Four Signed to Practice Squad

August 31st, 2008 - 3:34pm by Gray Caldwell

On Sunday, the Broncos signed Josh Barrett, Mitch Erickson, Darrell Hackney and Steven Harris to their practice squad.

Barrett is a rookie from Arizona State University, a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He played in all four Denver preseason games in 2008, ranking fourth on the club in defensive tackles and tying for third in special-teams stops.

Erickson is an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota State University. He appeared in all four preseason games for Denver in 2008 following a collegiate career in which he received first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press as a senior at SDSU.

Hackney is a second-year quarterback out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He spent the final eight games of the 2007 season on the team’s active roster, and played in all four preseason games in 2008. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, good for a 94.7 quarterback rating.

Harris is another second-year player who attended the University of Florida. Harris, who saw time in all four preseason contests for Denver in 2008, played four games for the Broncos in 2007 and totaled six tackles.

The Broncos may have up to eight players on their practice squad.

Hooray! The two I most wanted, Hackney and Barrett, both cleared waivers. Very exciting news.

I am glad Barrett is on the practice squad. He will have a year to develop now. I also heard that John Lynch was released. I should not have left Denver where he would probably have a job. I just can’t help but feel that he got what he deserved.

NICE!!!!! Been uneasy with Barrett left out there. Great work from the club again! Lynch is a sell out and got what he deserved!! Very good day! Haven’t looked at the other practice squad player avl. yet but RB Chad Simpson is a little Jones Drew 5’8 230 and fast…also Dre Moore would be a great pick up for the practice squad! Fingers still crossed

  8. JayCutler4MVP says:

yeh i want dre moore too.. projected 3rd-4th round pick but we shud pick him up

  9. atwaters da man says:

Put punter Sam on the squad!! At worst case we will get a draft pick for him!

Ray lewis’s brother got cut by the cowboys. He showed some signs of being a strong runner and the it is in the DNA : )

  12. Dr. Doom says:

Cant any team in the leauge sign players from any other theams practice squads??? Do Greg Eslinger Domenik Hixon ring any bells to any of you?
Both were playeres that got signed to the practice squad and both were signed by other teams midway through last season

JayCutler4MVP says “Barrett, the next bob sanders “, a little OTT. Love Barrett, but still question why he is on PS. Plus no one claimed him. But Rodney Rodgers developed from our PS.
Just love Erickson OL making PS. He beat out Alexander, Gandy, and played some tackle.
Remember guys, any team can claim these players. But they have to put them on their 53.
JayCutler4MVP also says “want dre moore “. Remember we had plenty of chanches at him in the draft and he is a two gap player only and had some character issues. NO Thanks
Also remember that you can not trade a player from the PS.

I think the staff did a great job with this years draft, free agency, and the final roster. A lot of rookies made it easy to decide the cuts, with great performances. It will be interesting to see how Carlton Powell does when healthy.

way to go for josh and hackney…

is there anyway sapp will be back in the roster??

glad to see barret made the practice squad. he has lots of potential.

  17. b4life says:

Im glad to see Barret made the practice squad but he can be signed by any team, im not happy to see Glenn Martinez go the guy had hands and could run good routs if i remeber right he laid out for a ball and almost got torn in half. I hope no one signs Glenn and he can be signed again.

  18. theOrangeNblue says:

Was looking forward to see C. Russell make the 53. Had a great game against arizona. Alridge looked very good too. Could have been a nice speedy back to have.

  19. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

We keep Barrett and Hackney. Thus, this was an effective day! I’ll bet Lynch regrets leaving now, he should have known the Patriots are jerks and wouldn’t treat him well.

  20. TU_Hurricanedb says:

I like Barrett, I think he can improve and make the roster down the line so ease up dlmyers. Barrett has the size and speed to be an intimidating safety. I like we are keeping a QB who knows our offense just in case. One guy I would like if he wasn’t signed by another team is Chad Jackson WR from Florida, there were rumors we were going to draft him in 05 before NE traded up and took him. Wouldn’t hurt to PS either him or Colbert to give us added depth.

I agree with another who said Lattimore would be a nice addition as well.

  21. TU_Hurricanedb says:

Sorry Chad Jackson was in the 06 draft

  22. TU_Hurricanedb says:

Not sure it’s true but we are supposed to be placing the following guy on PS, PJ Pope – RB (5’9″ 205lbs Bowling Green State). Denver is also interested in Andy Alleman – OG (6’4″ 310 Akron)* Miami just claimed him though.

And it also looks like Rod Rogers might be headed to the PS rumors indicate Den is interested in Calvin Lowery – FS (5’11″ 200lbs 3rd yr from Penn St). Again these are rumors I have seen so some might not play out.

  23. Cut2Marsh46 says:

I would love to see us get Chad Jackson. That would be a great pick up. Lattimore more would be a little more of a wildcard but would like to see him too. Not too sure if Colbert is eligible for the PS. I think he has been on an NFL active roster too long. Not sure exactly how it works but pretty sure Colbert doesn’t have the option of being on the PS.

  24. Sicknessfl says:

I would have liked to see Hackney make the 53 man roster. I think Ramsey is over rated.

I hope Steven Harris pans out. I love to see Gators on this team.

I don’t really care who we sign to the practice squad, but he need to develop a quality WR. Yeah, Royal looks promising, but we have such a huge drop off on the outside after Brandon.

  25. dave888259 says:

If someone tried to sign Barrett, I think the Broncos might call him up to the active roster to prevent it. But honestly, I don’t think anyone is likely to do that. He’s an amazing athlete with a lot of potential, but he’s still really raw and has a history of injury, so I’m not sure there’s a team out there that wants to gamble a precious roster spot on him being NFL ready at this point.
As for Chad Jackson, I was all about picking him up in the 06 draft, but he’s been really, really disappointing as an NFL player up to this point, and blew out his ACL either last year or his rookie year. I tend to not put much faith in WR’s with bad knees.
