offense out and make them think pass then switch back to his main scheme with the single back. Where they would bust off some nice gains in the run and use a lot of play actions.

  34. RH709 says:

I’ll watch an old game and count the number of 113 sets and the number of 005 sets. I’m not trying to hate, I think this would be the only real way to settle any dispute.

  35. alaskanbronco06 says:

One old game doesnt settle anything. My dad is a huge Indy fan and I watched every game with Manning at QB and saw about 50% from the set your saying then 30% from a 5WR set. I didnt say it was what he ran the most. Just that he ran it a lot.

  36. Pappabill says:

I would keep the 2 quarterbacks that moved the team into scoring position with less playing time last night. I would also keep Jeremiah Johnson over lance ball, inside as well as outside runner with pass catching capabilities, and chances are Moreno gets hurt again and JJ is a better replacement than Ball would be.Robinson seems move like he wants the job VS Caldwell or Willis. Also would for sure keep Jim Leonhard. Sorry to see Beal go to IR, thought he was making great strides
