Elijah Alexander: 1970-2010

March 26th, 2010 - 9:41am by Gray Caldwell

Elijah Alexander, who spent three seasons with the Broncos from 1993-1995, died Wednesday night after a nearly five-year battle with cancer.

He was 39.

Alexander was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, in 2005. After the diagnosis, he started a foundation, which you can visit at http://www.tacklemyelomafoundation.com/

Alexander played in 41 games as a Bronco and was a 16-game starter in 1994. He accumulated three interceptions and 1.5 sacks during that time.

He also made stops in Tampa Bay and Indianapolis, and closed out his nine-year career in Oakland. His final season in the league was 2001.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

This just out in the DP:

Philadelphia stalwart Donovan McNabb will wear the black and silver of the Oakland Raiders next season if the teams can finalize a deal that is nearly in place, according to ESPN. The Raiders are the leading contender to trade for the Eagles quarterback, ESPN said citing league sources. The Associated Press reported last week that Philadelphia wanted a first-round or high second-round pick for McNabb. The Raiders have a 39th pick in the upcoming draft. Oakland may be ready to admit its No. 1 overall pick of JaMarcus Russell has been a bust. Russell, drafted in 2007, signed a six-year, $68 million deal, but has not emerged as a solid starting quarterback.

If I had my way I definitely would rather face Jamarcus or Gradowski twice a year, McNabb could become a thorn in the AFC West.

  2. BroncosRmyReligion says:

Didn’t he get sacked huge in that game as well, but my favorite of that game was the nice deep pass to McKinley down the sideline and before he( McKinley ) got up Brandstater was jumping on him, lol. But true about McD and Bowlen bringing in Quinn. They should let Quinn and Orton battle it out this year and next year let Quinn and Brandstater battle it out.

  3. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think the most important thing is we get a starting Center,I don’t think Frye or Olsen is the man for the job, that’s why we need to take Pouncey in the 1st or Walton in the 3rd.IMO…Like to get Sean Lee or Daryl Washington ILB in the 2nd round.

  4. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah hate to play against McNabb twice a year, they better draft a LT or he won’t last long.LOL

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah hate to play against McNabb twice a year.

I would think it’s almost written in stone that Orton is not going to finish the season as the starter. He might begin the season as starter, after signing his one year tender, but he is UFA next year and if the Broncos aren’t willing to sign him long term now then they probably won’t ever? That would put the wheels in motion for Ortons departure at the end of this season.

If Orton starts 4-5 games and then Quinn gets the rest and starts less than 70%, then the Broncos can get a chance to see if Quinn is the future with only having to pay him 700K. I think It all says that the Broncos don’t know who the future QB is…

I’m see that Tom Brandstater is getting a little attention but it doesn’t seem like he is equated into in the QB competition…? Is he on the bubble? Are the Broncos going to select another QB in the early-mid rounds? Are the Broncos satisfied with Brandstaters “clip board holding ability”? Is he a long term QB project for the future? Is he a dud? I noticed that Josh didn’t even mention his name when asked who would be the starter next season…? He just said something like, he got Quinn because he wanted someone to give Orton competition.

I think that Brandstater is on his way out if he can only muster up less competition than Simms… jmho

    ILMSDB!!!

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

OC I think you might have a point there.

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’ll have to agree with Baylin,as long as we address the Oline, get a Beast at ILB,and a powerback, with good players that can start right away,I’ll be happy.

  10. sndvl says:

There are two scenarios where Quinn gets the chance to start.

    1- Orton gets hurt
    2- A lost season.

By lost season, I mean no playoffs. And IMHO, if Orton gets hurts then the season will be lost. Then again, if Marshall leaves, it will already feel like a lost one to me. Im trying to hold out optimism, but McD just brings that element of Chaos…

  11. sndvl says:

Let me clarify, I meant this Quinn starting THIS season…

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Love the “element of Chaos” analogy sndvl is feeling, he is on the brim of the abyss sort of thing, just funny stuff, LOL.

  13. broncos20 says:

“chaos element” & “brim of the abyss”..wow those some deep analogies…lol…

    wer’re only 3 weeks away from the draft…its exciting…

  14. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yup BFE and MIzaki, thx for the back up

Thats what i was saying. Dont doubt Gerharts skills at all. But if its just for situational pound. low percentage carries…we don’t NEED an all round back. Just one that is good enough to move the pile. And this Draft is DEEP like many have said, in Many positions. Really wish we kept our 1st round for this year that has way more talent.

I also would rank it as OL, ILB, and Power RB. Trading down would be the ideal aproach so we could get mroe picks but thats only if someone is willing. Maybe the Giants since I hear they want McClain. That would give us thier 15 pick i believe, and maybe another 4th rounder.

As far as QB competition, Like what all three have. If we could smash em all together we would have one dynamite QB. Im a fan of Brandstaters Arm as well. Wanted him to start last year. But bringing in QUinn just shows how much fiath has been lost in him. He really is on the bubble, but i dont see him goign anywhere, since we need a third QB that knows the system in case of a worst case scenario….

  15. sndvl says:

I sincerely hope McNabb does not go to the bay. I like and respect what he has done for the game. If he goes there I have no choice but to hate him!!!

  16. TheRoyalBeast says:

    sndvl

lmao @ element of chaos, thats exactly what he brings. And I as well think our QB’s success will definitely hinge on a Number 1 receiver (Marshall) not some rookie shot in the dark. But i am probably just biased against all the WR’s in the draft cuz I want us to keep the beast, and I am a beast fanatic….

  17. sndvl says:

Still say Larsen should get his chance at ILB. If not Haggen will. LB is NOT a need. More of a luxury at this point

  18. TheRoyalBeast says:

I beg to differ sndvl as you know. I beleive a big physical precense in ILB is a need. we have been owned in the run game. Haggan is old and Larsen is a question mark. Either McClain or Spikes will be fine by me.

I also liek McNabb and respect him…I think he deserves better than to be sent to the black hole where careers go to die. I would retire if i were him….go out on a positive note…

  19. sndvl says:

couldnt have said it better TRB…we have better than average backup, super college star and the other Tom…

  20. sndvl says:

for the sake of debating, if this revamped D-line is the real deal, then I think Larsen has an excellent chance to succeed. If he can only get the darn chance…

  21. TheRoyalBeast says:

but the Dline is a question mark…liek larsen lol…all we can go on is what happened last year lol

  22. sndvl says:

This is where Im baffled and miffed with McD- trade a QB, then trade for a QB; Cut a center, then draft one or use a practice squad player; trade Hillis, only to possibly draft another similar player; cut Andra, only to possibly draft another similar player; trade a first rounder for a half pint, sign a similar player in FA; possibly trade a Beast, to draft a possible bust; then there are the questionable coaching changes which I wont even start on…
Like I said, he brings the element of Chaos!

  23. derrick149 says:

sndvl, I totally agree with you. I think the success of stopping the run, falls on the shoulders of the def. line. If they do their job, our LBs are good enough to pursue and make tackles. If the D-line doesnt do their job, the LBs, no matter who they are will get swallowed up by the opponents O-line. My order of need for the draft is OL, playmaker at any position, FB, ILB and then youth to develop

  24. TheRoyalBeast says:

    derrick

with the loss of andra, not only do we need depth, we need a future…Larsen could be it, but we dont know. So i say draft McClain or better yet spikes in the 2nd round…

  25. derrick149 says:

but if we do that, what do we do about the OL to open up holes for Moreno and to keep the QB, whomever he is, off his back?

  26. derrick149 says:

i agree that McClain is a stud and could strengthen our LB group. But we have no C and no OG right now.

  27. FTR says:

    BFR.
As far as Spikes is concerned, I understand the-tell of the tape. I just enjoyed his interview and he sold me. He is going to play very well for someone.
    FTR

  28. FTR says:

That’s TRB ( TheRoyalBeast ) sorry to all the beasts out there it gets confusing sometimes!! Ha
Go Spikes. I would think that a smart pick if he is there?
    FTR

  29. TheRoyalBeast says:

FTR, lmao there really are alot of beast lol

It would be smarter to go for spikes because he is a second rounder…he is also slower tho according to 40 times. And a bit of a character question mark for a guy like McD. But he does play with intensity, and looks faster on the field. I believe they call it game speed.

    Derrick

you are right, we need OL I agree whole heartedly. but olsen is supposedly the new center so all we need is a center or a guard in the early rounds, and then we can get another one for depth in the later rounds. I still think ILB should be address with the 4th or second pick.

But then again, I also want a CB at 3rd Akwasi Owusu Ansah and RB Charles Scott in the 4th round. according to nfl.com/combine…charles almost never has a negative run. big powerfull guy. type we need at a later round. cuz all we need is someone to move the pile. not the best possible back in the draft.

  30. derrick149 says:

ok. I can go with u on that

  31. derrick149 says:

TRB ok. I can go with u on that!

  32. FTR says:

    TheRoyalBeast
I also though that Spikes could be a bit intense for McD. But if he is a leader and team player like he says he is then we could hit it big.
    FTR

  33. FTR says:

Ohh Yeah we need a center! And more wapons! JK
    FTR

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

sndvl: We’re having a hard time tempering our excitement about Tom Brandstater. Oh yeah, that’s right, he’s number #3 on our depth chart….lol

  35. derrick149 says:

Iupato (however, u spell it), Spikes, Ansah, Scott, and 2 best available players for the last two picks. How do u like that draft, TRB?

  36. FTR says:

I think we should consider Pouncey and Spikes in that order. Pull the trigger any way you want. And get these players also sign MB and look deeper for a WR if need be, or trade a pick to get them. It’s all good!
    FTR

  37. FTR says:

With Pouncey on our O line we could “actually” put anybody in at RB! Ohh sorry having a media flash back! Ha. But I really think these two could make a good start to the draft!!
    FTR

  38. broncosfreak30 says:

You know guys, I was just watching nfl films on the draft. I would love either to get McClain, Berry, or Thomas for our first round pick. Those two safeties are by far the best that’s come out of the draft in a while imo…

How would everyone feel with us getting either one of those guys??

  39. rkymtnhigh says:

    hey people,

Never have too much to say but I read your stuff all the time. good stuff.

Did you you notice when your on the home page and scroll through the roster of players on the right side, that there is no longer #15 anywhere.
There is still Doom, Orton, Sheffler, but no Marshall. Things that make you go hmmmm. Mabey its just my computer…

  40. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Derrick

I can definitely live with that Draft Order. I would love it lol. Hop dove valley feels the same.but i bet the garhart lovers would hate it lol. Spike in the second round and OL in the first round, iupati or pouncey or w/e. Still like McCLain but if we can trade down, its the logical approach.

    freak30

Like all those guys. If someone who we will not mention didn’t get rid of our second first roudn pick….Berry could fall to us at 11 and maybe Mclain at our 14 spot. But he traded it for a pint sized dude. I liek McCLain as well, big, fast, vocal, and good football IQ. Sounds like McDs MO

Berry won’t be picked not unless we lose Dawkins or something. Only way i see Berry possibly getting picked is if he falls to 11…McD and the staff will have to make a decision on taking the best player on the board…

  41. TheRoyalBeast says:

    rkymtnhigh

Good eye. never noticed…or should i say, never cycled. The beast sure enough isnt there. Everyone else is tho for the most part. Everyone else that started the year with us last year, and is still on the team this year. Only people not on there are mid season acquisitions, offseason acquisition and people that have been cut recently (Andra, Peterson, Simms, etc)

Cant be because of the tender either because like you say, Orton, Doom, heck, even sheffler, is on there….

While this may seem like a drastic jump to conclusions, or seeing something that isnt there. This is the biggest indication that Marshall will no longer be a bronco. Meaning they have every intentions of getting rid of him not unless, somethign ridiculously unexpected happens….Some may say…DUH!!! but still, I know its not a mistake by the web team and its like…WOW lol

  42. Cali_BroncosFan says:

Im all for Chrales Scott in the 4th round!!! The guy runs through the middles with no fear.

    1. Mike Iupati
    2. J.D. Walton
    3. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
    4. Charles Scott
    6. ?????????????
    7. ?????????????

  43. Cali_BroncosFan says:

I think I found a decent OL we should look at in the later rounds

    Mike Johnson(Alabama)

  44. broncosfreak30 says:

I am just worried b/c I do not think that we’re going to be able to address every need in the draft, obviously…AHHHHH I need the draft to hurry and get here…its hurting my college grades right now reading all the news and drama each and every day…haha

  45. MarshMelo15 says:

I have always liked McNabb and think he is a really good QB. That would really suck to see him get traded to the Raiders both for himself and for us Bronco fans. It’s bad enough we split the season series with the Raiders the past two years and that was with JaMarcus Russel at the helm. With a good QB under center they could win both games. Poor McNabb, he deserves way better then some joke of a team in the Raiders and Al Davis.

  46. broncosfreak30 says:

Okay guys, I DEFINITELY just changed my first round draft pick selection…I agree that we need Iupati!! He is amazing and is a MONSTER. I watched a you tube video and he allowed 0 sacks in 807 plays!!! That speaks for itself. We will have for sure the best o-line this year and could open up the running game. I still think we should take Gerhart with our 2 rnd pick. With that o-line and Gerharts trucking/power style will be unstoppable…trust me on this!

  47. broncosfreak30 says:

The only bad thing for people wanting Gerhart to be a Bronco, including myself, is they have him projected as going late 1st/early 2nd and the jets also scheduled him to a private workout which have close to the last 1st round pick!!! That could hurt…

  48. MarshMelo15 says:

For those of you who insist that Gerhart will be a great NFL player you need to remind yourselves that he has not even set foot on the NFL level. Yes, he did have a good college career and yes he is a strong back, BUT, that was in college v.s. a bunch of guys who have no chance at playing on the ELITE level. I mean seriously Ryan Leaf was a great college player, heck even Jarvis Moss was a great college player……….. I’m just sayin….. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch….or however that saying goes

  49. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Cali_Bronco

You know I am with you all the way…except for the second pick. Would Like Spikes, or the first pick, would like McClain. But if no ILB your draft of 2 OL first would be my next fave. And you already know I am with you on Akwasi and Charles Scott. You are right, Charles runs with such power and impressive in game speed. He is just what we need to move the chains, and maybe even do more. Who knows Maybe we will get a extra 2nd or 3rd and be able to get both Walton and Spikes. Spikes slipped even further down after his pro day slow 40. Would be a dream but this is all any mans guess.

Mike Johnson was a part of a leading rushing team, he helpped make it happen, like u say. would be a great later round addition if possible.

  50. broncosfreak30 says:

I am going on college level, i UNDERSTAND he has not played in the NFL. Good god, how many times am I going to be told that…basically then we shouldn’t get anyone because they have no NFL experience. I am saying the effort and success that he has showed in college, it looks like he could have the same kind of success in the NFL. Basically you’re saying for no one to be excited whoever we get because they haven’t proven themselves at the professional level yet. They’re percentages for different players to have success in the NFL and I think he has a high percentage to do great in the NFL!!!

Everyone is going off of their college experiences and NO ONE is “counting their chickens before they hatch”. They go off what they see in their college career!
