Helton Visits Broncos Practice

June 13th, 2012 - 1:30pm by Stuart Zaas

UPDATE: Helton went on to hit a grand slam in the first inning of the Rockies’ game Wednesday night.

Last week it was Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki that came out to watch a Broncos practice.

Today his teammate, first baseman Todd Helton, stopped by Dove Valley to take in a Broncos minicamp session.

Helton is no stranger to the football field, as he was a starting quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers before he was injured and replaced by another quarterback who also attended Wednesday’s practice.

Peyton Manning took over for Helton as the Volunteers’ quarterback in 1994 and Helton never played another snap of football, concentrating his efforts on the baseball diamond instead.

Manning and Helton have remained close friends over the years and Manning has been a guest of Helton’s in the Rockies’ clubhouse and has taken in a few games at Coors Field this season.

Helton became the fifth Tennessee Volunteer on the practice field Wednesday, joining Manning, Britton Colquitt, Robert Ayers and Malik Jackson.

Colquitt took time during a break from special teams drills to talk to Helton, who he had never met before despite having a hometown connection of Knoxville, Tenn.

“Of course, I grew up watching him,” Colquitt said. “It was cool, I’ve always wanted to meet him and since I’ve been out here, I’ve been like, ‘I’ve got to meet that guy.’ He’s awesome and he’s a legend. It’s just cool to be in the same town as him since he’s from the same place that I’m from.”

Colquitt said he enjoys when other Denver professional athletes come out to watch a practice.

“It’s definitely cool to see the (Rockies) guys come out and sometimes the (Nuggets),” he said. “Sometimes you forget that you’re in professional sports, too. It’s definitely cool to see them.”

    DJ is a bum.

    DJ MUST GO!

    No matter the cost.

Other than some flashes of brilliance last year he has been an underachieving cancer for years.

  2. killerkod says:

    Morning Bay………..

The more I think about it……….the more I agree.

While we’re thin at the LB position, he’s still not worth all the hassel he’s been causing to our team. Not to mention he’s a lazy player who doesn’t always give 110%.

His head butt in the chargers game was a “real” flash of brilliance! LMAO or his perpetual bone-headedness is more like it! haha

  3. tlcat06 says:

He will not go this season. They will play him and trade him next season. That’s just the way it is. We need something as good as him in return and there isn’t anything this year. Trade him for a LB next yr or draft one… but we’re going to have to wait, IMO.

    Happy flag day people!

-Constantly missing non mandatory conditionning and practices every year to stay in beautiful South Florida.

    -No leadership abilities whatsoever.

    -Captaincy removed from him.

    -DUI

    -2nd DUI allegations

    -Steroids allegations.

    -Childish behavior with the playbook.

The wrtiting has been on the wall for two years now. Been reading it loud and clear all along. Now some others are catching on. Good thing. Thanks Woody, DJ must go!

  5. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, about the steroids allegations, just seeing how he seemed posessed on the field last year vs. the prior year I wouldn’t doubt it one bit, reminded me of Romanowski on drugs.

  6. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Good question kod but I seriously doubt he’d win the appeal.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

We couldn’t get anything for Orton either, but Bowlen swallowed the big bucks to move on. The team needs to move on from DJ, he is just a relic of the ugly past at this point, and with all his luggage we wouldn’t be able to get much in return for him at any given point, would have to strongly disagree with your assessment on this one cat, and neat to see you show so much love and interest in the Broncos.

  8. killerkod says:

Pretty bold statement for Woody to make…………I love how he calls it like he sees it. We need more of that in the media.

The writing is on the wall for DJ’s time in Denver………..just a matter of when JE will pull the trigger…..or the plug in this instance.

  9. killerkod says:

JE and Bowlen seem more committed now than ever to have the “right” players on our roster and are working on ridding themselves of the dark days of a few years ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just cut thier losses either……

  10. killerkod says:

I have a feeling that Moreno will also be gone before the season starts………..either cut or re-injured. lol

  11. baylinorcrush says:

And with all his luggage and the huge question marks on him right now with the DUI and steroids alleagations pending, what team on their right mind would think that this is all worth it? Having to worry about a player who may or may not be able to play a good chunk of the year, sheeh, what a waste of anybody’s time….

  12. killerkod says:

    bay…………..the faders? LMAO

  13. baylinorcrush says:

With Moreno and DJ gone it would be like a new dawn sort of thing, finally removing the ghosts past.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

    LOL @ killer

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Too bad their master of darkness is no longer there, a huge loss for us and the rest of the AFC.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Hey, they got rid of McBean, so I have hope for DJ and Moreno gone yet, LOL.

  17. killerkod says:

Yup………we’re gonna miss his mind-boggling personel decisions for sure. Hopefully the ghost of Al Davis will haunt them for the rest of their existance! LMAO

  18. killerkod says:

Only thing that might save Moreno is that he’s not costing the Broncos much this year so IF and I mean a massive capital IF he can be productive, they’ll more than likely keep him around. But I would not shed a tear one bit to read he’s been cut. I’d much rather give another guy the opportunity.

  19. tlcat06 says:

Bay… that’s why I said not until next season because I’m sure they read him the riot act. But if he wins his appeal things might be a bit different. Qnbesides. He is not the only one currently under legal trouble.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Those three players have equally disappointed and hurt the team, even so in different areas. DJ, lack of motivation and commitment coupled with attitude and character issues taking away from his play, Moreno health and uncontrolable enthusiasm which causes him to dance at the most inoportune times, McBean dumbest penalty abuser ever.

  21. killerkod says:

LOL……….I can still picture Moreno celebrating a late game TD like he just won the SB when we were getting pummeled. I was like, what are you thinking man??!?! hahaha He would be a great threat on dancing with the stars though!

  22. baylinorcrush says:

That’s the thing those three have in common:

    They don’t think!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

I would think that a pre-requisite to be a Bronco long term would be the ability to think, at least I would hope so….

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, good chatting with you, GO BRONCOS!

  25. killerkod says:

I’m really hoping McGahee can carry the load this season and stay healthy. I absolutely love the way he runs. Compliment that with Hillman as a change of pace and we got ourselves a great backfield duo.

  26. killerkod says:

you too bay…………nice to see multiple posts from you at one time! lol Catch up with you soon bro.

  27. killerkod says:

and good morning to you cat…………you left me hanging yesterday! LMAO Don’t worry, I survived………but the blog was on life support the entire day! haha

  28. Royalbroncofan1 says:

The way it’s looking cat, DJ wouldn’t be available for a possible 10 games, so the Team will need to move forward without him. Wesley W. and rookie Danny T. will need to step in… (Wildcat connection).

  29. strandOFTDS says:

So if the Broncos go and cut DJ, it`ll count 5 million against the cap this year? What a headache! Either DJ gets cut, or he should just re-negotiate his contract for a smaller loss and the Broncos have more room in the cap. Not the best idea, but to lose 5 million in the cap is bad in itself.

  30. Royalbroncofan1 says:

That’s the only viable way I seen him staying the season strand, re-negotiating his contract as he wouldn’t be avalaible for possible 10 games. Good point!

  31. DaddyBronc says:

spunnduckywuwu – another appearance by Glax? Seems like!

  32. sndvl says:

Im glad baylin mentioned missing the non mandatory workouts.

During our superbowl years… There was 100% participation. The entire squad committed to one goal. So what are DJs committments? That’s the 5 million dollar question.

As for not getting anything for him in trade? Get creative. Like a 2014 conditional pick! Start at a 5th. Based on his production the next 2 seasons a possible 2nd or 3rd??? Seems like it could be done. At least worth trying…

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!
