Gameday Spotlights Champ Bailey

November 17th, 2012 - 1:48pm by Gray Caldwell

When the Broncos take on the San Diego Chargers this Sunday, fans in attendance at Sports Authority Field at Mile High will receive a Gameday program featuring cornerback Champ Bailey on the cover.

The cover story, titled “Still the Standard,” looks at Bailey’s decade-plus of dominance in the NFL, beginning with his first game in the league.

Every Hall-of-Fame career has to start somewhere.

It just so happened cornerback Champ Bailey’s started with an interception off a Hall of Fame quarterback.

In the very first game of his career, Bailey – then a Washington Redskin – was matched up against another legend in Michael Irvin for the majority of the day against the Dallas Cowboys.

“You’ve got to think, since I was little, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, I’d looked up to them,” Bailey said. “That was a surreal moment. You don’t get an opportunity like that to play against guys you really watched and liked growing up.”

He had mixed results in the contest, as Irvin notched five catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

But Bailey, ever the competitor, wanted to make sure it was known that those scores weren’t against him – he was on the sideline late in the game with cramps. And in addition to five tackles in his first-ever game, he snared the Aikman interception – a fitting start for the now 11-time Pro Bowler.

“I felt like I belonged at that moment,” he said. “You pick a Hall of Fame quarterback – not a lot of people can say they did that. It was a special moment for me.”

The program also features Q&As with tight end Joel Dreessen and Secondary Coach Ron Milus.

The cover story will be published on DenverBroncos.com in its entirety next week. Below is an early look at the cover.

    Champ is the man!

As for tomorrow, the Chargers have no chance tomorrow… Rivers is garbage and regressing each week. There is no way he breaks out of his slump against this defense!!! Starting with the man pictured here ^… This is such a great chance to put the Broncos Stamp on the AFC West. Lets end this streak they have in Denver tomorrow!!!! I am saying at least a 14 pt win and I would post a score but I think I did already lol anyways…

    LETS GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. sndvl says:

    You rock Champ!

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!!!!!!

  3. killerkod says:

Can’t wait for the game tomorrow! I feel confident we’re gonna take care of business and put those chargers in their place….which is NOT winning the AFC West. No chance our team gets down early like we did in the first game but the 2nd half will be the same. Key is to rattle River’s cage early and often!

I want to see ZERO turnovers by our O and special teams tomorrow…….and put the issue to bed.

Miller…….you can’t post pics here but if you upload them to Flickr, you can share the link.

Interested to see how JDR gets DJ back in the mix. Hopefully he’ll really turn a corner in his personal life and translate that onto the field. He is a talented guy and he’ll help our D.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  4. ScalptheChiefs says:

DJ is going to be awesome Kod, doesnt seem like he will be on the field too much but it will be nice come playoff time to have those fresh legs!!!

  5. BRONCOSONMINE says:

HELL YEAH CHAMP IS THE MAN..AND I HAVE A FEELING HE’S GONNA PICK OFF RIVERS..IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE CHAMP RETURN ONE TO THE HOUSE AGAIN CUZ IT’S BEEN AWHILE

  6. strandoftds82 says:

The Chargers don’t have a shot! If the Broncos come out of the gate hot, it’s over by half time. Maybe will start from where we left off from the last game when we played S.D. HaHa!!

  7. strandoftds82 says:

I just got home from doing lunch with a buddy and he told me that he saw $100.00 for a box of twinkies. I said to him Really?! I love twinkies but not for that much. What has the world come to. Yikes!!

  8. strandoftds82 says:

    On Ebay that is.

  9. tlcat06 says:

I am so excited about tomorrow!!!!!

  10. strandoftds82 says:

    Me too!

  11. strandoftds82 says:

You got some points from last weekend, nice!

  12. strandoftds82 says:

I expect a thrashing by us tomorrow. I think S.D. is going to get embarressed.

  13. tlcat06 says:

Yes I did… My prediction this week is 45-17 LOL that’s how much confidence I have. I hope they take it a little more seriously than me! LOL

  14. strandoftds82 says:

    Lots of points. Wow!

  15. strandoftds82 says:

    Mine is very similar.

  16. tlcat06 says:

I’m so excited. And I should tone my hopes a smidge I think…

  17. strandoftds82 says:

Tap your cleats 3 times! HaHa!!

  18. strandoftds82 says:

Nah! it’s good to be confident that way.

  19. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

Hope everbody has taken their dose of whatever they need to get over that fumblitis that was going around the special teams and offense. If so,tlcats prediction could very well happen.

  20. strandoftds82 says:

    Agreed MD!

  21. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

At this point though,1 point or 100,just put an end to their streak of winning on Broncos grass.A couple sacks should knock that horseshoe out of Rivers A$$

  22. strandoftds82 says:

I wanna see Von Miller get 4 sacks this game!! That would be a neat trick!! LOL

  23. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

4 sacks for each of the front 7 would be,well,I just don’t think there are words to describe how neat a trick THAT would be.An impossibe feat but hey,one can dream.Right? At least until they start taxing dreams.

  24. strandoftds82 says:

I remember LB Derrick Thomas getting 7 one game. Thats crazy stuff!

  25. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

Holliday needs to keep the td streak alive too.

  26. strandoftds82 says:

How about a KR and PR by Holiday for TD’s. That would be awesome. The NFL would be talking then!

  27. Gregory Williams says:

Denver Broncos all day Champ Is going down in history right next to Dion along with some other Broncos. Shoutout D.J. Williams Von Miller Elvis Dumervil D. Thomas Eric Decker Peyton Manning Every Offensive Lineman and every Bronco player yall got this. Tracy Porter and Trindon Holliday I see you kid

  29. oldsouthstander says:

    Greg:
One big difference between Champ and Dion, Champ can actually tackle. Champm Probably gets more tackles per year than Dion did in his career.

  30. monodono says:

I think this game is going to be alot closer than some of you think. These two TEAM’s are much closer than the records suggest. Plus this is a Divisional match up, alway’s a Battle. chargers are no push over and I’m concerned, The Denver Broncos will win by 3 20-17. Keep your heads on straight and let’s not talk so much trash until The Denver Broncos Win!

Believe me, I want to see our D throw rivers around like a rag doll just as bad as the next Fan, but lets be realistic here…

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  31. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hi Mono, I agree that this game is going to be a contest the whole way through… If had to make a wager I’d go Over/Under 47.5… and if I was forced to prognosticate I’d say Prater wins it on a 48 yarder with no time left… 24-23 Good guys

  32. monodono says:

I Like It Turtle, I just think both D’s are gonna step up and it will be closer than most Fan’s think. I say prognosticate away…

  33. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

    mono,
By capitalising the F in fan,am I correct to assume you are refering to my comment?

  34. baylinorcrush says:

I don’t know about you guys but when I read Turtle I still see Tebow and when I read monodono I still see Moreno.

And since I don’t care to see either Tim or noshow, my feel for the game is opposite of these two bloggers, kind of makes sense don’t it? A sizable blow out to me is more likely than a game decided by a FG no matter how I take everything into consideration.

But heck, none of us know for certain, that’s why fans speak their mind about the score however they wish, isn’t that why the blog holds not one but TWO contests?

It’s funny in my nearly 40 years of Broncos fandom I have always lived by the belief that it was a lot classier to talk trash before the game than running it down people’s throats after the game. That shows we all live by different standards, none right or wrong, just different.

Anyway the majority of us watch the games, because as we all know on any given Sunday anything can happen, which by the way is why the bookies are the ones who make the money in Vegas while the bettors eventually all lose their shirts, LOL.

O yeah, it’s Sunday, are you ready for some football?

GO BRONCOS!!! Put the Chargers out of contention in the the AFC West title race, stick a fork in them right now, that would put us up by three games plus we would hold the first tie breaker by beating them twice, which in essence equals a 4 win lead with only 6 to play, and playing teams like KC twice! And I know Manning knows all of that and the importance of it more than anyone. GIT R DONE, don’t even let them breath!

  35. strandoftds82 says:

Cool stuff Bay. A 4 game lead sounds ideal for us Bronco fans! we should be able to win this one! LOL

  36. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

Luck, timing or good work by the front office?Whatever it was,the Texans gotta be feelin’ like they took a steer horn to the back side right now.

  37. Orange_Crusher says:

    Happy Game Day Bronco Maniacs!!!!!!

Three of the most endearing coaches in Broncos history lead the Houston Texans….

    Kubiak, Dennison and Phillips…..

Those guys still love the Broncos, Elway and Mr B……

Trindon Holiday was just an Early Christmas present from our best buddies in the NFL….

    ILMSDB!!!!

If someone knows anybody on the medical staff please refer this message. I believe Tracy Porter may be dealing with Conversion Disorder. I have a friend who dealt with the same symptoms as Tracy for over a year. Doctor’s could not pinpoint anything until recently. My friends seizure and seizure symptoms were actually a result of anxiety. The symptoms are like those of seizures but not actual seizures. She has been taking anti-anxiety medications which has helped immensely. I was just wondering if some staff could look into this, in hopes to get Porter back on the field. I love all my Broncos and want them all to be healthy and happy players. I hope this message could provide some help. Go Broncos!!! Lets crush these chargers all night :D

  39. tlcat06 says:

Oh I think we should all start a conversation about Tebow, mainly just to annoy Bay. I’m in that mood and apparently after his crack @ turtle HE forgets that Tebow did do great things in Denver and is a huge reason why WE GOT PEYTON! Tap your Cleats Three TIMES!

  40. OTbroncos says:

Happy Game Day folks! Just heard an interview of Phil Simms on a local show out here in NY, and Simms couldn’t stop gushing about our Broncos. i only mention it, b/c he has been very critical of us over the years, and this is the second it e I’ve heard him speak VERY highly of the Orange and Blue. Call it the “Manning effect”?

Things I’ll be most closely watching today:

    Robert Ayers
    Tony Carter
    DJ Williams
    Ronnie Hillman
    Trindon Holliday

And of course, my personal favorite:

    TURNOVER MARGIN

  41. OTbroncos says:

    *second time

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Tebow did do great things for us as anyone would attest.

But in my opinion it’s the persona perception of him by his fanatic fans that messed up the overall chemistry of the organization and fans alike including this blog, just ask the Jets what that feels like about now, LOL.

And you are cracking me up with your cracks, haha.

  43. Tide Bronco says:

Hey Cat. If you’d like some debate material for your above mentioned conversation, Mike Klis has quite an article in the DP this morning, in case you haven’t seen it. However, I won’t be participating, as I have a super busy day ahead.

    http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_22019084/mike-klis-n-y-jets-should-show-some

    Go Broncos, y’all!

  44. tarheelbronco says:

I would really love to see the D come out and set the tone by putting Rivers’ keister in the dirt immediately. Maybe then we can finally shut his big flapping mouth! No prisoners! GO BRONCOS!!

  45. OTbroncos says:

Hey there Tide. Nice to see your handle, I hope all is well. The Tsunami got washed away in the Hurricane over here..

  46. DaddyBronc says:

Stick a fork in him!!!! LOL

Hi Tide – Cat – Turtle – Bay…Good to see everyone in fine form this morning.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, I warned you guys up there, I HATE HURRICANES!!! Specially huge nasty ones. Glad to see you are seemingly able to function, not everybody is back on blogs I’m sure, other more important things to deal with, like where to sleep and how to get heat….
