For those of you wondering about the backup quarterback situation, Head Coach Mike Shanahan just announced that Darrell Hackney has been signed from the practice squad to the active roster. He will now be the backup to Jay Cutler.
Shanahan also announced that the team waived tackle Matt Murphy, whom they signed Monday.
The 6-foot-0, 248-pound Hackney has been on the team’s practice squad for the first eight weeks of the season. In 2007, he spent the final eight weeks on the active roster, but he has yet to see action in a regular season NFL contest.
In four games this preseason, including starting the final preseason contest at Arizona, Hackney completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards and one touchdown to no interceptions.

I honestly don’t know what to say to this other than I hope if something happens to Cutler (which would be a total disaster to our offense and I pray nothing happens to him) Hackney will be a better fill-in than Ramsey has been. I really haven’t seen much of Hackney to say that I think he would be good or not. Hopefully we won’t have to find out.
GO BRONCOS!!!
im a darrel fan
I’m happy for him and for the Broncos! Hackney has a lot of talent and is a beast of a QB at 248lbs. Rocket arm and tough to bring down. Sure , he may make a mistake or two but he plays with attitude and can run the ball like a fullback if the need arises. I thought he made good decisions in pre-season play for the most part and most importantly , moved the balll down the field. I’m not a fan of over the hill back up QB’s that aren’t mobile, are slow to react and throw just as many picks from not starting as a rookie might(i.e. Brad Johnson in Dallas). Hackney is no sitting duck when he is under center , glad he’s there if Jay goes down.
yes i wanted him to be the back up after pre season he looks good hes a big guy we need a package for him. i know it probably wont happen but when we were doing trick plays we were winning. put hacney in at wideout eddie royal at halback hand off to eddie sleep right reverse to hacney then throw it to jay cutler. denver has the ability to do some wildcat offense too. Out trick the trickster with better trickery!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t understand the moves we’re making? We’re sign Murphy, then cut him! Why would you sign a 268lb OL? It’s stupid!
Then you put in Paymeh to replace Bailey? Again, what are you thinking? Maybe magically Paymeh becomes the reincarnation of Bailey? Seriously?
Hackney’s destined to become a career PS QB. Dude’s a hard throwing midget QB that will never have an NFL playing career. He’d be better off leaving Denver and signing on with some HS as a coach, and work his way up.
Pat Bowlen’s watching this happen. If I owned this “Billion Dollar” Bronco business, and was charging fans the prices you are for seats, licensing, TV-Cable revenues, memorabilia, etc., but was putting this quality of product on the field, most people would expect to be run out of town. Wake up Pat! We bleed Orange and Blue, but you cant continue to turn a blind eye, yet escape the rath of the fans, press, and public as you’ve done. Keep fostering/condoning this calamity and I’ll promise your billion dollar baby’ s gonna go south, and you’ll quickly become a public enemy #1. So far, people blame Shanahan because he’s the easiest target to hit. Shanahan does nothing without you’re approval. We’re not stupid, we’re loyal, but it only goes so far! Wake up Mr Bronco…clocks ticking! Lose this game to Miami and the feeding frenzy will officially begin.
I hate like hel!!! to say this, I do not see how the Broncos can win this game, I know that I will be called a hater!
but we have so key people out on defence and we was losing with them I do not see how then we win without them,
the way that Miami has been playing and the way the Broncos have been playing well that is the reason that I think we will lose this one by 10 plus points,
now it is out there hate me if you want but this is how I fill, but nothing would please me more than for me to be wrong.
Hey guys, the Packers just released DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Maybe we can get him in a Broncos uniform by tomorrow.
I think we should pick Kabeer, but I thought when we signed Simion Rice last year that, that was a good move and that backfired. The broncos should be carefull.
If the offense shows up and doesn’t turn the ball over we win easy tomorrow. Miami is not that good of a team! Hackney could a great backup,he did an excellent job in preseason moving the ball down field. He is the backup, not the starter and Cutler is strong as a moose. No more ancient D-lineman please, that has got this team no where. I’ll be happy if w make the playoffs this year but next year will be different. It takes time and luck to build a champion and this team is headed in the right direction. Go Broncos!
PLease please Broncos i think u should think about signing the DE that was released from The Packers! he gives good stability and experience! and our defense is desprite!
Please pick up KGB!!!!!!
Im thinking exactly what a couple of you are thinking……
sign Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila!!!!!
This is a chance to get a good play maker to stop the run and my gosh do we need that right now!
For God’s sake fireeee Shanahan, 6-10 are predicted in this year full of frustration and frustration and mediocrity
I thought we should look at signing KGB. BUT. . . he isnt getting any younger and he has been having a problem healing from a knee injury. He might not even be able to pass a physical.
i dont think KGB is the answer,,not a longer term one atleast,,he barely registered a sack this season gettin pushed around at 6’4 255 wt. range…maybe its jst because he hasnt been healthy…i dont know…he would make a gud 3-4 OLB..
but wud i do knw is that this SUnday is a BIG game….i’ve a feelin the team will pull through….the absence of star players and constant bashing of mediocre players will force them to step up!!eventually..
I am with you guys about signing Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. I think a change of scenery can maybe regenerate his hunger. Can anybody tell me what happened to the idea of Moss playing at OLB? The last I read he hasn’t even practiced at the position. I hate to be too critical about our D, but OMG. Hopefully, with a lot of the starters out maybe the D will be desperate and play a bit reckless. My coach always told us to go out there and find somebody to hit and make them pay for being anywhere near the ball (Punish em all day!!!). That will definitely create some havoc and of course some turnovers. Let’s see Webster and the K-man in the middle together in the 3-4 with DJ and Moss on the outside. I think that’ll be a run stopper and a punishing lineup. I really think we are going to win this one big. The O is back and I’ll definitely be watching.
KGB would be an excellent fit for the Broncos and YES if something happens to Cutler, Hackney would be so much better than Ramsey. Even in the preseason, Patrick was a step behind and it was an embarrassment having him in there against the Pats. I guess the Redskins and Jets in his day didn’t have complex offenses to learn because in our system Ramsey looks like a complete moron. Oh well, let’s improve to 5-3.
Ok folks…reality check!!!!!! We didnt even sign a player when Champ/Boss/our RB’s went down. There’s absolutely “0″ chance Shanny moves on this…the thoughts of Simeon still dance around his head like BB’s in a salad bowl. Aint happening!
OK i kno that this statement is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.. BUt stop everything ur doin and go sign Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was the all time sack leader for the packers in just nine years! Just think of wuh damage he could do on or sorry excuse for a defense. Go get him NOW i dnt care how much it costs! ill throw in a couple dollars if i have to! we look like a disgrace this year on defense! Him opposite of elvis dumervil. Would be one great defensive end tandum. People say the broncos never go to the f-a to pick up big name players. Well heres ur chance to prove someone wrong! The guy has already proven himself! now go get him!! P.S. Im goin to continue to reitterate this idea until Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila is officially off the market!! Until that point… U’ll be hearin alot more about this!!! Mwuhahhhhahahaahahahahh Have a good one
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila is on the down side of his carreer. He was ineffective against the run, and could not muster a pass rush anymore. That’s why the Packers released him.
KGB is an old has-been, you people are losing your minds. Have faith you band wagon fans, this team can play. And I like Hackney, that dudes a balla
Forget about KGB. Does anyone really think the Packers would cut him loose if he was good anymore? Time to think new head coach that can re-build this team, especially on defense! PLEEESE WAKE UP PAT B!!!!!!!!!
Sign KGB. What a fantastic idea!!! Why not sign a has been DE who’s sucked ther last two seasons and was good only at defending the pass? Oh, wait, we tried that last year with Sam Adams and Simeon Rice. The only defensive player I’d want Shanny to take a desperation flier at is a Defensive tackle. We have good DE’s, but our tackles don’t dominate a thing and this is essential to a working 3-4 defensive scheme.
The Titans are currently undefated. Remember how bad they were a few years ago? What did Fischer do? Same thing that Shanny is doing right now, draft a very taleted group of players, supplement thse players with a minnimum of free agents and give them a few years to develope. This years sdhould be looked at as though it were a 20 game preseason to 2009.
Im really thinking that they shouldnt sign him. I think the talent is already there on the broncos D but something needs to change behind the scenes to get them performing at the level they are capable of performing.
What we should do is trade Jay Culter while you can get something for him, I have been watching him and he does and will always turn the ball over,
that defense just need a little help and they are there, when you have the weapons on offense that the Broncos have you should score 30 plus a game, Trade Jay get help on D AND YOU WILL SEE.
Change “Chabelo” Cutler, the same Brian Griese’s history
