John Elway just sent out a number of tweets regarding contract negotiations with Champ Bailey, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent. For those of you who don’t have Twitter, we figured we’d share them here.
“We’ve been working with Champ Bailey’s representative this week on a new contract, which is an important priority for us,” Elway wrote. “Our conversations have been constructive, and we’ll continue those talks in the hopes that we can reach an agreement. Champ’s an elite player who means a great deal to our entire organization and our fans. We want Champ to finish his Hall of Fame career as a Denver Bronco.”

that sounds more promising than other things ive heard…as long as he is selling his house and buying another one in colorado ill be happy…just pleasseeeee dont let him go
We have to keep Champ!
No draft prospects would heal the step backwards if Bailey were to leave. Especially when you consider he would also become an apponent from time to time. Many “good” players can leave a team and not pose a direct threat by being in another jersey, but loosing Bailey would be a certain double wammy.
I was just about to write a letter to Mr. Elway. In a time when Melo, Cutler Marshall wanted to leave town we have a Hall of Famer who wants to stay.
Can you imagine if the Broncos said Elway is too old in his 12th year and we need to go in another direction. I am not saying it is the same but the fact is Champ played @ a very high level and I see him moving to safety in two years and being a Rod Woodson type player.
Keep the man here where is respected and wanted by Fans.
Great to hear from John so we can be informed as fans what a change from that McDaniels person.
Thanks John for your info about Champ Bailey. This up to date information to the fans is well appriciated. You know how important it is to us Denver fans to have the scoop. Transparency is in full force. I`m a happy fan as far as John is in office. SIGN CHAMP!!
I`mready, I`m with you on keeping Champ in Denver. I am confident that a deal will get done. This transparency thing is very refreshing.
@ John,
it seems like you have things in proper perspective, good to see you at the helm now, wish you would of been here last fall when Bowlen and Ellis pulled out of the negotiations. Now it’s gonna be harder and cost more than it would of back then. Oh well, live and learn and glad to see you are attempting to righten their wrong.
It’s obvious Elway reads these blogs, last blog we discussed the Bailey thing ad nauseum, and today here pops up his tweeter account of the Bailey situation….
The power of the fans at work!
True to his word, the fans do have a voice in Denver now, very nice of you to follow through John, keep it up, together we can be BETTER!
Amen to that Baylinocrush. Well said bro.
John Elway knows. He has a special bond with the fans. John understands who puts the bread and butter on all the owners and players tables. It all starts with the fans. AND WE FANS DO HAVE A VOICE. WE ARE BEING HEARD ONCE MORE.
Keep the Champ in Denver Duke!
Im beleiving that in a couple years, we can make Champ a Champ. Get that D fixed and bring the ZBS back and we can be a force again.
Champ is already a “champ” in my book. Character, leadership, fan appeal, and a GREAT player. Why wouldn’t the Broncos want to do everything possible to keep him here in Denver. Just git er done!
Elway, GETR DUN!
John, can you please tell Bailey that I named my dog after him and that he needs to stay. Please?
Thanks for the update John.
We sure appreciate your efforts in keeping the one player left who identifies most with the fans, the community and of course the Team !!
Let’s get #24 back in the house!!
Agree with your 12:07 post strand!!
Appreciate the update Mr. Elway!
Oh and baylin, if I’m ever in Austin, beers are on me! lol
Oh yeah, SIGN CHAMP!!!!
WE THE PEOPLE!! WE THE FANS!! THE CONSTITUTION OF THE NATIONAL FOOBALL LEAGUE!! FREEEEEEEDOOOOOOM!!
Ya Royal, John knows the scoop. Just like in every relationship, it`s a two way street. COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY!!
Sign Champ!!!!
After losing Cutler, Marshall, Hillis etc. if we lose Bailey too, (as the Emperor would say), our failure will be complete.
Our defense needs Champ in the backfield. We need to use move him all around the defense. We need to put him at safety sometimes okay. When we line Champ up at safety he can lock down a wider range of the field as opposed to locking down 1 player. We should have been using Champ more on the offensive side as well hes got great hands. We should have used Champ at punt return as well.
I BEEN HEARING A LOT OF TALK ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO DO ON DEFENSE SCHEMATICALLY ABOUT WHETHER WE ARE GOING TO BE A 4-3 OR A 3-4. STOPPING ANY OFFENSE CONSISTENTLY REQUIRES SITUATIONAL DEFENSE NOT JUST A 4-3 OR A 3-4 OR EVEN A NICKEL OR DIME. IF WE WANT OUR DEFENSE TO BE GOOD THEN WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO AND KNOW AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. OUR DEFENSE NEEDS TO KNOW THE NICKEL 1-5-5 THE NICKEL 2-4-5 EVEN THE 3-5-5 AND WE NEED TO PLAY MORE ZONE SOME COVER 4 PLEASE AND WE NEED TO LINE UP OUR SAFETIES BETTER, OUR SAFETIES ARE AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT KEY COMPONENT TO STOPPING ANYTHING RUN OR PASS.
I`d like either safeties in the 2nd round, Ahmad Black or Rahim Moore. They both have a nose for the ball and sure tacklers too.
So who was the idiot who pulled Champ’s deal off the table McD or Xman?
Make retiring his jerseys and part of the offer! He’ll sign then. Another Elway drive for the win.
opps ! as part of the deal
Trade # 2 too New England.
First Round
#17 DE Jordan Cal
#28 DT Muhammad Temple
Second round
#37 ILB Martez Wilson Ill
#46 DT Phil Taylor Baylor
I just think they need more than one player and trading that first pick gives the broncos more depth and much needed talent.
That is actually a fairly good formula.
If we sign Champ. use 4 picks on D a couple of FAs and the return of DOOM our D could be top 10-12.
WE’VE NEEDED SIZE AND DEPTH IN OUR INTERIOR DEFENSE FOR YEARS. I THINK WE SHOULD GET FAIRLEY IF HE’S AVAILIBLE JUST BECAUSE YOU CANT EVER ENOUGH SIZE UP FRONT, BUT I KNOW THAT DT’S DO NOT DEVELOP QUICKLY(OTHER THAN N. SUH) IN THE NFLOUGHT ABOUT. I HAVE ALSO THE TRADE DOWN TACTIC AND I THINK THAT IS A DEFINITE POSSIBILITY.
tnalen66, it was neither McD or Xanders, it was done by Bowlen and Ellis.
Just more class from my namesake
It means A LOT to us fans to know what is “our” organization up to…
Nice to know we are considering a TOP PRIORITY the re-signing of Champ!
I believe we would be very reasonable(not cheap at all) with the offer, now it is up to him if he wants to likely finish his brilliant HOF career in Denver, or if he decides to leave to a current SB contender team…. Would not judge him if he decides to leave, but must be for an immediate SB contender, if not I would get very mad at him… LOL
Sign Champ!!!
Go get’em John,John ElFoxway!
Go Broncos!!!
Thanks bay. either way it was not a good move to pull the contract off the table.
Thanks Elway for the info on Champ. so happy something is trying to get done. Sing Champ, make him happy that will make us happy.
Please bring back CHAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bailey is the best sign him now and never regret it…period
Here’s an excerpt from ESPN re: Champ.
“Champ is an outstanding player and I’d love to have the opportunity to work with him,” Dennis Allen told The Associated Press. “I think he’ll fit in the things that we’re going to ask him to do and we’d love to have him back. At the end of the day, it’s really a decision for management and him and his agent and hopefully they can all come to an agreement that both sides can live with.”
Bailey has long maintained that he loves Denver and would like to stay put but that winning is his top concern. He’s been to the playoffs just three times in his dozen NFL seasons and has never made it to the Super Bowl.
At the Pro Bowl last month, he said he listened to several players making sales pitches about joining their teams next season. Among those hoping to lure him was Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.
“Several guys realized I was a free agent and said they’d love to play with me,” Bailey said. “But they don’t make the decisions. Hopefully teams will show interest and we can really get things going in a couple months.”
Bailey also said at the time that he was buoyed by Fox’s hiring but noted player acquisitions were equally important for a team that has so many defensive needs.
“I think we’re going in a good direction,” Bailey said. “I don’t think things can get worse. One thing I do know is Coach Fox is a good defensive-minded coach and won a lot of games throughout his career, as both an assistant and head coach. I know he can do a good job for the Broncos. It’s all about who they bring in and try to fill the roster.”
I’m a CHAMP BAILEY fan all the way!!!
He is a great player and keeps humble about it and always carries a GREAT attitude on and off the field!!!
I was starting to think he had lost a step until he completely shut down Dewayne Bowe of the Chiefs twice this past season – who at the time was putting up great numbers this season!
We need CHAMP to move forward and with some UP-FRONT help Champ will do even better – meaning a pass rush this next season. which we will have with the return of Dummerville and hopefully our number pick of Deqon Bowser!!!
That’s my TWEET!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!
say folks, new to the site. How about this scenario,we sign champ, and then with the #2 pick we grab patrick peterson,we can still get front 7 help in rds.2-3(think cassey matthews out of oregon, who should be available when get there.just a thought,I mean think about it,peterson can come in and be an impact player right now, what a tandem, champ, and peterson, and think about it,with him playing opposite champ, the kid will be scary good…..
I’ve got two words: FRANCHISE TAG!!!!
Franchising Bailey at this time would be one more killer insult after Bailey was already insulted by Bowlen and Ellis walking out of his contract negotiations. They do him right this time through a long term deal or they need to do the bigger thing and let him go.
By this point, as if it may not have been clear six months ago, I’m sure that Elway and certainly Champ understand the fans admiration and yerning to keep him in Denver. I hate to be a devil’s advocate in this case but I remember all too well a similar scenario with one Steve Atwater. Regardless of what we, that being fans, media, management, ownership, and of course the player want there are still those glorified notary publics a.k.a. sports agents that will poison the mind of said player for a healthier commission on a deal. I would never suggest that Champ is not worth top dollar compared to other corner backs, but we have to remember that if the Broncos mean to invest in a rebuild they will not have the budget to let Champ’s chimps ask for anything more.
And there in lies the distinguishing characteristics of John Elway. A player that is immune to the “grass being greener” perspective. A player that also believed first and formost in himself leading a team rather than seeking out a team to get him a ring. The real question about Champ is weather any of Elway’s attitude and fortitude has rubbed off on him.
The big difference is Elway had been already to three SB’s in the first part of his career, Bailey has never even been to any! Monumental difference!
Meaning totally unfair to compare the two or ask one to act like the other, just saying.
Sign Champ and I love the tranceparentcy!
I really like John Elway in this position.
I still have major questions about xanders.
Go Broncos!
I like Champ but….he’s getting old and he wants a ring and deserves one in my opinion and I don’t think it will happen in Denver before he has to retire unfortunately. Father time isn’t on his side and to sit and wait isn’t realistic for Champ. I say trade Champ to a team on the cusp of possibly giving him a chance to go out on top before it’s too late and get picks in return to rebuild the Broncos. Then Champ can get a ring and so can we. It’s the only fair thing to do. Now if Champ doesn’t care about where he plays or whether or not he gets a ring then heck stay in Denver. But I think he wants that ring. I’m sure he saw John Lynch’s ring a few times when they played together and he’d like one for himself as well.
