Fans in Record Numbers Head to Dove Valley

August 18th, 2011 - 5:14pm by Gray Caldwell

We knew there was a lot of fan interest at this year’s training camp. Turns out it was a record.

This year’s attendance set a Dove Valley record, as an average of 1,597 fans came to each practice.

A total of 27,142 people came to watch practices at the team’s headquarters, and an additional 17,982 fans attended the team’s Summer Scrimmage at Sports Authority Field on Aug. 6. That represents the second-highest total ever for a Broncos training camp practice, and brought the final tally to 45,124 fans.

So, we’d like to thank you all for coming out — and even if you couldn’t, thanks for sticking with the blog and other stories on DenverBroncos.com for updates throughout.

As John Elway just said on Twitter, “Thanks to our GREAT fans for their support during camp. You guys came out in record numbers to watch, and we appreciate you!”

  1. Bro says:

    Tebow for Ryan Mallett?

  2. randy2191 says:

    for mallett?? really?? lol

  3. HomeTeam007 says:

Thinking about our roster. I still think we need to improve our O-line, and CB positions. Obviously the Ty Warren injury is concerning but we have the guys to fill in. What happens if any of our O-line goes down? I dont see anyone on the bench pushing for a spot

  4. randy2191 says:

i think we will pick up a OL that can play all positions and a CB to replace jones and a DT on sept 3rd

  5. HomeTeam007 says:

Sorry, Gray. I had to ramble on about a previous topic.

As for this post, it is a fantastic testament to the greatest team in the NFL!!! The Denver Broncos have great fans because they are a great team, city and organization. It is so nice to see the light as we come out of the Dark Ages of Mcd and co.

    Keep up the good work!

  6. HomeTeam007 says:

randy, I hope so; but why Sept. 3rd?

  7. randy2191 says:

sept third is when teams will cut down to there 53 man roster and there will be some 1700 i think it was players cut by that day

  8. randy2191 says:

bro, but with the mallett thing.. i say in 3 years mallett will be the next kevin kolb/matt cassel a career backup to that point that will get to be traded for 2nd round pick or higher it was a great investment for the patriots.. just hopefully it wont be us needing the QB

  9. HomeTeam007 says:

Right. That has got to be quite a chore to keep up on the other 31 teams possible roster cuts knowing which ones may be worth our time.

I still think that Orton goes to another team for a decent player and a 3rd round pick. Domata Peko from Bengals? I dunno.

  10. randy2191 says:

naw ortons our guy for this year.. and philly has been impressed with andy dalton as there QB of the future.. also denver would take the 3rd for orton straight up so it would have to be one or the other if they were to trade

  11. baylinorcrush says:

1184 players will be cut Sept 3rd.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Great turn out for training camp and surprising considering the cba mess, people have short memories, but it was free too so they don’t feel like they were spending money for the NFL, it will be more interesting to see the number of seats sold for Saturday’s game though….

Here is our scouting process for the cuts if anyone was interested.

“Other clubs will take their college scouts and their pro scouts and fly them to preseason games and see if they like anybody,” Broncos general manager Brian Xanders said. “That’s the old-school way. The problem with that is you’re seeing 22 guys run around in real time and it’s impossible to evaluate them all.

“What we’ve found is that was a waste of money, hundreds of thousands of dollars of travel, for college and pro scouts to fly everywhere to watch a preseason game and then they get in the fourth quarter and all these backups come in and they’re supposed to grade all 20 guys.”

The Broncos have embraced a more high-tech approach. The NFL now ships digital video of every preseason game, with the coach’s sideline view and coach’s end zone view, to every team almost instantaneously over the Internet.

By the day after the game, it’s in the Broncos’ video system, complete with down-and-distance, field position and game stats. They can call up every play by any player just by entering a jersey number.

Xanders, a former linebacker, assigned himself the linebackers. Adam Peters, a scout who came to the Broncos from New England along with Kidd, has defensive linemen, a key category for the Broncos, especially with the training camp injuries to Ty Warren and Marcus Thomas. Peters was a defensive end at UCLA from 1999-2001.

Champ Kelly, the assistant director of pro personnel and a former defensive back, has all the cornerbacks and safeties. Kidd has running backs and offensive tackles, two more positions where the Broncos might put in waiver claims on players they like.

Phil Armatas, a pro scout, has centers, guards and fullbacks. Dave Ziegler, another young pro scout, has receivers, the largest single group. He’s evaluating 155 players.

“It’s a grind,” Xanders said. “We sit there and watch all the tape over and over as the games come in. So we’re excited about Week 2′s games coming in, and then Week 3, and then we’ll all get together and cross-check everybody.”

Terry Bradshaw is saying he loves Tebow dont try to change him they were alot of QB’s in this league that won and were not technically perfect

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, that piece about the scouting was in the DP this morning, written by Dave Krieger, it was interesting, I bet those guys love the internet invention.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Thank god Klis is giving us some encouraging news about the QQ, LMAO:

One quarterback circus is enough. The Broncos, who have already gone through the league’s most intense arterback dramas this training camp, will not be using their No. 2 overall pick in the NFL supplemental draft Monday to select Terrelle Pryor.

In fact, the Broncos are not expected to select any player from the supplemental draft.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, it’s stuff like this that makes you think that Quinn and Tebow are in a battle for # 2:

    — Tim Tebow: An up-and-down day while splitting the second-team reps. He had a couple of incomplete passes over the middle, including a dropped interception, but hit a couple of nice passes while under pressure. His best pass — deep down the left sideline during the two-minute drill — was dropped by running back Jeremiah Johnson.

    — Brady Quinn: Split the second-team reps and came in for one rushing play with the first-team offensive line. Completed a Hail Mary touchdown pass to Eddie Royal in situational work at the end of practice.

They both evenly split the second team reps, they didn’t use to, and Quinn even had a try with the ones and Tebow didn’t, just saying I don’t care what the media makes of our QQ, I have enough info in front of me to make my own opinion about it, even so some bloggers here don’t like it, tough.

  18. BroncWild says:

If there were any DT that I wanted to be cut and picked up by the Broncos would be FRANK OKAM that plays for the Bucs. He’s listed at 6’5 350+ and can move for someone of that size.

  19. stevecan2 says:

A lot of opinions are directly in line with what the media is saying. I have yet to hear anything new, ground breaking or jaw dropping. Tebow will be fine, the sky has not fallen yet.
