Inside The Numbers – Divisional Round

January 14th, 2013 - 7:29am by Stuart Zaas

2
Wide receiver Trindon Holliday scored on a 90-yard punt return touchdown and a 104-yard kick return touchdown to mark the longest respective plays in each category in NFL postseason history. He also became the first player in league postseason history to record a punt return touchdown and kick return touchdown in the same playoff game.

3
Quarterback Peyton Manning tied the Broncos’ postseason record with three touchdown passes. He tied John Elway, who did so three times, for that mark.

4
Wide receiver Brandon Stokley’s 15-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter against Baltimore marked the fourth NFL team (Baltimore, Indianapolis, Seattle and Denver) that he has caught a postseason touchdown pass for. He joins Keenan McCardell as the only players in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

13
The kickoff temperature of 13 degrees marked the second-coldest home game in Broncos history. The temperature was the coldest – home or away – in Broncos postseason history.

32
Manning threw three touchdown passes in Denver’s loss to Baltimore to tie him with Dan Marino for the fourth-most passing scores in playoff history.

83
Running back Ronnie Hillman’s 83 rushing yards marked the second-most by a Broncos rookie in a playoff game.

0 – the number of interviews a coach should be allowed if his team is in the playoffs.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

Or as I would call it “The Final Numbers”…

  3. brian_schneider says:

    0 – Playoff wins in 2012
0.31 – Time left with two timeouts for the Broncos to take a knee
1 – Minutes needed for the Broncos needed to run out the clock
    2 – Manning INTs
3 – Obvious blown coverages by the Broncos
50,000+ – Number of dissapointed Broncos fans

  4. baylinorcrush says:

2013 = there is always next year, LOL.

  5. brian_schneider says:

I think the Mayan calander was a prediction for the Broncos 2012 playoff run. haha

  6. OTbroncos says:

Listening to NY sports radio, and they are going on and on talking about the officiating. They said it was the worst officiated game we’ve ever seen from the regular refs, and that’s unbiased opinion. They also ripped Fox…

  7. brian_schneider says:

The problem is with playoff refs, they’re not a crew, they pick the supposedly “best” refs and make a crew. In my opinion, you need to keep the crew together. Harbaugh shouldn’t have been able to have a 5 minute conversation before he challenged, and the refs stopage because the didn’t know how to get calls straightened out really affected our rythm.

  8. BroncoFanJamesR says:

I want to first say Congrats on a great season even if it was a bitter end for the team. I’m not going to get into this game as it’s one for the books but the organization needs to focus on a few items next season in a big way.
Elway and company I’m talking to you….

Start by cutting some dead weight or players that just can’t cut it or need to think about retirement.
Ty needs to get cut, he can’t prove he can stay healthy and we just can’t count on him any longer. Draft a replacement like Wolfe again. Hopefully we can keep Del Rio for next season and he can work on building an even stronger D-Line.
Champ, your great but unless you just had a bad game if you can’t keep up with these younger WR then it’s time to think about retirement.
KnoShow let us down yet again, yes I know injuries are part of the game but you have yet to prove you can remain healthy. This team needs a huge stable of running backs since we can’t seem to keep any to remain healthy a full season.

  9. OTbroncos says:

I just wish we at least went out swinging…

  10. brian_schneider says:

I think Moreno has showed he still deserves to remain a Bronco. I don’t know all the details, but I think it was a coaching decision to keep him out in case we won he’d be needed next week. He does seem to have the injury bug.

Just goes to show you, like we saw with Orton, if you play not to lose, you’re also not playing to win either.

  11. brian_schneider says:

OTbroncos: I hear you, we went out an a kneel down..a frickin’ kneel down.

  12. OTbroncos says:

It’s by far the worst part of this loss for me. I can deal with players not making plays, as no one is immune to failure, but simply not going for it and playing it so conservative is killing me… It makes me sick, and it’s really just starting to fully sink in for me..

  13. OTbroncos says:

Only thing that makes me feel better, is this a mirror image of John Elway and the Broncos after the Jags loss in ’96. Here’s to seeing another aging, all-time great QB, with critics about winning the big game, proving his critics wrong and going out on top.

  14. CARAMELLOO says:

Despite what many think I feel this was our best shot to make it to the super bowl. People always say next year next year. The fact is that we have a QB who simply can’t win in cold weather games. So how can we expect a super bowl appearance with him unless we travel to some mild weather stadiums during the playoffs as a #3 or #4 seed or something.

Also Champ has been getting exposed the past few season bc teams no longer fear him. The game vs the Bengals this year showed it as Green abused him. Then here comes Smith of the Ravens who can only run deep routes bc he’s not a very good WR and he abuses Champ. Champ needs to channel is inner Charles Woodson and move to Safety.

  15. CARAMELLOO says:

I’m glad we have Manning but his post season record doesn’t mirror his regular season. 14-2, 13-3, 12-4, 11-5 is cool and all but AFC title game and Super Bowl appearance means a whole lot more than regular season glory.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

OT, nice to see you slowly come out your fog of niceness, LOL.

  17. brian_schneider says:

Payton’s just going to have to get used to the fact that Eli is Daddy’s favorite. LOL

  18. brian_schneider says:

    *Peyton*

  19. brian_schneider says:

I think in order for us to realy compete at the next level, we need a good HB. Peyton’s not going to be able to play forever and whoever comes in next, whether it’s Osweiler or someon else, will need a good running game. A good running game would’ve gotten us that one yard we needed to run out the clock.

  20. Olap2009 says:

OTbroncos, I am with you, I think it was the 4th Q 3rd and 5 Ravens had no time outs and the broncos call a run, what was that. you mean we did not have a play in our playbook to gain 5 yards for a first down? get the first down and the game is over and also the kneel down was sicking.

  21. 10061949 says:

Same old John Fox. When he was with Panthers, he was so conservative, he would try not to lose instead of trying to win. The Carolina fans were so glad to see him leave. When you have a Manning, there should be no such thing as being conservative. He will never change.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

This game is now referred to as The Rocky Mountain Miracle on ESPN (for the benefit of Ravens fans of course).

I personally will remember it as The Rocky Mountain Throw Away, haha.

  23. Olap2009 says:

Remember this, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME, HELLO

  24. brian_schneider says:

“I sure wish we could’ve gotten one kneel down in there, but we..we just didn’t have enough time” said no coach ever.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

    I get it now.

Fox is a grand grand child of Pierre de Coubertin, renovator of the modern Olympic games in the late 19th century.

    His motto:

“The most important thing is not winning but taking part”.

And some here say I’m too historical about stuff….

  26. OTbroncos says:

Well, by the time I got a chance to read the comments in here the next day, it was a fire storm.. I was trying to stop the bleeding, and didn’t see the need to pile on.

I’d like to ask Fox why he went for the 52 yard FG in cold weather, when we could have punted. The result of the missed FG gave them a short field at the end of the half, and of course they scored a TD. Where was the conservative play call on that one?

McCoy was with Fox in Carolina, which one is to blame? Fox is a defensive coach, and to my knowledge, Fox does not demand to have control over play selection. We need a new OC, who is agressive and experienced, and is given full control of the offense.

  27. baylinorcrush says:

Who cares who the blame falls on really, Fox ball is Fox ball and whatever needs to be done to change that must be done IMO.

While none of us knows for certain who is exactly to blame or whether it’s a group effort, Elway certainly does and I expect him to correct it.

BTW, it’s very rare that a coaching philosophy doesn’t go back to the top, specially in something widely called Fox ball, but hey, what do I know…. Fox ball, that’s all I know, just like all the Carolina fans do.

  28. brian_schneider says:

Fox: The thing is, Broncos fans, it’s not that I’m conservative, it’s that I just don’t care.
    Broncos Fans: Don’t….don’t care?
Fox: It’s a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my butt off and the Broncos get a few extra yards, I don’t see another dime, so where’s the motivation? And here’s something else fans, I have three different kneel down formations right now.
Broncos Fans: I beg your pardon?
    Fox: Three kneel down formations.
    Broncos Fans: Three?
Fox: Three, Broncos fans. So that means what when I’m all conservative, I have three different formations I can do it in. That’s my only real motivation is to not be aggressive, that and the fear of losing my job. Buy you know, Broncos fans, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

    LOL!!!

  29. Olap2009 says:

Last year we need 5 yds we run the ball with Tebow, this year we get Payton someone who can throw the ball for 300 yds and all we need to live another day is 5 yds and guest what Yup we run the ball I guess you can tell that play is killing me all I that keeps going threw my mind is first down and we win the game I am sick over that 1 play.

  30. OTbroncos says:

I would agree with that bay, and even if an OC did have a different philosophy than the HC, the HC is ultimately responsible, and could override any decision. All I’m saying is I would be shocked if Fox gets fired over this, not after back to back playoff appearances. Our only chance for change would be for McCoy to be replaced by a highly respected OC, who would be given control of the offense, and could stand up to Fox. I could see Fox accepting that scenario after this offseason of second guessing..

  31. OTbroncos says:

I’ve been skeptical of McCoy landing a job all along. Given there are a lot of jobs still out there, I hope his number is called..

  32. OTbroncos says:

Anyone read the article in the DP about how all the teams left in the playoffs were not in the top 10 in sacks this season? I always want us to draft defense, especially pass rushers, but perhaps it’s time to double down on offense?

  33. brian_schneider says:

Does anyone else find it odd, that the first play in OT last year they let ‘ol what’s his name throw it on the very first play, very aggressive in my mind. This year they don’t let the great PFM throw it on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd down.

I think the difference is last year they never expected to make it to the playoffs, so it was just a gravy game for them, win or loss.
This year there was more riding on the game so they played conservative.

It must be like a maze inside the head of coaches…I don’t understand it.

  34. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    love those numbers schneider

  35. brian_schneider says:

I’m always more pessimistic than optimistic and that’s one of my New Year’s resolutions to be better about, but I mean c’mon all the numbers they show are find, but the one…the ONE number we really care about was on the scoreboard, and we didn’t have enough ‘em.

  36. OTbroncos says:

Good point, but let’s not forget about the play calling with Tebow in the regular season. It was beyond predictable. It was only after we threw the game-plan out the window, did we pull off those miracle wins. The fact that McCoy gets credit for that side show has always been beyond me…

  37. oldsouthstander says:

Looked over my BBBP notes to try and figure out which one’s I’ve posted and which one’s I haven’t and all I got was a headache and the runs. So, I’ll post all of them over the next several days.

  38. strandoftds82 says:

Time to move on. I’m over it already.

  39. tnalen66 says:

i don’t mind the 52 yrd fg try, but Prater hit the fning ball not the ground. On that drive there were 2 no call pass int that really screwed us. I can’t believe Prater hit the tuff. He has kicked how many 50 + fgs. Don’t try to kill it just make contact with a good swing. That was a 10 point swing. He hits it we kick off The ravens would of started at their 20. the Ravens maybe get a FG at best. Jim Cauldwell showed some balls with his play calling. I hope McCoy goes cuz this interviewing doing the playoffs is garbage. Shanny did not let his son do it this year or Kubiac when they were here. i can’t believe all that went wrong. If we would of been blown out by the pats again i could deal with it but to lose the way we did.

  40. tnalen66 says:

    brian i like your #s

I am officially dubbing this game “The Mile High Meltdown.” −2013

And I don’t think i’ll be over this loss until after the Superbowl because i’m going to continue to feel like ‘that could be us.’

  42. SC_BR says:

Fox and Elway said yesterday that they called a kneel down because the team was in shock and they wanted time to regroup and go to overtime focused….

I was thinking about it… I think that time we lacked leadership among the players, we lacked some guy like Ray Lewis to fire up the team and say something like:

“They gave us their best shot, and now is our time to give our best! This game is still in our hands and we can either lower our heads, bitch about it and let it go to overtime, or we can go there and get this done now! It’s our time to go there and fight back like men!”

  43. brian_schneider says:

I agree you want to interview a coach, you wait until their season is over. If McCoy was worried about interviewing, you know the best thing to do in that situation is go out and call a great game and come away with a playoff win. If you’re so worried about interviewing you lose focus on your current team than it’s obvious you don’t want to be part of the team for very long.

  44. The Dane says:

    Looks like McCoy is gone:

Chargers have offered their HC job to Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, and the two sides will try to work through a deal today. – Adam Schefter

  45. OTbroncos says:

Don’t let the door hit you on your way out….

  46. Crush Arizona says:

Its was a combo of bad calls, blown plays on defense, and poor coaching that lost this game….I seen te refs allow the Ravens to do practicly anything they wanted, and ticky tack the Broncos to death. I saw Ravens getting too deep by pushing off on champ and even pushing ime through the end zone and no calls. I seen a blatent pass interferance no call returned for seven. i seen DT get Kicked/tripped when ravens blew cpverage and seemingly no ref on earth was even watching ! Moore just flat out did not get up for this game. And I seen a coach give up on his offense with (31seconds in the game ) in football time and eternity and three timeouts give his half frozen team another qtr on the field…Maybe Fox aint the right guy…..I am real but hurt to be 2 games away 2 years in a row…but this year was even worse cause we were one and done when we had all the Advantages, I hope this will fuel our Boys next year with a fire that the coldest day on Mars can,t put out!

  47. Crush Arizona says:

1 as in 1 and done!
11 as in NEVER FREEKING HAPPEND!
8 in Ravens PI no calls
3 as in the number of timeout we had at the end of that game
31 seconds to get the team together at the end?
45 as in the number of seconds they could have had if they had taken one of those 3 timeouts!
2 as in the shotcallers who made the decision to quit playing to win it, and the exrra ammount of qtrs it took to finally lose it!
12 as in the months I will be butthurt and ridiculed by every raider fan in my neck of the woods
4 as in how many months it willo take for me to get over this season ending

  48. Broncosfan009 says:

There were a few factors that played into the loss to Baltimore. One was the officiating, it was terrible. The pick 6 was a clear P.I. that was not called, that was the big one. And there were many other bad calls that went Baltimore’s way. But even with all the blown calls, our Broncos should have won the game. The biggest problem was the coaching, way too conservative. Baltimore was coming in on a short week, playing at a mile high. Why didn’t we attack them all day with the hurry up offense. Peyton could have ran them into the ground. Any time we had the lead we tried to sit on the ball. To quote Bill Belichick, “You don’t win a war by digging a foxhole and sitting in it…You need to attack.” If John Fox had that philosophy we would have won by two touchdowns. We go out and get Peyton Manning, he plays MVP caliber football all season long. Then, in the 4th quarter with a chance to put the game away on a 3rd and 7, take the ball out of Peyton’s hands and pretty much down the ball. The final 4 teams left in the Superbowl hunt have coaches that attack… Hopefully next season when the game’s on the line, you leave it up to Peyton Manning, not Rahim Moore.
