Hunter Re-signs with Broncos

March 29th, 2012 - 12:47pm by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos re-signed free agent defensive end Jason Hunter on Thursday, the team announced.

Hunter has made 128 tackles, 11 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in 88 career games (23 starts).

He joined the Broncos as a free agent prior to the 2012 season and has appeared in all 32 regular-season games and both playoff contests with the club. He posted a career-high 59 tackles, three sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in 2010 while filling in for injured defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

Last season he finished with 20 tackles, one sack, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Hunter played 50 career games at Division I-AA Appalachian State University, where he helped lead the Mountaineers to a national title as a senior in 2005.

He joins Robert Ayers, Jeremy Beal and Elvis Dumervil as the defensive ends currently on the Broncos roster.

Yup: DT is deep this year! Dont happen very often! No need to draft any more Ofensive wepons except a good running back to help in round 3.
    Just me!

FTR I agree. I would love to have Martin but Turbin and Gray on round 3 will be fine by me. I love Hightower at 25 and a DT at 57. The depth this year is great. Was watching NFLN and Mayock was saying that 7 DTs have 1st round grades and that DTs projected in the 3rd/4th rounds really are a round to low. I think thats huge that Mayock was saying that. I have said many times DTs are deep this year but i never thought something like that to be the case.

Anybody besides me notice the drop off of post’s from TT fans? Not saying thats bad!! Just saying it’s slowed down here. I say let’s move on and talk DENVER BRONCOS FOOTBALL!!

FTR and all Bronco fans – everything good Tebow does the rest of his football career will be thrown up in the collective EFX face – it doesn’t matter how graciously they “let him slip…fall…be thrown away.” Just sayin’ – and likewise every slip-up of Manning will also bring back remembrances of Tebow. Umm – get used to it!

Loved this article on Joe Mays:
    http://www.milehighreport.com/2012/3/29/2911974/the-value-of-denver-broncos-linebacker-joe-mays

He was a guy I have defended on the blog frequently but since Tebow needed my help to get some love on the blog more often – I let it go. Glad to see Joe back.

  10. Broncos LAX says:

Great links sndvl and daddybronc!!! Mays will grow more

  11. alaskanbronco06 says:

Hopefully he learns how to pass cover if hes going to be the starter. I dont think Mays will ever be a true starter at MLB. Hes a good run stopper and special teamer though.

  12. Broncos LAX says:

AB I have thought thatl too but with all do respect Fox knows defense and LBs… As does Del Rio… I don’t think they would make this move thinking Mays has reached his ceiling. They drafted Nate Irving to be MLB and then resigned Mays I think that is really telling on Mays. So I think he may surprise! I guess i just believe in the FO judgement

  13. alaskanbronco06 says:

Im not saying anything against our FO. Im just saying Mays was completely horrible in pass coverage. Mays is a run stopper and special teamer. IMO he isnt a starter in the league. Hes a subber coming in on obvious run plays.

I really hope that if we dont take Hightower Mays can learn to pass cover better or Irving really steps up.

  14. Broncos LAX says:

No AB dont get me wrong I completely agree with you but his contract sends quite a message to me it says the tem believes he is gonna get better has seen something that makes them believe so…

  15. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yea i get that. Im saying i dont think he will be a true starter but the FO will know better. They saw him in practice and what not and i just saw him in games. Him and Irving subbing in and out could be good at MLB.

I still want Hightower though. With Hightowers size 6-2 265 Id see what he can do at DE hes between the size of Doom and Ayers and if he doesnt work out there id move either him or Mays and Irving to OLB and get rid of DJ next year. If Hightower works out at DE have Ayers bulk up another 15-25 pounds put him at DT since Ayers is a run stuffer. Just my thoughts on it.

  16. seweatherman1 says:

I don’t see us drafting any offense at all in the first three or four picks. I believe that the defense is going to get the immediate attention, unless there is an offensive player that Manning has told them to take extra consideration of.

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

FTR…I like Cox or Brockers the best, but Still would be a great addition!

ab,I agree about Mays,he isn’t worth 12 mil for 3 years,I was hoping we would draft an ILB!

I Like the idea of Ayers adding 20-25 lbs and moving inside,I was discussing that with sndvl yesterday!

BTW…I like Vick Ballard RB M.S. in the 4th round,he hits the hole hard, runs low to the ground, and is good on short yardage!

In 2010 Ballard had 968 yds on 186 attempts, that’s 5.2 yds per carry!
    With 19 rushing TDs!

Ballard rushed for 1,728 yards and 22 touchdowns during his sophomore season… Finished season fourth nationally with 144.0 yard-per-game average….that’s almost 2700 yds and 39 TDs in 2 years…the guy knows how to get the ball across the goaline!

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hey administrator ……PLEASE FIX THE BLOG CLOCK!

  19. BeastFromEast92 says:

rbf1…thanks for reminding me about Ballard(remember you were asking me about him the other day) I forgot about him,I’ve seen him play,he’s explosive, but I will be satisfied with any RB that is rock solid!

I absolutely love the fact that Peyton has taken it upon himself to get the players together and start working out immediately…….keeping within the new rules of the CBA.

I mean, he could be a diva and say, “I’m the great PM and I’ll work out when I’m ready.”

But instead he’s working out as much as he can, and would prob do more if her were allowed. That to me speaks volumes as to how serious he’s taking his comeback…………..I love it!

Hoping to soon hear news of him working with Thomas as well. You gotta know thomas and decker are so stoked to know they won’t be primarily blockers this season and more involved in the offense………they’re all licking their chops!

This is going to be an Offense the likes we haven’t seen in a long, long time and I can’t wait!

I also think that JDR takes this D and shapes them into a top ten. A top ten D and a top 5 O should translate into a challenger for the overall AFC record.

Oh, and I played the broncos in Madden last night and No-Show left the game with an injury……….surprise, surprise! lol

  21. brian_schneider says:

I signed Addai, who was a FA in Madden, and he has replaced Moreno as the starter. Fannin is 2nd string and Moreno has been demoted to 3rd string. haha

  22. brian_schneider says:

Just wondering why we haven’t re-signed Thomas at DT. Is he not developing as we’d hoped he would?

  23. killerkod says:

not sure brian…………haven’t heard any word on contract talks either so who knows?

  24. OrangeTsunami says:

Not that we didn’t know this already, but TRich looked like a BEAST at the Bama pro day…. Did you see any of the footage?? My God….

AB – I don’t see BB trading up to get him, but if he does it’ll cost him more than what you projected IMO

  25. brian_schneider says:

Wonder if that’s an indication that we may actually draft a DT or two?

Can’t wait for the draft..ughh…taking forever! At least last year we had the lockout to talk about haha.

  26. Bronco_Turtle says:

I’m not sure why you’d be surprised that a QB is holding workouts with his team…

Last year guys like Mark Sanchez and TT were holding camps for players.. TT even picked up some of the bills for his Teammates…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he’s doing what he should be… and I’m even Happier that he is supposedly looking back to form… see what he’s got in pads, but this is a good start… I want Peyton to be Great again!!!

Is there a sight somewhere we can go to check the progress of Injured Players on our Roster such as Warren or Fannin?

  27. DenverOrange says:

my guess is we are drafting DT in first 2 rounds

  28. Bronco_Turtle says:

DO, I hope we get two with our first three picks… I hope we don’t pass on Hightower to take a DT though… I’d be heartbroken and sick to my stomach…

  29. Bronco_Turtle says:

AB, Has your girlfriend decided that she’s Pissed at you yet, for getting her pregnant? or is she still excited?

Fair Warning, when she gets to about six months and is packing your bundle of fun, you will officially be responsible for everything that is wrong with the planet!!! Good Luck!

  30. OrangeTsunami says:

Given the deep DT class, I’d be happy with Hightower in round one, best available DT round two, best available RB in round three, then back to defense!

  31. Bronco_Turtle says:

I’d be cool with that also OT as long as we snag Hightower in Rd 1…

I’ve been watching alot of film on Fannin, and he is the real deal when healthy… Hopefully he can contribute

  32. OrangeTsunami says:

I like Fannin as well, but I’d love to let Fox draft a RB this year, seeing he’s got a great track record drafting RB’s.. McGahee has got quite a few miles on him, and both Fannin and Moreno are coming off injuries.. We need a little more security at RB, especially since we don’t want PM dropping back 50+ times a game…

  33. Bronco_Turtle says:

I don’t want Hanie to have to drop back at all… cough… I mean, Peyton…

OT, what are the odds that Foxxy is going to make a play for one of his old RB’s in CAR? they signed Tolbert, and that seams like to many RB’s in one backfield…

I’d prefer to go Rookie, but I’ve read a couple places that they expect DEN to make a play for Stewart…

  34. savinghyrule says:

Is anyone else having to go through the archives to see the blogs?

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

I could see a draft day trade for either Stewart or Goodson.. That would be more of a sure thing than a rookie IMO, and we have enough question marks at RB as it is.. I think it would be a good idea, as we can’t be in a position of not having a healthy/productive RB as the season goes on.. We need an effective run game, as well as blockers for PM

  36. OrangeTsunami says:

I would put RB right up there with DT as far as needs go… RB might even be a bigger need IMO

  37. Bronco_Turtle says:

nah… our run game will struggle regardless this season without TT…

Better shore up the D, and then put it on Peyton to pick up the slack, he is a FHOF…

It is paramount for us to make the D as suffocating as possible… many have gotten down on Mays at MLB, but if you had an offensive Lineman putting hands on you 5 yards behind the LOS you would see how hard it is to make plays…

    WE NEED BEEEEEF!!!!

  38. OrangeTsunami says:

The only RB we can really count on is McGahee, and he was breaking down towards the end of last year….

  39. brian_schneider says:

savinghyrule: I had the same issue. Not sure if admin is doing some blog maintanace or what.

  40. brian_schneider says:

Yeah but since we won’t be running the ball 50+ times either McGahee should be a little bit more fresh thoughout the season.

  41. OrangeTsunami says:

Defensive from 7 and RB’s is our focus

You do realize that while we led the league in rushing under TT, we also led the the league in rushing attempts… Statistics are often misleading, as they can be used in different ways to prove various points

  42. OrangeTsunami says:

    Defensive front 7 and RB’s

Agreed McGahee will carry a lesser load, but we need to be extra sure IMO, in case we get bit by the injury bug..

  43. brian_schneider says:

I know this is a passing league and everyone says so. I’d like to see balance, if we can rush the ball 25-30 times and throw the ball 30-35, I’d consider that very balanced. I’m a big supporter of the “quality not quantity” theory. If we rush the ball 20 times for 100 yards and that’s it well it isn’t worth much. If we rush the ball 10 times for 40 yards and one of them results in a TD well than that’s worth a whole lot more than yardage and no TDs.

  44. killerkod says:

turtle………..I never said I was surprised………just happy that he didn’t waste anytime to build some chemistry with Decker and try to get himself back into game shape.

DT is the paramount pick in my opinion. One thing I do agree with turtle on is we need the beef bigtime! That position is key for us to contend as a top ten D this season.

  45. OrangeTsunami says:

Rushing the ball will keep PM out of harms way, so I expect we will be rushing the ball a lot, contrary to public opinion.. It also keeps the D honest for when we do pass, but maybe most importantly, the RB is responsible for picking up and blocking the blitz on passing downs… We need to be over stocked at the RB position this year, and I trust John Fox knows that

  46. killerkod says:

I hear ya brian……….not much point in a ton of rushing yards when they don’t put points on the board. That was one of our biggest problems last year…………tons of yards but mostly only punts to show for it.

  47. killerkod says:

But I disagree with you turtle that our run game will suffer cause TT isn’t there. If anything, I think it has a chance to be even more successful. With TT is was run, and mostly run only……….

But with PM, D’s will have to respect our passing game now, and that will lead to more lanes to run on. Sure we’ll miss TT’s running ability, but with fresh RB’s, I think they can more than make up those yards TT contributed last season.

  48. TwoGunz says:

I dunno if anyone has seen this yet but its pretty Motivating about PM.
