Broncos Make Final Cuts, Sign Holliday

September 5th, 2009 - 7:10pm by Zach Eisendrath

On Saturday, the Broncos made several moves to trim their roster down to the league-mandated regular season size of 53 players.

The team released 12 players: running back Darius Walker, offensive lineman Mitch Erickson, tight end Marquez Branson, wide receiver Matthew Willis, defensive linemen Nic Clemons and Everette Pedescleaux, outside linebacker/defensive end Tim Crowder, linebacker Braxton Kelley and defensive backs Tony Carter, Vernon Fox, D.J. Johnson and Antwain Spann. The club also waived/injured defensive back Joshua Bell.

In a separate move, the team has signed veteran defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday.

After players clear waivers this weekend, the team can begin to establish a practice squad of up to eight players. Stay tuned to DenverBroncos.com for more information.

Upon futher review I must admitt the following

    1. O.C. you are right about Mcd he is just following a system and a mentor that is proven to work.

    2. You could be right on with the jordan theory I let my dislike for the player cloud my judgement.

    3. DD you are dead on with your comments about mcd philosophy. Like I
said before I can admitt when I’m wrong

    4. mcd and coaching staff has this team playing more physically then I seen the broncos play in years

So in the end as I have said before I will support this team as I have always done

    go broncos

  2. Orange_Crusher says:

All in favor of starting “the kid”, Brandstater say, AYE!

Now we have someone on our team that we can call ” The Kid” and it is a total compliment! Right On!

    GO BRONCOS!!!

I don’t think McD traded JC for a worest QB, he traded him for the best deal he could get. Do not forget that Orton is in a contract year. He is not making that much anyway. McD did not bring him in and give him a big contract. McD is not putting his future into Orton.

This is a rebuilding year. Fans cannot expect a new cach to come in and turn a team around in one year that had this bad of a D. He could have drafted all “D” but that would not have been enough remember we drafted a new D line a couple of years ago, look how that worked out. I had heard fans dogging A. Davis as being a bad LB, I know lets get Nate Webster back and put him in the middle. Not.

I see Winborne was cut yesterday. Another smart coach.

Go Broncos, Go Team, Go Coach

  4. broncoterry says:

I say no to the “KID” not yet. If I remember correctly people wanted Sims after week one. I agree it is nice to have a kid that acts like a man.

  5. blum says:

Just another example of a punk with no self control.

  6. Big D 44 says:

Brandstater is showing a ton of promise. If I were to guess why Coach McD was in his ear a lot, I would say it was because he did not spread the ball around. I’m not sure but I don’t think Royal had a catch. Right now Brandstater is only throwing to a few guys. I love his presence on the field and arm strength though. I would support starting him (if that is what coach deems best) but it would be a gamble. But hey Flacco did it. Saying that I wil support Orton until given reason to thing otherwise.

For all the negative poster’s. Lets give McD a chance. I really like the new energy he has brought to the franchise. Also, he has grown up engrosed in football his whole life. He is a very bright mind and I feel we are lucky to have him. I will always love what Shanny did for us and will always consider him an offensive genious. But I feel McD comes in with a solid background in getting the best out of all faucets of the game (offense, defense, special teams). I believe we are going to surprise a lot of nay sayers.

    11-5 or better.

    GO BRONCOS.

  7. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

    HA!!!!

Shawn Merriman choking out Tila Tequila!!!
Hopefully hes gets a pretty lengthy suspnsion. That would be a blessing for the Broncos. If it turns out to be true.

  8. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

On a side note did you guys hear that the Okland Raiders accuired NE Patriots star DE Richard Seymour for a 2011 1st round pick?

  9. cutlersucks8 says:

The Raiders are a joke a first rounder for Richard Seymour! A second is all I would give, and the raiders are goona suck for a long time. Anyway he’s not resigning with them this offseason he’ll leave to another team, Like the broncos!

  10. Marshallman-15 says:

you’d be surprised, they may actually go 6-10 for a change this season. and the chargers will suck pretty soon. their money is alllllll gonna go down the drain when LT and phillip rivers get their last laugh

  11. footballMANIAC says:

Although that trade makes it less likely that the Pats will release their nose tackle (can’t think of his name). I wish we could get him.

  12. bronc fan in WA says:

    footballMANIAC its Vince Wilfork

  13. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

MANIAC….. His Name is Vince Wilfork… and there is no way they are gonna let him go he is still young and has alot of good football left in him

  14. Dynamicdave says:

    nyc bronco man says:
“can we start getting some people who know how to be a QB, please?

somebody call Elway up and talk him out of retirement, PLEASE…or lets go get Mike Vick….or at least sign Jeff Garcia…anyone of those three are ten times better than two stiffs we got at QB now.,..Orton & Simms”

Do you actually even watch the news? Vick is on the exempt list with the Eagles. He can watch practices, etc., but doeasn’t count against the roster. He is an EAGLE. Garcia? Please. You WOULD try to bring a QB in at the start of regular season. Yeah, that’s logical. You base too much off of preseason and obviously overreact and blow things out of proportion. Calm down. The QB’s we have will be fine. If Orton doesn’t do his job, than McD will put in Simms. And to say Simms isn’t a good QB is way off base, as well. He did fine until his injury (both at Tampa and here in Denver). Brandstater is going to be a good QB. He has the tools and the intelligence. He is a fast learner. You really need to pay closer attention to the games.

  15. Dynamicdave says:

Oh, just a friendly FYI, the site I will be writing for, Fan Huddle, contacted all of us writers today. We will begin to write late tomorrow or Tuesday and the site will be available to the fans on Thursday (if everything goes on schedule). They cover all sports. All teams. Hope to see you guys at the Broncos blog.

Where’s my post? I bleeped it out! ha ha

  17. cutlersucks8 says:

anyway does anyone care what the so called “analysts” think

  18. Marshallman-15 says:

I dont understand, cutlersucks, but I think Brandstater could be really good. It’s pretty early, but remember Terrell Davis and Tom Brady? Hardly known, but when they got the ball, it just couldnt be repeated

  19. Marshallman-15 says:

…And Oton and Simms are pretty good. Maybe we should trade for Tarvaris Jackson…lol. I don’t know. I think Tarvaris will be cut pretty soon if not already

  20. Marshallman-15 says:

Never mind, but we could probably get him for a 5th round plus Ingle Martin

  21. cutlersucks8 says:

    Ingle Martin is released Marshallmaan-15

  22. Dynamicdave says:

Like I said, you don’t bring in a new QB a week before opening day. Besides, I like what we have for now. If Orton doesn’t “git er dun” (a little Larry the Cable Guy) then Simms will step in. But I think Kyle can “git it dun.” ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBAAAAAAALL?

  23. ERoyal248 says:

We dont need Wilfork. We have chris baker who looks like the steal of the draft. Our ends look good, peterson looks impressive and mcbean is stout vs the run. our secondary is one of the best in the league. ILB DJ/Davis look good. Doom looks like he’ll have a big year. Other side, im hoping ayers can step up. Only real holes on the team are QB? lol. The holes on the team are really only… QB, ILB, CB, DE maybe. Not too many imo.

  24. royalbroncofan1 says:

Don’t lose too much sleep over our QB position. Just refrain from listening to those dipsticks at ESPN…. j/k. We’re set to start the season sports fans. Ditto on what DD said…. Orton, Simms and Brandstater – good to go!!

    GO BRONCOS!!

  25. denwu says:

I’m behind Orton and all. But I wouldn’t be upset if the Broncos picked up Garcia for a backup, if not starting. Garcia with this line and offense would be very very good. He has one or two years left. What you guys think? I mean Simms is good, Brandstater has potential, Orton is solid, but Garcia might be better and that’s what this business is all about. Having the best possible players on the field. The Raiders don’t make good decisions. Just because they released him, doesn’t mean anything. They released Shanny.

  26. dadirty1 says:

Dynamic dave- how can you say that!! do u really think kyle ortan can get it done! lets be reasonable! the reality of it is that we traded away a franchise QB for a backup qb!! Orton is not the asnswer, and he in injuryed i say start Tom B! ant let him get some expirience….. and hopefully he does ok if not we are gonna have to get a QB in the first round next year! so im praying that bears suck so we can ahigh pick!

  27. BucknBronco says:

I can’t believe these NFL players…choking your girlfriends?
Suspend him (and test him for steroids).

  28. broncomvp24 says:

Normally I see shawn merriman at the gas station on sundays… wonder why he wasn’t there today? Oh well..

Anyway. Orange_Crusher, we don’t need Marshall. He needs the $ so if we sit him for 1 or 2 games (McD feels that no one player is above the team) then he is out that money and will realize he needs to chill. He didn’t want to play the pre-season and got his wish. Marshall will choak this season because he does not know the offence. Thank you for the compliment though, idiot.

  29. denwu says:

You ever wonder if Bronco officials actually check maybe this blog to see what people are saying? I would have someone check to the blogs to better understand the mindset of the fans. I hope the best for Orton, don’t get me wrong. I know he played well with what he had, and was really good in college. I know McD is the best QB coach in the league right now. Can you imagine what McD and Cutler could’ve done if they got along……..ok that’s in the past. But if Orton doesn’t work out, we could either draft a rookie stud cus we had a crappy year, or we could trade for a franchise ourselves. I hope Orton becomes one of the best in the league. If Marshall shuts his mouth and plays, we will have a top five offense. Without him, not so.

  30. Dynamicdave says:

dadirty1, reality? Is it reality to throw in a rookie QB that played against 2nd and 3rd stringers, much of the game.? Is it reality to judge Orton after a preseason (which, except for the 1st game, managed the ball well)? You asked, so I’ll answer. Yes, I think that Kyle Orton can get it done. He hasn’t shown me anything that says he can’t? he has gotten better with each and every snap. he is learning from one of the best QB coaches in the game. Reality is that you’re still living in the past because of the Cutler deal. Nothing Orton will do will satisfy you, obviously. You are entitled to your opinion about Kyle. Let the season speak for itself. But I refuse to throw him under the bus just because Bowlen and Xanders traded Cutler. That is basing an opinion off of pure bias, not logic. You want to throw in a very, very green rookie who would get killed, IMO, in Cinci. You want to see the Broncos win, right? Throw in Brandstater and watch those hopes go down the drain. He couldn’t even get a pass to Royal? The best WR out there. He had tunnel vision on Lloyd. Sound familiar? Orton and Simms had no problem spreading the ball. Don’t get me wrong, Brandstater will get better, no doubt, but he is not ready yet. Starts one preseason game and people want him to start? Unbelievable. Players shouldn’t lose their starting spot to an injury if they were doing well before. Orton and Simms were doing well.

  31. Dynamicdave says:

denwu, agreed. You know, someone once mentioned that we should get real. That none of the players read this stuff. He is soooo wrong. They not only read it, some have written articles for it. Ayers said he was reading the articles and blogs at this site while waiting for his contract to get done. McD says he doesn’t read the press, which is fine, but players do. Officials, unlikely. But the players like to get a feel of what the fans are thinking. The important part is not to let all of our bickering/panicking/bashing, get to their heads. We help to pay their salaries. We buy their merchandise. We buy the tickets. It matters to them what we think, maybe not for all the right reasons, but it matters.

  32. florio's_mom says:

There is a new blog by Coop. It’s not on the front page, scroll up and see.

  33. Davis4H.O.F says:

DD: Too bad you seem to have forgot that Brandstater drove with efficiency against the superbowl first team defense and handed the pressure and speed just fine. he is more mobile and has a bigger arm than Orton ever had. He also took some vicious first team Defense hits and hurt the tackler..at 6’6 and 225 he is a big boy! Orton is passible at best and has very little upside and defenses do not have to respect his arm past about25 yards arm side and 15 yards offside of the field and if he is flushed he is done! Simms is the best of both worlds but I’ve said for months Orton isn’t even the 2nd best QB on the team and look how much Tommy B improved with ONE WEEK of first team practice snaps!

  34. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

Orton has shown me enough to say he’s not gonna last long. Sure it’s not scientific or anything but I get the feeling when he’s in the pocket for too long (he’s incapable of getting out of it) because is number one is covered that he’s panicking. He throws it away (if were lucky) because he doesn’t posses the vision to see the field.

Simms (again it was just one game) was able to escape the pocket and chuck it downfield to Mckinely. That’s vision and confidence.

I judge a quaterback not on how well he can deliver the ball on a cookie cutter route (Kyle screen pass Orton) but on his ability to improvise and make something out of nothing. I just have yet to see Orton do that. I think that’s the key for a quaterback on 3rd downs. Especially third and long when there’s good coverage and you need to buy time and find an open man.

    Broncos Forever.

  35. Davis4H.O.F says:

And I predicted a San Diego meltdown months ago too…Shaun Phillips, V Jackson, and now the thug Merririod have all been arrested and charged! Merriman won’t be able to buy off Tila with season tickets and a few thousand dollars like Phillips did with the security guard he socked up..lol!!!!! by the way Merriman is back on the juice! Write it down he will get caught!

  36. Davis4H.O.F says:

TXBRONCOFANATIC: amen brotha! Orton can’t scramble and doesn’t have the arm strength or the frame to improvise under pressure! Simms till Tommy B is ready!

  37. Davis4H.O.F says:

So here is the dilema: Play Orton despite everything to validate the stupidest trade in NFL history, or Play Brandstater to prove he is a QB late round picking genius? Which facet or the Boy Kings ego wins? Thoughts?

  38. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

Ha! It’s great that Merriman is such a retard. Hate the Chargers. I don’t care if we go 6-10 as long we beat the Chargers twice. that would be sweet.

  39. Marshallman-15 says:

Orton will last us, I’m pretty sure. strengths: carries ball well, very accurate. faults: bad decisions

  40. Marshallman-15 says:

and he doesnt throw TOO far

  41. Marshallman-15 says:

but what do YOU guys think?

  42. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

that’s it Davis4HOF, it’s all about McD’s ego. Don’t get me wrong I think McD is supersmart and he will prove himself to be a great coach. But I think keeping Orton as #1 has something to do with maintaining his ego so he doesn’t think “Jesus, I made a dumbmove when I got neckbeard as QB”. You said it Simms until TB is ready.

  43. Dynamicdave says:

He still didn’t spread the ball around. He singled out a receiver and that won’t work in regular season. You make it sound like he played a perfect game? He didn’t. He played a good game but Orton is still the starter and I’m satisfied with that. Until Orton shows me he can’t get it done, nobody on the blog will convince me different. I am not ready to jump all over Orton for what hasn’t happened yet. That includes speculation and worrying about his arm strength. If he can’t get it done, then Simms is in. If you think that Simms is not a good QB because of his injury, then I question the logic of that? He was doing great and had a promising career in Tampa till he had his spleen removed. He has been doing well in Denver. You guys expect instant 100% turn-a-round in every aspect of the game? Not happening. But you have not proven to me that Orton can’t get it done. You just “say” he can’t. I have seen him get it done in Chicago with a lot less. His resume is good. I will give him the benefit of a doubt till it’s time not to. But I won’t throw a rookie QB into the 1st game of the season when my 1st and 2nd QB are ready to go. That is just unrealistic. I will not fix what hasn’t been proven broken just because fans saw a rookie in one game and think he’s the 2nd coming of Christ. Hey, I hope Brandstater DOES develop into a quality QB for the Broncos, but he needs to carry the clipboard for now.

  44. TXBRONCOFANATIC says:

DynamicDave Really, I faith in McD. I don’t think he’s that hung up on himself to let Orton play if he really thinks he can’t get it done. I trust that if the time comes McD will do what is needed in order for our team to win.
I geuss I’m just biased against mediocre QBs.
The Brian Greise and Jake Plummer years have given me very little tolerance of ineptitude in the QB. Perhaps I won’t be satisfied until we get that next frachise QB.
In the end I have confidence in McD though, I mean look what he did with M. Cassel.

  45. Davis4H.O.F says:

DD: I do agree that simms is the best QB that we have..he has all the strengths of Tommy B and none of Ortons weakness..see my previous post. If Simms can’t go I still think that Tom B is the best option. he is poised under pressure and doesn’t make mistakes on a week of reps! Orton’s weak arm won’t convince or impress ANYBODY to not stack the box and play safeties close and one on one on the outside. He doesn’t have the arm to play High School Powder Puff let alone NFL!

  46. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

DD… I Agree with you 100%. You can’t say we should start a rook who had one impresive game in the preseason. He had one drive in that game against the first team D. and then the rest of the game it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Orton is the leader of this team and he can get it done. He did good in Chicago and had nobody except Matt Forte. Now that he is here in Denver and has one of the most talented WR Crews in the league he will do fine. there is no way we should start a rook cuz he still has a lot of learning to do.

  47. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

And for those of you who say Orton can’t throw a long ball…… just go back and watch some film on him from previous seasons. He is no jay cutler in terms of arm strength, (we all know that), but he can deliver the ball down field more than you know.

  48. Davis4H.O.F says:

Show me on clip where Orton was accurate over 30 yards EVER? You won’t find it! And Orton had good recievers they just all bailed cause Orton and Grossman suck! Benard Berrian and M Muhamed, Brandon Loyd (Ours now) just to name a few who excelled before and after their time in Chi Town! Muhamed: ” Chicago is where great receivers go to die” says it all!

  49. Davis4H.O.F says:

Aand Simms and Brandstater both have cannos for arms and are much more accurate than Orton. Watchn how many receptions are because the receivers (example: Royal in PS game 1) only caught the ball because they made heroic efforts to come back to get passes thrown short. Orton is a DB’s dream! Pick Six going the other way cause he threw a duck out into the flat!

  50. Danso says:

I’m glad McD doesn’t spend his time reading & listening to all his critics and arm chair quarterbacks. His reputation and future is on the line. He has assembled a great coaching staff and I would bet he listens to their advice as well as following his vision and plan. He has 53 pieces to a puzzel and I would bet he is using all his and his staff’s knowledge and wisdom to try and get the puzzel put together correctly and rapidly. Give these guys the benefit of the doubt then judge by the results. I love the energy and excitement of this new direction and am glad we have moved on to try and get out of the rut we have been in the past few seasons. Go Broncos 9 & 7 this year 13 & 3 next year!
