To begin the second quarter, quarterback Matt Ryan scrambled for seven yards with an unnecessary roughness penalty moving the Falcons an additional 15 yards.
Ryan then completed consecutive passes to wideout Roddy White for eight and seven yards, as the Falcons crossed into Denver territory.
Following the two passes to White, Ryan found tight end Tony Gonzalez over the middle of the field for a 16-yard pickup to the Denver 27-yard line.
After the completion to Gonzalez, Denver was penalized for having 12 men on the field. Head Coach John Fox challenged the call and lost, leaving the Broncos without challenges the rest of the game.
On third-and-short from the 24-yard line, cornerback Champ Bailey hit Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers short of the first-down markers, forcing another Atlanta field goal.
Falcons kicker Matt Bryant converted on the 42-yard field goal to put Atlanta up 13-0 with 10:05 remaining in the first half.
