Finding something remotely intriguing about routine warm-up stretches is generally like pulling the proverbial needle out of the haystack.
But the fans in attendance at Broncos training camp on Saturday did their best to throw a curveball at the norm.
Roughly 3,000 fans stood up in unison and mimicked Broncos players during the warm-up stretching session on Saturday morning, creating a buzz that lasted throughout the morning during an eventful third day of training camp.
“That’s a moment I’ll never forget,” Rahim Moore said. “Even (CB) Champ (Bailey) was like, ‘What are they doing?’ I said, ‘Man, they’re stretching.’ It was a great moment. It was very funny.”
While the on-field action was highlighted by moments like Moore’s diving interception, Demaryius Thomas’ leaping catches and pad-popping hits that resonated throughout the morning, the fans stole the spotlight when it came to off-the-field antics.
The stretching session brought a whole meaning to fan participation, and some Broncos players who saw it happen expressed their appreciation for the fans who stood behind them – literally – each step of the way.
“That’s very encouraging that we’ve got a fan base that stands behind us and really encourages us to keep going because it gets hot out here, we get tired sometimes, but seeing those fans out here gives us some confidence and allows us to keep going,” linebacker Steven Johnson said after practice. “It felt like one whole body. They’re our 12th man.”
Not all of the players were lucky enough to see it happen, however – as tight end Jacob Tamme lamented after training camp ended.
“No one even told me,” Tamme said, noting that he was stretching with his back turned to the crowd. “Sounds like something you should turn around and look at, but I didn’t get a chance to. Maybe they’ll do it again tomorrow.”
