Brian Dawkins isn’t worried about how he’ll feel in December.
Right now his focus is on Week 2. But he still appreciates the way Head Coach John Fox designs his practices to keep players fresh throughout the season.
“We do what we need to do, get out of practice what we need to get out of it,” Dawkins said. “At the same time, (Fox) is always preaching about being fresh — fresh in the mind and fresh legs. For me, obviously, that’s beneficial.”
Fox talked about that philosophy Thursday when asked about how he ran training camp.
“I think having fresh players counts, especially in December,” he said. “People remember what you do in December, and we’ve always prided ourselves on finishing strong. You’ve got to rest them. It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint, and you train different for a marathon. Whether it’s camp or our in-season schedule, we do our best to improve and get better in all three phases as well as keep the players fresh so they can play on Sundays.”
Dawkins felt plenty fresh in Week 1, when he led the team with nine tackles in his 26th appearance on Monday Night Football.
“‘Dawk’ is incredible,” Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen said, talking about the number of big hits the safety made on Monday. “That’s the way he plays the game and he’s always played the game that way. That’s what has allowed him to play the game for so long.”
Dawkins said he expects Fox’s practice schedule to pay dividends as the season progresses — but he’ll concern himself with that when the time comes.
“Let’s take care of business now and worry about that then,” he said.
INJURY REPORT
Champ Bailey (hamstring), Elvis Dumervil (shoulder), Brandon Lloyd (groin), Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), Demaryius Thomas (finger), Marcus Thomas (shoulder/groin), Ty Warren (triceps) and D.J. Williams (elbow) did not participate in Thursday’s practice.
A number of those players came out to the field to watch their teammates practice, however.
Below are photos from Thursday’s session.

To recapitulate the wall street link provided by stevecan2, the Raider fans have finally caught on to Al Davis, wonders never cease to happen, they have lost 21.3% of their fans, the Bucs are worse having lost 24.7 % of theirs and the Lions are the worse losing 25.2%, and we’re not on that list, so I dear you people who say Denver fans are bad fans, LOL.
bay……….anything interesting to discuss other then the QQ?
Change in the injury status for the Bengals:
Cincinnati’s rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who left the season opener at halftime with a forearm/wrist injury, practiced fully today and is on track to start against the Broncos Sunday.
This figures, go ahead, push the knife deeper into the wound:
The San Francisco Chronicle this week reported that the Raiders are appealing the NFL, saying that Sebastian Janikowski’s game-winning field goal against the Broncos on Monday was, in fact, 64 yards — one yard longer than the official game-book mark.
The debate hinges on the NFL record book. As it stands, Janikowski tied the Broncos’ Jason Elam (who kicked a 63-yarder in Denver in 1998) and the Saints Tom Dempsey (the first to do it, in 1970)
I have the Sunday ticket so I can watch all games but I am choosing to record the game because I don’t have the heart or nerves to watch it live.
Decker is refreshingly honest about himself:
“I have a little prima donna in me,” Decker said. “I guess because we play on the outside, we don’t have to mix it up and get hit all the time, receivers can sometimes have their own personalities. Maybe because of all the running we do and our legs get fatigued, it does something to our brains.
“But I do like to go inside and get down and dirty if I have to. I try to be one of the guys. I come from a small town, and I think it helped me learn values and character and staying humble about the whole thing.”
lol shaztah………….that’s just silly. You’re only delaying the inevitable! lol
plus, watching the game live is much more exciting, regardless of the outcome.
I really like Decker……….he has a great attitude….and his physique and ability kind’ve reminds me of Eddie McCaffrey…..
shaztah, that’s absolutely the worse way to do it with all due respect, live is where it’s at, the unknown, the possibility that it can go either way, I’m totally opposite of you in that regard, if I don’t see a game live and find out about the score I can’t even make myself watch it, knowing the outcome of a game kills it for me, simple as that, no more suspense on the edge of your seat type of feeling, it’s dead instead, like history.
That’s ok Prater has a strong enough leg to kick a 65 yarder,How dare them stinkin’ Faders come in here and beat us,and think they can walk out and take the longest FG record with them!!!!!!!FTR!!!
btw,I was reading an article like 2 or 3 days ago that stated Dempsey’s record was actually closer to 62 yards,Elam’s was right at 63 yards, and Janikowski’s record was almost 64!!
but Elams was the longest kick, clearing the crossbar by several feet, while Janikowski and Dempseys barely cleared!
Agreed bay,if I know the outcome of the game,I’ll never watch it.
I recorded a bowl game last year TN vs NC,some smart elic told me the score so I didn’t watch it and still have it on DVR,might as well delete it,I’ll never watch it!!!
Fox about the Tebow phenomena:
“You’re not going to please everybody. I don’t care if you’re in politics, I don’t care if you’re in business or I don’t care if you’re in coaching. I heard (former Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice say once, ‘Don’t let tomorrow’s headlines influence today’s decisions.’ I’ve tried to live by that the best I can.”
And then he proceeded to laugh when told about the guys trying to get the money together to put up Tebow billboards.
shaztah, live is the way to go,gets your Orange and blue blood pumping!!!
same here………..if I have to PVR the game, I block myself from all media so I don’t hear any scores……….even the scores from other games. Knowing the outcome just ruins the excitement.
They’re worried about whether or not it is “officially” a 63 or 64 yard field goal but they let the refs “spot” the ball where they “think” it is supposed to be? That’s one other thing that is really starting to get to me, the refs are becoming lazy. They don’t “make” the right call and if they do “oh well we have instant replay, we’ll just make the coach use his challenge flag on this call that we were too lazy to call correct the first time.”
Where was Ed Hochuli when Orton fumbled that ball LMFAO!
Fox is stubborn,I hope we don’t regret hiring him.I don’t mean to imply regretting it because he won’t start Tebow, but the fact that he decides not to use the best players we have to win,we went thru 2 freaking years of very talented players not getting a fair chance to play!
Somebody said Fox was vanilla and boring, but I think Elway knows what it takes to win,and hopefully he won’t make us go thru another grooling year of pathetic football games!
Hey I love JE,but he has a job to do,and ByGod he better Git-r-Done!!
I love Elam, but honestly, Dempsey’s kick was the most special. Jana? who, forget that. Prater will be given the opportunity to beat the record, as it should be.
The Denver Broncos fans are some of the best in the league. Losing seasons, heartbreaks, embarrassment and we are still here. I am just starting to wander, how many QB1′s, coaches, etc can the fans take, being told that we mean nothing to them? As far as bashing coaches, players, etc. OF course this is a figurative family. I know with me, I may criticize my brother, pressure him and so on, but as soon as someone outside of the family does it, I am up in arms on the drop of dime. And so to am I with the Denver Broncos. It hurts, to defend KO in person as he tells me, that I am absolutely nothing to him.
I guess there was no progress on the injury front at yesterday’s practice:
Starters Champ Bailey (hamstring), Elvis Dumervil (shoulder), Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), Brandon Lloyd (groin), and D.J. Williams (elbow) all were held out of practice again today as the Broncos prepare for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati. Defensive tackles Marcus Thomas and Ty Warren and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas also remain out.
The more practices those players miss, the less likely they are to play against the Bengals. The team won’t make any official declarations on playing status until Friday.
I’m not genius and I don’t know what drill Von Miller was doing but is that how we are coaching our guys to hit…that high? No wonder why we can’t tackle.
LMAO@brian..Hochuli is definitely a Broncos fan,and you don’t wanna argue with him,he will body slam your a$$,lol.
bay,can I change my score prediction,lol j/k!
Well guys this is B.S. I gott get off here my Damn pc is like slower than Hell,I can’t keep up,I guess I’ll clean all the crap outta it!
BRONC ON!!!!!
Well guys this is B.S. I gotta get off here my Damn pc is like slower than Hell,I can’t keep up,I guess I’ll clean all the crap outta it!
BRONC ON!!!!!
When Dawkins is saying the following about December he must be talking about Philadelphia, there is absolutely no way he can be talking about our Broncos, right? I mean please be specific about that otherwise that statement looks like a total joke, just saying:
“I think having fresh players counts, especially in December,” he said. “People remember what you do in December, and we’ve always prided ourselves on finishing strong. You’ve got to rest them. It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint, and you train different for a marathon. Whether it’s camp or our in-season schedule, we do our best to improve and get better in all three phases as well as keep the players fresh so they can play on Sundays.”
Maybe he’s anticipating he will have a decent December?
So…so many injuries
No, he says “we’ve always prided ourselves on finishing strong”!!!!! That’s black on white, just go back and read it, who is he talking about???? It can only be the Eagles.
Or he SHOULD be talking about the Eagles, because we are the Anti strong finishers, at least have been for years, both under Shanny and McD, late year collapses are our signature move, and Dawk was on one of those in 2009 and we were bad all of 2010, so I have no clue as what he is rambling about, better be his Eagles, but clarify please.
Well, Fox is all smile on every shot, maybe he’s got Cinci figured out, or was he all smile when he was 2-14 too.
maybe he’s just smiling cause he still can’t get over the fact that he still has a job in this league. LOL
brian: That’s a blocking sled, which is a heavy piece of equipment.
It’s usually a padded frame on metal skids, used for developing strength and blocking techniques.
In this drill, D-lineman and LB’s use to develop strength and agility in power driving O-lineman.
Here are some interesting things to look at. Considering a run game is the best asset.
Most favorable situations for KO to be successful in relation to a run:
1st down: Run for 3 to 7 yds = 2nd down pass. 102.2 rating, 59.6 comp %, 5 tds – 1 int
1st down: run for -2 or less yards – 2nd down pass. 97.5 rat, 70.0 comp %, 0 tds 0 int
2nd down run: 0 to 2 yds = 3rd down pass. 78.4 rating, 48.4. comp %, 1 td 0 int.
2nd down run: -1 or less yds = 3rd dwon pass. 60.3 rating, 57.7 comp %, 1 td 0 int.
3rd down run: 0 to 2 yds = 4th down pass. 158.3 rating, 100% comp %, 1 td 0 int.
3rd down run: 0 to 4 yds = 4th down pass. 130.8 rating, 60.0 comp %, 1 td 0 int.
That is taking into account, what occured last year on a KO pass attempt following runs giving him his best two situational QB ratings.
IF we look at no run and all passing it broke down as this in 2010:
1st down: 98.6 rating, 62.1 comp %, 7 tds 1 int
2nd down: 96.1 rating, 62.7 comp %, 9 tds 3 int
3rd down: 58.0 rating, 50.0 comp %, 3 tds 5 ints
4th down: 81.2 rating, 36.4 comp %, 1 tds 0 int.
IF we look at his entire career, it broke down as this:
1st down: 86.2 rating, 61.9 comp %, 22 tds 14 int
2nd down: 81.9 rating, 60.9 comp %, 27 tds 18 ints
3rd down: 67.6 rating, 50.0 comp %, 22 tds 17 ints
4th down: 77.8 rating, 43.3 comp %, 1 tds 0 int
Yeah, he just hit it hard enough that he is picking it off the ground, like he would me if he tackled me, LOL.
Point is, when game planning, after taking into account the defensive schemes, etc. The OC needs to have a really good idea on what to call when it best favors the weakness in the D and then the QB strengths.
Just like in Baseball when figuring out, who is the starting pitcher, who is coming in for relief, set up, etc. And what to pitch and when. And just like Baseball, the pitcher can’t do it all but it all comes down to them none the less and it is the coaches job, to make damn sure he has the best match up possible.
The raiders are always asking for something they don`t deserve. they have to cross the line just to get attention like a little spoiled child, Give Me My Candy Now Or Else!!!!!!!!!!! FTR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope the NFL says, no it`s a 62 yarder. LOL
Keeping McCoy’s as OC was arguably Fox’s biggest mistake as I talked about that at length Tuesday I think. He did it because he wanted continuity with the O and he ‘s got it! We are continuing on the same path, bad O line play, no running game and most of the passing plays going to Lloyd, continuation allright..
We can’t even finish the 4th Qtr. strong.
anyone remember that show, where they broke down the exact force of impact in the NFL. I roughly remember something like a OL hitting the DT with over 1k pounds of force. And a tackle by a DL was more!
http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/09/16/elway-weighs-in-on-ortontebow-discussion/?module=HP11_headline_stack
Do you suppose McCoy is up in the booth holding an XBOX controller picking the same play again and again? LOL!
The difference is Elway showed he was a gamer and a competitor and improved. Orton has just stayed the same after 3 seasons.
no Brian, he looks like a PS3 guy to me…. hahaha good stuff
Yeah, Millers looks strong as that sled is no light piece of equipment to move. Usually hit it low out of 3 pt stance and as you drive, you lift up in the air.
Now all that brings me back to the tandem of Lloyd and Orton and this is my take:
-They both have a long history of playing together with the Bears.
-They both are on the last year of their contract.
-They both are looking to get an offer for a lucrative long term contract.
-They both are trying to pad their personal numbers.
-Because personal numbers is what teams mainly judge players on.
-Because other teams will say so what if they didn’t win, they were on a bad team, with those guys’ numbers on our team we will be all world.
-So that’s why Lloyd kept saying ‘I don’t care” on the sidelines as pointed out by shaztah.
-That’s why Orton doesn’t care about the fans.
That is why both don’t care about winning as much as they care about padding their own numers. Sure they rather have the wins but they are not going to put their bodies on the line to achieve that and taking a chance at hurting their shot at a long term contract, as proven by the play of Orton and Lloyd in this last game, where the effort they put forth was way below 100%.
That’s my take, it’s very clear in my head and I stand by it.
I haven’t expected much in the character department from Lloyd, he has always been suspect.
About the Elway link above, Elway says:
“If decisions were made based on one week, I’d have been outta here after my first start!”
Point taken, but obviously has zero comparaison to do with Orton, ORTON IS A 7 YEAR PLAYER, that wasn’t his first game in the NFL!!!
Gotta keep things in context boss.
I am wandering if the FDA should test the water in Englewood. Something is amiss.
I became very apparant that Lloyd and Ortonn are out there for themselves. Lloyd is Orton’s “go to” guy. I just wonder what Orton is going to do this week with Lloyd out? Look for a lot more throw aways and/or balls thrown in the dirt (not leaving out the sacks either). Somebody please tell Orton that expecting the O line to hold forever is not in the playbook.
I’m gonna take a break, because honestly the more I read, the less I find that’s very re-assuring from ANYONE, Elway, Fox and the players included, let’s see how all that talking will do on Sunday on the field, that’s all I’m interested in, the rest is just cheap PR or plain don’t make sense at all, I feel like whatever little intelligence I have keeps being insulted.
Don’t worry, I’ll take all predictions.
I agree, I love watchign the game live as well … anything else doesn’t feel as special … games are great that way because its all in the moment, like how we were losing and the punt, and not knowing decker was an awesome returner and then BAM TD … fantastic. When recorded … u already see it coming … still fun but no where close to as fun.
Yea I heard about the raiders trying to get the spot checked out. It won’t pass … thats just silly. And its ok … Prater will reclaim the Bronco Record before this season is over. We flat out got the best stadium for long kicks, mix that with our ineffective offense and Fox’s belief in Praters leg (let him attempt a 69 in preseason … tho it was just preseason) and you have a recipe for claiming our Record back. Go Broncos.
I’m off to Vegas for the weekend I know I posted that the Broncos were going to lose but I’m throwing $500 on Denver plus 3 when I get there. Unless I spend all that money on beer on the plane.
Wish me luck and go Broncos!!!
