Broncos Make Final Cuts, Sign Holliday

September 5th, 2009 - 7:10pm by Zach Eisendrath

On Saturday, the Broncos made several moves to trim their roster down to the league-mandated regular season size of 53 players.

The team released 12 players: running back Darius Walker, offensive lineman Mitch Erickson, tight end Marquez Branson, wide receiver Matthew Willis, defensive linemen Nic Clemons and Everette Pedescleaux, outside linebacker/defensive end Tim Crowder, linebacker Braxton Kelley and defensive backs Tony Carter, Vernon Fox, D.J. Johnson and Antwain Spann. The club also waived/injured defensive back Joshua Bell.

In a separate move, the team has signed veteran defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday.

After players clear waivers this weekend, the team can begin to establish a practice squad of up to eight players. Stay tuned to DenverBroncos.com for more information.

last year Orton didnt have berrian or muhamed..and yes he did have lloyd but lets be realistic here lloyd is NOT a number one or number two reciever. he is a number three reciever at BEST.

  2. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

on a side note the Rocky Mountain Showdown is getting ready to kick off here pretty soon.. I Cant wait……Let’s Go BUFFS!!!!!! Crush those Rams…………Again!!!

  3. Davis4H.O.F says:

Hey and atleast McD isn’t punching or firing coordinators or having to bail out thrre starters this offseason so I guess we are ahead of the rest of the West lol!

  4. Davis4H.O.F says:

Peyton: You’re right they had already ran for their football lives! But that was only last year. what was his excuse before? that he couldn’t beat out that scrub Grossman?

  5. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

Peytonovererfgffhillis22: QB makes the reciever. This year Olsen and Bennet for the Bears will be going to the Pro Bowl while, Royal and Marshall will be staying home.

  6. Davis4H.O.F says:

My former team : BYU 14 #3 Oklahoma 13! all I wanted to say!

  7. Davis4H.O.F says:

GO C St. Rams! The Mountain West Rules! lmao!!

  8. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

TXBRONCOFANATIC…You are right to some extent but what about all the YAC (yard AFTER catch) that both Marshall and Royal had…… the QB has nothing to do with that, that is just pure skill on the WR part.

  9. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

    True, Marshall rules at YAC.
But think of Randy Moss when he was in Oakland and then when he went to NE.

  10. Davis4H.O.F says:

Most of that YAC is created by putting the ball on-time and with authority in the right spot to allow them to catch the ball in stride and run with it! That doesn’t happen when the ball is wabbled to them behind or short and takes all day to get there! DB’s love that..they close and pick or hit the reciever..NO RAC! Our receivers will lead the league in BAC (Bruises after a Catch) and TAP (Tackles after a PICK) Cutler and to a lesser extent Simms and Brandstater get the ball there accurately and with a quickness that make Yards after the catch possible!

  11. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

Now I’m not trying to start anything with anybody on here, after all we are all rooting for the same team, I Hope. But I just don’t understand how people are already throwing our team under the bus before the ACTUALL season starts. It’s PRE-season for a reason and that is to work out all the kinks and be ready to go come week 1. now if we go 0-4 or 0-5 then I can see it being ok to start throwing out the blame somewhere. but as of right now we are all tied for first, so lets at least wait and see what our 1st team does against other 1st teams in the NFL for a couple of weeks before we start throwing coaches, players under the buss.

  12. Davis4H.O.F says:

Honestly Peyton: I think we are set at every position but QB! We are deeper on Defnse than ever and Nolan has them playing great..and wait till the regular season you haven’t seen half of what that D will do! On OFFense..QB is the only real problem and even then it is mostly just Orton! And why they kept Jordan over Walker is a head scratcher!!

  13. Marshallman-15 says:

denver will be fine, and if not, what are we going to do? We don’t choose if anybody quits or trades anybody. Where I live, everyone is a Rams fan, and that’s why Boise State sells more tickets than anyone else here, lol. Just give it time, if anything. Support, support, support. that’s it.

  14. Dynamicdave says:

Davis4H.O.F, here are highlights off of YouTube where it clearly shows 3 different times that Kyle threw over 30 yards, acurately. You asked for 1? I give you more then 1. You are being biased against Orton and unreasonable in this debate to seriously think that Orton hasn’t ever thrown for over 30 yards? I do like many of your posts, don’t get me wrong, but we definately agree to disagree with your post saying he can’t throw for over 30 yards? That was proven wrong by the very 1st YouTube video I pulled up. Give Orton his shot. If he fails (which I think won’t happen), then fine, replace him with Simms. But he deserves his chance.

  15. paulbedichek says:

    I wish we got Seymour

  16. Dynamicdave says:

Weird, they just flagged my post? No bad language or anything. It simply had a post showing a video link of Kyle throwing over 30 yards. Not just once, which someone asked me to show, but 3 different occasions. I will post it below this in case it gets flagged again…

  17. Davis4H.O.F says:

WOW! Three whole times? I can throw it 50 on a line and I’m just a washed up hasbeen college corner! should I be QB for the broncos?

  18. tnalen66 says:

We kept Jordon, and cut Walker!!!!?????

  19. Dynamicdave says:

Ha, ha, you just found out? Yeah, we’ve been discussing that for awhile. Oh well, we can only hope that McD knows what he’s doing/

  20. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

Just got the word that Brandon Marshall is reinstated by Denver… Hope things get better now…

  21. Dynamicdave says:

Yeah, lets hope that Rods “words of wisdom” helped him to calm himself down down. He can get all the things he wants out of the Broncos, money wise, as long as he is patient this season and applies himself. He just needs to understand that he doesn’t have the same lifestyle as many of the WR getting the big bucks. The off the field issues are what hurt him. He proves he is on the straight and narrow and the money will be there.

  22. Dynamicdave says:

Meant to type “down” only once, lol. In a hurry.

  23. Dynamicdave says:

    So, what’s shakin’, 99?

  24. Dynamicdave says:

Did they have to release someone to include Marshall?

  25. Greatness007 says:

When Marshall gets back. One of the WR are gonna get cut. Any ideas which one????

  26. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

Nothing is really “shakin’ ” as of right now… Just started my SEN10R year of HS last week, so I’ve been busy with that (keeping me from here)…

But I guess they did have to cut anyone else… I read this yesterday on this website:
“The team will keep seven receivers on the roster, though only six are currently active with the suspension of Brandon Marshall. When Marshall returns from the reserve/suspended list, the team will make another roster move.”

  27. Marshallman-15 says:

Walker should’ve replaced jordan. mcdaniels is biased because he came from NE. But, we have Hillis, Moreno, Buckhalter… I don’t think he’ll play too much

  28. Greatness007 says:

I just hope not Brandon Lloyd. I say let Chad go.

  29. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

Plus (just looked) the roster only shows 6 active WRs and Marshall in still under inactive (not anymore)… So that leads me to believe it’ll be at another position… Possibly one where they wanted an extra day to think about it…

So it looks like we know our 7 WRs:

    19 Royal, Eddie
    84 Lloyd, Brandon
    14 Stokley, Brandon
    11 McKinley, Kenny
    10 Gaffney, Jabar
    16 Jackson, Chad
    and obviously now B-marsh

  30. Marshallman-15 says:

…and if i were to pay attention to the D-chart, id know jordan comes before hillis and moreno

  31. Dynamicdave says:

I hope it’s not Moss. That would be just plain cruel.

  32. Marshallman-15 says:

but the depth chart also says orton’s our starter, so…

  33. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

So does everyone get what I’m saying? I just wanna clearify…

According to the website, we are keeping 7 recievers (read this:)

“The team will keep seven receivers on the roster, though only six are currently active with the suspension of Brandon Marshall. When Marshall returns from the reserve/suspended list, the team will make another roster move.”

So it makes one think that we’ll be getting rid of someone at a different position

  34. 47rocksurworld says:

Heh where did you hear that Marshall was reinstated, just curious where I missed it thanks

  35. Dynamicdave says:

From the DP, a little more info:

The Broncos formally turned in the paperwork to the league office Sunday to lift wide receiver Brandon Marshall’s suspension.

Marshall was at the team’s Dove Valley complex for meetings and took part in a practice as well.

The Broncos were also granted, by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, a one-day roster exemption before making a roster move. Marshall’s return gives the Broncos 54 players on their active roster.

The roster exemption expires Monday so the Broncos will have to make a move to get back to 53 players.

  36. Greatness007 says:

When Marshall comes back. They keep all 7. It will be a inside LB or S or a DL Look at the break down by position. Can’t get rid of a outside LB or corner. It’s only 4 of them each. Other ones have ILB 5, S 5, and DL 9. Moss is on the OLB squad. He make up the 4.

  37. royalbroncofan1 says:

TXBRONCOFANATIC: Simms pass to McKinley during the 49ers/Broncos exhibition game was by design. McKinley broke his route after he saw that Simms was in trouble. This per Simms post game conference. No on the spot improv.

This was evidenced quite a bit last year with Cutler and Marshall, as Cutler would stay or break out of the pocket and he would become fixated on Marshall. Meanwhile Marshall was freelancing downfield. Gunslinger Cutler shooting from the hip and Marshall playing sandlot football. It became the norm, not the exception. Coach McDaniels is not looking for risk taker in the pocket. McDaniels demands discipline from all players, from blocking assignments, stepping up in the pocket, to precision route running. Marshalls freelancing downfield will not fly. Coach McDaniels has three disciplined QB’s with Orton, Simms, and Brandstater. Time will tell, which one will catch fire with the new system.

  38. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

I got a text from ESPN saying it….

  39. Greatness007 says:

This just in Shawn merriman had a Brandon Marshall type of laps. He has been arrested.

  40. Dynamicdave says:

007, yeah, someone mentioned it earlier. Tila Tequila. Look at Merrimans haircut? Last of the Mohicans. Wonder if he’s still on ‘roids?

  41. Greatness007 says:

Sorry guys I gotta go. Any Given Sunday is on. lol I never miss it. ESPN just Mentioned the Marshall reinstatement too.

  42. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

I got the Marriman text from ESPN during church today…

  43. Dynamicdave says:

So Walker is on the PS…

  44. Dynamicdave says:

99, ha, ha. I just got this picture of you during church with the radio plug in your ear. The preacher is talking about the devil being in hell and at the same time, the Broncos score and you jump up and scream YES!!!!! Classic…..

  45. Dynamicdave says:

I posted this on another article also:

So, Kory Lichstensteiger is with the Vikings. Tim Crowder was also claimed off waivers by the Bucs, but ended up a free agent. Tampa claimed more players than they had available roster spots so Crowder wasn’t among those they kept.

    Cold, Bucs, cold.

  46. George Bush says:

Greatness007 – The report is wrong, there are 4 ILB’s and 5OLB’s – the roster says Haggan is an ILB when the depth chart says he is an OLB, and he plays outsideLB.

Since the roster shows 3 tight ends and 6 wide receivers plus Marshall that is 10 receivers. The Pats have 6 wide receivers and 2 tight ends. This leads me to believe that he will cut a wide receiver.

Anyway we will all know soon enough.

  47. Dynamicdave says:

GB, I don’t think that they will cut a WR only because they put Willis on the PS. TE Branson also. I think a D player will go. “IF” they did get rid of a WR, it would be Jackson.

  48. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

DD, nah I wouln’t do that haha… But I do get texts everytime they score, or a quarter is over… and I’ve wanted to one time last year haha…

  49. baylinorcrush says:

If I remember right, they kept 4 CB’S, but 5 safeties, I believe they might cut Barrett.
