Fresh Mind, Fresh Legs

September 15th, 2011 - 3:53pm by Gray Caldwell

Brian Dawkins isn’t worried about how he’ll feel in December.

Right now his focus is on Week 2. But he still appreciates the way Head Coach John Fox designs his practices to keep players fresh throughout the season.

“We do what we need to do, get out of practice what we need to get out of it,” Dawkins said. “At the same time, (Fox) is always preaching about being fresh — fresh in the mind and fresh legs. For me, obviously, that’s beneficial.”

Fox talked about that philosophy Thursday when asked about how he ran training camp.

“I think having fresh players counts, especially in December,” he said. “People remember what you do in December, and we’ve always prided ourselves on finishing strong. You’ve got to rest them. It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint, and you train different for a marathon. Whether it’s camp or our in-season schedule, we do our best to improve and get better in all three phases as well as keep the players fresh so they can play on Sundays.”

Dawkins felt plenty fresh in Week 1, when he led the team with nine tackles in his 26th appearance on Monday Night Football.

“‘Dawk’ is incredible,” Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen said, talking about the number of big hits the safety made on Monday. “That’s the way he plays the game and he’s always played the game that way. That’s what has allowed him to play the game for so long.”

Dawkins said he expects Fox’s practice schedule to pay dividends as the season progresses — but he’ll concern himself with that when the time comes.

“Let’s take care of business now and worry about that then,” he said.

INJURY REPORT

Champ Bailey (hamstring), Elvis Dumervil (shoulder), Brandon Lloyd (groin), Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), Demaryius Thomas (finger), Marcus Thomas (shoulder/groin), Ty Warren (triceps) and D.J. Williams (elbow) did not participate in Thursday’s practice.

A number of those players came out to the field to watch their teammates practice, however.

Below are photos from Thursday’s session.

Trading Tebow might be just as hard a sell as trying to trade Orton was … just sayin’ …

  2. killerkod says:

with the occasional stomp to relieve frustration……….which coincidently happened just earlier this week……..hmmm, I wonder what brought that on? lol

  3. HardHitting27 says:

I do the same with my jerseys too, wear during the game, and take em off throw em in the closet cursing too. Been that way for 2 seasons, plus 1 game now!!!

I got told I need to settle down and not get so involved while watching the games at home. Else I could just go out to watch the game. Little does she know that’s part of my plan!! (sports bar, beer, no kids!!)

    Go Broncos!!!

    Throwing out my first prediction:

    Broncos 17
    Bengals 14

  4. killerkod says:

and if we lose to the Bungles……….oh lord…..

let’s just hope there’s not any gasoline and a lighter near by! LMAO!

  5. DenverOranges says:

Sometimes I wear nothing but my jersey and I also take it off and throw it at the ground such behavior has only got the cops called a few times it’s starting to become somewhat of a ritual around my house!

    Go Broncos!!!

  6. HardHitting27 says:

I would never even think about burning a Broncos jersey!!

Any word yet today on injury status of our boys? Last I heard was Champ and Doom will most likely sit, Lloyd was iffy, leaning towards sitting. And I’m sure NoShow will sit, unless he falls off the bench and hurts himself more.

  7. killerkod says:

no, I could never literally do it………..just figuratively to vent frustration. I love my broncos too much to condone such horrible behaviour.

  8. killerkod says:

I personally would like to see know-show ride the pine for the rest of the season………where he’s not such a liability. I think cause it’s against the bungles, anyone somewhat hurt will sit either way.

  9. Atwater4HOF says:

Jeremiah Johnson activated from practice squad. Looks like Knowshon is a definite out for this weekend.

Here is a portion of a letter from one of Tebow’s high schoool coaches. key point:
“It’s amazing how many people in the media “hate” on Tebow. They say “he can’t do it in the NFL”. Trust me Broncos I’ve heard this before. Don’t buy it. They say “he’s not ready”. Tebow led all rookies in QB rating last year (82.5). Orton’s had 7 years of experience yet his career passer rating is 79.5- less than Tebow’s who has only 3 games worth of experience. Seems to me like the guy who went 3-10 last year and has been in the league 7 years might be the one who “can’t do it in the NFL”. They say “he’s not a dropback passer”. Well put him in the gun then. Tom Brady takes 75% of his snaps from the gun. Timmy’s better at running downhill or rolling out than moving backwards anyways. Look at all the young QB’s who have gotten more of a chance to start in the NFL than Tebow: Jimmy Clausen, Andy Dalton, Colt McCoy, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford. How come its OK for them to start in the media’s eyes but not Tebow? My guess is that Coach Fox is sick of “Tebowmania” and perceives it as everyone telling him how to do his job, so he’s fighting back. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Get ready for another 3-10 start Broncos unless Tebow sees the field in some capacity. Coach Fox should start embracing “Tebowmania” instead of fighting it otherwise he’s dropping the ball just like Orton.

    Adam Hartle”

  11. killerkod says:

and I think we need to cut Goodman. Only thing he’s good for is soft coverage and horrible tackling!

Also this preseason: Tebow 108 … Orton 104.. Tebow was #10 overall in the ENTIRE NFL this preseason. SO by what criteria do most of you parrots want to use in determining a QB? wins ? STATS? Leadership?? Give me a break.. All management has to say is Orton = good & Tebow= bad and that is good enough more most people.. Just like management ditched Peyton Hillis… What a freakin joke

  13. Broncfalls says:

    Broncos 27
    Other Team 17

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  14. DenverOranges says:

know-show will be know -job after this year not even gonna waist my breath

  15. HardHitting27 says:

To the Front Office(even though we know they won’t read this):

While Orton may be great at pratice and Tebow is not showing it there, Orton is not getting it done in the heat of battle, and the number support that!!! Tebow has not been given a chance to show how he does in battle, with the exception of last years 3 games where he did well.

If we were to compare this to the military, Orton would be the redneck kid who could shoot the eyes out of a target at a thousand yards(well 10 yards maybe, because he ain’t got an arm) in the rain, spitting chaw and talking with a drawl. But when it came to combat he’d be the first one shot because he didn’t have it together.
Tebow is the kid who’s not getting the chance to support his country at all due to some political reason or medical condition(throwing motion, maybe?). But Tebow loves his country and all he can do is watch.

JJ is in, so who gets cut is what I`d like to know.

  17. strandoftds says:

I`d like to see JJ get more carries than Lance ball. I`m still not much of a Ball fan.

  18. WieminCA says:

I’ve come to the point where I wish Tebow wasn’t here – then we could concentrate on fixing what we have … right now it’s nothing but a big jumble of indecision … it’s just like politics – the party that’s “out” always has the big solution – but the problems are always much bigger than the simplifications that are presented …

  19. seweatherman1 says:

I just listened to the injury report from Fox, and it does not sound good at all. We are going to have some guys step up Sunday for sure!

  20. strandoftds says:

Yeah, it looks like the only for sure player playing is WR Brandon Lloyd, everyone else is questioable for a game time decision. Talk about bogus!

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

The Vols and the Gators in the Swamp tomorrow at 3:30.GO VOLS!!!!!

    T.G.I.F.

  22. royalbroncofan1 says:

strand – only 46 are active for gameday from 53 man squad, so if JJ is activated, another player will be de-activated.

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

WieminCA……Then how would we fix the biggest problem of all,the QB?

  24. BeastFromEast92 says:

I agree with strand about Ball, one hurdle into the endzone and some people act like he is a good RB,I personally think he SUCKS!!!

  25. strandoftds says:

Oh, OK, thanks Royal. I thought someone had to be cut if we activate a player from the PS.

  26. strandoftds says:

    Ball has bad hands bro.

  27. Mustang says:

I do hope Ball breaks out by some miracle this week… Moreno messed me over for yet another year in a Fantasy League, and Ball was the best RB pick-up I could find left.

  28. seweatherman1 says:

Lloyd is “limited-questionable” so he is iffy at best. The only bad thing about all of these “questionable” means just one wrong move and they could be out for a while. I would love to see them all on the field, but, if it means that they could injure themselves more seriously by taking the chance and playing before completely healed, that to me is just asking for trouble. I am sure not one of them wants to sit out but it may be for the better if they did. Some others will just have to step up.

  29. strandoftds says:

A little less than a hour ago John Clayton of ESPN said that Lloyd practice today and is proable for sunday. I`m only going by what I heard from him. It`s bazzare if Fox says Lloyd is Questioable which is more accurite since he`s our HC.

  30. BeastFromEast92 says:

rbf1,if you wanna see a good QB watch the Vols/Gators game Tyler Bray broke 2 of Peyton Mannings records last week, which was at least 2 td passes in 8 straight games, the guy is just a sophmore, the other record is he has thrown at least 100 yds to 2 different WRs in the same game,2 straight games!

    his stats thru 2 games:51-65-78.5%-698 yds-7tds-0 ints-3 sacks

    he is 6’6 210 lbs.

    new blog

  31. royalbroncofan1 says:

BFE – I did watch him for a little while last weekend. Vols looked real good moving the ball up and down the field. Bray looks like he’s a gamer!!

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

We’ve not played SEC caliber teams, but we were only favored by 4 points over Cincinatti,it turned out 45-23,Bray had 405 yds and 4 tds o ints.

    Yeah he’s a gamer,he also has 2 great WRs:
    Hunter had 10 catches for 157 yards,Rodgers had 10 catches for 100 yards,vsCincy!

  33. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Bray QB-51-65-78.5%-698 yds-7 tds-0 ints-3 sacks-5th in nation!
    204.2 rating!

    Hunter WR-16 catches 302 yds 18.9 avg-2 tds-3rd in the nation!

    Rodgers WR-15 catches 200 yds 13.3 avg 3 tds-26th in the nation!

btw Andrew Luck is rated 20th in the nation.
Kellen Moore is ranked 24th in the nation.

  34. WieminCA says:

I guarantee you, contrary to “popular” opinion, QB is NOT our most pressing problem …
