Fundamentally Sound

December 14th, 2010 - 2:15pm by Gray Caldwell

On Tuesday, the NFL Players Association and USA Football announced the All-Fundamentals Team.

Champ Bailey was named to the roster, earning a trophy and an equipment grant to give to any youth or high school football program he chooses.

Ryan Clady earned the honor last season.

The roster is chosen based on two criteria: fundamentally sound play and consistent display of good character. Those selected are role models that young football players should watch and say, “I want to play like him.”

The fundamental Bailey is noted for on the roster is “playing the ball.”

This season, Bailey has accumulated 43 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and 15 pass breakups. In the past two games, he has held Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe without a catch and kept Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald out of the end zone while breaking up two passes intended for him and drawing an offensive holding penalty against the receiver.

The nine-time Pro Bowler and member of the NFL All-Decade team for the 2000s is currently tied for sixth all-time among Broncos players with 30 interceptions with the club. His 48 career interceptions are tops among cornerbacks and third among all players in the NFL since his rookie season in 1999.

The energizer bunny, kept on going and going…

  2. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bay we both been screaming for top DLs and LBs forever, just to get Ayers the last 2 years. This draft I hope we get the big guy.

  3. strandoftds says:

Yep. Champ is the one player you want to treat with respect from the organizations side of bussiness. Other players see, you mess with a players like Champ then this can happen to me. Not good.

  4. strandoftds says:

    Get that big monster DT.

  5. sndvl says:

    Champ played with Darrell too!

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

Fairley DT Auburn 6’5 298 lbs
Bowers DE Clemson 6’4 280 lbs
    Dareus DT Alabama 6’3 306lbs

Either of these 3 guys would satisfy me.

  7. BeastFromEast92 says:

    sndvl,you are right.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, yeah always here asking to build up the trenches, and that will never stop until we do, unfortunately last year in FA was mostly band aids but we at least got Bannan out of it, but we all know to build solid foundations for the future it must happen in the draft.

Strand, glad to see you are understanding the incredible importance of the handling of players’ contracts, that Bailey snaffu was a big mess.

  9. strandoftds says:

BFE, didn`t you say that Fairly was a Monster of a DT? What do you know about DT Dareas who`s also ranked in the top 10?

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

strandoftds,I’d like to get Fairley DT,but Bowers lined up opposite Doom would be wicked sick too!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Dareus might be available since we might get a top three pick now, maybe even second.

  12. strandoftds says:

You asked my question before I even sent it through. ESP! LOL

  13. strandoftds says:

oooops You answered my question. Cool.

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Dareas is a monster in the middle just like Fairley, athletic for his size, and a big run stopper.

  15. strandoftds says:

Bowers is that DE right. I hear he`s unstoppable.

  16. strandoftds says:

I`ll take either. We do need that run stopper.

  17. Orange_Crusher says:

Maybe the plan is to go for the #1 draft pick in the first year that the rookie salary cap will be in place..?

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think if we could get Fairley or Dareas at DT,along side Bannon would be a great set of DTs,I’m basing this on a 4-3 scheme maybe put Doom and Ayers back at DE.

    Doom DE
    Bannon DT
    Fairley or Dareas DT
    Ayers DE

  19. strandoftds says:

If there`s anything the Bronco`s need to FIX LIKE YESTERDAY IT`S PASS RUSH! PASS RUSH! PASS RUSH! dire need……

  20. strandoftds says:

    YA! WICKED!

  21. strandoftds says:

Panthers are #1. I don`t see them winning any of there remaining three games. There Horrid.

  22. BroncofaninATL says:

Was messing around on you tube earlier. Tebow to Riley Cooper. Hits him in stride most of the time. 8 minutes of win:

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

I heard the draft will be stock piled at DT and DE,that’s good we need both!
OL are supposed to be very thin this draft, not that I think we need one.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

OC, you are correct, no one will be scared of having a high pick this year because everybody is counting on having a rookie salary cap when a new labor agreement is signed, at least there better be. Yes, this year draft is a totally different strategy, no need to be scared of holding those top picks, they should not break the bank.

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

Right now we are tied with Buffalo and Detroit 3rd place at 3-10 behind Cincy at 2-11 and Carolina 1-12.

  26. strandoftds says:

The only offensive player I would go after is the TE of Notre Dame. Kyle Rudolph. I hear he may even go in the latter part of the first round.

  27. strandoftds says:

And rightfully so. Those top rookies making far to much money coming out of college. Crazy.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Every mock draft has Dareus and Fairley going neck to neck as the first DL/ DE out there, we must get the best one and we will be able to pick because most don’t have them go until third pick, which we are basically in front runner position to get.

  29. strandoftds says:

BFE, I`m not sure how tie breakers work in the draft. My guess is Division, then confrence. Don`t totally know though. After that I think it`s the coin flip.

  30. strandoftds says:

    Bay, I like it.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

    • Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage.

    • Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure.

    • As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage.

  32. strandoftds says:

Strength of schedule? not sure how that works. I would really like to know. Can you explain it to me please?

  33. Orange_Crusher says:

There’s another reason not to put the Tebonator in the game… We might actually win one and then it jacks us down to the 4th or 5th pick…

Lets let Skippy lead the drive to pick #3…. lol

  34. strandoftds says:

I`d rather be pick #3 but I`d sure like to see Tim Tebow just to see what he can do.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Strength of schedule is based on what record the teams you played the last year had, meaning if you played teams with better records and tie you get the lower pick.

  36. strandoftds says:

Oh from 2009. Thanks Bay. I`ve always wanted to know how that worked. Great!

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, for those who care to know:

    Tied with us at 3-10:

    Buffalo

left on schedule, @ Miami, Pats and @ Jets, so will finish 3-13

    Detroit

@ Tampa, @ Miami and Minnesota, possible win against Minnesota, could end up 4-12

    Cinci at 2-11

Cleveland, SD and @ Baltimore, could win the Cleveland game and finish 3-13

Carolina will be the # 1 pick , at 1-12 with games against Arizona @ Pitt and @ Atlanta (best they could do is 2-14)

So bottom line if we finish 3-13 as I think we will we may end up in a three way tie for second pick with Buffalo and Cinci, In that case Buffalo has I’m pretty sure the easiest schedule so they could take the second spot and it might be coming to the wire in the tie breaker between Cinci and us for the third pick. Fun stuff, ain’t it? Time consuming but fun, I’m going to copy and paste this for my files.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

No strand, for the 2011 draft it will be from the 2010 season, this year, it’s always the previous year from the draft year…

  39. Orange_Crusher says:

Man, I’ve noticed a lot of articles with lots of the same stuff exactly down the the word from this blog. It’s everywhere you look to find Bronco news.

All the writers everywhere that want to get ideas to write and comment about the Broncos come here to get their material. All the way from the DP to the NFL channel and every Bronco blog site on the net.

I saw one today about how “Outstanding Orton became Ordinary Orton” and I sha-grinned my way to the end of the story and thought to myself “to bad we can’t charge them for it”? humm??haha

I think we are FAMOUS!!!!!!!! It’s too bad though, I go to those places to read fresh news and end up reading something bay wrote a week ago…haha

Maybe we even get read by some of the coaches and players and inside people like MrB and Elway… you can’t tell me that the two guys that love the Broncos most can resist checking in on us every now and then just to see what the dedicated fans are thinking….

    ILMSDB!!!

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Agreed 100%, that’s the new way of the internet, you can pick people’s brain for free and no one is stupid, they know where some of the good stuff is at, they can get legally rich on us, it’s a mad, mad world I tell you, LOL.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

If I got paid by the word I would be rich, hahaha.

  42. Orange_Crusher says:

Shoot dude! If you got paid by the word and I got paid by quirky quips we would make enough money to go into the football buisness with John Elway and buy the Broncos….

At the very least we need a small copyright royalty payment from the DP each week….lol

  43. strandoftds says:

    OK Thanks.

  44. sndvl says:

Baylin, gotta disagree with you on Carolina, other than the simple fact that Atlanta may be in a position to rest their starters. It’s a long shot. But still a shot. Lol!

  45. oldsouthstander says:

A KC win will put the Raiders out of playoff contention. KC is at St Loius.
    Bronco upset 17-16.
Just can’t predict a Raiders win even though they’re a much better team at the moment. Can anybody imagine any Bronco fan saying that when the season started???

  46. baylinorcrush says:

That’s why I said best they could do is 2-14, they are not going to beat Arizona who is on a roll after pasting 43 on us, LOL, and certainly have no shot at Pitt, but seriously they are so bad even Atlanta’s back ups would make minced meat out of them in Atlanta, they might very well end up 1-15, 2-14 at the very best, but either way they will get the first pick, of that I am certain.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

Oldsouth, for the first Raider game we had 41 picks, NONE of them predicting us to lose, talk about the world flipping on it’s axis.

  48. broncos20 says:

I like the idea of going back to a 4-3 front.
3-4 didnt fit our personel, the Packers have the best 3-4 line up, hands down.they have 300+lbs DEs..

I like Fairley, Peterson, and Bauers in 1st round..we’ll have to wait and see..

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Its funny OC mentions that cuz i saw something in i think it was woodies mailbag that I was like….hmm either he got it from us or we are all just on the same wave length lol. But at least we are heard even if people don’t know they are hearing us LMAO….

  50. baylinorcrush says:

I just thought of something, in previous years we would be here posting the remaining games of the teams we are in the hunt for a playoff spot with, now I just posted the remaining games of the teams we are in battle with for the top three draft picks, LMAO!!!
