Fundamentally Sound

December 14th, 2010 - 2:15pm by Gray Caldwell

On Tuesday, the NFL Players Association and USA Football announced the All-Fundamentals Team.

Champ Bailey was named to the roster, earning a trophy and an equipment grant to give to any youth or high school football program he chooses.

Ryan Clady earned the honor last season.

The roster is chosen based on two criteria: fundamentally sound play and consistent display of good character. Those selected are role models that young football players should watch and say, “I want to play like him.”

The fundamental Bailey is noted for on the roster is “playing the ball.”

This season, Bailey has accumulated 43 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and 15 pass breakups. In the past two games, he has held Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe without a catch and kept Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald out of the end zone while breaking up two passes intended for him and drawing an offensive holding penalty against the receiver.

The nine-time Pro Bowler and member of the NFL All-Decade team for the 2000s is currently tied for sixth all-time among Broncos players with 30 interceptions with the club. His 48 career interceptions are tops among cornerbacks and third among all players in the NFL since his rookie season in 1999.

We might not be able to cut Cox I was reading an article on ESPN today that he could face up to life in jail or 15 years in jail with life on probation. Must be some serious stuff. So we might not even get the opportunity to cut him ugh will this season end already. I’m going to block this season from my memory.

  2. strandoftds says:

    Hilarious!

Here is the link for that article on Cox.

  4. strandoftds says:

Sad. Very sad if Cox ends up in prison. We`ll see.

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks for posting that Shaver, it’s the first I heard it occured on Sept. 6th, before the regular season, up until now all anyone said was it was reported on Oct. 28th, almost two months later!?!?!?! If it was that bad a crime it’s hard to believe the complaint wasn’t made sooner, so I am definitely not going to pass judgement now.

  6. Shaver87 says:

Yea definitely a sad story. You make one bad decision and it could cost you your life.

  7. strandoftds says:

After all this time it makes you wonder what really happened. Interesting. Why did the person take so long to call the authorities??

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

We need to sign Champ,Harris, and Prater. All 3 will be free agents.BTW we got Stanley Daniels back,he’s on the PS.

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hey according to The Mile High Report,if the season ended today the Broncos would have the #3 pick.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Wow Cox could face a 4 game suspension next year whether he’s convicted of the crime or not,for violating the personal conduct rule.

  11. BeastFromEast92 says:

What happens if Champ walks and Cox goes to prison or is suspended?
We may be forced to draft a CB,Damnit I want a DT or DE!

  12. sndvl says:

I said it once, I’ll say it again, Our hystorical season continues!!!

  13. sndvl says:

If management can come out and say it was a mistake hiring ‘he who shall not be named’, certainly they should have no problem admitting their mistake about Champ. AND SIGN HIM.

If not, then sorry BFE, Peterson has to be our number 1. Or trade back, get Rudolph, trade back in and get the kid from Nebraska, whose name I’ll certainly butcher! (haha, flashback. Lol)

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  14. bronco-blaze says:

You say Orton should stay in because he tried his hardest for the last 2 years? Let me ask you this…Whats Ortons Win Loss record with us?? How about of all the games you watched, when did Orton ever come into the clutch for us to win the game?? NEVER! Orton wins when the pressure isnt on him, and wins when we dont need him. Kyle Orton is a good QB, but doesnt have the “it” or “clutch” factor. Lets face it, we could have gotten alot closer to winning ALOT OF THESE GAMES if orton didnt throw terrible, pathetic, bs passes.

-KYLE ORTON SHOULD BE BENCHED, for the reason that he himself cost us the last 2 games in my opinion. HE HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD IN THE POCKET and gets sacked or picked off. Are you kidding me? And im sick of people saying “well he had no run game and put up outstanding numbers. Course, but so could jeff garcia and most any B average QB in mcdaniels system. Mcdaniels system was great, but you need the pieces and defense to support it. He also put up all those numbers when we were behind because he couldnt move the ball downfield for us after our fizzle first drives.

-I dont agree with putting Tebow in against oakland logically, but my gut and my bronco heart wants it more than anything. However, against the cardinals he should have started. I bet you though, if the cardinal game was this week and the raider game was last week, tebow would be starting. Id rather Tebow be put up against a mediocre defense , but one that still has the ability to mess you up. THe only prob with the Texans defense is their inconsistency.

Lets face it, we may be able to win against the Texans if tebow starts, but well prob get messed up against that good SD defense.. However, alot of them are slow, and if we had tebow in we could have the upper hand with his scrambling ability.

(SORRY FOR THE REPOST IT WAS ON OLD BLOG WHEN I DID IT :D )

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

sndvl,Amukamara is going to be a 1st rounder too,so if we have to draft a CB,I want Peterson, like I said earlier,he’s the best CB to come outta college since Champ, and he’s a great KR/PR too.

    Sign Champ,because he’s great,and so we can draft a DT/DE.

  16. strandoftds says:

The Bronco`s possible Prince charming. Amukamara. Say it 5 times fast.

  17. strandoftds says:

Hey Guys, just wanted to let you know that there is some detail about Cox`s crime. It`s in the DenverPost.com. She is a model. This is bad from what I just read.

  18. strandoftds says:

It says she was a helpless victim. She was incapable of appraising herself. Man I`m affraid for Cox. This is some serious crap. There`s more, but the DA doe`s not want to give out anymore info as of now. She`s a college student and a model for magazines. What the………..

  19. broncosfreak30 says:

The way I see it is it is going to end up with Cox going to prison! There looks to be nothing about how he didn’t do it and everything!! The way I see it is that we need to give Bailey his contract and show him his respect and sign Peterson in this draft!!

I am really wanting both Bowers and Peterson in this draft but do not see how that can happen!! Also, I am wanting Kyle Rudolph in this draft as well!! As long as Tebow turns out to be what we are hoping he’s going to be, which I think he will, the only thing we need on offense is TE!! On defense, need a complete shut down corner (Peterson) and someone who is great at getting pressure on the QB (Bowers). Idk what we should do with our picks! I think someone told me that we have 3 second round picks! Should we trade 2 of those to someone in the top 5 picks so that we can get Peterson and Bowers and hope that we can grab Rudolph in the second??

  20. broncosfreak30 says:

Bailey definitely still has it all and then some and he would be the absolute perfect candidate to help with Peterson!! Dang, Champ and Peterson as our corners, that would be perfect!!

The problem with our defense this whole season is QB’s have been picking on Cox with him being the rookie! We can’t get to the QB so he buys enough time and Cox eventually ends up with his guy beating him! We are going to need someone to fill in his place with hopefully Peterson and also going to need to get someone to help out doom and the rest of our linebackers with getting to the QB!! I think those two players could solve most of our whole defensive problems!! We could also grab another defensive lineman in the 3rd or 4th! But I think we need two great TE’s out of this draft and two great DL! And a great corner!

  21. broncosfreak30 says:

I know some people won’t agree with me but I really think that we can turn our whole team around in just this coming off season, as long as we get the right Coach and the right picks in the draft!!

  22. broncosfreak30 says:

I was watching some videos on Peterson and the dude has some shut down speed!! I mean this kid has Bailey speed which could make teams panic when deciding to throw towards either one of them!! I definitely think though that we need to get two 1st round draft picks for this draft and get Peterson and Bowers!! What do y’all think?

  23. Yovi21 says:

yea, I want Peterson and with the bad news coming from cox I’d say even if Bailey does stay we should grab him if hes still there. Some crazy stuff with Cox, if it is true I wont have any sympathy, why in the world would you throw away such an enviable life? Parrish, I hope this isn’t true, you could be great.
Freak, I believe we only have 2 second round picks, but I think (I know this is crazy but roll with me) we trade Orton and Lloyd (together) to a team for a 2nd and a 3rd. I know this would only happen in my dreams, but I feel like some teams: Titans, Panthers, and Cardinals might jump at that deal! This draft will be crucial in terms of competitiveness next year, and I feel we should grab Peterson!

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Even after I read the DP article about Cox, I still see no reason in there for me to judge him before everything comes out in a court of law. I mean just look at Kobe Bryant’s arrest in Colorado. The way I see it so far it’s anything but an open and shut case, hopefully every one here will do the fair thing and give the young man the benefit of the doubt until and if he is proven guilty.

  25. dcftcollins says:

something is fishy on the cox thing. look at the dates. im not saying hes inocent but something is fishy

  26. DenverOranges says:

I dont have any thing left to say about cox But I realy think we should still draft a Dt/De in the first maybe goodie will stay and get healthy but we have to get some kind of pass rush going

  27. baylinorcrush says:

That has been my motto for years as everyone knows, we need nothing but DL help with the first pick, we have blown that call for so many years for whatever reason and look at where the D is at! Even if there is a problem with Bailey and Cox we need to address the CB position later in the draft.

And has anyone given any thought that if we have the monster D line in a 4-3 line up with Doom and Ayers outside and Bannan and Dareus or Fairley inside like BFE said last night, we could then get a crap load of pressure on QB’s and therefore having a first class CB tandem is not as big a priority?

There is only one priority on this team, building up the D line first, then move on to LB’s, and only after that address CB and TE. Anyway, that’s how I would do it.

  28. DenverOranges says:

    bay,
I hope who ever is the new HC/GM/Etc they make the right calls the o line has plenty of young blood on it that will just get beter now its time to do the same for the d line Im kind of a fan of the 3-4 I think Joe mays showed alot of potential in his 4 games with him elvis ayers and dj williams as are line backers And a fresh dline I could see us being a beast of a d next year

  29. rebelbronco says:

Bay, the big difference between Kobe and Cox’s case is that the women that accused Kobe had sleped with 10 different men the same night. Also, it is very comman for women to not come out right away after allegedly being raped. It is a tramatic situation that they feel embarassed by. Also, going to trial means them getting on the stand, and having the defense play it to make it look like she asked for it. If Cox is gulty he deserves to rot in prison.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

I honestly don’t think we have any LB’s good enough to play the 3-4, I mean of late our two best LB’s have been Mays and Hunter, guys we picked up in August that no one else wanted!!! That about says it all to me right there. Just watch the Ravens or the Steelers one day, they each have 4 LB’S that are 10 times better than our best one, that’s pathetic. I’m sorry but in my opinion we have one of the weakest LB corp in the league and we can never find that great 3-4 NT anyway so what’s the sense in keeping hitting our heads against a brick wall trying to do the 3-4, just my opinion.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

Innocent until proven guilty, like it or not.

  32. caramelloo says:

This is a nice read if it hasn’t already been posted by someone else…….

    http://www.broncoszone.net/2010/12/tale-of-three-quarterbacks.html

  33. rebelbronco says:

I agree with all of you. The 4-3 would be a better fit for our personal. The 3-4 is succesfull with great LB’s. Ours just aren’t there. We should go after peterson with the first pick, trade Orton to have three picks in the second and use those on DL and LB’s. Powe from Ole Miss should still be available to take in the second, maybe.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Good thing you Louisiana boys won’t have anything to say about your Peterson LSU guy come draft time, haha.

  35. caramelloo says:

You’re right Bay we won’t and that’s one pick we would love to see happen! It would be fitting for him to go to from making us proud here in Louisiana to doing big things for our favorite NFL team.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Mellow, I lived in Pensacola for 16 years, the favorite teams there are the Seminoles, Gators, Bama and Auburn, so no need for LSU there, but I used to make New Orleans my playground two to three times every year and loved it.

  37. rebelbronco says:

I’d love to see Peterson and Powe together on Defense. We already have Tebow and Knowshon on Offense. Two bitter rivals (Florida and Georgia) winning together on O, and two bitter rivals (LSU and Ole Miss) winning together on D. Has a nice sound to it. Please make this draft fun for us since the season wasn’t!

  38. DenverOranges says:

You have a good point Bay But champions arent born their Made I think with more time In the 3-4 Will do them good I mean lets get a steady Dc to stay for atleast 2 years and I bet you will be singing a different toon About Mays,Ayers Dj And Elvis they could be the next big thing Best Lb Corp in 2012. Uh Might as well Think Positvie abou8t the future i realy dont have anything good to say about 2010

  39. caramelloo says:

Yeah Bay we show love out here in Nawlins! Glad you had a great time and you have to get back out here for a visit. Hate to see Peterson go but he’s done all he can and needs to do here!

  40. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bay,I agree with your 8:24 post,we need DL and we both are tired of taking other positions ahead of our Dline. When is the last time we had a dominating Dline??? I can’t remember one, even in the Superbowl wins.I know we need a CB and some LBs,but it all starts upfront like you said, the Dline puts pressure on the QB,and that helps the DBs a LOT,so Champ and Goody(if he is healthy)are good CBs,well capable of 3-4 more years. We do need some young blood tho, especially if Cox is gone, but like you said again,we can wait till later rounds!Thats how I would do it too.

  41. caramelloo says:

I am not a fan of Ayers! I hated that pick bc there were other guys available at that slot. Ayers is a lazy hot head.

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well the Mock draft from the Mile High Report seems to agree with me and Bay somewhat, they have our draft like this:

Nick Fairley DT Auburn 6’5 300 lbs
Stephen Paea DT Oregon State 6’1 311 lbs
Kyle Rudolph TE Notre Dame 6’6 260 lbs
Greg Jones LB Michigan State 6’2 240 lbs
Aaron Williams CB Texas 6’1 195lbs
Greg Romeus DE Pittsburgh 6’6 270 lbs

The mock draft don’t mean squat tho remember last year when the Raiders took McClain, but I like this mock draft.

  43. BeastFromEast92 says:

Ayers can dominate at DE,that’s why we draftd him.He never played OLB until we changed to a 3-4 and converted him.He played great at DE his last year in college and outshined all the DEs in the Senior Bowl.

  44. caramelloo says:

Beast I can deal with that mock draft bc it’s Defense heavy. Peterson is nice and all but we do need to address that DL first and foremost. This year I think we get back to drafting needs over wants.

So Beast….. Ayers at DE is what you’re seeing?

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Bay says innocent until proven guilty … except in marshalls case >_< lol. But yea, im taking the same stance, as I did with Marshall. Gotta let it play out and whatever happens happens, but don't judge the man, lotta gold diggers out there (not saying she is, she could possibly be the victim of a heinous act).

Front 7 all day in the draft. Some say we dont have enough to run the 3-4 but we very easily could draft enough. Enough good for years to come. The thing about the 4-3 is that I wanted us to switch to it for this year when we lost doom, not to talk about ayers as well. But next year, 3-4 all day … Its undeniable that Dooms best year was in the 3-4. And not just the 3-4 but nolans 3-4, he could probably do it in another DCs 3-4 but I would prefer Nolans. The random unknown cameron wake (undrafted 05) for example in nolans system has step it up like crazy. So I say we draft our 3-4 and be set for years. Or 4-3…whatever gives us a great defense. could care less.

ps: lets not forget about sydquan, everytime he gets a chance to play he makes a play whether it be a fumble forced or interception. He can return as well, and does well on special teams.

  46. BeastFromEast92 says:

In ’98 Ayers had 49 tackles 15.5 for loss (tops in the SEC) and 3 sacks at DE.He was projected to go between 8th-15th,a lot of us had him on our boards, what shocked us is that we took Moreno insted of Orakpo.

Yeah I could see Ayers and Doom going back to DE,Doom had a great year at OLB,but with his bullrush he can still dominate at DE,when an OLB lines up on the LOS,he’s pretty much a DE anyway.

  47. BeastFromEast92 says:

Thats just how I see it others might see it different, which is ok too.Just thinking outloud anyway.lol.

  48. BeastFromEast92 says:

Plus it’s a whole lot easier for a college DT to play DT in the NFL,than to play NT,that to me is the hardest position on Defense to dominate. It’s hard to find that great NT,but Fairley or Dareas are both monster DTs.

Like Bay said we don’t have the LBs to play a 3-4,you gotta have 4 great LBs to dominate with the 3-4,we don’t have 1 LB that can stop the run, cover the pass,AND rush the QB.

  49. milehighmagic88 says:

Even if Cox ends up in jail and Champ doesn’t get resigned, I still don’t see any reason to draft a CB in the first round. I think that would be a huge mistake. I think the problem with this franchise in recent history has been not building in the trenches. We NEED to get a top notch D-Lineman in the first round, we can draft a decent CB in round 2 or 3, there will be several available still. Plus there will be some solid CBs in free agency, such as Eric Wright from Cleveland.

I know Peterson and Amukamara are really good players, but I think it would be a huge mistake to panic and draft a CB early to fill the holes. Let’s build in the trenches first. The following year we can address a position like CB in the first round.

  50. milehighmagic88 says:

BFE, I totally agree with you. That’s why I think DT is the position we should address early. Ayers and Doom are gonna be fine at DE, and we can worry about CB further down the road.
