The Walter Camp Football Foundation has named John Elway the recipient of its prestigious “Man of the Year” award, the organization announced.
Elway joins a distinguished list of former winners, including Roger Staubach, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus and Morten Andersen, who was last year’s recipient.
President and CEO Pat Bowlen congratulated Elway on the honor on Thursday.
“On behalf of the Denver Broncos Football Club, I’d like to congratulate John Elway for receiving this great award,” Bowlen said. “In addition to being the greatest Denver Bronco of all time, John is one of the few who is among the greatest players of all time in both college and pro football. His receiving this accolade from the Walter Camp Football Foundation is an honor well deserved by John for public service and community work that equal his greatness on the field. He has always been generous with his time for a myriad causes that benefit those in need and it is gratifying to me and the entire Broncos organization to see John named for this honor.”
The award honors an individual who has been closely associated with the game of football as a player, coach or close attendant to the game. He must have attained a measure of success and been a leader in his chosen profession. He must have contributed to the public service for the benefit of his community, country and his fellow man. He must have an impeccable reputation for integrity and must be dedicated to our American Heritage and the philosophy of Walter Camp.

He is and always will be “THE MAN!!” Congrats Elway..
Mr. Denver Broncos, without a doubt, and forever.
That’s how I refer to him in my Bronco album with a kazillion pics of him from his first day in 83 to his last in 99. There is no way a single athlete has ever done so much for a town, not in my eye anyway. He gave us his all for so many years and he got sacked more than anyone doing it and he ended up on a podium announcing his retirement not able to stop the tears saying his body couldn’t do it anymore.
Thanks for the sacrifices, you gave us our first super bowl win, something that will never be duplicated ever again in Denver and, like Bowlen and so many more, I will never forget.
Congats John Elway you were my idol growing up,and you deserve every honor you ever got.the best of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Most of you probably saw his appearance on HBO Real Sports -Bryant Gumbel along with Namath and Marino. This was about a month back or so. It was great to hear his story about coming back to play the last year in ’98 -’99. (2nd Championship). How he turned to his Dad for guidance. Truly one of the greatest to ever play the game. I’ll never forget when he first came to Denver. The anticipation by all, and the raw talent he had, (at the time). He of course refined his game and became greatest QB in franchise history. The resiliency he showed as he brought us back from so many probable losses. At Super Bowl XXXIII, When Mr. Bowlen said…”I only have 4 words”….”This one’s for John”…. A moment we’ll never forget.
Congratulations on Man of the Year Award -John!
NO college &/or pro football team will ever find another John Elway. Mr. Elway is one of kind. Mr. Elway you deserve any award you get & thanks for all the memories.
Number 7 John Elway> Back to Back SB wins> Congats You are the man> When you won our 1st I cried like a baby. All the other SB loses were history my man. I will replay my DVD reruns before every season just to get up for every game!!!!!!
FTR
None are greater than Elway. Congrats!
Mr John Elway #7, He is and will ever be the best QB the broncos had or will ever have. The sacrifices he made as a player , takeing pay cuts to get better players on the team to make the team better, almost loseing him when Dan Reeves and John did not quite get along, well we all know the story, and staying with one team from day one till the last snap in it’s self says alot about the MAN, THEN turning out to be the best QB in franchise history, giveing the fan’s in denver something we never thought or hope to ever get, 2 SUPER BOWL WINS. In my mind, that’s alot of blood , sweat, and tears for a athlete to go though to get what every pro player wishes to get in the end, and he did and MORE. Super Bowl XXXIII was special for me because of the pre-game with brett farve and what he said, quote: I WANT JOHN TO WIN A SUPER BOWL SOMETIME, JUST NOT THIS ONE. The rest is history!!!!!! The second SB was just iceing on the cake for John, doing battle with Dan Reeves, but it was bitter sweet cause we all knew what was comming. These are all my memories of the best BRONCO OF ALL TIME TO ME. Maybe one day a QB will come along here in DENVER TO REPLACE JOHN ELWAY, many have tried, but these are big shoes to fill. Congratulations John Elway, you will always be my #1 BRONCO OF ALL TIME.
This is absolutely great news, Congrats John, you deserve this like no other.
to this team and the City of Denver you ARE and will always be THE MAN!! no other player gave so much.
You are what made me a Broncos fan from watching my first ever football game in 83. i was so impressed by you that i followed you to become a huge Bronco’s fan overall.
i was at the game in San Diego when you got that first SuperBowl victory, sitting there next to a good friend of mine who BTW is a Packer fan. to stand at the end of the game and gloat to him made the game even more memorable.
No one else has ever given back to this team what you have. how you restructered your contracts to sign new players, you were never about yourself and always about the team, that in itself is a class act.
It’s great to see that you are still getting recognized for all that you have done, and will do.
enjoy this very well deserved award.
Congrats John!!!
Here is something that I don’t think many of us would have expected this year:
at this point
att comp % yards avg TD INT rushyds TD YPG QBrating
Orton: 194 124 63.9 1465 7.6 9 1 13 0 244.2 100.1
Cutler: 172 110 64.0 1201 7.0 10 7 56 1 240.2 86.9
plus one lost fumble for cutler
I will say I was sad to see cutler go and still think he is a great talent and miss some of his flash, but I am pretty happy so far with what we have in our QB just thought I would share the numbers.
sorry when I finished the above post it had everything properly aligned however when I submitted it it misaligned it, but you are all smart people, I am sure you can figure it out.
Congrats John. YOU ARE ONE OF MY HEROES!!!! I too shed tears on that first Super Bowl victory. Thank you Mr. Elway for having such great character and being such a competator. You are a hugh influence in my life with you actions on and off the field.
4th quarter down by 5 with 1 minute 30 seconds left on the clock. Give me John Elway as my quarterback everytime baby.

You guys are so bored out here that I figured I’d give you a liitle laugh form this article in a local Austin paper, the ONION. It’s purely a satirical publication and here are a few excerpts from the “Raiders achieve first down” article:
EAST RUTHEFORD, N.J.- In a improbable display of competence and on a basic execution of football fundamentals, the Oakland Raiders stunned the football world Sunday when running back Michael Bush miraculously rushed for three yards against the Giants and succeeded in converting a first down.
The Raiders, who fearlessly faced a third and one situation on their own 22 yard line, somehow gained the 36 inches needed for an elusive first down, despite numerous obstacles that included a professional NFL defense, owner Al Davis’ incompetent personel decisions, mediocre play calling and general ineptitude.
NFL analyst Tom Jackson registered his incredulity, saying that after he saw the Raiders gain 9 yards on the first two plays of the series, a “miraculous achievement” in and of itself, he never could have imagined they’d gain the one yard necessary to begin another set of offensive downs. The fact that they actually gained two extra yards beyond the first down marker, Jackson said, left everyone in ESPN studios besides themselves.
“On any given play there is so much potential for the Raiders to lose a significant number of yards that you never expect them to actually gain anything, Jackson said. “But they did it. They made a first down. And on three tries, like a normal pro football team.”
Jackson went on to credit the accomplishment to the much maligned offensive line, saying that not only did they show a full understanding of their blocking assignments, but they also ran the correct play when the ball was snapped.
Acording to referee John Parry, the first down also caught members of the officiating crew off guard. Parry said than when Bush moved the chains, his instinct was to throw an unsportsman like conduct flag for taunting.
“Michael just got up off the ground and handed me the ball without trying to provoke anyone,” Parry said. “Usually you’ll find the Oakland guys are jumping back on the pile trying to jam a finger into someone’s eye or just kicking wildly with their cleats.”
“At first I thought we definitely missed something,” Parry added. “But we reviewed the play and the league didn’t find anything illegal. They got a first down fair and square.”
The Raiders won the game 44-7.
Now, if that doesn’t get you going, you’re either not awake or you’re dead, LOL. There is more to the article, but this is as much as I’m gonna work for you guys, ahahah. See DDave, like I always tell you, there is good stuff in Texas, you just have to know where to go. From the outside I always disliked Texas, from the inside, it’s a totally different story, same with Texans, I didn’t like them when they came to Colorado, but they’re actually real nice people in their own State. I know you’ll still hate Texas for beating us in 77, but I don’t like Vegas, so we’re all square, LOL.
The Raiders LOST the game 44-7. Typo.
Baylin,Thx for the correction in typo cuz i was like…something sounds really wrong there lol.
While I enjoy the raiders sucking, I miss the competition. I want people to start saying AFC west is the best Division in the NFL instead of those clowns in NFC East (Giants, Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins)…..honestly, past the Giants I don’t see it lol.
There has too be something wrong with the NFL, Like a downward spiral. Too many teams going without wins and like 5 undefeateds up until like week 6. There shouldn’t be so many teams that suck so hard that am like ugghh I already know how this game is gonna turn out. Like the Browns against Bills. 3-6 cuz they both suck so hard. What happened to any given sunday? its still there but just barely. Dunno if this is making sense or maybe this has how its always been and im just noticing but some of these teams dont play like PROFESSIONAL football teams.
Anyway Im done ranting and yes Baylin we ARE bored. Bye week and all you know lol. Wish I had tickets to the ravens game i would be sooo in there lol.
Later All, GO BRONCOS
Dang, this sucks no Broncos football for a whole nother week. I just hope all of our players come back at 100% health and 100% focus for the match up against the Ravens. I also am looking forward to the Chargers Chiefs game tomorrow, I hope the Chiefs can pull off the upset and put the Chargers even further back behind us. But hey thats probably just wishfull thinking.
TRB – Every year there are really good teams, middle of the pack teams, and bad teams. This year the good teams have had early schedules filled with the bad teams. The bad teams have been stuck playing the good teams. Imagine if the undefeated Colts and Broncos had played week 1 or if the winless Rams played the winless Titans in week 2, there would be one less undefeated and one less winless team.
Parity in the NFL hasn’t gone any where. One year we may have all 2-3 and 3-2 teams after five weeks just becuase of scheduling and the “any given Sunday” factor.
Also, chance has a part in it. Denver’s immaculate deflection, Baltimore missing the field goal last week, Farve’s heroics against the 49ers, etc…
Denver is 6-0 and getting better. This is and will continue to be a great season!
Mmmmm could be,but I caught myself earlier today wishing the same thing, poth22. Thanks for the article baylinorcrush, and I’m glad you got the typo corrected because fora second I thought they were talking about another season. LOL
And I don’t miss the close rivalry with the raiders, I like kicking the raiders butts all over the west division. Iam looking forward to dominating the west for years. I hope for an 8-0 record this season against west division opponents.
GO BRONCOS
—————-
tjnartw- You mean 6-0, right? I totally agree with you, it is nice to wipe the division floor with the Raiders and play the weak Chiefs team, but at the same time it’s good to have a little competition in the division too. Otherwise people will just say that the Broncos are bottom-feeders and aren’t as good as they look. It would also force us to see problems with our team so we could fix them. So a soft division is nice, but a pathetic division would be detrimental to the team.
yes, thank you maniac, lol for some reason I was thinking back to when the Seahawks were in the division. But I did see some problems with the team and now would be a nice time to fix them. And I don’t see any thing wrong with people saying that we are bottom feeders as they are already saying detrimental things about our team. As long as we sweep the division, that would be a sweet season for me. I’m not sure but I don’t recall a season where we swept the division.
Hey guys check out this article done by our own 07elway
http://broncosarebest.blogspot.com/2009/10/celebrating-50-years-of-bronco-history.html
Point taken holleybronco…when i look at undefeateds schedule for the most part they have played the crappiest teamts this year. Especially the colts
I am with tjnart on the who cares if we have stiff competition in the division or not. Regardless of if we sweep the division, have you all forgotten what the other 10 games are like, I mean the majority of them are like against way upper tier class teams, if we can’t sharpen our teeth on those bad boys, there is something seriously wrong with this picture. And anyway, have you guys forgotten how soundly the Raiders beat us last year? I far as I’m concerned, the Raiders can remain in the cellar for as long as I live, but unlikely because Davis should normally die before I do, LOL. I think the rivalry against the Raiders was so long ago that some of you guys are going soft on them, unreal what time will do. I say nonsense, let’s step on them real hard every time we play them and make them look like the farce they really are, not mentionning that I love making the Raider fans look like the real idiots they are. As far as what the rest of the world thinks of our division, again, who the heck cares, certainly not I, respect is not in winning a division anyway, it’s in going all the way. There will be plenty of time to show the world, that we don’t get any respect now doesn’t seem to have hurt the team any, right? So it hurts some of you guys, get real, respect for our team won’t make us any better, it will simply build up your egos, is that what we’re in it for? What’s happened to winning, winning cures all things, so you can quit wishing we had more competition in our division so we could get more respect, and buckle up for the rest of the year, we have only 4 division games left and 6 others, we need to bag all these division games plus 3 or 4 others so we can have a shot at homefield avantage throughout, yes here I said it, I think we are a shoe in for the division, so we will make the playoffs, so I believe we can start thinking, us not the team of course, home field throughout, which makes the Colts game a monster game if both teams remain with identical records until then. That would be the game of the year for the AFC. I just think you guys are losing your fire in this bye week, you are so bored, weird thoughts are coming out of your fingers and ending up on this page so I thought you needed a pep talk before you start apologizing about winning the division with such weak competition, ahahahah.
Anyway, after this ranting, I knew this weekend would be super slow, so even so I wrote the Good, the Bad and the Ugly piece for the Monday night game last Tuesday, I decided to wait until this non-Bronco football Sunday to post it, so these pages won’t look so dead today. So here it is:
The Good:
On O: Scheffler was the difference on O today, most of it in the 2nd half. The two plays that were all pro, the sideline catch in the end zone with the two feet in while catching the ball fully extended, a thing of beauty, not unlike the winning super bowl TD for the Steelers last season, and the catch and run from our own 40 to their 7 that set up our last TD, brilliant run for a TE. 101 yards for the day, enough said.
Marshall, another overall solid performance, showed his beasty strength on a couple plays and again fought hard even when he didn’t catch it like that long pass deflection he made to avoid a sure INT.
Stockley seemed to be the go to guy this time, rather than Gaffney, and bailed us out on 3rd down a couple times including the TD.
Buckhalter with 75 yards running and catching the ball. Good 4.6 yard per carry average.
Orton, solid, mainly in the second half, again… None of it would of been possible without the O line. The pass protection they gave Orton was second to none, and as far as I’m concerned, they were the offense MVP with Scheffler.
On D: Sack, sack, sack, sack and one more sack! Even so, Rivers got away from the pressure more times than I care to remember, we still sacked him 5 times! Doom with 2 brings him to 10, leading the NFL. Bailey and Goodman got extremely busy as expected, Rivers strength is the long ball, and responded very well while leading all tacklers, Bailey 7 Goodman 5. The few people here who where unnecessarily worrying about Goodman last week should get a life, he is an excellent CB and one of our off season great pick. Dawkins was relentless while on the field as usual. Fields had an excellent day at the center, I thought his best game so far and Holliday keeps making the big important plays.
On ST: EDDIE ROYAL. What can I say? Only 11th man in the history of the NFL to return a KO and a punt for TD’s in the same game. Wow, I called the ST all week to perform after their debacle against N-E and they responded, without the ST, we most likely go home a loser.. Now, does anyone see the importance of that third phase of the game most everyone seems to forget about when analyzing the upcoming games?
The Bad:
On O: Sorry guys, but I am not half as enamored with Moreno as a lot of you. He had a terrible game, average 2.4 yards per carry for 44 yards and one catch for minus one yard. He is far from ready for this level and we better hope Bucky stays healthy while he is learning. He is obviously running into a wall right now, quite literally, his short yardage performance is once again non existent other than the diving 1st down run.
Terribly slow 1st half for the whole O once again. They tried to mix it up early with some
trick plays that did little then went on with the running game with Moreno which did equally little. Marshall gets the dumb A$$ award for making a soccer move, what’s the deal with that? Did it in training camp, now on the field to cost us a valuable first down. Inexcusable.
On D: Their O moved at will on us in the first quarter. Rivers 139 yards passing, personal record! We played a bend but don’t break type of game, so they made a ton of plays including 73 yards rushing by the worse rushing O in the league, but the D was able to tighten the screw on Rivers at game’s end when they fell behind and had no choice but to put it up in the air and forgo of the run. The inside linebackers, DJ and Andra had their toughest game to date. Not our best defensive game.
On ST: Prater missed a long one, only one KO in the end zone and Kern coul never punt them into a hole, instead punted it into the end zone. Of course we gave up the Sproles punt return TD, but they did well containing him other than that.
The ugly:
Not necessarily ugly, but the conservative play calling on O at the end of the first half which caused us to punt with about one minute to go and they score 7 on the punt return. Killer avoidable score if we play other than the just to go into halftime kind of ball. Also not necessarily ugly, but obviously McD was scared to death to give Rivers an extra down when he declined a 10 yard penalty in the 2nd quarter which would of put them out of FG range, instead they make the FG.
And, of course, the real ugly stuff that never changes, choice of play and by whom it is carried on short yardage… I said I wouldn’t bring this up again being I am so sick of it, so I won’t. That’s McD stubborn streak alright…absolutely a moronic approach for an otherwise “genius” coach.
6-0, week off, it must be good to be a Bronco now, right Jay?
See, I said I saw some things that needed fixing. LOL! And you’re right Baylinorcrush, McD. did kind of go into a conservative mode on that penalty and let them go for the field goal, but I’ll take a field goal any time rather than give Rivers another chance to get to the defense with 1 more play. I think that McD. sometime this season will take that penalty and give our defense a chance to get to the other teams QB.
NEXT GAME IN 1 WEEK
GO BRONCOS Let’s make it 7-0
