Goodell Talks State of the League

February 3rd, 2012 - 4:49pm by Stuart Zaas

INDIANAPOLIS – At the NFL’s annual press conference, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that NFL Network will televise five additional regular-season games next season as part of its Thursday Night Football package.

The network will carry Thursday night games in Weeks 2-11 and 13-15. NBC will carry the season-opening game in Week 1 on Thursday night and the Thanksgiving day primetime contest in Week 12.

“Adding these games to the NFL Network schedule will give more players, teams, and cities the primetime stage,” Commissioner Goodell said. “Our fans can now get an early start on the NFL weekend in the season’s first 15 weeks.”

As part of the Thursday Night Football schedule expansion, all 32 teams are guaranteed a primetime game next season.

GLOBAL GROWTH

Earlier this year, it was announced that the St. Louis Rams would host games in the United Kingdom for three consecutive seasons as part of the NFL’s International Series. The Rams are the first NFL team to commit to playing games abroad on a regular basis.

On Friday, Goodell announced that the popular channel NFL RedZone will be available in Spanish beginning next season. NFL RedZone is produced by NFL Network and shows viewers live look-ins to the various games in action on NFL Sundays.

The commissioner talked about making international growth a priority and opened up the possibility of playing games in Mexico and Europe in the future.

“There is a great deal of interest in Latin America to play a game,” Goodell said. “We would like to get back to Mexico with another regular season game. We’ve discussed it with our partners in Mexico and it is something we would like to get done sooner rather than later.”

Goodell said that the league wouldn’t expand its International Series without careful consideration and planning.

“This is all about a collective strategy to make our game more successful on a global basis, and the effort that we are putting in with the U.K., and London as an example, are all designed to build a model that is going to grow our game and its popularity in the U.K. If that’s successful, we will expand throughout Europe. The same thing is true in Mexico, and what we can do in Latin America if we’re successful there.”

SUPER FUTURE

Although the weather has been unseasonably warm in Indianapolis this week — and was unseasonably cold in Dallas last year — the 2014 Super Bowl that will be played in the New York/New Jersey area has given other cold-weather cities like Denver hope of hosting the event in the future.

“We are a city worthy of hosting the Super Bowl,” Broncos president Joe Ellis told the Denver Post this week. “It’s definitely something we’re looking at.”

Goodell said that while he is all for playing the game in all sorts of weather elements, the league will look at the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl to determine its plans going forward.

“I’m a big believer that the game of football is played in all elements,” Goodell said. “We see it, and some our classic games were played in snow or ice or cold. … We do have another side, which is they believe that when you get to the Super Bowl, it should be played in conditions that are not impacted by weather. That’s a balancing act. We’re going to play an outdoor game in new York, in 2014 for the Super Bowl. … Let’s see how that event comes off. We think it’s going to be very positive and let’s go from there.”

The Broncos front office will be watching that event closely, hoping it will open the door for cities such as Denver to enter the Super Bowl hosting rotation.

“Who wouldn’t want the Super Bowl?” Ellis said to the Denver Post. “I think it would be great for Denver, and our city deserves an event like that.”

Oh and thanks to the Broncos for giving me the largest season ticket percentage decrease of any section. What a pleasant surprise!

This article from the DP was posted on the previous thread:

“Broncos’ John Elway Hires New Salary Cap Guru Mike Sullivan”

However, the final paragraph was not included, which I found to be quite interesting. It’s below for those of you who may not read the DP yourselves and happen to be interest in the QB situation and FA.

    *************************

“The Broncos are expected to be active in the free-agent market next month. A possible list of NFL free-agent quarterbacks who the Broncos might consider signing to back up Tim Tebow: Chris Redman, Shaun Hill, Chad Henne, Vince Young, David Carr, Kevin O’Connell and Josh Johnson. Elway has stated Tebow would be the team’s starting quarterback entering 2012 training camp.

    *************************

A “possible” list…..to “back up” Tim Tebow. Makes one wonder if this possible list of back up QB’s is merely speculation by Klis, or if there’s something more substantial to it. We’ll see.

  9. sndvl says:

I still think our best “back up” option is already in Denver. I highly doubt Brady Quinn will have a chance to start with any other team at this point. And I can’t imagine he would want to start all over as a backup for another team.
Unless Elway thinks he’s not capable.

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

Too bad there can’t be a tie. Don’t like the Giants. Never gave really (I suppose as a 2nd grader, watching them destroy my favorite team in the big game in 86 has something to do with that.
But I really can’t stand the Pats. More so with hoodie jr, and all their cheating ways. Ugh.
With that said, I’m an AFC guy. All the way. (except our rivals in the bay area. Id NEVER root for them. For anything. I don’t even root for them to lose.) LOL

  12. Tide Bronco says:

sndvl, I actually like Quinn too, and he’s said he wants to stay in Denver, but no doubt he’d like to get some playing time somewhere. Honestly, I feel bad for him. He’s such a good kid, by all accounts, works hard, and I’d like to see him advance his career, whether in Denver or elsewhere. He would certainly be an inexpensive option for a back up, if the organization has faith enough in him to keep him. Going to be interesting to watch this all play out.

  13. Tide Bronco says:

Yeah, Turtle. Loved the poem, Dude. Excellent.

  14. sndvl says:

Yeah Tide, he has been completely professional during his career. Even in his two seasons here in Denver.
If Tebow were to go down with an injury, at least Quinn is familiar with the playbook, players and scheme. He is a former 1st rounder. High character type of guy. ND pedigree.
What’s not to like. Sign him to a 3-4 year deal.

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I guess im the only guy who enjoys the expansion of the NFL in the states and out. I believe the world deserves to see more of the greatest sport ever. Some say it will water down the talent, lets not forget alot of peopel go undrafted and turn out to be stars. The rod smiths, victor cruzes, Miles Austins, Chris Harris? of the world. Theres plenty of talent. Even in other football leagues. And who knows we might start getting more international talent. I like the 8 division 4 teams a division system but im open to expansion personally. Not too much expansion tho. Im sure the old school fans who have seen it change over the years could care less. Back in their days it probably was about 16 teams. TRB

  16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Tide & Sndvl,

I agree, I like quinn as well. For all the reasons you guys stated. He got seriously screwed in the QQ but he has been nothing but a class act. Not the most talented but I would welcome him as a back up. For all we know he coulda been a starter elsewhere. We essentially wasted 2 seasons of his life. I would like him back as a back up but I also wanna see him catch on with another team. Prefrably a team built like SF with great running and defense. Him and alex smith are very similar. He has been nothing but cordial and supportive no matter who the starter is. And he is very much so a part of the lockeroom chemistry. And seeing as how we won’t be morphing into a full on option offense, he can stay. TRB

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Quinn is just another good practice player, seems like we just got rid of one, put him in real game time and here comes the deer in a headlight, no thanks, no to Quinn, but then again everybody already knew where I stood on that.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

    Legwold about FA:

the Broncos have termed their planned approach to free agency as “aggressive, but smart” and said they are in search of what they called “value signings.”

That would indicate they’ll be looking for specific kinds of players who may be out of the limelight during the frenzied opening week of free agency. Last year, with an abbreviated free-agency period because of the lockout, the Broncos’ biggest veteran additions were running back Willis McGahee, who got a four-year deal that included a $2 million signing bonus, and defensive tackle Ty Warren, who got a two-year deal that included a $2.5 million signing bonus.

Those were the only free agents who got multiyear deals from the Broncos before the opening of training camp last summer.

And for those who care about eye opening money issues:

The above approach was due in part to the fact that with John Elway in his first year of running the team’s football operations, the Broncos wanted some flexibility moving forward and did not desire to be saddled with a bunch of multiyear deals that prohibited them from reconstructing the roster.

The Broncos spent some cash before last season on their own guys. Tim Tebow got a $6.28 million bonus that was included in his contract , and Demaryius Thomas got a $6.38 million bonus payment in his contract.

Ouch, 12.6 mil in bonus money to Tebow and DMT alone!

This year, Champ Bailey has a $1 million roster bonus due March 15, a relatively small consideration in the NFL world but still a check the Broncos must write, and Von Miller will have a $9.15 million portion of his original signing bonus coming to him March 31 as a deferred payment.

That’s just over $10 million in cash already accounted for before the team begins its free-agency pursuits.

    Double ouch!

And now for the capologists out here:

As of last week the Broncos had 54 players under contract for the upcoming season, including the “futures” players they signed after the season, a total that included all eight of their practice-squad players. And while NFL Players Association executives said at the Super Bowl this week they do not know what the salary cap will be for each team in 2012, it is expected to be in the range of $120 million per team unless something unexpected happens.

The Broncos, including money set aside for insurance and other benefits, have $101.4 million in salary cap commitments on the books for 2012, so they have some flexibility. They have 14 players with salary cap figures of at least $2 million, led by Elvis Dumervil’s $15.6 million cap number and Bailey’s $11.3 million cap number.

    So, bottom line:

Overall, though, if the Broncos stick to the plan Elway has laid out for the future, the draft will be the team’s emphasis in building the roster. It would be unexpected if they dived into the top tier of free agency, especially given the up-front cash that would require.

And up-front cash has been a consideration for the team in recent years, even dating to coach Mike Shanahan’s last two years with the team.

The nice thing about Legwold is he gets it (at least the way I think, we are like the long lost twins), so he tells it to you as blandly as he can but without going in it too deep taking a chance at hurting his credentials with the Bronco organization because he still needs info from them, that’s where we differ, haha.

Anyhow I couldn’t agree more, just talked about that yesterday, Bowlen is barely coming off the money hangover from Shanny and he has been extremely reluctant to spend in FA, so why would this year be any different than last, most likley not. More like last year the whole first week we will let the teams with deep pockets fight over the top FAs and at the end of the second week we will sign a few left overs. So our hopes there really lie in finding someone as productive as McGahee again, a late gem on the “cheap”.

And if Legwold has ANY idea what he is talking about we are now approximately 19 mil UNDER the cap, so everyone is clear about that, because I can see last year arguments about all that starting all over again, different year, same old …

  19. imready says:

I agree with the majority here, Quinn is a known commodity and knows the system. We are talking backup , not starter, though he has never gotten an oppurtunity as a starter since he left Cleveland. Hard to say just how good he might be if he got 5-6 games under his belt. It would be nice for him to get an oppurtunity to really compete for a starting role on a team that really needs a starter. He has shown flashes of quality play at the position when given the oppurtunity. Wish him the best whatever path life leads him down.
Some of those guys on that QB list are down right scary to me. Personally, I like young guys as a backup who still have something to prove and haven’t had their noodle knocked around for 15 years in the NFL. I can deal with a young guy throwing a pick than a “proven veteran”. Why? The proven veteran should know better. Go Broncos!

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Vegas has already posted the odds of winning the SB for next year, and many Bronco fans won’t be too pleased about it would be my guess:

SD 15-1 and the other 3 AFC teams 50-1, something smells rank about that.

But rest easy, Jaguars and Browns are projected to be way worse than we are, LOL.

And look at the bad teams in the NFC, Shanny being part of all that….

  22. baylinorcrush says:

meant 3 other AFC West teams of course.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Best dinner pairing of the night in Indianapolis: Adam Sandler and Tim Tebow out for dinner together.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

About the upcoming draft, just a thought:

Joe Montana was picked in the fourth round in 1979 behind Jack Thompson, Phil Simms and Steve Fuller.

Tom Brady was picked in the 6th round in 2000 behind Chad Pennington, Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman, Tee Martin, Marc Bulger and Spergon Wynn.

You make what you want of it, LOL.

  26. sndvl says:

Here’s a trick I had no idea about, just in time for the big game-

It’s game time. You’re hosting, which makes you the quarterback of the party. Your friend blitzes you with a six-pack of warm beer. Don’t let this blitz get in the way of getting blitzed.

    Salt, Water, n’ Ice

This is the beauty of chemistry. Salt lowers the freezing point of water significantly. Fill a cooler with plenty of ice, salt, and water. It should be nice n’ soupy. Cubes of have only so many points of contacts with a can of beer, whereas a solution like water can completely cover it in coldness, plus the solution will be about 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Using this technique, it’s possible to get room-temperature beer down to the mid-30′s in less than 5 minutes.

The only drawback to this technique is that by lowering the freezing point of the water the ice is going to melt fast, and once it’s all melted the temperature will rise again. This means you going to have to drain some liquid out of the cooler and continue adding more ice at regular intervals. Not ideal in the middle of a close game. That said, it’s a reliable solution that’s safe for cans or bottles, and is probably your best bet.

  27. sndvl says:

Trick #2 The Rag N’ The Freezer

This one has the benefit of convenience. You might not have a cooler you can fill with a ton of ice, water, and salt, but there’s probably a freezer nearby. Just putting it in the freezer commando isn’t going to help your situation very much—you need to wrap it up, son! Take a couple paper towels and wrap them around your beer, then douse it in water. It should be soaked but not dripping (you don’t want ice forming in your freezer). Air is not a very good heat-conductor. Water is a better conductor, plus you get a little boost from evaporation. Pop it in the freezer for 8-15 minutes, depending on the freezer’s temperature (err on the side of caution).

There are definitely drawbacks to this method, the biggest one being that you must not forget about the beer in your freezer. Which, y’know, you’re likely to do when you’re drinking beer. Set a timer and don’t forget it. If you leave it in too long the can or bottle may explode. Which is bad. In fact, you probably shouldn’t try it with bottles at all. It’s no where near as efficient as the salty ice-water technique anyways. Not only does it take longer, it won’t get as cold, and you have to wrap each beer individually, which wastes time and paper. But, it’s also not the worst option out there.

Thanks, my life is complete now.

My trick for the game tomorrow is to have a growler filled with Jingo Pale Ale in my fridge right now, right next to a couple of Inversion IPA, a couple of Convict Hill Oatmeal stout and behind it a 12 pack of Costa Rica Imperial if the others fail to do the trick.

  31. Applejack says:

I’ve been so bored with Patriot/giants stuff that I’ve had to go and watch NFL highlight videos from Denver games. The steelers game is still so awesome.

Then, I went through the blog archives during draft day 2010. So funny! Bay’s terror of Dez. Beast’s hatred of anything Florida.

    Fun times, fun times.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

sndvl, I don’t necessarily buy the all we need is a back up to Tebow approach, I rather think the powers at hand are more interested in finding a viable option for long term if Tebow doesn’t workout, hence I think it would be more likley to happen in the draft, i.e. multiple trade with Jacksonville (including Tebow) where we can end up with RG3 (who would automatically be annointed starter) or getting Foles or Tannehin in the first or a gem in the later rounds the likes of Montana or Brady, haha. I would keep Weber as a back up over Quinn anyday and if experience is what you really want then Fox should go with Delhomme. Quinn is just a pre season sensation, at least as long as the pre season game is not one that decides who will be our starting QB, because we all know how he can blow it then too.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

AJ, my stepson graduated from Oklahoma State last year so I was very familiar with Dez, and Cox too for that matter, both have character/diva issues with minimal smarts who we are better without, no matter what Dez has done with Dallas.

  34. Applejack says:

I think 2012 will be Tebow’s to keep or lose. If we stink it up, then we have a chance at the big names in 2013.

So, looking for a backup in case Tebow gets injured and see if he can get to be a 60% passer. If Tebow can become a consistently proficient passer, fans and analysts alike believe he will be an incredibly dangerous player. In fact, I think he could become The Tebow. Never to be duplicated. But then at a sub 50% completion %, he could become a ex NFL QB, by 2014.

  35. Applejack says:

Dez continues to have off field issues, so character concerns were justified. Funny wasn’t it that McD was so concerned with having players with good character, and yet he himself…..

Speaking of character issues, the PC trial is this month. DT will have to testify for sure.

I`d like the QB Vince Young as a backup, a proto-type of Tebow QB. As far as the draft, I wouldn`t draft a QB until 4th round at the eariest. Not a sound QB class once you get past Luck and RG3.

  42. Bronco_Turtle says:

Strand… I don’t even think RGIII is a ‘sound’ pick… I also like the Idea of Vince Young coming in behind Tebow… He does have talent, he just hasn’t worked hard in his career… Tebow’s attitude and work ethic would be great for him…

  43. strandoftds says:

I believe Tim Tebow will have a good sound season as our starting QB in 2012. He`ll develope and work out the kinks in the offseason, no worries their.

  45. strandoftds says:

I do like RG3, but Tim Tebow is our QB. Besides, RG3 will be gone within the top 5 picks overall. Theirs no way we`d get him, not even apart of the equation. We are in dire need of DEFENSE. Our starting QB is set in place. No need to chase fantoms. Thats my take on it.

  46. Bronco_Turtle says:

I personally feel bad for the Franchise the decides to use a top 5 pick on him…

If we wanted him we could get him (RGIII) but it would be about the worst move by Denver on Draft day since we took Tommy Maddox…

  47. strandoftds says:

Vince Young is a sound QB as a backup. He`s maturing as a young man as well and learning how to grow. He has had some charactar issues in the past but nothing be totally alarmed about. Vince Young had to overcome and learn how to deal with some failures, thats the only way to growand be stretched. Two years ago I wouldn`t even want to get Vince but he`s proved himself worthy. Vince Young is a talented QB and with Tim Tebow by his side will do Young wonders in a great way.

  48. Bronco_Turtle says:

I’m sticking by my Draft Board… I expect Denver to get a Quality CB at 25 or to take the TE out of Clemson…

I agree we are in dire need of Defense, but we also need some real weapons for TT…

  49. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry turtle, not taking the bite, haha.

  50. strandoftds says:

Wanting Tim Tebow to go to Jax through a trade is just a dream. It`s not going to happen. Spoken by a Broncos fan who likes Tim Tebow as their starting QB. I`ll stick with what works!
