Gase on Manning

January 17th, 2013 - 12:21pm by Gray Caldwell

Perhaps no one in the organization spent more time with quarterback Peyton Manning during the 2012 season than his position coach, Adam Gase.

Now offensive coordinator, Gase shed some light onto his relationship with Manning.

It’s built, he said, on their shared work ethic.

“The way that he works, I think (we) probably helped each other because I think he appreciates when he sees guys trying to do what he does — grind like he does,” Gase said. “I think that’s what he’s looking for with everybody in the building. He gravitates to people like that. I tried to do that 100 percent, just get after it as much as possible, get him as many answers as he needed for that week. In the offseason, the studying and being able to be ahead of what we were doing, that was huge. You had to really get after it. He’s as smart and works as hard as it gets out there. You can’t just walk in there in his meeting room and just say, ‘Hey, I think I got it.’ You better be on it.”

The types of questions Manning asks are “always productive,” he said, and are aimed at solving problems quickly and improving the offense before the next week’s game.

The thing about Manning, Gase said, is he can solve a lot of those problems himself.

“Peyton Manning wants to be coached,” he said. “He does a great job of, when you give him a play, if it needs to be better, he does a great job of putting you in that play. It’s the best situation possible for a guy calling plays, if you call something and it’s not good, he fixes it and puts you in a better play. That’s what he does that’s so great that I don’t think people admire it enough. That’s why you don’t see a lot of bad plays with him.”

So McCoy and Whisenhunt are Chargers now huh?!

  2. Bronco Rick 48 says:

can’t wait to go 19-0 next year and bring the grand prize to Denver

  3. seansds3d says:

I like it! Promote within and we don’t have to rebuild or retool as much. We can build off of the most successful year in a long time and go for the big dance next year. Go kick some butt Adam! GO BRONCOS!!!

  4. horsepower1 says:

I like the Gase promotion to OC!!! He has been tutored by some of the best in the business and will have the drive to succeed. Does anyone know who we are looking at for QB coach?

  5. OTbroncos says:

Whisenhunt is a good hire by McCoy, as he needs someone there to lean on, being his first HC gig. But I can see whiz bolting after this year, no pun intended. There is no doubt the AFC West has gotten better, but I think that’s actually a good thing, and will serve us well in the long run. The 6 games we had in the division were a joke, and did not prepare us well for adversity. A few more bumps in the road next year will make us a stronger team IMO.

  6. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

Do you think we get steven Jackson or will we draft a RB? there are a lot of free agents that we could pick up but we all know that you build from the draft. I really would like us to get Eddie Lacy but I don’t know were he is going in the draft.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

    Gase promoted to OC.

Wow, how exciting, I can barely stand it.

A guy 34 years young whom Fox will essentially have much more seniority over than McCoy and that much more influence.

So what does that do for Fox Ball?

I do agree with one of the things some of you guys are saying, it will bring continuity, LOL, Fox ball continuity.

This is a tough pill to swallow…. Looking forward to see some good playoff football in the Championship games on Sunday, there is even a chance they might play those games to win…

I have the feeling this is going to be such a letdown kind of off season for the Broncos, with no high picks and no major changes, a don’t fix it if it ain’t broke mentality this is shaping out to be as the Gase promotion shows.

My only hope is Elway can change old dog Fox, not great odds there…

It will be a good off season for me to not be getting overly involved with since we will pretty much resemble the 2012 team when the 2013 season starts, at least in philosophy. John F now you listen to John E and take his advice and recommendations you hear! Just watching the closing press conference by Fox and Elway I could feel by Elway’s answers how he meant for Fox to look deep into what went wrong, even so he just said everyone needs to look into what went wrong, find out why and work at correcting it, it was pretty much clear to me he was mainly addressing Fox, because as always it starts at the top. And Fox is all that as far as calling games, and a horrible playoff game calling that was, pure unadulterated Fox ball.

You can do it Fox is all I got to hang onto for 2013 now that Gase is OC. No way that guy will take the offense completely over, he will be learning under the guidance of Fox, oh well, nothing I can do about it. Good luck improving Fox’s way Elway, your job is going to be a lot harder than mine, just sitting here as a fan, so you make bigger bucks than I and you deserve it believe me, LOL.

You all enjoy Championship Sunday including Fox and maybe we can all learn how it’s done…. one can always hope…

Maybe they thought Manning should pay tribute to Tebow by “Tebowing” with 31 secconds left and two timeouts?????

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Well Manning is no Tebow when it comes to Tebowing, LMAO!

  10. CARAMELLOO says:

Hahahaha @ Manning Tebowing!! I really hope this dude Gase plans to go petal to the metal. I’m not even optimistic about next year more like I guess we will see.

  11. RH709 says:

Gase has already stated that pace will be paramount.

  12. OTbroncos says:

I think it’s slightly short sighted to put all this on Fox. I’m not defending him, nor have any reason to do so, and it could be all him, all I’m saying is we really dont know. McCoy was calling the plays, has already said he won’t be calling plays in SD, and Peyton gave no fight on either of the two kneel downs. The same Peyton that waived off the punting unit in Indy. We can’t lose sight that he’s an older QB, still recovering, and not used to this type of weather.

  13. oldsouthstander says:

Love Gase’s petal to the metal attitude. Now, will Fox allow him to do just that???

  14. OTbroncos says:

It’s entirely possible that the “percentages” that Fox was playing were influenced by some intel that we don’t have access to.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

I vote for OT Head Diplomat of the Broncos in N-Y, haha.

  16. OTbroncos says:

I’m just digging for any answers. I’m having a hard time accepting that we’ve become a very predictable, conservative team, with vanilla play calling that plays not to lose…

Your positivity is infectious bay.. Lol

  20. baylinorcrush says:

There is almost 8 months for that, open wounds take a while to heal and if you just choose to ignore them they will most likely get infected… I got hurt and I’m going to pay attention, just me. We all beat to a different tune, mine is nothing like yours and that’s cool. Optimism, realism, pessimism, whatever makes anyone tick. I stand in the middle, realism all the way baby, hence no big crashes. I’m to old to keep on dreaming.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

You guys have fun with the kool aid, I graduated to stronger stuff, I’m out for now.

  22. OTbroncos says:

I hear ya. We all deal with things differently. I’m personally still in a stage of shock, and I’m just trying to make sense of it all.

  23. tlcat06 says:

I’m glad some of my BBBPs came true! GO BRONCOS!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!! I can’t wait to see what happens this off season and I am confident that John Elway know what’s he’s doing.

I’ve moved past shock into freaking excitement for next season. Sure, this hurts. Is like a bad tattoo I can’t hide, but I really do think that what Kiz said about Peyton getting better with age is true. Honestly, the guy is a perfectionist and he had a 13-4 season with a brand new team. Imagine what it’s going to be like when he doesn’t have to adjust to a new stadium and a new city and a new house and a new practice facility and a brand new OC that he doesn’t know. I know I’m crazy and you don’t want to heat my optimism, but I just had to pop in and put in my two cents. We are headed the right direction. I was depressed for about a day and then I realized that we have consistency for the FIRST time in years. We have a coach who’s been around for two full seasons, a defensive coordinator that’s coming back for a second year and we haven’t had that in, what? 8 years? We have one of the best QBs of all time who will play his second season with us. We have a bright future and I refuse to be depressed. It’s not that I’m not mad about what happened, I’m just optimistic about the future.

  24. tlcat06 says:

Oh, if I hear more about percentages though, I might throw up.

  25. tlcat06 says:

Psssst…… I said one of the best, but you all know exactly how I feel about PFM.

Arians first job in AZ is to find a QB, any QB, lol.

  29. oldsouthstander says:

TTs big chance to shine. LOL!!!

  30. brian_schneider says:

I think there are positives to take away from the season. A lot on here are just assuming we’re going to get back to where we were this season, and I don’t think we will. You look at teams like the Patriots, what sets them apart is..aside from Spygate..is they are always finding ways to adapt. You look at the past two SB winners, the Packers and Giants.

The Packers made it there with injuries and the lowest seed, the next season they lost in the playoffs. The Giants won and this year didn’t even make it to the SB.

So I’m just saying unless we can adapt and change and switch things up, we might not get back to where we were. We’re fortunate that we are in the weakest division in the NFL, but for how long will that be. If we don’t adapt we’ll be sitting on the bottom of the AFCW lonely, cold, and playing the percentages.

  31. brian_schneider says:

Giants didn’t even make the playoffs this season

  32. Jwscout says:

I am happy about our season! The secondary uncharacteristically looked like a couple high school freshmen in their first game with zero help from the pass rush. We all know that is not our team, but that was the team on saturday. Baltimore did a great job reconstructing their offensive line, props to that post season change. Unfortunately the arguably best ever corner in football got beat 3 time with two going for TDs. Our dynamic duo on the D line got stuffed. Kneeling the ball Was the right call considering we have the #2 Defense. With the weather that day it was better that we wast their timeout, then hope a pass was caught for a first down, a lot of passes were miss that day which were normally caught.

I hope we can bring some continuity to our coaching staff for a few years and stop supplying the AFC west with head coaches. I hope the front office is also looking 10 years into the future with trying to supply this team with depth and not patches to win a SB for one year a then become irrelevant again like we we until a miraculous season last year.

  33. RH709 says:

If you are of strong will. Pause this at the 15 second mark and take it in for a second. Raise your hand if you think “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. Greatness will happen with the 2013 Broncos. I have no doubt.

  34. RH709 says:

We don’t need to adapt at all. Peyton has run the same offense his entire career and how many 10 win seasons does he have? Adapt nothing, grow and develop yes. Gase sold the John’s buy saying he is going to up the tempo. We dominated games this year on talent and scheme, neither of which should changed cause they don’t need to.

NE adapts because they know they have some large holes and they are doing what they can do mitigate those holes by adjusting schemes.

  35. OTbroncos says:

The more I read about Gase, the more I like. It must be pointed out that hiring a 34 year old OC would be the polar opposite of a converative hire, so I see a positive there. Let us also not forget, the Broncos were critized by many for signing an aging QB coming off those surgeries, and being “conservative” was definitely not part of the criticism. Remember we had no plan ‘B’ and that raised eybrows at the time. I can’t help but wonder had that fake FG earlier in the season been successful, maybe we would’ve taken a different course as far as play calling..

  36. OTbroncos says:

*polar opposite of a conservative hire

  37. brian_schneider says:

How many SB rings does Peyton have to show for all his 10+ win seasons? It’s great having winning seasons but they don’t automatically make SB trophies.
We obviously need to adapt, when we don’t adapt our secondary gets burned. I’m not talking about completely overhauling the system, but we need to be able to adapt and adjust and not just continue to play the percentages.

  38. brian_schneider says:

    **disclaimer**
The statement above “How many SB rings does Peyton have to show…” is just a metaphorical question to make a point. I understand he already has 1 SB ring. It was a question of point not a question of inquiry.

  39. RH709 says:

To be fair, in the second half of the Ravens game, Moore was shifted over to help Champ over the top. It is rare that Champ ever needs or has Safety help but in this case, on this day, he did. Moore just made one mistake, that mistake just happen to be the most bone head play of his career. So, in that case, you could say Denver adapted.

This team will go far next year, I have no doubt.

  40. Olap2009 says:

You know, we have lost big games in the Elway and Dan days and I recovered right away, but this lost has me where I still can not watch any sports on TV, That D— 3rd and 7 I can’t get pass it, I am upset with Payton, Fox, and McCoy glad his A– is gone I do not know what to think about next year H— I can’t get pass this one!

  41. strandoftds82 says:

I side with RH. The game we lost to the Ravens could have gone either way. We lost. There was a play that happened to were Flacco threw the ball and the football was in the air and our CB just couldn’t get there. If the ball was in the air 1 second longer, its an INT and we’re in FG range and we win the game, and our Broncos are hero’s for another week. This is a game if inches. And because we lost many to you say we never bounce bounce. For shame for shame! I’m not giving up! WE WILL BOUNCE BACK!
ITS A GAME OF INCHES! Just because we lost doesn’t mean that next year is a wash. If thats how some of you feel, then don’t watch the games in 2013! As for me, I’m ALL IN. ITS a FREAKIN GAME! I’ll enjoy every minute of next year. We’re going to do great things in 2013 and Manning is just getting his feet wet! BRONCOS 2013!!

  42. strandoftds82 says:

I’m mad that we lost too, but thats no reason to throw in the towel for 2013! Thats ridiculous. We first need to re-sign some key players that contributed and had a great impact on the field. We know who those key Broncos FA are. We’re well aware of them.

  43. RH709 says:

If you think this team was motivated this year…just you wait.

Word is the John’s picked Gase because he preached an aggressive, up-tempo offense. It will still be the Manning-Moore offense but if I am reading into it correctly, don’t expect conservatism.

My discontent for the sudden end to the 2012 season has already been replaced by my excitement of the 2013 season.

  44. RH709 says:

The Broncos have plenty of cap space and are in a good position to retain the players we need and go get players to fill the few holes we have.

Comparing us to the Giants and saying they made a SB then didn’t make the playoffs is unrealistic.
How about the 49ers last year? Kyle Williams was in the wrong place at the wrong time and it ended SF’s season. They returned the entirety of the Defensive starters and made some acquisitions, look where they are now. Favorites to win in Atlanta and go to the SB in my book.

  45. baylinorcrush says:

    LMAO!

  46. RH709 says:

Ok Bay, I’ll bite. Why are you laughing?
