How the Broncos Will Watch the First Round

January 3rd, 2013 - 2:42pm by Sam Davis

As the Broncos rest their bodies this weekend and mentally prepare to play in the Divisional Round, most players will enjoy watching the NFL’s Wild Card games.

Four games will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Three of the four teams playing in the AFC could potentially be Denver’s opponent next Saturday, Jan. 12th.

Should Cincinnati defeat Houston on Saturday, the Broncos will host the Bengals in Denver for the Divisional Round. If Houston wins that game, Denver’s opponent will be the winner of the Baltimore-Indianapolis matchup.

“I’ll definitely check out the Bengals, and Indianapolis (versus) the Ravens,” linebacker Von Miller said. “I definitely have to check out those games. Those games are the more important games to pay attention to and to watch this week but I’ll be paying attention to all the games this week.”

Miller added that he will try to watch every game, and might join fellow edge-rusher Elvis Dumervil at his house to enjoy the games together. The NFC matchup that Miller particularly has his eyes on features a pair of rookie quarterbacks.

“I want to see that RGIII (Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III) versus the Seahawks,” Miller said. “Great quarterback, great season, great offense versus a great defense.”

Safety David Bruton is most interested in seeing the third rookie quarterback that will play this weekend, as the Colts’ Andrew Luck will take on the Ravens.

“(I’ll be) watching Andrew Luck perform, because I hear nothing but great things from family and friends who live out that way,” Bruton said. “I’m excited to watch that game, but we still have to study film, we have to study film on three teams, so I’ll be in the iPad.”

Linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who was named the team’s Darrent Williams Good Guy Award recipient on Thursday, wasn’t sure who would be joining him as he watches this weekend’s slate of games, but he knew where he would be watching them.

“I have a man cave,” Woodyard laughed. “My house is always open (for teammates to join), but I’ll be locked down there in the basement playing the game and watching film.”

Although they will be watching football more as students than as fans this weekend, they will be sure to soak in a relaxing and stress-free weekend.

“I’m just looking forward to sitting down, relaxing, and not really having that fast-paced, bullets-flying mentality that you would (have) in a game,” Miller said.

Hey RH – that’s for you…You need to go watch with WW in his mancave…as a student of the game…LOL (now, wouldn’t that be fun!!!)

I was stuck in traffic earlier, and caught a little sports radio. The host I heard was definitely not on the Broncos wagon before the season, and even for most of the season didn’t buy in. He of course has changed his tune. He is now picking Denver to beat NE, citing our defense and home field advantage. He GUSHED over Von Miller, and one comment caught my ear:

“We are going to go into the playoffs talking about Peyton Manning, and we will come out of them talking about Von Miller.”

The league has clearly taken notice, and we better lock this kid up long term soon, before his contract expires. If he becomes a free agent, and the market set the price, it will be MUCH more expensive IMO. Get it done!

  3. RH709 says:

I am all over that DB. Now if only I didn’t have three little kids and live in CA.
You are right though, I will be studying up the best I can as well.

I am still betting that the Bengals win and come to Denver.

  4. RH709 says:

OT, Miller is a superstar and everyone knows it at this point (at least in the league). He will most likely command a huge payday/restructure very soon. The kid has proven himself and he is such a talent that Denver will pay him and will keep him. Very few players can dictate a game like he can.

  5. OTbroncos says:

He is truly amazing, and I think we’ve only seen the beginning when it comes to Von Miller. It’s easy to take it for granted, but we are EXTREMELY lucky to have such a young and talented impact player on our defense. To hear this radio host, who is knowledgeable but also very critical, go on and on and dish out compliment after compliment was awesome!

  6. OTbroncos says:

Reid in KC and Lovie in SD is not good.. I was hoping they both would have gone either the college or coordinator route…

  7. RH709 says:

I agree, it isn’t good. Hopefully they don’t get smart and get good GM’s too.

Twitter tweet I do repeat I luv my Denver broncos! !! FROM YOUR BIGGEST FAN ON THE EAST COAST! !!will be cheering u on boyz!!

  9. OTbroncos says:

Even with Reid, KC needs a QB. Their roster does have talent, but you need a quality QB in this league. I’m personally not that high on Alex Smith, and Mike Vick is breaking down. Wonder what Reid will do, if he takes the job. SD is closer IMO, and if they get a coach like Lovie, and fix the defense, they could turn things around pretty quick..

I wonder if Elway knew this was a going to be a weak QB class, factoring that’s to his decision to draft Osweiler. I hear next years QB class might even be weaker..

  10. RH709 says:

I think he just got Oz so that he had a QB to sit behind Manning and learn. Getting a guy outside of the first round gives you the ability to sit that guy without any pressure. I wish we had gotten to see Oz attempt a few more passes since we were up 38-3 but Fox always plays the safe game. Oh well, we will have to wait till next preseason to postulate on such things.

With the weakness of this draft class, I would jump all over Smith if I was KC. Alex Smith has been great the past two years. The greatest thing about him is not forcing something that isn’t there. Throw it away and live to fight another play.

  11. alaskanbronco06 says:

If I was KC as bad as this may sound I would go after A Smith and take G Smith 1st overall or trade down to a later pick a take him. Get a guy who can help your team and a guy for the future if A Smith doesnt pan out.

  12. OTbroncos says:

Either way, I’m glad we took Osweiler. Thankfully he didn’t go back for his senior season. No doubt if a 6’7″, 242 pound kid with big arm was on the board, he’d go 1st round..

I’m not saying Alex Smith is bad, I just think he’s not that great. SF is a very well coached team, with a superior run game and tremendous defense. He can play well enough not to lose, but I don’t think he can will his team to victory.

  13. alaskanbronco06 says:

I would kinda do what Seattle did this past year. Sign QB and draft one. Only difference is Seattle drafted theirs in the 3rd and if they take Geno (Or any QB) it would be somewhere in the early 1st.

  14. OTbroncos says:

I agree AB, I would do both as well. The QB position is just that important. Alex Smith would probably be at the top of my FA list. Horrible year if you need a QB… Did you hear the next years QB draft class might even be worse?

  15. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yes OT. I mean Redskins drafted two last year. QB has always been important and it is really showing now.

  16. alaskanbronco06 says:

Oh and to answer what you asked. Yes I heard that. I believe a not so strong class till the supposed 2015

  17. OTbroncos says:

Yep. All the experts thought Shanny was crazy, but it already paid off when RGIII got hurt, and it may have just saved their playoff spot. You can never have enough talent at QB, or perceived talent for trades (Cassel, Kolb, or Fylnn).

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

Agreed OT. With the need for QBs I can see multiple teams reaching on a QB in the 1st.

I won’t be “watching” any games this weekend – I’m going in for cataract surgery tomorrow on my only good eye … but the games will be on, and I’ll be paying attention … don’t know who I’d want the Broncos to play … kind of doesn’t matter … they’ll be up for any of the three … and at home … that’s the beauty of the last 3 weeks …. Broncos went from fearing to play in New England, to hosting everything until the Super Bowl … proves again – you just never know … GO BRONCOS!!!

  20. oldsouthstander says:

Wieman: Had catartact surgery on both eyes (a few weeks apart). You’ll be absolutely thrilled with the difference. I’m 71 and don’t need to wear glasses to pass the driving eye exam.

  21. sndvl says:

Just saw a pretty funny Joke-

Eli Manning, Jay Cutler & Philip Rivers walk into a bar… To watch the playoffs

  22. strandoftds82 says:

And Roethlisberger shows up there at half time. LOL

  23. socalbigbroncofan says:

    sndvl, thats great joke.
i am excited for football this weekend. cant wait to see who we play. i am confident in our team and that manning will push them in practice and make sure they are ready. i knew we would have a winning season and this is more than what i expected. i am just glad that i believed since the moment we signed manning. way to go Elway and company.

  24. sndvl says:

Gotta love you tube! Man I wish I still had that poster…

  25. DaddyBronc says:

You guys start talking about draftees before I can figure who is going to become a free agent….

    help me out…

It looks to me that between Manning and Elway…if we can retain our team…the draft is all just bonus…

Can McG and Champ play a few more seasons?

I figure Porter is gone…too bad…who are we losing? Does DJ make the cut?

  26. onehoop says:

I think we’ll franchise Clady and give Porter a low-ball offer with walking papers after his injury concerns. Chris Harris works as a #2 CB, but we need a strong nickelback to beat teams like New England.

Stokley’s been solid, but who knows. We’ll probably look to draft a slot receiver as well. Not like we’ll have cap room for Wes Welker or Mike Wallace!

  27. Bigbroncodog says:

Ok home fans, lets show up in a big way next Saturday! Do not sell your tickets to our opponents fans! This is not a wine and cheese party (bring your heavy boots and as many noise makers as you can hold)! BRING THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN THUNDER!!!
