The Broncos bolstered their defense on Thursday, signing free agent defensive lineman Jason Hunter.
Hunter, a fifth-year pro out of Appalachian State, has racked up 66 tackles and 7 sacks in 56 career games with Green Bay and Detroit.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a career season with the Lions in 2009, notching 34 tackles and five sacks in 14 games, including nine starts.
Detroit released Hunter on Monday, two days after he recorded a pair of tackles in the team’s preseason-opening loss in Pittsburgh. The Broncos host Hunter’s former team on Saturday in their preseason home opener.

This is definitely a notch up from the recent signings when all we got were practice squad players. How did we make room for him?
baylinorcrush,
The Broncos officially waived offensive lineman Dustin Fry today.
This is obviously a move to get a guy who can give us some of the sacks we desperately need.
Thank you Eric, much appreciated. I guess with true center Walton and Beadles who can back up the position, there was no more need for Fry, I’m fine with this move.
Jason Hunter:
Height: 6-4 Weight: 271 Age: 26
Born: 8/28/1983 Charlotte , NC
College: Appalachian State
Experience: 5th season
Another sign that we are officially switched back to the 43..
Back and forth, just like last game at Cinci.
Five sacks in 14 games?Come on down! He can help get pressure on the QB .I like it. Welcome to Broncoland. Good luck. It’ll be fun for him playing his old team.GO BRONCOS!!
It seemed like we played very little 34 in Cincy.. when they have a LB up on the LOS, to me, is still the 43…
It’s a hybrid that is really a 43 with the ability to line up the the 34 once in a while to make it look like they can…lol
I just don’t think we have the linebackers to get it done right now..
It the Defensive Dissaray.. the DD…
The DD is taking over the QQ, haha.
We can’t leave out the Special Teams Slump… the SS..
I think its a good move.I mean you let go of a guy who probably was not going to play this year at all and has pretty much no experience in the NFL and you sign a guy who has experience in the NFL and who can step in and make plays.Overall good move by the Broncos.GO BRONCOS!!!
Hey Ayers and Moss both played DE in college,so I would welcome the change back to the 4-3 scheme, whichever works best is what we should run.IMO
Ayers or Moss could line up at OLB or DE and keep the other team guessing.Something to think about if we have to.
BTW,,,I like the addition of Hunter.
Baylin…I was reading an earlier post of yours, and I agree with not limiting Tebows running skills, thats part of what makes him a great player, and you’re right he just needs to know when to slide. It’s like having a 2 headed monster, you cut one of his heads off,you still have to deal with the other one (passing-running).He reminds me of Steve Young but bigger, but we all know what cut his career short, concussions, aparently he didn’t slide enough either.Even a bruising RB has a hard time playing for 15 years in the NFL,it’s a Helluva beating for anybody, and it takes it’s toll too.Let’s hope he learns quick, and I read he’s not going to play vs Detroit.
Orton gets a 1 year contract extension
I guess TT is really banged up, we had to extend Orton’s contract. AHAHAHAHAHA JK
Good move by the Bronco`s and Hunter has the experience. I like It. Bring on the sacks D.
I think thats a wise move to sign Orton for another year. Smart.
A one year extension for Orton makes sense for both parties, for Orton because he gets to make money next year, to where without a contract at all no one might of been willing to sign him for an uncertain year next summer, and for the Broncos because if Tebow is not ready to take over next year they got their starter and if Tebow gets the nod they have a good back up, because they know now Quinn isn’t going to cut it and I would imagine that helped the decision process.
So both sides get short term insurance, but the one year extension speaks loudly as to who is really the long term QB here and what direction McD intends to go (Tebow). But like I said Orton took it for all it’s worth since it might of been very hard to get a contract for 2011 with any other team. So everybody is a happy family, totally in the case of McD, sort of in the case of Orton, but that’s the best he could do for now, so it’s all good. That’s my take on it.
First Off I was glad that Orton got his extension. He has been a team player and his numbers for those of you who keep track of stats are very good. He can win football games here in Denver! Brady Q is a great QB but is behind Orton in confidence and knowledge of the McD system! For the Tim Tebow fans give it time but for now Orton is our man! So let’s get behind are starter and our team and get ready for BRONCO FOOTBALL!
Just me!

Lindsay Jones reports the contract #s from the NFLN:
Orton was previously playing on a one-year, $2.621 million contract through the end of the 2010 season. The NFL Network is reporting that Orton will make about $9 million in salary in 2011, bringing the balance of his contract over two years to around $12 million. According to the NFL Network, the deal includes $5.5 million guaranteed.
Looking at these figures makes me wonder if Tebow starting will be pushed back another year, that’s an awful lot of money to pay a back up, unless it’s to show appreciation for what he did here last year and will do this year at a bargain price. Tebow waiting in the wings until 2012 would hardly be a popular decision. Interesting, could go either way.
FTR, with all due respect, where do you get that Quinn is a great QB, from Cleveland, Notre Dame…?
Great move signing Orton! He is a very good number one and if things go south, he will be a great number two for TT. I don’t see him (Orton)NOT starting next year but if we do go with TT….Kyle will help him any way he can.
Nice job McD.
This is what Quinn did in three years in Cleveland where he played only 14 games:
Compl 184, Att 353, compl % 52.1, yards 1,902, avg 5.4, TD 10, INT 9, sacks 20, yards lost 113, rate 66.8, fumbles, 4 lost 3.
That’s hardly great is all I’m saying.
Yeah, at 9 million a year in 2011, I would help anybody….
Baylin
I think that BQ is a victim of his draft to Cleveland and not given the chance to at least compete. So I guess the answer to your question on how I figure he is a good QB would be his time at Norte Dame. Can you think of someone else we should have pushing Orton? I am thinking TT could be the future but you must not judge BQ too quickly! Let it play out and let the best man win! All I want is the Broncos to compete this year! Just me!!
GO BRONCOS
FTR
I hear you FTR, but in all honesty I would take Tebow as our #2 right now over Quinn, I’ve seen enough through his ranks in the pros to make my opinion of him, and I don’t feel he can help us, sorry but that’s how I see it. The guy had plenty of shots in Cleveland, maybe not in the best of situation, but he was given his shots and he always found a way to blow it.
Stats are only good for Madden games and Fantasy Football!! I think we have a good QB core!
FTR
Anyhow very little sense in talking about a guy who will most likely have no impact on this football team this year, so it’s all cool either way.
The only stats that count are wins and losses, so to take it easy on you, I won’t look up his win and loss record in the pros, LOL.
It’s all good Baylin I see your point! But it’s too early to call! I am not on the TT band wagon yet.
FTR
Please do not take it “easy on me” or other blogers feel free to post your stats. We all look forward to the info!

Lindsay Jones just came out with the attendance record for TC practices and even with the Tebow phenomena, this year couldn’t beat the record set in 2007, year of the Cutler phenomena:
Though fans set single-session attendance records on Aug. 1 — the morning practice — and at Invesco Field on Aug. 7, the average attendance at Dove Valley was not a team record, much to my surprise.
The team averaged 1,410 fans per practice at Dove Valley, which was the highest since 2007, when average attendance was 1,438. What was the buzz at camp in 2007? Must have been all the hoopla for new starting quarterback Jay Cutler.
I`m gonna make a prediction. Quinn does`nt take a single snap this year, even If Orton gets hurt. just sating.
Ok, since you asked, Quinn’s win/loss record in Cleveland: 3-9
I am with you strandoftds, I would kind of dread the day he comes in, that’s for sure, way to inconsistent to make me comfortable.
I`m also bias in one regard and that I`m a die hard USC fan and I just can`t stand Notre Dame. But this is pro ball and maybe some day I`ll get over it.
“Orton earns contract extension”- now that is an example of karma!
Congratulations KO!!!
Thank god TC is over. Talk about a nightmare of injuries. Whatever model/regiment/program was used, I have a suggestion for next year-throw it in the Arkansas right above Salida.
Anyway, its not to long now… 3 weeks for kickoff in NO.
GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!
I like the move with Orton, a nice insurance policy and if Tebow is ready next year, trade value for Orton (assuming he has the good year we seem to be expecting this year). There’d be no option to trade him if his contract had ran out.
Good reward for a professional attitude as well.
And Hunter sounds ok, to get 5 sacks for the Lions last year is pretty impressive, why’d they let him go, because of Suh and VDB?
FTR: I think you make a good point about Quinn it is too early to say what happens with him, remember he is still learning McDaniels offense even though there is some crossover from ND. Based on Baylincrush argument Orton is a bad player because he threw 3 ints in last years first preseason game.
Baylincrush: Walton is not backed up by Beadles. Hochstein backs him up followed by Olsen from Notre Dame.
If anyone wants to compare a super bowl caliber Bear team and the Cleveland Browns a last place team since the return of the franchise please do.
anyone know the status of Mcbath??
I became a member today just so I could defend my boy Kyle. Please stop all this Hoopla about Tim Tebow. Kyle is our starter, and if not for the labor disputes he would of gotten a lengthy contract. Anyone who is looking for Tim to be our guy and can’t wait for Klye to get out; please keep your comments to yourself. What happened to supporting your STARTING QUARTERBACK?!?!?! No disrespect, my comments will always and only come with love, I’m just saying Tim is NOT our guy so lets support OUR starting Q. Other than that, happy to finaly be a member of Broncos’s Country. Looking forward to a great year. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
Point was we are loaded at center, since we drafted two, and Hochstein like you say and Beadles can play the position too, so a good move to cut Frye for Hunter. I write here all the time, I will not always name everyone correctly all the time about everything, so thanks for the input. As for Orton being compared to Quinn, that’s childish, Qinn’s background in the NFL is a 3-9 starter record, and if I remember correctly when Orton got here he came in with a 21-13 record or something like that. My view of it is Quinn has shown me plenty over his three year career that whenever he was given a chance, and it was multiple times, he blew it, when Orton was given a shot he usually always came through, regardless of what team they were on that’s a big difference to me. I think it’s funny how many people are giving that much thought to a player who in all likelyhood will mean absolutely nothing to the Broncos’ season. But to each his own, here is hoping your boy Quinn won’t disappoint you, I personally could care less since I see Orton #1 and Tebow #2.
302/420, not to worry, most of the Orton naysayers have been falling in line of late, and welcome btw.
Correction, it was not the comparing Quinn to Orton that was childish, it was the way you chose to engage me.
Bones I got no bones with you, I don’t see why you should have some with me for stating my opinion, this is what this blog is for.
For anyone to dismiss the fact that quinn has played for a bad organization is foolish. Orton was benched in favor of Rex Grossman so tell me how great he is. He played on excellent teams that had a good defense and a good running game. A running game that was approx. 65% of there offense.
Having said that since you dismissed FTR and me we are stating that it is too early to say what happens with Quinn. I have been a fan for 32 years I hope Orton does well and he is off to a good start. Quinn is not my boy either.
I didn’t dismiss FTR nor you, in fact you entered this conversation a day late, we had a real grown up conversation and he says give Quinn some time, I say I’ve seen enough, not just in the game but throughout the off season, big deal, difference of opinion, but you obviously have a bone to pick with me, rest assured I won’t engage you any further, peace out.
