Elway Happy with Tebow

December 6th, 2011 - 4:42pm by Kenny Legan

Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow got another stamp of approval from Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway Tuesday.
On DenverBroncos.com’s weekly show ‘Elway Live’, Elway said he is pleased with the way Tebow has progressed.

“I’m very happy with it,” Elway said. “The whole staff is very happy. The team is very happy. Over the seven games he’s started, we’ve won six of those and we’ve won in a lot of different ways.”

Sunday’s victory against the Minnesota Vikings turned out to be another way Tebow and the Broncos pulled out a win: via a shootout.

In Tebow’s six previous starts, none had really pitted two offenses firing on all cylinders. In most games, the Broncos defense held firm and the offense produced when it counted to get the victory.

But this time around, Tebow and the Broncos needed to match the offensive outburst that the Vikings displayed, and they were able to do that.

“It gives us the confidence to know that if we do get in a shootout, we can keep up,” Elway said. “There’s not many people out there who thought we could win a shootout. I think this answered a lot more questions out there that we could go ahead and if things weren’t going well on the defensive side that we are able to answer the bell offensively.”

Tebow had his best passing game all season, going 10-for-15 for 202 yards and two touchdowns. He had four completions for more than 20 yards. He was able to put up those numbers without really having to carry the ball. One week after recording 22 rushes, he had just four against the Vikings.

“It just goes to show you what a weapon he is, that if they shut down one aspect whether it be with his legs, that he can beat them with his arm and vice versa,” Elway said. “If they’re going to make him throw the football, he can beat them with his legs. I think that’s one of the great attributes Tim has, that he can do both.”

NE’s secondary is not good, which will help our cause, although they do have that one pass rusher who has had some success of late (forgot his name). I’m mostly concerned with their TE’s and Wes Welker..

BTW TRB, no need to be all freaked out about drafting a QB next year, as far as I know we have at least 8 picks plus maybe a supplemental one or two, plenty of opportunities to pick D players no matter what Elway does with QB. And yes we need D players more than anything overall.

Historically, what it takes to beat a Great Passer is a Greater Pass Rush… This is no secret and NY Giants should have made that painfully obvious when they played in the Superbowl…

We have the basic making for a dominant team… On both sides of the ball right now… We have the percieved advantage of playing at home, although OUR Quarterback hasn’t lost on the road this season, which boads better for us come playoff time…

New England can be gashed by the running game, and as we will all see very soon DMT will be a consistant threat to stretch the D giving us Room to do what we love… Play SMASH MOUTH football!!!

  4. baylinorcrush says:

Minnesota, Bears, Patriots and Packers are the 4 worse teams in the league against the pass, at least they were last week, so this is why going more to the pass against the Vikings was the key to us having a shot at having success in these next two games, kudos to the coaching staff for jumping all over that.

  5. Bronco_Turtle says:

OT… Andre Carter is the guy you are thinking of..

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

I can’t wait to see the Raiders draft, what with all 3 picks?? LOL

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

    Thx BT

I’m still not sleeping on the Bears (no pun intended).. Of course there is Hester, but Barber is pretty fresh and we can’t over look him. I could also see the Bears come out with various formations/trick plays etc..

  9. Bronco_Turtle says:

Just be prepared to see Caleb Hanie on his backside, and our secondary having the opportunities to make plays…

As we’ve all noted multiple times, Hester can and will cause trouble for you if you give him a chance…

Love hearing Tebow called OUR qb! Those of us who are the so called “Tebow disciples” saw enough of his play at FL to know that playing tough road games is something else he thrives on. As I am not such an expert on football as most of you here can someone tell me why having Quinn and Weber working in our current system with current players is suddenly not an option for next seasons back up QB? Imho, drafting defense just makes more sense in the early rounds.

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bay… Quick question… We still owe the Browns a Conditional Pick this year don’t we? Can you see if you can find the Conditions of the pick and what round it will fall in? I can’t find anything solid regarding this matter…

We get one back from the Lloyd trade, which should be a fifth now, but which one are we losing?

  12. baylinorcrush says:

The Eagles traded LB Joe Mays for RB J.J. Arrington, on the condition that if Arrington did not make the Eagles’ 2011 53 man roster, the Eagles would instead receive the Broncos’ 2012 6th round pick. So we may not have a 6th this year, but 2 5′s instead.

This says we owe Cleveland a pick in 2012… due to the Brady Quinn trade…

  14. OrangeTsunami says:

That Lloyd trade is looking better and better…

  15. baylinorcrush says:

    As for the Browns conditional:

The Broncos acquired the former first-round draft pick Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. Haven’t been able to find out what that is though, probably nothing since Brady hasn’t started I would imagine, so it looks as we may have 7 picks plus supplementals if any.

  16. Bronco_Turtle says:

    ok… Cool… thank you

  17. baylinorcrush says:

I mean if we owe Cleveland a conditional pick for Brady riding the bench, we do have the stupidest GM in charge in the league in Xanders, LOL.

  18. OrangeTsunami says:

I hate to harp on the rookie wage scale, but since in place, you won’t see draft picks thrown around as much anymore.. Which is why we only got a 5th for Lloyd.. The Raiders?? Well, that’s a whole other story… LOL

Not sure if this has been posted, from NFL.com-

When it comes to Tim Tebow , opinions vary. Unless you reside in Denver or Gainesville, where the Broncos quarterback is held in the highest regard.

But the latest interesting survey of Tebow opinions comes from The Associated Press, which gathered four retired NFL signal-callers with similar scrambling reputations. Their answers when asked about Tebow are interesting.

    Joe Theismann

    Washington Redskins (1974–1985)

“You’ve got Aaron Rodgers , you’ve got Drew Brees , you’ve got Tom Brady that set a standard of excellence in football that we haven’t seen. What makes 2011 so unique is we have seen quarterback play in this league at such a high extreme, and in Tim’s case, the bottom rung when it comes to completions.”

    Steve Young

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1985–1986), San Francisco 49ers (1987–1999)

“I learned the hard way what the job in the NFL was. I didn’t know what that job was, and it wasn’t natural to me (to stay in the pocket), and I like to just run around and make plays. But it’s not championship football. It can be winning football, but it’s not championship football. And so I had to learn the job, and the job is a Ph.D. in studying defenses and the ability — and some of it’s natural — to deliver the football.”

    Bobby Douglass

Chicago Bears (1969-1975), San Diego Chargers (1975), New Orleans Saints (1976-1977), Green Bay Packers (1978)

“You have to make a decision: Can we put in some of the stuff that he’s real comfortable with, plus create all these problems for the defense? And then, are we better off sacrificing some of the things that he could be learning if we didn’t do that? Obviously, they have made that decision.”

    Randall Cunningham

Philadelphia Eagles (1985–1995), Minnesota Vikings (1997–1999), Dallas Cowboys (2000), Baltimore Ravens (2001)

“The bottom line is the man wins games. I’m probably his biggest fan. When I look at him, I see a large Michael Vick . People tell Tim what he can’t do; he defies the odds. He doesn’t do it in a way that everybody else does it. He doesn’t do it like Tom Brady or my man, Drew Brees. But let me tell you something, at the end of the game, it’s always exciting and he comes out ahead.”

What have we learned? Some people believe in Tim Tebow, and some people do not. Glad we cleared that up.

That Brady Quinn-Peyton Hillis trade still erks me if I think about it, dad burn it. But Hillis keeps pulling his hamstring, not a good history as far as his injuries.

  21. sndvl says:

Not that this pertains to us ANYMORE, but I think it’s safe to assume that Indy now has their own QQ, lol!

    http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d824cd063/archie-manning-cant-see-peyton-luck-working-as-teammates/

  22. strandoftds says:

For the Colts thats a good problem to have, draft Luck and see what happens. They`ll have to trade one or the other. Or they keep Luck on the bench for 3 years.

  23. griff77302003 says:

Im wondering about our running game sgainst the bears d , their pass d is pretty solid right ?

  24. tcmkmg says:

Luck will not be on the bench for 3 years. I just want to say how great it is to hear all the DB fans on the tv when we are on the road. The last 2 gms (SD and Minn) watching them i could hear the Denver fans being louder than the home team fans.
    GO! FANS!!!! from Oregon believers

  25. baylinorcrush says:

The Bears pass D is awful, #28 in the league but not as bad as the Pats who are dead last, try reading some of these blogs you’ll find a lot of good info, discussed just that this very morning.

  26. strandoftds says:

This would be another good game for Tebow to test his passing skills against a poor Bears secondary. Come on Timmy!!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

On the other hand Buffalo is 19th against the pass and KC 12th, while they are 24th and 25th against the run respectively, with the Bears 8th against the run and the Pats 10th it should all make the game plan for the next 4 games fairly obvious on paper, pass (against Bears), pass (N-E), run/pass (Buffalo), run (KC), overly simplified of course.

  28. strandoftds says:

This will give Tebow a good two weeks of passing the ball.

  29. old school crush says:

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Hi cap man, love Tebow miracles too.

  31. strandoftds says:

    That hurts my eyes. LOL

  32. baylinorcrush says:

    My ears too, LOL.

  33. strandoftds says:

    Flippen hilarious!

  34. Senrabekim says:

Bay, your post on the respective strengths and weaknesses of opposing defenses didn’t mention that coming into the game last Sunday the Vikes were 9th against the rush allowing only 99.3 ypg on the ground. We still shoved the ball down their throats for 150.
