Inside the Numbers: Preseason Week 2

August 20th, 2012 - 8:04am by Stuart Zaas

1
Rookie DL Malik Jackson recorded his first career sack, a 5-yard takedown of Seattle QB Russell Wilson in the third quarter. Jackson led the team with two quarterback hurries in the game.

2
S David Bruton got his hands on a pair of Seahawks punts in the first half, while also registering two solo tackles on defense and a team-best two special teams stops.

3
CB Chris Harris led all players with three pass breakups, all of which occurred in the first half.

5
Five different Broncos tied for the team lead with four tackles in the game: LB Joe Mays, LB Steven Johnson, S Mike Adams, DL Derek Wolfe and DL Jamie Blatnick.

69
P Britton Colquitt unleashed a 69-yard punt in the fourth quarter that represented his longest punt ever in a game (high school, college or professional). With a 10-yard holding penalty tacked on to the play that began at the Denver 6, Seattle started its ensuing drive from its own 15-yard line – a 79-yard field position swing.

100.3
Peyton Manning’s QB rating in his seven total games (preseason and regular season) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Manning has completed 136-of-198 passes for 1,445 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in Denver’s home stadium.

One thing I forgot to mention was how good Colquitt was…………that 69 yard bomb was awesome. We got ourselves quite a leg in this guy and he is a game changer with his ability to flip the field.

  2. tlcat06 says:

Colquitt was AMAZING! Love that guy… we were all hey impressed!

  3. tlcat06 says:

    Hey=very

  4. tlcat06 says:

    BT did you get mine?

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

I wonder who will be playing after Peyton this week.. Could be very telling on who we’re going with fpr our back up. My vote is holding only two QB’s this year, and I think Weber will slip past waivers.

Does anyone know of Weber is eligable for the practice squad again this season?

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

    Lol. Having issues typing today…

  9. DenverCB says:

Hey BT not sure if i already posted my prediction a while ago or not so here it goes again(maybe)

    Season Prediction-

    10-5-1

    yea thats a tie hahaha

  10. tlcat06 says:

OT- I don’t know… how many years has he been with us? Isn’t the limit 4 seasons on PS? I’m not sure on that either.

If that’s the case, I hope it’s Brock. I know he struggled last week, but I don’t want to keep Caleb Hanie.

  11. tlcat06 says:

    DenverCB–Who do we tie? :)

  12. strandoftds82 says:

Oh yes, Weber is eligible. A player can be on the practice squad for a few years, even if he`s on the main roster for half a season. I`m not sure if it`s 2 years or three, it`s one or the other I believe.

  13. OrangeTsunami says:

I wouldn’t even question it, until I read that Omon isn’t eligable for it. Weber went undrafted in 2011, so he’s got to have a few more years. I think holding just Brock on the roster, is our best bet, given the injuries/suspensions we’re dealing with. We need that extra roster spot, and I can’t see someone picking up Weber for their 53 man roster.

  14. OrangeTsunami says:

If Peyton gets hurt, Osweiler finishes the game, and then we make roster moves to call up Weber and go from there. Just my opinion of course.

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

Tarvaris Jackson is also out there, among other that will be cut. I doubt anyone will trade for him, and he’ll most likely be let go, and will just wait for the phone ring during the season.

  16. strandoftds82 says:

Elway had only one back up for many years. He knows the ways of ole Shanny. It just might happen that way.

  17. tlcat06 says:

OT- We’ll see. We had four? QB last year so I wouldn’t be shocked if we had three this season. I just was kind of bummed that Adam didn’t get to play on Saturday because I wanted to see him more than Brock–I am still hoping that Brock is our future, not Plan B.

  18. strandoftds82 says:

I`m not going to stress about it. But ya, your right, way too many injuries especially at LB. Ouch!

  19. strandoftds82 says:

    Morning Cat!

  20. OrangeTsunami says:

Well, when Orton is your stater, and Tebow not really being a QB, there’s a need to hold a few extra QB’s… :P

  21. tlcat06 says:

True OT. I didn’t even think about Tarvaris Jackson.

  22. strandoftds82 says:

I`d go with these RB`s to start the season.
    1. McGahee
    2. Hillman
    3. Ball
    4. JJ
    5. Omon (if we have five RB`s)
    Moreno is a gonner!!

  23. Stuart Zaas says:

Players are only allowed to be on a practice squad for a maximum of three seasons. If a player is on practice squad for three or more weeks in a season, then it is considered a full year towards their max of three.

In order to be on the practice squad, players cannot have an accrued season of experience. Players with an accrued year of experience can still be eligible as long as they were on the active roster for fewer than nine regular season games during any of their accrued seasons.

The practice squad rules are complicated, but to answer your question, yes, Adam Weber is eligible this year.

  24. killerkod says:

Yeah, I was surprised that Webber didn’t get any reps in that game…………but given PM played the entire half and the broncos were limited in possessions in the 2nd half, I think that’s just how it worked out.

Os just couldn’t get anything going…………but I think he’ll still be number 2.

  25. killerkod says:

    thanks for the breakdown Stuart……………..

  26. strandoftds82 says:

Thanks for the clarification Stuart. So there it is in black and white for us OT.

  27. killerkod says:

I was disappointed that oman only got 1 rush attempt………..was hoping to see more of the guy.

I’d also love to see Hillman in action and see what he can do………………hope this hammy injury doesn’t nag him all year.

  28. OrangeTsunami says:

I knew it was pretty complicated, thanks for explaining Stuart.

  29. strandoftds82 says:

Me too Kod. Fox thinks that Hillman is going to be a solid weapon for us. Fox says that Hillman lights it up in practice when he`s healthy. I can hardly wait to watch him.

  30. killerkod says:

yeah, they’re doing the right thing and letting it heal before making it worse……….Im just a selfish fan that wants to see him play! lol

  31. OrangeTsunami says:

The RB’s are another tough one.. Pretty odd that we only gave Omon, Moreno, and JJ only one carry on Saturday. I think we know what McGahee is capable of at this point, not sure I see the logic in giving him a bunch of carries.

  32. strandoftds82 says:

McGahee will carry most of the load if he stays healthy, fallowed by Hillman and Ball. I bet we keep either JJ or Omon in case one RB goes down.

  33. strandoftds82 says:

    *Follow* ooops

  34. OrangeTsunami says:

I meant giving McGahee a bunch of carries in the preseason. I agree with that assessment strand, but I’d like to see a heavy dose of JJ and Omon, to get a better gauge of them. Moreno is really hanging on for dear life, and he might end up being the odd man out. Just sucks to get nothing for him, but it happens.. Despite the ball security issues, the coaching staff seems to be real high on Ball, given his versatility.

  35. tlcat06 says:

I appreciate you clearing that up for us, Stuart. It is confusing, but it’s nice to know that Weber could be on the PS this year.

  36. tlcat06 says:

The whole second part of the game was odd for me guys. I didn’t understand half of why we did what we did.

  37. strandoftds82 says:

We are at the half way point of the preseason, so the first cuts are on the 28th, two days after we play S.F. It`s going to get interesting soon. But the real fun begins after we play Arizona and teams must cut down to the 53 man roster by September 2. We might even snag a player or two thats been cut from a team where we need depth such as the LB position.

  38. strandoftds82 says:

Cat, the reason Fox left our 3 and 4 stringers out in the game is to get a true gauge on how certain players play. In the preseason, its about finding quality depth and ST players as well. Its weird, but they can care less about winning a preseason game. Its about observation on key players trying to make the team, so when it comes to that, let the chips fall about the win or loss column. I hope that helps a bit.

  39. OrangeTsunami says:

Well, I agreed 100% with giving Osweiler all the reps behind Peyton, and I hope continue to do the same. These reps should be viewed as an asset, and why waste them on Hanie, who is clearly not going to drastically improve at this point. Giving some to Weber might make some sense, but not if we’re trying to sneak him on our practice squad. I say give Osweiler 100% of the available reps in these last two games, it’s invaluable experience.

  40. strandoftds82 says:

In other words they let these players struggle and press thru no matter how hard it is to watch. The cream always rises to the top when evaluating talent. You got to watch the 3rd and 4ths to get the most for depth. It takes patience to watch sloppy football.

  41. killerkod says:

I’ve got lots of patience strand…………….I survived a ton of sloppy football by our team last season! hahahaha

  42. strandoftds82 says:

In actuality, those players shouldn`t play sloppy football, but in many cases they do. Thats why they are called players on the bubble.

  43. strandoftds82 says:

And seasons before that too. We looked decent when we had Cutler and the rest of our O before whats his face came here. We were on our way to looking pretty good but that was for naught. I like our chances now. LOL

  44. tlcat06 says:

Strand, I agree with Kod. Watching the second half of that game was not any worse than watching Tebow against the Lions.

It’s a process–working kinks out and getting to know each other in a game situation. Practicing in practice is not the same as playing a game.

  45. strandoftds82 says:

There`s truth to that. I`ll miss Tebow but We are in a much better position to win it all NOW. It`s a process. Thats not a bad thing.

  46. strandoftds82 says:

On the other hand, it`s preseason football. All games get rather sloppy when it comes to the preseason. Only certain players make the team is what I`m saying. So we`re both right, just talking two different circumstances.

  47. strandoftds82 says:

So the Jets haven`t thrown a TD as of yet in this preseason. Interesting!

  48. tlcat06 says:

Neither has Peyton, Strand. To which everyone seems to continue to remind me…

  49. strandoftds82 says:

I hear ya. But in the first game ha played JUST 1 series. I`m not the slightest concerned. I know your not.

  50. tlcat06 says:

Well, Tamme dropped the ball on that one! LOL! Just funny how we didn’t go for it. John Fox is very conservative.
