Elway Live: Tebow Making Progress

November 22nd, 2011 - 3:40pm by Kenny Legan

On this week’s episode of “Elway Live,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway talked about numerous topics, including the announcement that the Broncos waived quarterback Kyle Orton, evaluating Tim Tebow, the dynamic Elvis Dumervil-Von Miller tandem and much more.

After addressing the announcement that the team waived quarterback Kyle Orton, Elway touched on the comments he made Monday regarding the long-term future of Tim Tebow.

“It’s a full body of work throughout the whole season,” Elway said. “That’s where we are with Tim. We’re going to continue to look where he is. Like I’ve said, he continues to make progress week-in and week-out.”

Elway said that process they will use to evaluate Tebow at the end of the season will be the same for every other player.

“It’s the case with everybody on our football team,” Elway said. “We’re going to look at the body of work throughout this season.”

But Elway said the team’s focus lies with more immediate matters.

“We got ourselves back in the playoff hunt so that’s our concentration, to win football games and hopefully win the division and get into the playoffs,” Elway said. “That’s the focus right now.”

Part of the reason the Broncos are in the thick of the playoff race is due to the solid play of the defense, notably Miller and Dumervil.

Miller leads all rookies with 9.5 sacks and Dumervil has notched 3.5 of his own in the last three games.

“With Von and Elvis, and the pass rush we’ve created, they really got into (Jets quarterback Mark) Sanchez’s face the other night,” Elway said.

That title definitely aimed at taming the “No” interview, LOL.

    You go Duke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. HardHitting27 says:

    Indeed Bay.

Maybe Mr. Elway is realizing he may be the great #7 on the field and we still revere him, but he isn’t on the field anymore. And his last few weeks with comments and actions (being seen chatting up Luck, and scouting other QBs, which is just business) is leaving a sour taste in the fans mouths.

Some still think he should come out of the office back to the field to help Tebow develope.

  5. strandoftds says:

If Tebow is being evaluated week in and week out It`s a good thing. The front office at Dove Valley can`t complain about Tebows yet. If it`s based on wins and losses, we are on the right track.

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

I guess all the nay sayers were wrong about Elway being a COO!!!!!!!!
    I agree strand,he’s doing great!!!

I see nothing wrong with scouting players. He is taking precautionary measures to see with his own eyes possible options if Tebow doesn’t work out. That’s just being smart and staying one step ahead. I have not gotten the same vibe that everyone/the media has with Elway on Tebow.

He seems very realistic and his stance on the issue mirrors mine. He likes what he sees now, but he still has reservations about the future. The option offense isn’t a long term fix so yes we are having success with it now, but we need to be able to drop back and pass for long term sustainability.

  15. strandoftds says:

Gabe, to give you a heads up, Bay doesn`t miss a beat.

  16. HardHitting27 says:

To clarify, it’s leaving a bad taste in some fans mouths.

Others understand it’s a business and let it go.

I think the bigger issue is his perceived lack of support for Tebow with his comments. The thing is, most of the comments are accurate about the needing to improve on passing accuracy and such.

But the converting on 3rd comment, I felt was off. It’s not just Tebow that needs to convert those 3rd downs, it’s the team. And the 3rd down situation stems from not adjusting to what the D is doing to stuff the run, the Jets game being the example. McCoy and the play calling was predictable and the Jets seemed to be able to stuff the run easily. having an rb at less than 100% didn’t help either. maybe a look at the OC is still needed?

New blog that certainly brings a smile to my face

  18. oldsouthstander says:

Bay: What are contest rules if it’s a tie? No points of anyone or points for closest to actual score regardless of win/lose prediction? Biggest difference for WOS? Just wondering.

  19. strandoftds says:

Also, our WR`s must stop dropping passes.

  20. gabeharter says:

  31. gabeharter says:

Champ knows if a guy with heart like Tebow could throw like orton percentage wise. completions not interceptions…. haha he would b unstoppable 4 sure ! and i think if he works hard and keeps grinding it could happen. c er’ 1 2morro

I was born in rapid city, sd. have a lot of family in the southern black hills area. go there on vacation about two weeks every other year.i love the two weeks but I am glad my family moved out to vegas when I wa 4y/o.

  33. Yovi21 says:

I like Elway in the front office, but I feel that he should probably tone down his personal questions about Tebow. No fan in Denver truly believes that Tim can win throughout his career with his style of play now, but for the most part I think that most of the fans are willing to admit that Tebow will get better! (especially passing wise)…Not that Tebow ever lets anything get to him, but we have a realistic shot at making the playoffs this year; it would be a shame if Elway’s comments somehow affected Tim’s play. There is no need to cause some sort of distraction. If Tim wins more than 2 games in the remainder of this season, which is very likely, I think Tebow should be granted the starting spot for next year. I’d like to see what he can do with a real offseason of work under his belt.

  34. broncoduckfan says:

This is an excellent article by Woody Paige. I think it summarizes what I have been feeling about TT. He gets so excited that he overanalyzes and tightens up. He needs to learn to relax a little and not “overthrow”.

  35. broncoduckfan says:

Mr. Bowlen is well known for his excellent treatment of his players. Seems like the right thing to do by cutting Orton.

  36. [...] a full body of work throughout the whole season,” Elway said on the “Elway Live Podcast” on the Broncos’ official website. “That’s where we are with Tim. We’re going to [...]

  38. bellstar says:

In Elway I trust. Tebow needs a good off season than looked at again. Passing, Passing and Passing should be all he does on he off season. I really would like to get another running back. Moreno has been flop as with most of McDaniels picks.
