Foxworth to Falcons

September 2nd, 2008 - 9:11am by Adam Zinser

The Broncos have traded cornerback Domonique Foxworth to the Atlanta Falcons for an undisclosed pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Shanahan first mentioned the possibility of the trade after Monday’s practice, mentioning that there were several teams he had in mind.

Foxworth spent the first three years of his career with the Broncos after they selected him in the third round of the 2005 draft. Since then, he has started 20 games at various positions in the defensive backfield.

they must have a plan for next years draft to give up a good player.

  2. VABroncoguy says:

This is great news…I understand he does a lot for the community but that has nothing to do with his terrible play on the field. I will be at the game when Denver plays Atlanta and I hope BMarsh goes for 200 on his candy well you know the rest

  3. mstarnes9999 says:

    According to CBS4 Denver….

CBS4 has learned that the Denver Broncos have traded Domonique Foxworth to the Atlanta Falcons. The Broncos will receive a 7th round draft pick for the 4th year defensive back. Foxworth is in the final year of his current contract and if he were to resign with Atlanta after this season, the Broncos would also receive a 6th round draft pick. Foxworth was chosen in the 3rd round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Broncos. In his 3 years with Denver, he started 18 games. Last season, he was primarily used as a “nickel back” in passing situations. — CBS4Denver

I think we should have at least gotten a 6th rounder with the possibility of a 5th rounder.

  4. HOGblog says:

    Adam…

Media is reporting a 7th round, possibly 6th in 09 if he resigns as a FA w/Falcons next year.

This is very dissappointing! Foxworth was a class act, but his time here was pretty much done. I hope he gets an opportunity to start for the ‘dirty birds”.

However, this exchange for a 7th rd pick is embarrasing. It reaks to me of roster spot for Marshall. Although most Bronco Fans were praying for the rumored trade between Den/Detroit (Foxworth for Cody). Because with Powell lost for season, we need bulk and youth on the DL.

Anyway, just a few thoughts of mine. How about you? Did we get way too little? Did Shanny set the bar way to low? Is this more a roster spot move for Marshsll or perhaps another OL, i.e. Gandy?

  5. HOGblog says:

    BTW…Adam,

Can you explain the roster listing for Larsen as a FB? He’s no FB! What’s with that? He’s too talented to as a LB…and not half as good or big as Hillis. Both are rookies, but one played football at an All American level with one of the most prolific running teams in the NCAa, and the other one did not? Guess which one?

  6. Hesky says:

Jack Williams’ performance must have been the final push over the edge Shanahan needed to make the decision. But a 7th rounder? What a ripoff.

I’m just glad i have faith in Paymah & Williams :)

  7. Adam Zinser says:

HOGblog: Your reports on a 7th rounder are speculation at this point. It was an undisclosed draft pick. As such, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on rumors. But as is always the case, Head Coach Mike Shanahan did what he believes is in the best interest of the Broncos. It has much less to do with roster spots and much more to do with the fact that there are a lot of talented players in the defensive backfield. Shanahan, and all the DBs, feel this is a situation where there is so much talent that the team simply couldn’t keep everyone. They are all happy with Karl Paymah and Jack Williams.

As for Larsen at FB, he has shown the versatility to play both. The team has used him at both spots during camp, and he looked good. Shanahan said after practice yesterday that they will continue to use him at both positions, so just because it says “FB” next to his name right now doesn’t mean that is where he will exclusively play. And with Cecil Sapp on Reserve/Injured, it makes sense to continue using Larsen in both roles. As for the size, Larsen is 6’2″, 240-pounds to Hillis’s 6’1″, 250-pounds.

  8. DBfansince86 says:

Maybe Coach Shanahan liked him so much he wanted to give him a chance to have a better career somewhere else, he wasn’t gonna start and with the emergence of Jack Williams they probably thought we can afford to get rid of him…

  9. b4life says:

Wow i really liked Foxworth as a player and as a person off the field he was great in the comunity. I wish him the best i just hope denver got more than just a 7th round pick for such a good player.

  10. Wolverine83 says:

Here is to getting something for him while we still can, and to Jack Williams being our next nickel back by week 4 or 5… :)

  11. dwillwilliams27 says:

I am really upset with the Foxworth trade, he was some what of the last piece of Darrent Williams because they were so close as friends. A 7th round pick for a player that plays all over the D is a ripoff I hope its a higher pick then that

    Good Luck D. Fox

  12. broncoryan says:

the guy could not make plays at all on the field…watch any highlights of him on the field…and there usually bad for the broncos….I say good riddence

  13. Gnarlybroncos says:

I can not believe they traded Foxworth. He was a quality guy and a leader in the lockerroom. They should have traded Paymah. Paymah looked horrible in the preason and go beat on almost every play. Go back and watch the game against the cardinals. They never threw to Foxworths side. They always threw to paymah and complete almost everthing. He got beat all game against the 1st and 2nd teams. This is a joke. My guess is J Will is going to start at the nickel and paymah will be the 4th CB because he sucks. I bet they let him go to free agency after this year. Also they have better got at least a 3rd round pick in return for him because he will be their starting CB.

  14. columbusOHbronco says:

not to sure about this move and reasons are. champ and dre are injury prone and williams is still a rookie and paymah sucks. if and only if we are stock piling picks for next year to use them to trade up and get a better FIRST ROUND PICK them im all for it. but to have extra 7th or 6th round picks for a guy we drafted in the 3rd round is stupid. but i do think that we need to go after a high profile middle line backer or running back next year and i dont think we can get that with the pick we will end up with. becasue we will be a playoff team this year. any word on boss injury

  15. HOGblog says:

Thank you Adam…On top of things as always!!!!

I actually knew the size differences between Hillis and Larsen. Stating 2x the size was used to emphasize a point…i,e, hyperbole!

Im still confused as to the draftpick, and I understand your apprehension about discussing it, as you probably do know, and I’ll bet it is a 7th rnd contingency pick. But…I hope Im wrong, and I hope we clear roster, because we have to make room for Marshall or another OLineman.

    Hogblog

  16. Gami3it says:

Like someone said, it came down to a point where they could probably get more offers for Dominique instead of paymah since Dominique is better. But if we got a 7th rounder which i doubt Shannahan would be crazy enough to do….Then we might as well have traded paymah

But then again, Dominique and Jack Williams in the nickle and dime…It would only be a matter of time before coaches put Jack over Dominique and Dominique’s talents will be wasted as a dime back…anyway…NFL is a business…Good Luck out there Dominique

  17. TU_HurricaneDB says:

Multiple media outlets have said Fox is gone for a 7th rounder. I believe in MS and know that he is going to do what he believes is right for the team but to give a 3rd round pick up for anything lower than a 4th/5th is crazy.

Why are we giving quality players away for players that might not make our team (Fox made it, John Smith from the 09 7th round might be cut). An iteresting point to bring up is, if there were 6 teams interested in Fox couldn’t we have received more than a 7th.

I just hope this doesn’t tuen out to be another Deltha situation where he leaves Den and becomes a Pro Bowler all for nothing.

  18. papacy808 says:

Dre Bly is the one that’s over rated he should of gone. Check the highlites…

  19. Just D says:

    I agree with Gnarlybroncos,
the cards attack paymah and not foxworth. They should have also considered that champ and dre are getting older and the 2 best backup on the squad are foxworth and williams. I hope he did get a 3rd or 4th round pick. Anything else would be embarrasing.

  20. Dr. Doom says:

Lets not forget what Shanahan has done with 6th and 7th round picks…(Nalen, TD, Shannon Sharpe) Most the time they turn out better than our 2nd and 3rd rounders.

  21. Dr. Doom says:

Also we must all keep in mind that Foxworth wanted to be a starter, and since he can’t get that here so Shanahan has allowed him to play his best somewhere else. I dont think this was a front office motivated roster move.

  22. McCaffrey#1 says:

I would have liked to see atleast a 5th rd pick for foxy. I am all for stockpiling draft picks but a higher one would have been nice. I do like j williams so i was in favor of trading foxy. Im gonna have to sit on this trade for a day or two before i come up with a verdict.

  23. Finkman says:

WOW! a 7th round draft pick??? Should of at least been a 5th round pick! I also like the kid J. Williams, he has proven he wants to be on this football team. I’m not as happy though with a 7th round pick for Foxy! Well come on Monday night, it’s a 10:15 p.m. start for us here in the east. Kick the crap out of the raiders!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Orange_Crush18 says:

Foxy’s contract is over this year. Trading him now ensures we get something for him now. At the end of the season, he would’ve been gone and we wouldn’t have recieved anything. Although I would have like more for him, this is a good move as we at least recieved something for him.

  25. Mountain_Man_60 says:

    I think there’s a blog curse.

    Amon Gordon = cut
    Ted Sundquist = fired
    Andrew Mason = laid off
    Domonique Foxworth = traded

Even the two cheerleaders who blogged aren’t here anymore. Probably left voluntarily though.

I guess the message is that Sacco and Miles had better watch their backs.

  26. JMB says:

    Hey Foxy!

We will miss U BIG TIME!! You have been a class act on and off the field. Good Luck but not against the Broncos!

Stay strong Bronco fans, we are going to be real good this year!

    JMB

  27. trav7delic says:

Its sad to see Foxworth go but on the other hand the Falcons are a team where he could become a starter and thats where he belongs. Im sure thats what Shanahan explained to him before the trade. Although i cant wait to see cutler light him up. And as for the seventh round draft pick, let Shanahan work his magic.

  28. dlmyers says:

Guys, remember that Foxworth and Paymah only got 5th level offer contenders when they were designated at the start of this year. Now I do not believe that Goodman and Shanahan would flat trade for a 7th. Remember the new is conditional, lets wait and see. Also a 7th from Atlanta is like a 6th or 5th.
Now Foxworth; Broncos play man-to-man about 75% of the time. Foxworth is an excellent cover two corner but can not play man-to-man (reacts too slow). Watch the AZ game and you can see this on four glaring plays. He was at least a step away in reacting.

  29. Cut2Marsh46 says:

Foxy will never be more than an average nickelback. He gets burned way too much and he doesn’t even go against the number one, once in a while the number two guy. Imagine him lining up against any number one reciever in the league…..it’s not a pretty sight. I love the guy and I would love to see him prove me wrong, but he just doesn’t have what it takes for all you guys that think he could be a starting corner. Jack Williams at the nickel? I agree 100%, Paymah will probably have it to start but JW will be the nickel before week 6.

  30. Mountain_Man_60 says:

Think of it like a baseball trade at the deadline. If you’re not going to re-sign the guy after the season, why not deal him and get something. As opposed to letting him go in the offseason and getting nothing. Which could happen if the Broncos don’t get a compensatory pick from next year’s free agency period since it’s based on the total number and quality of players coming and going.

Of course, trav says let Shanahan work his “magic” with the seventh-round pick. I guess that comes if he uses it to trade up.

The seventh-rounders since 2000 haven’t done much. Jarious Jackson, Leroy Fields, Chris Young, Monsanto Pope, Clint Mitchell, Ahmaad Galloway, Matt Mauck, Brandon Miree, Bradlee Van Pelt. No seventh-rounders from 2005 to 2007. Can’t blame the Broncos because only Pope was worth anything of those names.

In general, the team is better at undrafted picks than seventh-rounders. No wonder they traded out of the seventh round three straight years.

As for this year’s seventh-rounders, high on Hillis, but can not judge now. Too early.

  31. VABroncoguy says:

what game were you people watching URBAN manhandled Foxworth on a consistent basis…I mean he straight mollywhopped him. This is JEREMY URBAN the fourth best receiver. If you watch any game, you will see that Foxworth just never made plays. No matter how good a guy he is off the field, this is a football team, not the Red Cross.

  32. Chris Wade says:

Foxworth stated something to the effect of “should be his year to start” at the beginning of the season. Well he’s not starting . Take what you can get and move on.

  33. imready says:

Guys who complain a lot usually don’t last long around coach Shanny. Altough he was pretty good a tight coverage, he didn’t break up a lot of passes. Good luck to him in Atlanta.

  34. broncojerry says:

I have to agree with the majority of the ppl on here; he was a step or two too slow, couldn’t cover anybody one-on-one, got burned consistantly. Wish him luck in Atlanta and let’s get this season started. Go Broncos Beat the Raiders

  35. dare2bme says:

I think Broncos fans are attached to the idea of Foxworth, not the reality. He was, as VABronc said, consistently attacked in the Arizona game, and lost his position because of his own play. Jack Williams outshined him and one of them had to go. Our roster is arranged differently than it has been in previous years, so there are fewer corner positions available.

He blogged, seemed sincere in his community outreach, provided some insight into his own life and the Broncos organization, but he wasn’t producing on the field. I rooted for him to succeed and wish he would have improved to the point of supplanting Dre because I don’t trust Bly at all. Instead, he floundered in mediocrity. He will have another opportunity to become an excellent corner and I believe he has the ability to do so…it just wasn’t going to happen for the Broncos.

Good luck Foxy! We’ll see you in ATL.

  36. bmarsh111 says:

dre bly was/is our worst corner. the guy is awful

  37. OrangeCrush53 says:

What do you all mean atleast we got something for him? I suppose finding a penny on the ground is better than nothing too huh? A 7th rounder is as close to nothing as you can get. Anything less and what do you have?

I’d rather have a little depth at DB for one more year than a 7th round pick in ’09. What do we have now if Champ or Bly go down? Who starts and who’s at the Nickle? And who’s left on the bench if both Williams and Pymah are forced into action?

I suppose we could always sign Tyrone Pool for the 3rd time huh? Sheeez.

If Shanny was so fond of Foxy he could have let him play out is contract and sign with a new team (of his choice) in ’09. Oh but wait that would cost us a 7th round pick in ’09!!!!

Everyone dissing his play needs to remember he has 22 starts, he’s far from chump change.

  38. sharp_shepherd says:

A 7th round pick? I didn’t think he was all that good but he’s better than a 7th round pick. They should have gotten a 4th or 5th out of him at least.

  39. GO CUTLER says:

we got hillis as a 7th rounder pretty good pick . go broncos

  40. Gnarlybroncos says:

VABroncoguy and dare2bme both need to go back and watch the Cardinals game. Foxy rarly got beat in that game and if he did he made the tackle right away. Urban was blowing by Paymah. Go back and watch the drive by Leinart. He completed almost all of his passes to Paymahs side witch was to Urban. You guys need to check your facts. Also we should have recieved at least a 4th rnd pick. We would most likely have recieved a compensatory pick from the league in the draft when he left in FA next year. This was a really bad move if we only recieve a 6th or 7th. I would not be mad at all if they would have traded paymah for a 6th or 7th

  41. bmarsh111 says:

    ohhhhhhhhhhh know! we suck again!

  42. d-unit says:

Lots of people on here making themselves sound like ignorant idiots.. With this crack team of analyst/knowitall/bloggers why do the Broncos need an extensive and well paid staff of talent evaluators? Players get traded. Welcome to the NFL.

Foxy is by all means a classy guy. Very positive in the Denver community as well as the NFLPA. But have you seen him in coverage? Have you seen his stats over his 3 years in the league? 3rd round draft pick who is shown to be declining. While he’s gotten better at tackling, he’s never been a threat on the ball. I’m not even paid to analyze the team, but I do have eyes, and I see Fox with a big target on his jersey getting beat for 10+ yards at a time, every time. You do the math.
Use your brain, you know that thing you hear rattling around inside your skull.. Fox fancies himself to be a #1 or 2 CB in the NFL. Well unfortunately for him he’s sitting behind Champ Bailey and Chump Bly. The Broncos have very little leverage in trading him for value(like a 3rd). His stats are weak. His game film is weak. He’s UFA after this season. Good for the team for getting something for him while they can. Oh and by the way all you knowitall cry babies.. What is being reported is that its a trade for a 7th rounder with an additional 6th if he’s signed to ATL’s roster after the season. ie: 2 picks! Please stop with the default reaction of bi*ching and whining at every opportunity and just start BELIEVING!! Believe in Shanny and believe in the NEW DENVER BRONCOS!! Sure we’ve still got issues but we are moving more and more in the right direction everyday.
LET’S GO BRONCOS! FOOTBALL IS BACK!!! :D :D:D

  43. broncoryan says:

getting that foxworthless off the field was one of the best moves this season…..hats off to shanny!

  44. shawno85 says:

This is very disappointing to me. I always like Foxworth and without Bly and Bailey here, he would definitely be a starter. Paymah and Williams are great players, but Foxworth is versatile and a good character off of the field. I am sad to see him go, but happy that he has a better chance at starting with another team.

I think things soured when Bly was brought in to replace the late, great Darrent Williams. They didn’t even consider Foxworth for a starting spot, and I think he realized right then and there that his career could be more successful elsewhere.

He’ll be a starter in Atlanta. But when the Broncos come, expect Marshall to have a career day against him. Haha, even after praising him in this comment too…

  45. HOGblog says:

I truly believe some are confusing community service with football skills. While both arent mutually exclusive, Foxworth was a much better humanitarian than a player. Before you hit “reply” and respond back to this statement, stop and think for just a second. Think back to the 2nd and 3rd string WR’s/QBs that were consistently getting behind Foxworth. He rarely stayed up with them. He’s plays a soft defense, giving up way too much cushion…and why? It’s because he lacks the agility and speed to keep up with them. His only hope is to grab onto them and drag them downAFTER the catch. So thats why he is reportedbly unhappy. He just must face the reality that he’s never going to be a starting CB. He’s a replacement/backup/fill-in. Hey, it’s a living? And not a bad one. But one we just could no longer afford. We already have a Dre Bly on our team.

  46. sess44 says:

I hope we got kissed when we got screwed on that deal. I’m usually the one who defends Shanahan for everything he does, but WOW coach. Was he really that bad? I know his pre-season was a little rough, but remember all of the big plays he made as a rookie alone. Ask the Eagles about Foxy picking McNabb off in the end zone.

You’re going to be missed Foxy. Hopefully the door is still open for your return.

  47. dare2bme says:

Gnarls – Man, I was watching the game, in fact I watched it 3 times. I’m not saying I didn’t see Paymah get beat, but I think you’re wrong.

I like Foxy as a person, and I wanted him to become a better player – he didn’t.

Whether your analysis is right or not, Foxy was beat repeatedly. I really don’t care if he immediately made the tackle, it’s his job to prevent the catch and in many cases prevent the throw. Obviously, whether you like it or not, the coaching staff agrees with me and others – he wasn’t as good as you think.

They get paid to make the decision and I agree with them. I don’t always agree with Shanny and Co., but I think they were dead right this time. Foxy wasn’t getting it done.

As for Paymah, I don’t like him either, but if I had to choose one of them, I’d take Carl. Once again, it seems as though the organization agrees with me here.

I wish Foxy the best and will root for his success in Atlanta, but he didn’t get it done or he’d still be here.

As for all the complaints about what we got, I have no idea what you guys think determines value, and I have no idea what actually determines value. however, if it is anything like American society-at-large, it is a market economy and the market wasn’t very good for a mediocre/backup/nickel/dime corner with excellent character. He obviously hadn’t lived up to his draft grade or he wouldn’t be gone. I’d love to have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th for him…damn that market economy!

  48. rickdiggler says:

Good I like Foxy as a person but his play on the field was less than satisfactory. That dont cut it with Shanahan. He didnt show he wanted to be on the team this year. Our secondary needed some changes anyway.

  49. RayRay, Razor Ramone says:

Dang again, i dont know what the Broncos are doing! True he is not a SHUTDOWN or STARTING CORNORBACK but he is better than a 7th round or 6th round pick! but, i understand why they did it! i wish they would sign more people off waivers! Bring back Delta!!!!! BUt we’ll see! im hoping but still wandering around the idea of how good we really are! but Broncosfrlife no matter wat!

  50. DrAwkward says:

Hahaha. Sorry man, but giving up Foxworth for a “roster spot for Marshall” is priceless. That’s like getting rid of Jamie Winborn to free up space for Jay Cutler. If anything, his spot was carved in stone long ago.
