Haynes Signed; Torain to IR

November 10th, 2008 - 4:10pm by Adam Zinser

Head Coach Mike Shanahan has announced that the Broncos have signed running back Alex Haynes and placed Ryan Torain on injured reserve.

Torain marks the third Denver running back moved to IR after he suffered a left knee injury in the Broncos’ win at Cleveland last Thursday. He was having success against the Browns, rushing for 68 yards and his first career touchdown on just 12 carries.

Then on a carry in the second quarter, Torain was tackled and another defender rolled up awkwardly on Torain’s knee. Trainers worked on him on the bench and he jogged up and down the sidelines, but he eventually headed to the locker room and did not return.

The 5-foot-10, 230-pound Haynes is in just his second year in the NFL, and he began 2008 with the Ravens, who waived him on August 30.

He originally joined the Ravens in 2005 as a college free agent out of the University of Central Florida, and since then he has spent time with both the Ravens and Panthers.

He has appeared in nine games for his career, all last year with Carolina. He ran the ball three times for three yards in those games while also catching three passes for 14 yards. He also posted three special teams tackles.

Haynes finished his collegiate career at Central Florida as its all-time leading rusher, posting 3,356 yards on 742 carries. His 27 career rushing scores ranked second in UCF history.

Hopefully he isn’t scared he’ll get hurt on our team. 3 RBs on the IR, that is very scary. Maybe Shanny can make a 1000 yd. rusher out of him.

  2. dwillwilliams27 says:

We need to go out and resign Quentin Griffin # 22, he was a good runner just fumbled to much. he knows the system and he doesnt have a team. Come on Shanny sign Q….

  3. luigi303 says:

What About PJ Pope Will He Get Some Carries Since He Got Moved To The Active Roster From The Practice Squad?

  4. AsianOrange says:

I say bring in Mike Bell, what was wrong with him?!

  5. champ2203 says:

why not mike anderson. he knows the system already and he’s well rested. lets go get him.

  6. BroncoXXX#24 says:

    get L.T

  7. j dub says:

    L.T ain’t all that anymore!

  8. jazzyfrizzle says:

anderson cant play, he is suspended for the year.

  9. columbusOHbronco says:

i like the mike anderson and maybe mike bell idea but Q, come on dwilliams27. what are you a relative of his, the kid is 5 foot nothing and wieghs nothing. we need a work horse not a 3rd down back if we had 3 other rb on the roster than ya but we dont have one guy that is healthy. we need someone who can carry it 20 times a game until selvin gets healthy. who is this kid from central florida has good size and great college numbers but never heard of him. if i were the broncos i would start thinking of ways to move up the draft and sign my boy beanie wells from the ohio state university. now he would be a beast for us for years, there isnt a more phisical back in college then beanie. go broncos and go bucks

  10. samoanbronco says:

Oh brother we are in trouble. lol Griffin??? We might as well sign Peter Griffin hahahaha Mike Bell was a hard runner which is what we are after and knows the scheme.. why bring in a newbie?

Not sure if Bell signed up for another team.. Tatum Bell maybe or will all the underwear going missing in dove valley lol

  11. pdp1408 says:

You never know because Shannahan has turned no name backs into 1,000 yard rushers before, why not Haynes?

  12. bronc fan in WA says:

    not impressed with this transaction….

i feel there are much better options out there. once again ive been dissapointed about our recruiting…..

calvin lowry, now this…… come on

  13. TruBroncFan07 says:

Should have signed Davenport for Pitt. He is a real big back who could team up well with Selvin when he gets healthy. We will see this guy can do.

  14. shoe4x says:

Where is Anthony Aldridge? He was a stud RB in the preseason. I know he was injured in the final game against Arizona. Does anyone know if he is health yet?

  15. denbroncos47 says:

I agree right when Davenport was released i was like we should go and get him because he was such a good reliable back last year. But what do we do we do something stupid like we always do we always pass up a good option for some no name. Hopefully this guy is a great running back because we are running out of options at running back.

  16. Torain ATV fan says:

instead of asking or saying who we should get. we should say who we think we are going to pick up. nobody would have gotten this one.

  17. oldsouthstander says:

Aldrige was put on IR during pre-season so he’s not an option. It’s going to be an intersting final 7 games with the RB position so unstable. Maybe we’ll see some Hillis/Larsen in short yardage situations. For those yelling for Larsen to get some reps at LB, have you forgot that Larsen is our number 2 FB?

  18. broncosrule20 says:

i say we should let Hillis be the ball carrier. He has really stepped up in the past couple games and is a versatile athlete. Besides Hillis played almost every back position at Arkansas. Larsen moves in as the primary fullback and then we can use Pope and Haynes as the running backs behind Hillis

  19. West Coast says:

oldsouthstander….Everyone is yelling for Larsen at linebacker because that is his natural position. Also maybe because our defense gives up 400 yards a game? This defense would be much much better with a decent middle linebacker which we have yet to see.

  20. 07elway says:

This is HORRIBLE news but we’re going to have to deal with this. Just when he was given his first major chance to do some great things the ATV got run over. When will the madness end?? I’m not sure about Haynes as his replacement I do think Davenport would have been better but there is ALWAYS a method to Shanahan’s madness. He’s got a reason for all that he does so he must know something we don’t. I just hope this guy can help us out – he deserves a chance so give him a chance. He hasn’t done anything on OUR team yet so we can’t say if he fits in or not. I would say after about 2 or 3 games we should be able to tell if he works in with our offense or if we need to find someone else. I hope that’s not the case… I hope he can fit in with our offense we need to fill the holes so I hope this works out for us.

Keep believing in this team… this win is going to give us the momentum we need to keep on this track. Cutler & Co. will take us to where we need and want to be.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  21. bullridinmike27 says:

did everyone forget about ron dayne, you know that one guy that maybe ran for a 50 sum odd run against the cowboys to pretty much win the game. i have faith in mike but i really thought that ron dayne would have been a good player to get.

  22. wormyblackburny says:

Wow. I am at a loss for words here. Welcome to the NFL Hillis. Can you play linebacker too?

  23. wormyblackburny says:

I was really concerned until I read that “He ran the ball three times for three yards with Carolina”……this guy is a STUD!

  24. chuntbuck says:

yeah i wouldnt mind seeing larsen play a game at MLB, from what i have heard he is the kind of guy that plays hard and stops the run. while i dont know anything about this haynes guy, we still have selvin young.

  25. dwillwilliams27 says:

Quentin Griffin is a good runner and no im not related to him, ok if the Q isnt a good idea, why not bring in Ron Dayne remember his last november game on thanksgiving. He is a free agent and a good RB.

  26. Nachojuice says:

Really people … stop talking about RB’s that were already here and let go … they are not here for a reason! Someone fresh and new is exactly what this team needs and hopefully he can stay healthy. The zone running system is designed to take no name backs and make them look great so give this kid a chance and we’ll see what he can do.

  27. denver270 says:

DOES IT REALLY MATTER OUR DEFENSE SUCKS THE BIG ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. delux304 says:

    RON DAYNE

  29. broncomike83 says:

West Coast couldnt say it any better, are D is horrible. Niko K had his big chance to fill the shoes of D. Will and N. Web and he blew it, He looked like he was still in YAFL trying to tackle the ball not the person. WRAP UP AND DRIVE>
    With our D hurt,
At least we can out throw better any offense out there now we just need some RB help. Pj Pope, Alex Haynes might be he answer until Youngs back.
Go Broncos, crush the dirty bird again just like 98

    Cutlers a BEAST!!!!!

  30. millsdesign says:

    Once again 07Elway… Well said…..
Give this guy a chance. Shanny has surprised us and the NFL many times before with “no name to big name” running backs. Positive attitude and support from the TRUE Bronco country is what these guys need. Let’s give them all the support they deserve… let’s show them the passion we have for DENVER BRONCOS football. Unlike the charger fans BOOING “their team” in the first quarter of sundays game. Pathetic in my opinion.

    GO BRONCOS! WE HAVE FAITH.

    GET WELL SOON “TRAIN”…..

  31. WGBronco says:

Tatum bel is suspended aldridge is on IR with our team and anderson is suspeneded and Mike bell is pisse doff he was converted to a full back and hasn’t produced since. Tried out for the texans and even Kubiak cut him. I say giv eth ball to hillis and let him pound it.

    GO BRONCOS AND EDDIE ROYAL!!!

  32. gdingel says:

Wow!! What a move instead of going out and getting a proven veteran, who’s averaging 4.3 yards carry(Najeh Davenport). We sign a no name averaging 1 yard a carry. Also only has had 3 carries in his NFL career. This is a great move I hope Selvin Young is better soon so he can get most of the carries.

  33. dwillwilliams27 says:

Never should of traded Clinton Portis, im getting sick of seeing a new RB every year , look at all the teams that have franchise RB’s, Vikings= AP , Charger’s= LT, 49ers= Gore and Colts = Addai,

we need to draft a top running back in this years draft and ride him for years. NO MORE LOOKING FOR RUNNING BACKS IN DENVER

    # 1 Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells, Ohio State
    # 2 Knowshown Moreno, Georgia

  34. dwillwilliams27 says:

Where is Chad Jackson ? Is he going to help our offense be better then they already are ?

  35. uhbroncofan says:

well….here’s what i hope happens. i hope that tampa bay cuts cadillac williams and sticks with graham. this way we can go after cadillac

  36. tdforeal says:

I don’t understand the Chad Jackson pickup..we are in desperate need of DBs, LBs, RBs and we get a WR when we have 3 amazing WR already and then we don’t even play the guy..uh wtf. The Clinton Portis trade was good. I loved the guy, great player, but off the field he is a clown so i’m glad they traded him for Champ who can basically close off the opponents number #1 wideout. I’m glad they’re signing a nobody at RB, why pay big money for a new RB when u have several great calibre running backs who you expect to stay in your franchise on IR? Get through the season with these guys and start fresh next year with Torain as starting HB.

I wish Denver could have picked up Law..imagine Bailey on one side, Law on the other, with Bly in for nickel situations.

  37. Gami3it says:

Doubt thats gonna happen uhbroncofan. I am very unimpressed with this. We have enough running backs out there who are familiar with us. I was personally looking forward to Tatum Bell. He was our last unbelievably successful back in like 05….and that’s saying a lot since he wasn’t starting.

I was said about all the IR crap but I have been giddy since Thursday to see who we would sign and I am just….just not impressed. Hopefully he does well. I am a broncos fan and He is now a bronco so I will be rooting for him…GO BRONCOS!!!

  38. Someoneshero34 says:

Why didn’t we sign Najeh Davenport? or this Free Agent Rookie, who was cut before the year by Atlanta, who i know has some Talent named Jamar Brittingham from Bloomsburg University, he’s quite an RB, or even TONY HUNT?!

  39. Someoneshero34 says:

  40. b4life says:

I dont understand this pick up. Mike Bell or even Tatum Bell knew the scheme they knew their blocks this is really weird move on Denver’s part. PJ Pope is probably going to be the starter because he has been in the offense longer than Haynes. Denver can’t spend a first round draft pick on offense they need to draft a really good MLB and a good safety since they seem keen to not playing Josh Barrett and let him get some expirence. While they are at it get a good DT in free agency then draft or trade for a DE. There are just too many holes in this defense and going offense number one is not going to help Denver out. Not trying to be negative but Ryan Torain seems to be a bit injury prone. Hopefully its just been bad luck so far.

  41. gasperdn says:

Mike Anderson is suspended????? Where in the hell did you hear that?????? Also I say give Haynes a chance… Who knew who T.D. was when he was drafted?????

  42. Someoneshero34 says:

In addition i hope the broncos draft Anthony Scirrotto from PSU for the hole @ safety.

  43. baileythebronco says:

you guys see foxworth is atlantas number one and wears number 24 im proud of him big mistake on our part

  44. baileythebronco says:

id rather have moore from missourri at safety too. WOODYARD is gonna be good i wanna see him stay starting

    Are you really champ bailey?

If so, nice to here the good news! Do think Selvin will be healthy by the end of the season?

If not, why did you say that? Are you looking for attention?

  46. baileythebronco says:

law couldnt start over bly get real

  47. baileythebronco says:

i doubt its champ but thats be cool i agree.

  48. tjboy2011 says:

look out for boyd he was a liget player in the SEC

  49. bigvon says:

No thats not Champ!! Champ would have more to say or would have done a blog for us. any way…….

First off – We definately could have done better for a free agent running back. Davenport would have been great I agree with all of you, but it was probably due to character issues or something, or maybe just maybe we still are working on something with him. Six backs came in and worked out and they like Hayes the best so maybe there is something there. We wont know till we get him on the field. Shanny might have wanted someone that is fresh and not beat down. THe fact is that like the rest of you I too felt like that was who we were going after. Bell and Bell Dayne Anderson none of them will work just like one of you said earlier we dont wont to bring back people that we cut or let go and they couldnt keep a spot with a different organization.

What we REALLY REALLY NEED is two things in this order.

#1 – A new defensive coordinator that is proven, someone with avery successful background and a great resume. We need someone PROVEN. I beleive we have the personnel but we need a PROVEN coach that has a proven and tested program. SHanny is an offensive mind we need a hard nose defensive guy that was proven results, look how the Falcons have turned there defense around. They have a defensive head coach that came in and is making it happen, I am just saying get a real desensive coordinator.

#2 – Its time to sell out and get a real running back, not a commitee, not an injury prone rookie that we have to roll the dice and hope we dont crap out on. Torain is cool dont get me wrong I think he still needs a shot but we cant take the chance of this happening again. We need to draft a legitimate workhorse.

    Beanie Wells – perfect
    Javon Ringer – perfect
Knoshown Moreno – Human Highlight film – best choice and we love SEC RBs ie TD.
THere are others but you get the picture. If you get Moreno you have a an all round threat. especially in our system.

Alridge will be back but he will be a change of pace back and a playmaker, he should definately make the team next year we desperately need him and his speed. So if we dont do it in the draft we need to do it in free agency and some great choices will be:

    Derek Ward – Giants
    Ladell Betts – Redskins
Chestor Taylor – would be great in our system
Raiders might release Bush or Fargas, either could excell with us.

One of these guys especial Ward or Taylor could be great for us. look at how good Matt Ryan a rookie is, because he team has a solid ground game.they brought in Turner and now you see a complete turn around.
