Goodell Talks State of the League

February 3rd, 2012 - 4:49pm by Stuart Zaas

INDIANAPOLIS – At the NFL’s annual press conference, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that NFL Network will televise five additional regular-season games next season as part of its Thursday Night Football package.

The network will carry Thursday night games in Weeks 2-11 and 13-15. NBC will carry the season-opening game in Week 1 on Thursday night and the Thanksgiving day primetime contest in Week 12.

“Adding these games to the NFL Network schedule will give more players, teams, and cities the primetime stage,” Commissioner Goodell said. “Our fans can now get an early start on the NFL weekend in the season’s first 15 weeks.”

As part of the Thursday Night Football schedule expansion, all 32 teams are guaranteed a primetime game next season.

GLOBAL GROWTH

Earlier this year, it was announced that the St. Louis Rams would host games in the United Kingdom for three consecutive seasons as part of the NFL’s International Series. The Rams are the first NFL team to commit to playing games abroad on a regular basis.

On Friday, Goodell announced that the popular channel NFL RedZone will be available in Spanish beginning next season. NFL RedZone is produced by NFL Network and shows viewers live look-ins to the various games in action on NFL Sundays.

The commissioner talked about making international growth a priority and opened up the possibility of playing games in Mexico and Europe in the future.

“There is a great deal of interest in Latin America to play a game,” Goodell said. “We would like to get back to Mexico with another regular season game. We’ve discussed it with our partners in Mexico and it is something we would like to get done sooner rather than later.”

Goodell said that the league wouldn’t expand its International Series without careful consideration and planning.

“This is all about a collective strategy to make our game more successful on a global basis, and the effort that we are putting in with the U.K., and London as an example, are all designed to build a model that is going to grow our game and its popularity in the U.K. If that’s successful, we will expand throughout Europe. The same thing is true in Mexico, and what we can do in Latin America if we’re successful there.”

SUPER FUTURE

Although the weather has been unseasonably warm in Indianapolis this week — and was unseasonably cold in Dallas last year — the 2014 Super Bowl that will be played in the New York/New Jersey area has given other cold-weather cities like Denver hope of hosting the event in the future.

“We are a city worthy of hosting the Super Bowl,” Broncos president Joe Ellis told the Denver Post this week. “It’s definitely something we’re looking at.”

Goodell said that while he is all for playing the game in all sorts of weather elements, the league will look at the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl to determine its plans going forward.

“I’m a big believer that the game of football is played in all elements,” Goodell said. “We see it, and some our classic games were played in snow or ice or cold. … We do have another side, which is they believe that when you get to the Super Bowl, it should be played in conditions that are not impacted by weather. That’s a balancing act. We’re going to play an outdoor game in new York, in 2014 for the Super Bowl. … Let’s see how that event comes off. We think it’s going to be very positive and let’s go from there.”

The Broncos front office will be watching that event closely, hoping it will open the door for cities such as Denver to enter the Super Bowl hosting rotation.

“Who wouldn’t want the Super Bowl?” Ellis said to the Denver Post. “I think it would be great for Denver, and our city deserves an event like that.”

“Whatever, it was clear as day what you intentions were:

“but I guess it depends upon whom is doing the visualizing and the reasons behind it….””

Yeah, well my winking smiley didn’t work, because I had too many periods in in front of it.

And I meant exactly what I said, as I always do. If you take it personally, that’s your problem, not mine.

Strand, I really would like tebow to succeed also. I love his off field personality, his intangibles and his very unique skill sets as a runner. He is not Vick, Newton, Young etc. Look at his combine numbers. His 3 cone number is freakishly quick.

But I don’t know if it’s possible to sufficiently improve his pocket passing skills which includes mechanics, reading defenses, progressions, etc.

And I also think he has to improve in the next two years. All speed runners lose that explosive edge by early thirties. The Tebow traits that give him the unique upside doesn’t give him a 15 year career. Six or seven is what I think he’s got left. And I think 6-7 probably fits his personal timeline for marriage and ministry.

    Just my opinion.

  3. strandoftds says:

AJ, thats a good fair assessment. Timhas to improve from the pocket just as a whole. If he does improve in those areas as you mentioned, Tebow will be a force to be reconned with, if not his career will be short lived.

  4. strandoftds says:

As Tim learnes to get better in the pocket that of course doesn`t mean he`ll play in the pocket all game. The Broncos got to use Tim Tebow to his stregths. Develope him in the pocket and use those pocket formations when it`s call for such as 1st n 10, well you know what I mean, just like any other pocket passer. But use Tim Tebows stregths in the shotgun when need be.

  5. strandoftds says:

If John Elway didn`t get used to relying on the pocket formations, then his NFL career would have been short lived too, so I fully agree and know where your coming from, good call.

For anyone who s interested in the NFL Honors show tonight, it starts at 9:00 Eastern tonight, with Red Carpet coverage starting at 8:00. I think I told Weatherman it started at 10:00 Eastern on a previous post. Here’s the info link for those who might not have seen it:

Sure hope Miller and Tebow win their categories.

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

I want Tebow to succeed as well, mostly b/c I have a hard on for DEFENSE and am tired of watching defensive collapses year after year… It’s like a being forced to watch a bad movie over and over again…

However, with the new rules this Commissioner has put in place really favors the passing game like never before in league history.. Touchdowns = ratings, and ratings = money.. It will be harder and harder for the ground and pound style teams to win the big one.. Even the Giants have a very explosive offense this year, with any given pass play having a chance to go the distance.. I support Tebow, but we as Bronco fans need to also be realistic and not try to reinvent the wheel if it doesn’t work.. We’re not at this point yet, but lets be savvy enough to when to jump ship vs. going down in a blaze of glory.. LOL! Perhaps this is what bay was trying to say??

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

*a hard on for defense, and would rather spend draft picks on defense vs. drafting a QB, if that wasn’t clear

  9. Applejack says:

Thinking about the rumor that was out there about Tebow being hurt the last 5 games.

Wonder if that’s the reason for why he fumbled so much towards the end of the season. I never could understand how he could go from ball protection being a strength to mr. Fumbleitis.

  10. imready says:

Anybody know Bay personally? You have to wonder as aggressive as he is if he has some severe health issues. Medication can do funny stuff to a person, I know, my UC has me off and on steroids, frankly it makes me a different person. When he gets called out, he does try to be more considerate of others. It doesn’t take too long before he starts going wild again. Just curious, drugs and alcohol can cause some pretty wild behavior and so can pain. Hope he’s ok.

I hope our guys get a lot of attention tonight at the NFL HONORS. I will be watching Carlos Condit v Nick Diaz instead CAN’T WAIT. I am from ALB so my boy Condit gotta bring that BELT HOME. Nick Diaz is a GREAT FIGHTER. I think it is going to be very ENTERTAINING.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

It’s like a handful can’t ever let it go, how sad, resorting to stuff like that, what a life, or lack thereof. No medication whatsoever, no health issue that would have anything to do with mental instability, no history of alcoholism, drug abuse, pain yes, physical pain that like a man I bear rather than killing my brains with pain pills, no records of any kind with any authorities, just a regular insignificant average every day Joe Blow with a family who is a Leo and happens to have had a love affair with the Broncos his entire adult life, hence the fire burning bright on this blog.

This is not the proper place to perform personal attacks, character assassinations or psychological evaluation of other bloggers and I would strongly suggest you refrain from any of it in the future.

This is not the first time you went there with the medication thing, it’s just totally uncalled for whatever your thought process may be.

As a joke like “you probably forgot your meds, LOL”, I’m all for it, but this is right down mean and demeaning even though it was carefully worded as a question and there is absolutely zero place for it on this blog whatsoever.

  14. G_moneycricket says:

LOL It’s not THAT BIG of a DEAL BAY.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

If it was just once here and there, agreed, but this has turned into harrassment a long time ago.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

If I was BFE you’d hear exactly how big a deal this is, trust me, LOL.

  17. Applejack says:

No HOF for Parcells. Newton = AP offensive rookie of the year. His head will explode.

  18. Applejack says:

Von Miller. AP defensive rookie OTY

  19. baylinorcrush says:

Tim Brown is not shy about his disappointment about the HOF:

    81TimBrown

Raider nation!! Don’t bother to watch tonight they passed on me again!! In fact, no wrs made it again.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

2012 HOF class is: Jack Butler, Dermontti Dawson, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Curtis Martin and Willie Roaf.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

    Congrats to Von!

  22. Applejack says:

Haurbaugh is coach OTY. No surprises here. Deserved for sure.

  23. Applejack says:

    Foxy finished 3rd.

  24. Applejack says:

    Heh.

@JeffDarlington: Baldwin “Tebows” on stage with hands toward sky. Tebow gets up from his chair, walks on stage and adjusts Baldwin for appropriate pose. Ha!

  25. Applejack says:

Stafford wins comeback player. Tebow never say never.

  27. canadasbroncfan says:

as the conversation has come up this week about the nfl is all about money[ie charging for media day] do you think the leauge will let their biggest money maker be a backup qb. If not in denver than he will start somewhere else. Its all about the benjamins so we should make as much as we can now because if he goes, that team will make the same he goes to. Jax is struggling for people so dont be to sure the LEAUGE makes something happen at the draft. Just saying the LEAUGE runs everything and that is a smart business move. Unless they are already the LA JAGS and we dont know it.

  28. OrangeTsunami says:

I would love to be on phones during the draft.. Hope we video the war room this year and post it on the site after!!

  29. imready says:

I was meant as it was posted, not as an attack but concern for another human being. My unfriendly and challenging comments towards you in the pass where meant to hopefully make you realize how you make others feel. Obviously , you just do care .
