Free Agency Update

March 5th, 2009 - 12:50pm by Adam Zinser

Things have definitely slowed down since the first couple of days of free agency, but there are still plenty of players joining new teams or re-signing with their old ones.

But first, let’s recap what the Broncos have done. The team has signed 10 free agents thus far, beginning with the All-Pro Brian Dawkins. Next came Correll Buckhalter, Jabar Gaffney and Lonie Paxton. A day after that saw Andra Davis, Renaldo Hill and Darrell Reid come to Denver. Tuesday brought Andre’ Goodman and Ronnie Fields, and yesterday the team signed LaMont Jordan.

Now, onto the rest of the NFL.

Most recently, the big news is that the Cowboys have released wide receiver Terrell Owens. What do y’all think about this move by team owner Jerry Jones?

Yesterday, the Ravens and Ray Lewis were able to reach a deal that will keep the All-Pro linebacker in Baltimore. They also added former Vikings Pro Bowl center Matt Birk.

After testing the free agent market and talking with the 49ers, Kurt Warner has signed a two-year deal to return to the Arizona Cardinals.

With wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh leaving the Bengals to join the Seattle Seahawks, the Bengals signed former Jets receiver Laveranues Coles to a four-year deal. Cincinnati also re-signed running back Cedric Benson.

Free agent cornerback Jabari Greer has found a new home with the New Orleans Saints, who were also able to re-sign receiver Devery Henderson.

With the Bengals expected to sign quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan, the 49ers have brought in former Chiefs QB Damon Huard. San Francisco also picked up former Redskins defensive end Demetric Evans.

Phillip Buchanon was one of the big free agent names at cornerback, but he’s no longer on the market after signing on with the Detroit Lions.

The Giants have added a number of big names to their defense, signing former Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty, former Seahawks defensive tackle Rocky Bernard and former Falcons linebacker Michael Boley. They most recently added help at safety by signing former Houston Texan C.C. Brown.

It looked for a while like cornerback Drayton Florence, who spent 2008 with the Jaguars, might return to his old team of the San Diego Chargers. Instead, he has signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Safety Jim Leonhard, formerly a Baltimore Raven, has joined old teammate Bart Scott by signing with the New York Jets.

The Dolphins added to their offensive line by picking up free agent center Jake Groves.

Running back Derrick Ward visited with a number of teams, but in the end, it was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that landed the former New York Giant.

After losing Albert Haynesworth to the Skins, the Tennessee Titans added depth along the defensive line by signing former Bucs defensive tackle Jovan Haye. They also got help at receiver by signing former Steeler Nate Washington.

Another big name at cornerback, Ron Bartell, didn’t stay on the open market for too long. He has re-signed with the St. Louis Rams.

Defensive tackle Colin Cole signed a five-year deal with the Seahawks rather than re-join the Packers.

After trading away Sage Rosenfels to the Vikings, the Texans were in need of a backup to Matt Schaub. They found their man in former Lion Dan Orlovsky.

And the Buccaneers were able to reach a deal to keep receiver Michael Clayton around for five more years.

First, glad to see we got some veteran defensive guys… I have really high hopes and expectations already for our defense this year with the signing of Dawkins alone. I can’t stress it enough how much help we need there hopefully Dawkins will bring some light into that locker room and have a positive impact on everyone – coaches, players of all kinds. I’m just really excited that we got some strong experienced leaders on defense with Champ & Dawkins. Now all we need is for our QB and a few offensive guys to start leading this team mainly Cutler of course… to name names Marshall really needs to grow up. They are young but full of potential and bursting with talent… if they can figure out how to be an effective leader at their age they’ll have such bright and successful careers. I’m hoping Dawkins can influence Cutler in the right way to be the leader of the offense. We need that really bad!! I’ll always have faith, even when the coaches test me like they have been. Them little stinkers!!!

Saw the Owens cut coming… I knew they wouldn’t stick with him for too long… as long as he doesn’t come here, I don’t care what they do with him. Talk about an ego!!

Hahahahaha, can’t stop laughing that someone actually picked up Huard… way to go 49ers. hahahahaha, now that’s funny. The guy couldn’t do diddly-squat here in KC, gee I wonder why they let him go and someone else actually picked him up. My sides are gonna split!!! :D

    With faith…

Thanks for the new post Adam,
    question
Why haven’t we seen anything posted on the signings of Kenny Peterson, J.J. Arrington, and Chris Simms? Do those contracts have to be ok’d through The NFL? and if so are they just over whelmed with contracts?

    monodono –

The team just announced the signings of Arrington and Simms, and it’s on the front of DenverBroncos.com.

As for Peterson, I haven’t heard anything about that.

As to the last part of your question, all contracts must be approved by the NFL before they can become official, and then the team can officially announce them.

Are you kidding me SuperBowlBoundBroncos????? Huard isn’t better than a bag of hammers. God I hope you’re just trying to be funny because now I really can’t stop laughing. Huard better than Cutler… what are you smoking?? hahahahahahahahahahaha… HA!!

    Thanks Adam,
Wow I post and go to work, and then The Broncos make the announcements. So The Broncos are just trying to stay between the lines.

Here is an update of the New players.
    Arrington, J.J. RB 5′ 9″ 212 26
    Bergen, Adam TE 6′ 4″ 267 25
    Buckhalter, Correll RB 6′ 0″ 217 30
    Davis, Andra LB 6′ 1″ 250 30
    Dawkins, Brian S 6′ 0″ 210 35
    Fields, Ronnie DT 6′ 2″ 315 27
    Gaffney, Jabar WR 6′ 1″ 200 28
    Goodman, Andre’ CB 5′ 10″ 190 30
    Hill, Renaldo S 5′ 11″ 205 30
    Jordan, LaMont RB 5′ 10″ 230 30

    Simms, Chris QB 6′ 4″ 220 28
    pending NFL aproval:

Right now The Broncos have 63 players on Their Roster 64 if the Peterson deal is approved. With 9 picks in the Draft that makes 73 players.

Adam, How much cap space do The Broncos need to save for 9 Draft picks? and How much do they have, sya after the Peterson deal goes through? assumeing it will.

Adam is there a limit on how many players a TEAM can have going into Training Camp, and when do the cut downs begin?

There are a couple of Broncos UFA’s I would like to see re signed, that are still available.
I thought Paymah, Karl CB 6′ 0″ 195 26 played as well as could be expected with out D Line and Safety help.
I also think Putzier, Jeb TE 6′ 4″ 256 29 is worth another look.
I also like Bell, Tatum RB 5′ 11″ 213 27 but I don’t think He willget a chance to compete. I wish Him luck in the future.

What do you guy’s think of these players?

I just read The Broncos are takeing a look at UFA nickle CB Travis Daniels 6-1/195 5th yr out of Cleveland to replace now UFA Karl Paymah 5-11/204 5th yr. To me this is a down grade, I know Coach McDaniels is just looking for depth but Paymah is the better choice and He is said to be visiting Baltimore. Please reevaluate this decision.

  14. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

The new mock drafts have us taking BJ Raji at #12. I hope it’s true, but thinking of having Malauga go to the Chargers is not good. I think he’ll be another Shawne Merriman in a couple of years.

  15. monodono says:

Here is my lates mock Defense,

LOLB Marcus Freeman 6-1/235/ SR- Ohio State (3rd rd Draft)
    LOLB Bailey, Boss 6′ 3″ 232 29 7th yr
    LOLB/ROLB/SS Woodyard, Wesley 6′ 1″ 230 22 2nd yr
    RILB Williams, D.J. 6′ 1″ 240 26 6th yr
    RILB/FB Larsen, Spencer 6′ 2″ 240 24 2nd yr

    LILB Haggan, Mario 6′ 3″ 263 28 7th yr
    S
    FS Dawkins, Brian 6′ 0″ 210 35 15th yr
    FS Hill, Renaldo 5′ 11″ 205 30 10th yr
    SS Barrett, Josh 6′ 2″ 225 24 2nd yr
SS William Moore 6-1/223/ SR- Missouri ( 2nd rd Draft)
    CB
    CB Bailey, Champ 6′ 0″ 192 30 11th yr
    CB Goodman, Andre’ 5′ 10″ 190 30 9th yr
    CB Bell, Josh 5′ 11″ 177 23 2nd yr
    CB Paymah, Karl 6′ 0″ 195 26 5th yr UFA

Obviously We cant have 4 NT, and 9 LB’s and Raji in the first rd at #12 is a little far fetched, but Moore is the best Safety available and He is projected around the 48th pick and Freeman is also projected to be around the 79th pick these two could really help.
Then maybe we trade down and pick up Ron Brace in the second.
Food for thought. I also like Paymah over Travis Daniels out of Cleveland which The Broncos may be looking at. What do you guy’s think about tradeing down the 12th pick?

monodono you forgot derral reid. I agree that we need to resign Paymah he did a great job for how bad our D was in general lol.

i think we should draft maualuga cushing or laurenitus 1st round over tryin for Raji i think hes not gunna be what we are hopin for i think we should draft D line in the 2nd round. safety should wait till 5/6th round cause were pretty good with dawkins and Barrett. just my oppinion
