Elway Hoping to “Get More Connected”

May 7th, 2010 - 9:45am by Gray Caldwell

John Elway has no immediate plans to get into coaching.

In fact, after competing in the Colorado Golf Association 4-Ball tournament in Westminster on Tuesday, he called it something he can “always fall back on.”

In the meantime, the Hall-of-Fame quarterback is hoping to be seen a little more often around Dove Valley, helping out the Broncos any way he can while “on the outside looking in.”

“I’m hoping to get to know Tim (Tebow), and if he’s got questions I’d love to be able to help him out, as well as Kyle (Orton) and Brady (Quinn),” Elway told a group of reporters in a sit-down interview. “That’s kind of what I’ve missed is that connection, so I’m hoping to get more connected.”

After speaking to parents and students in the “Teaming up to Take Charge of Asthma” event at Montbello High School on Wednesday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels couldn’t help but smile when he heard Elway’s plans to get more involved.

“John Elway is going to be a part of this organization forever,” McDaniels said. “Anytime he wants to come around, he knows that he can. I have a relationship with John and I will continue to have a relationship with John. Any resource like that, you have to try to reach out and use it if you can.”

“What he’s been able to accomplish in his career I think is a great influence for some of our younger players and even our veteran players that have been in the league for a long time,” he continued. “Any guidance that he can give any of us or any of our players is well-received.”

Elway said he has had a chance to grab lunch with the Broncos head coach several times and after getting to know him, he has concluded that the two have plenty in common.

Both have fathers who were coaches and both have been to the top of the NFL — McDaniels has three Super Bowl trophies as an assistant coach, and Elway, as every Broncos fan remembers, won back-to-back Super Bowls as a quarterback before retiring at the conclusion of the 1998 season.

“I think he’s a fantastic young coach with that energy, and he knows the game,” Elway said. “He’s learned in the right situation being in New England — he knows how to do it.

“I’m excited for the Broncos and think that they have a lot of good things ahead of them.”

Build this team around Tebow, we are really in a rebuilding mode anyway, it will be great if we can compete this year but its really doubtful. Mc D is putting his stamp on the team and that’s great but we have at least 2 more years before we start to see any benefits from his work period!

If our Oline comes together and the older guys we picked up in FA on the Dline pan out,and the Rookies play hard,I think we can definitely compete,no matter who plays QB.IMO

BEAST I hope so I really do, But trading our biggest talent doesn’t say much, but rebuild. We are rebuilding from within and that don’t spell success to me immediately. But I do see this team being the one to beat in 2 – 3 years. I just hope Mc D has the time to turn it around!

I think if we arent making the playoffs and quick that McD will be in the hot seat in denver! we got rid of one coach who missed the playoff what… 3 yrs in a row. do you guys think McD will get longer than that? i dont!! but who knows im just a fan!! :)
    Go Broncos

Well rayjr26, not sure what Mc D has but he got rid of Cutler… Nothing heard from Bolen Got rid of Marshall nothing, Scheffler nothing. Seems to me he has more say in the teams decisions then whats let on. We as Bronco fans can only wait and hope that all is well in Denver!

Florio- I know what youre saying. Some people just bring it out of me. You of all people should understand that! But I have to tell you that your assumption “everybody in Broncos Country is content with McD”, is not entirely true…My family is 3 generations of season ticket holders and not a one of them like him either. And if you ever read some of the blogs on DP, they are more relentless than I am. Just sayin… I really dont hate the guy, or anybody for that fact (except the raiders), I just find it amusing to me how many people love him. And what really has he accomplished???? Sure give him time, or deal with it, or hes the coach and if youre a true Bronco fan you have to like him (or youre not really a fan)…heard it all. Just dont really like him, is all. Hey if he wins and takes the Broncos to great heights, EXCELLENT. For everbody! And me and my 3 generations of family season ticket holders can all eat crow!
    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!

    p.s- SIGN DOOM

Amazing! simply amazing! Let’s get off the “traded away talent” crap shall we? For the love of God, let it go! My Lord! Are we seriously still talking about this?

So once again, I’ll post my thoughts one more time because this article is another sign of what I’ve been saying for months.

McD is a problem huh? He benched our WR and TE because a meeting (which was well documented) by our captains (which included Dawkins, Bailey, Williams, Doom, and Orton) wanted them suspended! They wanted accountability!

Now, the legend wants to help out! Hmmmm interesting don’t you think? He’s had multiple lunches with the coach, he likes him, he believes he really knows football….hmmmm interesting!

Question….did the legend ever come back when Shanny was here trying to get it done? wierd….

Point is….there are highly, highly qualified people that believe in this guy! Amazing that the season ticket holding fan or arm chair quarterback can’t grasp it!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  9. Broncfalls says:

No dissrespect sndvl, but if the legend likes wear this is heading….I find it hard to believe no one else can support it!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  10. florio's_mom says:

I know what you mean man. I’m not in love with the guy. I really don’t like his arrogant attitude. But just like this team he shows a lot of promise. I’m trying to look at it half full instead of half empty, ya know what I mean?

I won’t say fire mcd! But more like, you brought you here for a reason now do it. Right now I feel his job as the coach is tied to how tebow performs.

Ps, what do you mean by you of all ppl should know this? Kinda interesting.

Any way can’t wait for this season. :)

  14. BRONCOSFANFORLIFE says:

i think it would be a great addition to add john elway to the mix and let me show maybe some experience to the younger guys and help influence some great background experience..

But as far as Mc D. He might be a little pressured from some people but we have to give him atleast 2 more years minumun to let his descsions and players come into affect.
