The team made official on Tuesday what Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced on Monday. Peyton Hillis was placed on the Reserve/Injured list today with a hamstring injury, and running back Cory Boyd was upgraded from the practice squad to the active roster.
The team also waived safety Calvin Lowry on Tuesday, signing guard Pat Murray off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad to fill the roster spot.
Boyd, signed by Denver to its practice squad on Nov. 4, is a rookie out of the University of South Carolina. He racked up 2,267 rushing yards and 1,303 receiving yards in 46-game career as a Gamecock. He is just the second player in school history to amass 2,000 rushing yards and reel in 100 receptions. He is also just the second player in school history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving.
Hillis, a rookie out of Arkansas, emerged as the Broncos’ go-to back after injuries plagued the backfield early in the season. He leads the team with 343 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. His six total touchdowns (5 rush., 1 rec.) are tied for the team lead with Brandon Marshall.
Murray was originally signed by Green Bay as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007. He played in 41 games with 32 starts at Division II Truman State, earning first-team All-Mid-America honors in 2006.

cut Manuel and we’re getting somewhere. i wanna see safeties of mccree barrett and fox for the rest of the yr. when mccree gets healthy
Who did we signe to the practice squad?
about time lowry was cut! the dude sucked
All I can say is give these new guys a chance. We gave people like Hillis, Clady, Royal, even Cutler and Marshall their fair share of chances and look at they’ve done for us. Who knows… Boyd might just be something special to this team or maybe not.
Carolina is going to give us a run for our money. We just lost our foundation to our new-found running game in Hillis, now we’ll get to see how Boyd and/or Tatum step up in his place. Carolina is going to try and force us to throw the ball alot which Cutler likes to do anyway but we need to keep our running game alive too. The two sides need to be balanced out, we came pretty close to that in the KC game. If they can just continue to play as a TEAM we will be just fine. In addition to that, Cutler needs to continue his long awaited but finally here leadership he’s been showing lately. We really needed a strong leader and we got him!! We have to fight for this win, give it our all and NO turnovers.
Keep believing and Have faith..
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
Look, I know it’s not all of you guys but you people like ‘bronc fan in WA’ need to just shut up.
First of all I don’t see your name on the back of a jersey flying around the field trying to do anything.
Secondly, who are you to judge whether or not someone is any good? Leave it alone already.
Lastly, If Shanahan didn’t think people were good enough for this team, Lowry for example, he wouldn’t have signed him. So when you say some one on this team sucks you are saying Shanny sucks. And saying that is a big mistake. So let it go and quit trying to be who you think you are but who you really arn’t.
One thing I have been really dissapointed about is the supposed starter Selvin Young. Not sure if he was covering up an injury earlier on in the season but he was not running with much/or any gusto at all in the games he did play hence why Pittman and Hall were getting the lion share of the carries and more production. I thought he would be the man to fill that void and be the next 1000+ yd rusher for Denver… The curse of the RB’s has been good and bad.. Good – Andre Hall, Bad – Pittman, Hillis, Young, Aldrige, Torrain… I know Bell will hit the ground running what adds to the pressure is that he only has 3 games to prove his worth.. But I pray to GOD that he runs like he did when hit the 1000+ yd mark last time in Denver…
The Broncos have a HUGE task infornt of them with the double threat of Williams/Stewart.. I thought they would peater out versus TB but was I wrong. A defence which had let in only 1 rushing TD leading into week 13 gave up 4 + over 300 yds rushing. What does work in our favour is that Delhomme is not quiet back to his best but you know what they say about a wounded bull… Do not take the Panthers for granted!!! LETS GO BRONCOS ON 3!!!!!
What I saw last sunday was a aweful display from a great team. And I say great team because it takes a great team to overcome turnover adversities (one which was returned for a td) and come up with the win. We improve so much as we go that we will be scary in playoffs. Ive always been a fan of Bells so I know he can do the job and i look forward to boyd playing. So long lowry. You were a sorry excuse of a safety.
I wish Barrett was activated earlier because he would have been more developed by now. Manuel isnt THAT bad but I look foward to Mccree coming back and expect to see nothing but Mccree, fox, barrett…….and manuel playing the rest of season. GO BRONCOS. Lets get that Championship. Carolina is a mighty test but we gonna do to them what we did to the “red hot Jets”.
Choo choo All board the Boyd train. Dude can flat play some football. I am huge gamecocks fan he torn up when he played. i like thats his big and and has speed. Get yall for the Boyd to be the primary back once the season ends going into the playoffs.
I would like to know more about the guard we signed Pat Murray. The artical said the Broncos signed him off the Seatle practice squad, but how did he get there from Greenbay? How big is he? Is he a pass blocker, run blocker, or pulling guard? What do the Broncos have here?
I wasn’t that impressed with Lowry’s play but he’s young I wish him the best.
I hope C. Boyd does well, but I think Tatum Bell will get the bulk of the calls and I think PJ. Pope will be the active fill in here his ribs should be getting better and that guy’s got POP! This should be a good one two punch. I just hope the O Coaches continue to have the faith in the running game to call the right play’s especially on first down.
TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !
GO BRONCOS! ! !
Thank god Lowry got cut… I feel like everytime he was in the game he was getting scored on… He stunk.
As a life long Bronco fan living in enemy territory (San Diego), I love watching the Broncos work through and gut out game after game. They have had their ups and downs but they just keep plugging along while the rest of the AFC West sinks into their post season blues. I have total faith in Coach Shanahan, Cutler and every rookie and veteran on the team. Nothing is more satisfying then to go to work and bust up into the face of a Charger fan after their team can’t pull together as a team and watch their season come to a slow end while the Broncos keep rolling. I haven’t heard to much about Boyd but Coach Shanahan can turn a water boy into a 1000 yard rusher. Keep rolling Broncos.
Ok, gonna try to make this quick but i have a couple of points to make first.
N4TION, you are a nut, Lowry sucked, he needed to be gone a long time ago. we all knew we had the talent sitting on the bench and have been asking for it all year, glad Barrett finally got his shot and proved us all right.
BRONCOSMADDENCHAMP, you shouldn’t even call yourself a Broncos fan to say you are glad that Hillis got hurt. are you FRICKING nuts. Hillis was a beast and a humble one at that. it’s hard to find players like him this day and age and to say you are glad he got hurt is just plain stupid.
ok, now that i got that out of my system, i agree with elway07, we should not over look the Panthers, yes we have stepped up over the past few weeks but this will be a huge challenge for us. If we can play well against this team and slow down the run then we should win.
Our boys have been playing with alot of heart and our secondary and LB corp has really improved.
I’m excited to see what this Boyd kid can do. hopefully he and Tatum can really hit the ground running on sunday and make this game two dimensional.
once again i’ll be at the game and i’m sure i’ll be getting harrassed by many a Panther fan, but i live for that.
Keeping the Faith
GO BRONCOS!!!!!
shawn723 – well said.
broncosfanmaddenchamp – are you freaking kidding me? How dare you say it’s about time Hillis got injured. I’ve read a fair amount of team/player bashing on this site, but that one takes the cake. You should be ashamed of yourself. First off, and I’m sure most everyone will agree, Hillis is a stud and he deserves to the starter next year. His passion towards the game and “team first” attitude cannot be coached or replaced. Find another team because no true fan wants you here. What you said makes me sick. Go continue to waste your brain cells on madden.
Bronco fans around the world can’t wait to see you back next year Hillis.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!
Shawn723, couldn’t agree with you more.
The opening statement of BRONCOSMADDENCHAMP was the most bonehead statement I’ve ever seen on this site. You gotta be freakin kidding me. Your glad Hillis is hurt. OMG, I’m pulling for Tatum to do well, however, Hillis was special. He is way more powerful than Tatum, had better vision and on 3rd and 1 he could get the one. Tatum still scares me a bit.
Oh, well it is what it is. I am just hoping everyone stays healthy at this point. A healthy running game is necessary to have balance. Carolina is gonna be tough!! I have faith in our Broncos and am eager to see them at 9-5 going into Buffalo. GO Broncos!!!!!!
In my opinion, Hillis is the best back the Broncos have had since T.D. . He put the fear in defenses like no other and there is nothing more effective that a power RB. I sure hope he comes back as strong or stronger next year, there will be no stopping the Broncos. Glad that Shanny was able to pick Boyd, someone he had interest in since the draft should fit into our offense nicely. Hope he is smart and can pick up the blocking scheme quickly. Work your butt off Boyd, we need a strong young beast in the backfield to go deep in the playoffs. Go Broncos!
hey N4ati0n you wanna know somethin? All the people who dissed on Dre Bly week after week heard it from me. And you wanna know why….. its because i knew Bly was a good player under a lot of pressure with Champ out.
Im honest when i say its good that Lowry was cut because he really was useless. If they don’t perform they dont deserve to be paid and playing. Fox and Barrett desrves their chances now and they will earn their time.
So get off my back about being correct a-hole
Well put guys……… BRONCOSMADDENCHAMP is a moron!!!!!!!! Bronco fan? uh, i think not!!!!!!!
I don’t know why everyone is avoiding the subject, but to me it is quite obvious that we need a new training staff. Whoever our phisical trainers are, they don’t have our players in the right kind of shape to go out there and play tough football. I’m guessing that in the offseason Shanny is going to be doing some serious staff turnovers in the training department.
THIS MANY PLAYERS GOING DOWN IS NOT A FREAK OCCURANCE.
OUR TRAINERS NEED TO GO TEACH GYM CLASS IN HIGHSCHOOL
THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN THE NFL
But props to our running back coach. Getting the job done. Keep it up.
21DieHardBroncoFan21, i have read many of your comments and once again you have no clue as to what you are saying. Injuries happen, thats that. there is no way to condition against them, when you get your knee folded backwards or hyperextended, or pull a groin muscle, you can’t help it. no amount of conditioning can help or change that. It’s a freak year with many injuries to one position, Shanny will not be cleaning house. he has nothing but praise for the staff, if he were to do it he would have done it already.
I will agree with you on one point. Our running backs coach has done a great job on getting all of the new guys up to speed on our system and i’m hoping they can do it again this week with boyd.
Remember, Injuries happen. if you have ever played a serious sport you would know this.
Keep up the great work guys and GO BRONCOS!!!
BroncoOrdie, yes injuries happen and it is true you cannot do much about a hyperextended leg with the catch that Hillis made. But groin pulls while jogging, and injuries while not going full speed or being hit hard are all on the trainers shoulder. Believe me I’ve played this sport and I know how hard it can be on the body, but the extent of the injuries this year is due to poor conditioning.
BroncosOrdie, furthermore, i agree it is a freak occurance all these injuries at one position, but you are forgetting, Tony was out 2 weeks with a groin pull, Champ out 4 with a groin pull, DJ out, Webster out, Mcree out, Plus all the running backs…. that is far more than any other team in the NFL…. and i think i am even forgetting some people…. you can’t be so naive BroncosOrdie… you have to put some of this on the training staff!
the people i was talking to at in the statium at sundays game agreed fully with me…. when you take a look back at the film of most these injuries… it looks like the players never should of been hurt….
and of course Shanny is not going to start cleaning house at the end of the regular season when we are looking at a playoff picture
TRAINING STAFF HAS TO TAKE SOME OF THE BLAME HERE
ok so apparantly BRONCOMADENCHAMP
hillis is a beast, for thos of us that remember. the kid ran through shaun rogers and knocked him ou of the game! He will be missed but if tatum can keep that foot healthy, the team will be in good shape
Please, dear God, let one of these other backs we just signed be the answer because HOLLY CRAP am I afraid that Bell’s gonna fumble every time he runs. Don’t know if any of you saw it but he fumbled it in the game and managed to recover it because the LB wasn’t paying attention. Hillis should NEVER play fullback again, that kids anything but a hammer up the middle on every down. He’s a playmaker and should be treated as such. Now onto Barrett, I TOLD YOU SO! All of you who had your stupid questions about why some of us were so bent on getting him to play NOW SEE WHY! He is a STUD of a player and I expect to see him starting the rest of the season! Again, I pray, LORD PLEASE let one of these other backs be the answer.
I think the current rbs will do an ok job and help us out a bit but its going to fall on Cutlers arm from here on out..
broncosfanmaddenchamp needs to change his name to RAIDERFANMADDENCHAMP! What you just said truly shows what color your blood runs…Silver and Black…and not Orange and Blue..
If you dont have something good to say about how to improve our team then dont say anything at all..Broncos fan wont wish injury to even the opposition dude..thats why we are the real fans of the NFL.
Glad Hillis is hurt what?? Zip it!!! that dolts fan talk!Any how welcome to the bottomless pit of r.b. tallent how do we do it time after time after time! When alot of teams cant muster a run game? It goes way beond the system. Enough to say Bell,Pope and Boyd can carry the load Keep the faith GO Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!
HRDNOKD – good point! I remember that post when many of us wnated to see Barrett and someone jumped on and blasted us for wanting it week after week.
I really think Tatum and Boyd are going to be a new fresh tandum that will be Huge! Here’s why:
Did you all see the interview with Shanahan when asked about Tatum? He said “He’s been humbled, anytime a player or coached and released and then given an opportunity to play or coach again it is amazing what can happen.”
He followed it up with “He’s working extremely well and he’s getting faster and faster. It’s football shape.”
I LOVE THIS COMMENT BECASUE SHANNY KNOWS RUNNING BACKS AND I’M TELLING YOU TATUM IS HERE TO PROVE! NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET YOUR 26 BACK FROM WILLIAMS AND WE’LL BE SET! lol
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
Well, I guess there’s nothing left to say to broncosmaddenchamp. Everyone else has it covered! Let’s hope These other guys can be at least half as good as Hillis has been!
I love reading the blogs! So entertaining sometimes…..the jarring back and forth…it’s almost like game day!! haha
I can’t believe a broncos fan was glad to see a spark-plug player like Hillis get hurt to see Tatum out there! That makes me sick. This guy is pretty much the sole reason why the offense got back on track. He tore up the yards and gave a boost of sorely needed confidence back to Cutler. I am always afraid Tatum is going to put the ball on the ground every time he carries it. Let’s hope he doesn’t! He has the potential to do alot of damage to the opposing defense, so let’s see him step up his game.
This next game will take a complete team effort in every facet of the game….but most importantly run defence. Almost 300 yards against the Bucs? WOW, that’s impressive. I can see this being a high scoring game and I think Cutler will have to bail the D out in this one!
Let’s take control of our own destiny and win this game…….please don’t let it come down to the last game of the season. The last thing I want to see is Rivers smirking on the sideline knowing he has a chance to stick it to the Broncos. Let’s have our division won and play all our back-ups while our starters are on the side lines making the crybaby gesture back at him. How does it feel to be a loser Rivers? Get used to it CHUMP!
bronc fan in WA word to your comment on Dre Bly. Bly is an incredible talent and is a sure hall of famer along with champ. However the guy is ridiculed so often due to having to take over such a big role with Champ out. I mean we should all understand what champ does is in NO WAY a cake walk and Dre is doing his best to take out the primary reciever and he had done well very well i may add. i mean did anyone see Dwayne Bowe with a Td against him no it was their tightend who hauled one in. Dre also kep Gerrard away from his guys forcing him to throw underneath to his TE and to Jones Drew. Dre did very well with LC as best he could keeping him to only @ catches for like for or so yards.
Dre is special and is doing well these past few games to keep passing to an utmost minimum and i think this is being overlooked along with the play of Wesley Woodyard.
FWI DID ANYONE SEE NATE LAST WEEK FOR ONE PLAY I EXPLODED WHEN I SAW HIM
HE’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I MEANT 4 catches for like four or so yards
GO BRONCOS!
Jay is our KING and Brandon Marshall is our weapon
I agree with broncofan WA, Lowery was hurting our secondary and it looked like he was scared to hit people. Barrett brings the pain!!!
Does anyone know if champ is back this week? He can help with the run support that we need against carolina…… Dre is a Beast!
i’ll agree i wasn’t to big on Bly last year and coming into this year, but you know what the man has been real real good in Champ’s absence. which big time receiver on any of the teams we have played in Champ’s absence has had a big game? not to many of them….our D is playing real good football and the addition of our starting LBs will only help.
Woodyard is an up and coming star, the guy plays so hard and intense….I feel like hes been in the league for a couple years now….I really like the direction our team is going, on top of all the injuries to the RB position and defensive side of the ball….it’ll be interesting to see how we play against Carolina, I think we can put together something special to shut them down, start by letting those LBS fly around the field and make plays….if our games against top opposition say anything, we have a good shot this week and the rest of the regular season. 11-5 here we come!
finaly
Dre deserves this praise along with Shanahan for bringing him over
and though i kno its only a wish
he should really try to tend to Champs plea
and that is to get Fred Smoot
maybe it sounds a bit unrealistic seeing as we REaLLLY need to pay Brandon Marshall after the year is over because wat he is being paid wont cut it
our defense has always been fast and that gives us a huge advantage
though undersized we get the job done.
has anyseen
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMERVILLE
as of late
he is finally showing that he is still the guy on D
if he can get to DELHOME even once
he will try to get the ball to early to smith ( the magician so to speak)
and wind up doing wat the Gladiator Farve did and
WOOOP
right to BLy
if champ is back this week then we officialy have the fasted secondary in the NFL
besides the SKIns
