For Broncos, Snow Equals Sweat

March 27th, 2009 - 1:52pm by Gray Caldwell

As you can see, the Broncos practice field hasn’t exactly been available for the offseason conditioning program the past two days.

The snow has forced the players inside to the weight room and indoor field, where Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten has been making sure they’re in top condition as mini camps near.

Andrew Pinnock said he feels like the work is even harder when you don’t have the fresh air around you.

“It’s hard — I figured that out yesterday,” he said, still some sweat beading on his forehead. “It’s already a little thin oxygen outside, but going inside in the little bubble with everybody, it definitely makes it even harder.”

So is Coach Tuten running you guys ragged?

“He’s putting us through a great workout –” Pinnock started to say before a voice chimed in from a few lockers away.

“Yes. Ben Hamilton says yes,” Hamilton said, bringing out a laugh from Pinnock.

“Alright, you’ve got the answer,” the fullback said with a smile. “But when I take my shirt off now, my wife says, ‘Ooh!’”

wow i didnt think about the fresh air helping. working out is working out to me and no matter where i am it sucks. indoors or out. i sure dont mind hearing these players are being run ragged, hopefully the defense is being run extra ragged. if thats possible. this is where a good season starts. players have to be in great shape for it and that takes months. so lets hope their gettin after it. nothing less than playoffs in 2009. GO BRONCOS!!!

  2. JCW154Bronco says:

Run them Broncos. Lets go more runnin so they can catch them RB’s and WR’s and QB’s. We need some stops and sacks. No more getting burnt on the deep ball or a stupid handoff.

  3. My Blood Is Orange says:

AAllrriigghhtt! thats that team gettin ready to smash on any one who wanna want some appreciate it Tuten.

  4. LBWilson56 says:

Sounds like the team is getting serious…Hopefully the D is getting in shape to improve on last year…..

  5. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

Me personally, I never like to hear this sort of talk nor do I have any pity for them. Getting a bonus to workout? What a joke.

These guys are getting paid more money than some countries have and this is their job!

“The workouts are tough.” I don’t want to hear it.

  6. monodono says:

aSharpeIdea_84, I disagree I want to hear the workouts are tough and I for one am glad for it. Kick their ass Coach Tuten!

scout.com sent me an updated mock draft today I thought I would share it with The Family. Chris Steuber, Scout.com has The Broncos picking
LB Rey Maualuga, USC barring any trades between now and then. Check it out.

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  7. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

Even when I was a young kid watching, I always curled my nose when I heard professional athletes talking about how their jobs were tough, especially talking about working out. Now days you have players getting paid a bonus to work out. To me that is totally insane and crazy!

I though it was about winning the Super Bowl? They shouldn’t have to pay these guys extra money to be in shape!!

No, what’s tough is a single mom working 3 jobs to provide for her kids and they still barely get by. Or a young kid losing their father or mother in Iraq. That’s tough.

Being a professional athlete making millions and millions living a plush life and getting paid to lift weights and run wind sprints is not tough.

I guess it’s all in how you look at it.

  8. royalbroncofan1 says:

Maualuga has that rare ability to quickly dissect plays and deliver bone jarring hits. He would be a perfect fit at MILB in the 3-4 defense. We need a leader in the middle on D, and Maualuga certainly fits the bill! He will be making plenty of trips to Hawaii for years to come, wherever he plays. Hopefully wearing the orange & blue!!!

    Go Broncos!!

  9. 15themarshall15 says:

aSharpeIdea_84 you go out there and put your body on the line then talk highest i got was highschool football and you have to dedicate yourself to that so unless you know of the work dont comment these guys are just as hard of workers as you or me or anyone

  10. broncofan-7 says:

i want maualuga so bad i love his intensity and his desire

  11. Iamthe56 says:

The air would’nt be as big a deal to me as the tempurature I like the smell of nice indoor facilities the ruber in the fake turf its kind of refreshing so if they are miseable even in a controled environment then that must be an intense workoutits nice to get out of the weather

  12. 07elway says:

Lovin’ the snow! Typical Denver weather… awesome!! Gonna get my fair share of the good ‘ol white stuff by Saturday, can’t wait!!

So I hope the defense can start working on their problem areas, which by now is just about everything. So excited to see Dawkins play for this team, that alone has me pumped up for the ’09 season. Just the thought of him and Champ on our defense… WOWIE!!!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  13. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

Woah, woah, 07elway, we have kids reading these blogs. Keep your share of the good ‘ol white stuff to yourself ;D

  14. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

The snow sucks but I’m glad the Broncos have been getting nice workouts in anyway. Keep up the good work and as always, GO BRONCOS!!!

  15. monodono says:

If anyones interested, I got round two’s mock Draft from Chris Steuber, at Scout.com He has The Broncos picking CB D.J. Moore, from Vanderbilt who can also return kick’s with the 48th pick barring any trades.

    http://profootball.scout.com/2/850896.html

I think He would be a good pick but with out a True NT I’m not sold on The Broncos being a good 3-4 TEAM. The D would be improved but I wonder how much. What’s your thoughts on this?

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  16. royalbroncofan1 says:

Monodono — If B.J. Raji is still available w/ the 12th pick he may be too valuable too pass up. It seems like F/A has addressed the DB, LB, areas plus a few additions on the line. Not sure who we really will draft. It’s only (the draft) a month away so we’ll see. The reason I like Mauaulaga is becuase I believe he will be an impact player. The intangibles he offers can’t be measured.

  17. 07elway says:

SuperBowlBoundBroncos – thanks for the laugh!! Didn’t mean to scare ya, but… I LOVE SNOW!!! BOO… scare ya again?? lol Ok so I didn’t get the kind of weather I had hoped for nor what the genius weather people said we would but its close. We got sleet, yicky… I said I love snow, not sleet.

Well anyhoo, hope the players’ workouts go well given they got the good white stuff. Hope our team is in much better condition than last year… way too many injuries. These guys need to take care of themselves!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!!

  18. monodono says:

    royalbroncofan1,
YOUR RIGHT “If B.J. Raji is still available w/ the 12th pick he may be too valuable too pass up.” I just don’t see it Happening.
I also agree with you on Ray Mauaulaga, “I like Mauaulaga is becuase I believe he will be an impact player. The intangibles he offers can’t be measured.” but I don’t think our LB’s were the weak point on the D.
I would prefer to go after Ron Brace in the second round rather than CB D.J. Moore, although CB is a problem spot for the D rght now. I believe you need to build your foundation first at NT. NT is usually a three to four year development and I’m not sold on were The Broncos are currently at NT.
    With the additions of :
    Parker, J’Vonne DT 6′ 4″ 325 26 5th
    Askew, Matthias DT 6′ 5″ 302 26 2nd
    Fields, Ronnie DT 6′ 2″ 315 27 5th
The Broncos are moveing in the right direction in size but I can’t wait to see these guy’s on the field.
    Then you have:
    Thomas, Marcus DT 6′ 3″ 305 23 3rd
    Clemons, Nic DT 6′ 6″ 300 29 3rd
    Powell, Carlton DT 6′ 3″ 300 23 2nd
Coach McDaniels said he will give Marcus a chance to compete for the NT position but I see Him more as a DE, and Nic Clemons has the frame to build on but He may be a DE on running downs. I really hope Carlton Powell’s injury is healed, I had high hopes for Him last year.
Bottom line is we Have allot of players competeing for One position and a Back up. That is IF The Broncos go exclusively to a 3-4 D. My guess is They keep 4 out of the 6 on the active roster, put one on the practice squad if they can clear waivers. That leaves one of the current guy’s out, and who knows who they might pick up in the Draft.
Once again I like Ron Brace 6-3/329/ SR- Boston College in the second and Terrance Taylor 6-0/319/ SR- Michigan in the 4th round or Sammie Lee Hill 6-4/328/SR- Stillman in the 6th round.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  19. bronco#80 says:

Im not sure who we should take in the first round. I kinda like Malcom Jenkins, because I think at LB we are good right now. Picture are secondary if we get Jenkins

    CB Jenkins
    CB Champ
    FS Dawkins
    SS Hill/Barrett

WOW that would be the best secondery ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. kase78matt says:

bronco#80 i agree i likr goodman but i dont think hes gunna pull it off. jenkins is good i think.goodman would be great depth. i still think we shouldnt get raji hes good but i wanna see powell play

  21. BroncoAussie says:

I like jenkins, great cover guy but does he have the speed for the pros. I don’t like raji I think he is to much of an overachiever. He played really well because he had another great tackle next to him Ron Brace. I don’t know how he would handle the double blocks that a nose tackle would receive. I like brace a little more than raji because he is better value in the 2nd round. That allows the broncos to go after a LB or even Jenkins in the first.

  22. broncos14441 says:

DRAFT PROSPECTS – DEFENSIVE FRONT 7

DT – - – - Well I have finally come around. I like Raji. I have been bashing him sincethe Senior Bowl but you guys have changed my opinion. I also like the other guy from BC, Ron Brace.

DE/OLB – - – - Alot of Standouts here. Just to name a few: Brian Arakpo, Arron Maybin (reminds me of Woodyard), Everette Brown, Larry English.

OLB – - – - What do you guys think of some of the quick Linebackers like a Brian Cushing or an Aaron Curry? Cushing is just a playmaker. And Curry is the most talented LB in the Draft (out of our reach.)

MLB – - – - The past few years, there has been a standout MLB taken in the Draft. 3 years ago – Patrick Willis. 2 years ago – Paul Puzluzny. Last year – Jerod Mayo. But what about this year? Ray Maualuga? Who else?

  23. charlton county bronco says:

who do you guys believe our return man will be? royal was awesome but i’m glad he’ll be able to focus on the receiver position.

  24. tscheff88 says:

I wouldn’t be concerned with the linebackers. We have an elite linebacker, D.J Williams, a solid starter, Andra Davis, a rising 2nd year Brandon Woodyard. Spencer Larsen made good plays when he was in, and I think Boss Bailey can still play. Mario Haggan also had one or two good plays. I also heard Doom was going to switch to OLB as a pass rusher.

Carlton Powell will be decent and I heard Marcus Thomas is playing defensive end now. So really the only position we need in the first round of the draft is a corner, safety or a another defensive end.

  25. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

First round I’d like for us to take Raji if he is available if not Tyson Jackson would be great too. And IF Jackson is not there we should take Laurinaitis or the best DE available

  26. broncosfrance says:

living in a montain aera , i like snow , beautiful field !!
Maualuga , if he’s still available , we must pick him for many reasons :
_switching to the 3-4 we need not one but 2 elite inside linebacker and i don’t see many of them on the roster now .
_ he’s an impact player , Seau like and may change our defense for many years .
_ if we don’t pick him and we draft a nose tackle for example , BJ Raji , then the chargers will jump on him ans combined whith Meriman we may regret it for a long time !
We have still men for the front 3 , maybe not a true NT and we should stick whith them and pick Maualuga if he’s still on the board , something tells me this guy will be the next defensive rookie of the year ansd a futur pro bowler ansd please not on the Chargers team !!

  27. KING GOZ says:

Next year there is a great NT coming out of Nebraska. Suh is his last name. I am a husker fan and watch this guy play all the time. He is a playmaker and disrupts the backfield alot and it didnt matter who we played. He is worth waiting for but most people have him as like the 3rd best player coming out next year.

  28. broncos14441 says:

    KING GOZ:
I’m also a Husker fan to and Ndamnkong Sue is going to be a Top 10 pick next year! He is amazing!

I have the Broncos taking Rey Maualuga in my Mock Draft.

  29. 2champ4pickSIX says:

I really think we have a good set of linebackers to broncosfrance, but you have to remember that when we switch to the 3-4 in games a lot of our guys will be switching positions.
i.e. DJ Willaims I doubt plays OLB in the 3-4, so you have him and Davis probably starting ILB in the 3-4 set, not to mention Larsen who was great at MLB, WESLEY tscheff88 not brandon! Woodyard, who can play inside or out, probably even safety even though he is small, still a STUD! I see Woodyard as being the Rod Smith of our defense! Un-drafted rookie free agent who has a thing to prove to the world!
Anyway, I to don’t think goodman will carry the load, I love champ OBVIOUSLY LOOK AT MY NAME! But there is a con to having him, he is soooooo good that teams give the other corner 90% of the throws, I remember D. Will getting beat often and torched by R. Wayne! Tons of people talked crap on him then. That much attention just wears down a person, so I still stick to my thoughts that no matter who we have over there, it will be a focus of the other team, and a soft spot on the D.
We’ll see, but my thought is that if we are going to have around the same results, put a young hustler in there like D. Will was, and let him mature and grow so that he can take over Champ’s spot in a few years. Hate to start all over in the secondary when Champ retires because we didn’t nuture a new player.
Anyway, I don’t think safety is a 1st round need unless we trade down to the later round and pick up another 2nd round pick for compensation! That being said I think the same thing on a corner!
IF we don’t trade down, draft either Raji if he is there, regardless because that enables us to do what he did in college in the 4-3, REMEMBER GUYS WE AREN’T SWITCHING STRAIGHT TO A 3-4 that takes time, we’ll be hybrid again with more 3-4 stints this year. Plus gives him time to grow into the NT we need, and it also lets us move who ever wanted to play NT instead to DE and help more there! Or I say we draft Maualuga if he is there because that gives us a great MLB for the 4-3 for years to come like many of you said, plus another great ILB to play alongside DJ in the 3-4. Hagan and Davis aren’t going to be around forever, plus DJ and Rey would be far better than any combination without Rey!
That’s all if we don’t trade down, if we do trade down, we need to go after Ron Brace!
Here’s to the anticipation of it all guys! And the sorrow if we go offense 1st! :’(

  30. Iamthe56 says:

We should take James Laurinitus his messurables may not be great but his college stats are undeniable he could be a leader for more than a decade he’s a safe pick I do like Raji but linebackers tend to make a much smoother transition to the pros than D tackles

  31. BroncoAussie says:

I like Laurinitus but he ain’t worth the 12 pick. Hows this for an scenario, we trade down to 23rd and pick Laurinitus and get a second rounder. Now the owner of the 23rd pick is none other that the New England patriots who also have the 2nd pick in the 2nd round, where for example we could pick Ron Brace. A wonder if McD is still on good terms with Bill because that would be a great way to start the draft.

  32. kase78matt says:

2champ4pickSIX i agree thats partly why i kept callin for champ as safety so we dont make these good corners look like crap lol. i also agree MLB is not an issue rite now i mean dj and andra will make to great ilb and when switchin to 4-3 u know dj will play out side. we also will have moss reid dumerville bailey woodyard and haygan as olb. i think moss will transition well to lb but i think elvis will struggle as will reid. unfortunately i think dumerville may not make the cut this year unless kept on as 4-3 de

  33. kase78matt says:

by the way im happy with the safetys we got now and glad we can leave champ never in a million years would i think we;d get dawkins lol

  34. 07elway says:

Just wanted to chime in and say it turned out to a sad day Sunday… Lou Saban passed away. Anyone that served as a part of this great organization in any way, shape or form will be missed. God bless his family in this sad time.

All I can say is I have never seen such a rollercoaster of an offseason EVER in my life. We got this that and the other thing… and then some that we’ve had to deal with.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  35. atwaters da man says:

I had the pleasure of having NT) J Williams (Chargers) at my nightclub here in Hollywood and we have picked up the best D-Line coach in the league!! He was really bumped about it! Which to me tells me that some of these Free-Agent D-Linemen have been picked for a reason. Even more of a reason to go front 7 with the first 2 picks.

We can address Corner with Free- Agency
    1) CB – McAlister(BAL), Pac Man(DAL), Miller- Justin(OAK), O’Neal- Deltha(NE), Dockery- Kevin (NYG)

    1) Raji
    2) Trade Down 2-3 spots for Maualuga and get another 3rd

    2nd Round
    1) Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State
Look at his Tackles for a loss!
    He is ready to start!

  36. jmanz22 says:

bj raji all the way baby
