Elvis Dumervil, fresh off a season in which he led the league and set a Broncos franchise record with 17 sacks, won the NFL Alumni’s award for pass rusher, as voted by former players.
Each former player voted for current players at the positions they once played themselves.
Dumervil finished the season with 49 tackles, four passes defensed, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
He is joined on the defensive side of the ball by Minnesota’s Jared Allen, San Francisco’s Patrick Willis and Green Bay’s Charles Woodson. The offensive recipients of the alumni award were New Orleans’ Drew Brees, Tennessee’s Chris Johnson, Houston’s Andre Johnson, Indianapolis’ Dallas Clark and Minnesota’s Steve Hutchinson. On special teams, Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs was the recipient, and New Orleans’ Sean Payton was the coaching award winner.
The 2009 awardees will be honored at the 28th Annual Player of the Year Awards Dinner on Feb. 5 in Hollywood, Fla. Each recipient will receive his NFL Alumni Player of the Year Award from a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I LOVE ME SOME KING DOOM!!!!!
doom rocks!! D player of the year!
How about we call him “the Doominator”!!!!!!?
I certainly hope Brian Xanders is working on a new contract for Elvis…
I’m pretty sure they will do what they can to bring him back, the only problem right now is the approaching uncapped year which most teams have no idea what to do with and is really making the process longer as teams try to look at all the variables so they dont have to over pay severely.
OC, I love the Doominator.
It is one of those things when you wonder, now why didn’t I think of that. Kudos.
i just saw on nfl.com that josh cribs wants to leave the browns. if we are gonna send marshall packing then sending him there for cribs, and maybe a second rounder or something wouldnt make me mad
well done Doom!
cant wait to see how our second year players will perform..
Ayers was coming towards the end of the season..Phonsi is being pressured playing behind some the greatest DBs in the game…who’d have thought Leon Hall or Darrell Revis would become top CBs after poor 1st seasons..well Leodis Mckelvin is coming off late…Tye Hill has been an disappointment…But Alphonso will be better years to come..no pressure,,we still have Goodman and Bailey at 1 and 2.
Mcbath showed he was a playmaker along with Bruton (on special teams)
sad to see Barrett getting passed off…
with and uncapped year,,imagine all the possibilities?? Lets develop Brandstater, I wouldnt say he is another tom brady, but I like his mechanics during the offseason…plus he has the ideal size…keep Orton.
Draft defense..Mays, Mclain and Cody prefered.
McClain is definately the guy if he falls to us… We need help stopping the run and then I hope we improve that defensive line because we really were awful there late in the season. I also would like to see Brandstater develop a little bit this next season.
Cribbs for Marshall??? Doesn’t make sense. He will command the same amount of money as the Beast. Or fairly close. Not to mention we have our own explosive returner in Royal. B-Marsh is also a proven WR where Cribbs is not. I wouldn’t mind seeing Bolden from AZ. But, if McDaniels has showed us one thing its that nothing will happen if it doesn’t benifit his “team” concept. It might prove difficult to get a player and picks in a trade this time. Who knows, we may all be surprised and Bowlen pays the man!
Congrats to Doominator!!! Lets hope the accolades continue. He should be first in line for the big contract. And if history is any reliable indicator, its a good thing Shanny isnt here or we would watch another DL leave via free angency. The likes of Berry and Hayward and Pryce! Replaced with the likes of Jarvis and the Browns castoffs…lol. I liked Engleberger though. Again, way to go Dumervil. It was an awesome season watching that man play
Brand”starter” is at least another year away from even being considered a backup. Orton will be here as long as he stays healthy. Remember, it took Qb’s 3 year before flourishing in Shanny’s system- Elway won the superbowl; Griese had a ridiculous 90 something passer rating, Jake the snake became no mistake Jake and Suckler put up some eye popping numbers his 3rd year (especially red zone picks).
Give it some time. If we can run the ball on a consistent basis and stop the run as well, the sky is the limit!
Doominator, OC you are the man, always coming up with the coolest visual descriptions in all your game posts. I think you have a winner here, the Doominator it is for me, but I’ll probably still use Doom most of the time for short.
3 QBs that have impressed me in college football this season are Dan LeFevour, Jevon Snead, and Pike…all can sling the ball hard.
But, I still hope Brandstater develops well.
Interesting. Julius Peppers could be traded. Him with Doom would create havoc for offenses.
broncos20: I think that we should get Peppers, or at least a solid veteran defensive end. We need some dominant lineman on the defensive side. That would take the pressure off Doom, or vice versa.
I personally think that we should keep Orton for at least 2-3 more years, and we’ll see if Brandstater is ready then. I don’t want to draft a rookie quarterback and then start him, because most of the time, they don’t do that well. This year, 3 teams had rookie quarterbacks (New York Jets, Mark Sanchez. Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Josh Freeman) Except for the Jets, the other teams had bad seasons. The only reason the Jets are in the playoffs is that the Bengals let them in, and Sanchez has the #1 defense. I don’t want to see us do that bad next year. Let’s groom Brandstater into a good QB, and then we have a QB for the future.
In the draft, we need someone who can stop the run. I say we get McClain in the first round, and Cody in the second round if he is available. They both went to Alabama, and would work good together. What do you guys think?
There you go, who knows greatness better than former greats themselves? Yes, Doom deserves this. Replicate this performance next season, Elvis. Thou art the man! GO BRONCOS!!!
Elvis did a great job this year. The Broncos had better know what a fantasic player they have in Dumervil and give him a great contract. To lose him to another team would be a huge mistake. Way to go Elvis! Here is to Dumervil being in Broncos orange and blue in 2010 and setting a new sack record!!!!
very true DR92,
Peppers in Denver would be amazing.
i think everyone has great hopes for Branstater. I’d place our future on him after a couple of years…but better hurry up…Champ Dawkins and crew aren’t getting any younger..dont want our offense to start going and have to wait for a new group of defensive stars….
drafting defense is the ideal way to go…a linebacker (especially a MLB) is never a risky pick…Mclain will be a great pick either way..
this year is uncapped, everyone will be making serious moves…
Pepper in Denver would be a major mistake. He’s a 4-3 lineman, not a 3-4 lineman. He was making noises about wanting to be traded because his current team was considering going to 3-4.
no oldsouthstander, I believe he wanted to move to team that was was using a 3-4 defense. hence, he wanted to be traded to Cowboys this last preseason…he clearly stated he wanted to try standing up playing…
you could search any article about him last season and he stated he wanted to try a 3-4 defense…
Hopefully Doomsday is upon the opposition each and every week next year. LOL.
I think that we need a down lineman for the defense. We don’t have anyone on there that is really good.
First of all congrats to Doom. I tell you what for switching to a new position and learning both the DE and OLB position in the 3-4 he had an outstanding year. A guy like Doom really helps open the doors on defense. “Oh there in a 3-4, oh no #92 putting his hand on the ground 4-3 what do I do now, oh man who’s going to be rushing…..what’s my assignment, I’m scared…mommy!!!” LOL! That’s what he can do with his versatility.
Look, I wouldn’t mind seeing Brandstater too. McD isn’t going to throw his young project into the fire. I see Orton for 2-3 more years as a Bronco. Maybe after next season we see more of Brandstater. Who knows mabye Orton becomes Brandstater’s backup in a couple of seasons. Remember though how Brady and Cassel both got their names out there. Bledsoe got injured..Brady took over, Brady got injured…Cassel started in his place. I know Orton isn’t Brady but from that aspect, McD likes to take some time with his QBs. Plus this place would get flooded with comments after/if Brandstater stunk it up…he’s only a rookie. There are few times when you should just throw your rookie into the fire, if it was Manning, if you have absolutly no one else, if you built a time machine and new for certain that he would pay off. j/k. Look Brandstater will get his shot I bet, we just have to be patient.
Peppers would be a good addition. I think we need a NT first and foremost. IMO having or not having a good NT can make or break the 3-4. Peppers would be a good combo with Doom I’ll give you that. Man the pass rush would be crazy. I really hope we can get someone in the draft as a NT or any d-lineman. Moss and Thomas really haven’t made anything too much of what they we’re hyped to do.
Back to the Orton thing, I could see Simms gone, and just having Orton#1, Brandstater#2, and maybe pick up a better veteran behind Brandstater. Simms just didn’t prove anything when he was in there, I think he’ll probably be done in Denver and maybe even retire.
Go Broncos!!!!
watching the playoffs when your team isn’t in them means nothing to me. I feel all cold and empty inside. I also get mad because I see plays where I would be like our D would’ve stopped them. Our team could of beat them. sighhhhh…..Who’s all going to be on here for the long offseason? Just curious. Even in the offseason of bloggin’, what offseason, I practice typing so I can be an effective blogger. LOL!!! Ok, I’m done with the jokes….for now.
oldsouthstander, you are usually correct in your posts, and since you take the time to correct me when I err, I will do the same, Pepper in the off-season didn’t want to play in the 4-3 anymore because he thought he would excel in a 3-4, Broncos 20 is right on this one.
Brian, I’ll be here. I still want to talk about the Broncos. What do you think the Broncos should do about the NT position? Should they get a veteran or draft a rookie (Cody)?
I just came up with an idea. What if we do a 3-way trade with NE, WAS, and us. We give WAS Marshall, WAS gives NE draft picks, and we get Wilfork and mabye a few low round picks. Thoughts?
@DoomervilRocks92: I think that is one of the many million dollar questions this offseason. Every was talking about Suh, IMO, he’ll be first pick to the Rams, so out of the question. He’s not worth trading THAT far up to get. If Cody is still on the board I say we have to take him. He’s a very good player, and I’m not for taking the “best player” I’m for taking “team needs.” We need a force in the middle of our d-line.
Now maybe we dont’ go that route but look into trying to get Wilfork, I think he’s a FA this season and he’s a Patriot that is good, so I could see McD trying to go after him.
Honestly I think a lot of what we do depends of what we do with Marshall. If we trade him and get some picks maybe we try to go for Wilfork or just take our pick at #10. I just don’t know how much you really gain by trading up we’re already in teh top 10 which is a very good pick.
Like McD says, no sense in talking draft before we know what we accomplish in the free agency, it’s like putting the carriage before the horse type of thing. I definitely start looking for a nose in free agency, like Wilfork, and if it fails, then we know we need one in the draft, it’s not rocket science.
This is the list fo nose tackles to go after in free agency:
1. Vince Wilfork, N-E
2. Aubrayo Franklin, Niners
3. Casey Hamton, Steelers
4. Ryan Pickett, Packers
All great against the run, if we fail at getting anyone of these, then set your eyes on a nose tackle in the draft.
Hampton.
This is how their teams rated in stopping the run in the league this year (not that the nose tackle does it all, but he is obviously a big part):
Packers: 1
Steelers: 3
Niners: 6
Patriots: 13
This is how we rated in stopping the run: 26.
We need a force in the middle of the line that’ll take on double teams and get a push so the o-lineman can’t get to the second level and tak out our LBs. That’s what happened when we started failing to stop the run. Our LBs were getting blocked because the down lineman weren’t getting any kind of push to slow or stop them. So I pretty much told you what you already knew. LOL!
I think the Broncos should hire all of us for GMs just for this season. We’d get it done.
Interesting that Franklin from the 49ers is a FA. I heard a rumor that they will try to acquire Marshall. We need a good NT, maybe a trade in the works, who knows? I agree that we should get proven veterans on the line first and then look into the draft if we can’t work anything out in FA. I will be keeping my eye on Cody tonight. That guy is huge 6-5, 365 lbs or something like that. What I’m hearing is that most scouts would prefer he were around 340 though and that his stamina late in games is in question.
If we can get wilfork in FA and McClain in the draft along with Iuptati Guard from Idaho then i will consider this offseason a win. and a big one at that!
Brian_Schneider! LMFAO!!!!
That would be great! Could you see that?
Here’s how it would sound;
“Look Pat, this is what we got to do….”
Pat B: “I’m sorry, who were you again?”
“Oh, my bad…just call me Baylin for short! Seriously, Pat it’s all about the NT at this time!”
“Yeah Pat, we have a veteran filled secondary with outstanding leadership. NT is something we have to address in free agency first!”
Pat B: “uh….and who you might be?”
“Sorry Mr. B, I’m one of your new GM’s….just shout at OC for short! Listen, to keep this short Me and Baylin are speaking on behalf of Brian_Schneider, 07Elway, Broncfalls, Broncofanlvm, oldsouthstander (this guys freakin’ crazy you need to listen to him he CRACKS me up!, DoomervilRocks92, sndvl, broncos20, McdanDare, casinoroyal19 (sounds kinda gangster huh?) and broncochick1. Now most of us GM’s have never met broncochick1 but the name suggests that we might want to listen! Get what I’m saying Mr. B???
you’ve already seen 07Elway at fan fair so that’s a no brainer! Plus she rolls with Coop so we don’t want to piss him off!
Pat B: “….uh….o.k….um……should I get Josh Mac in here for this meeting?”
Baylin: “uh…….no! Actually he’s not available! We sent him to anger management classes in Argentina wiht Marshall and Scheffler!…..don’t worry we got this! oh and 1 other thing, Mr. B, starting next season, I’ll need your picks in no later than Thursday morning! Unfortuanetly, if you don’t listen to your GM’s, it could be the difference on whether you make it or not on the “WALL OF SHAME!”
OC : “….so…Mr. B could you do me a favor? get me 2 things. A phone and Bill Belichek’s cell phone number! I got an idea!”
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
…..just kinda how I see the meetings @ Dove Valley going
Brilliant, LMAO…. very funny, futuristic, science fiction, but oh so real. Brian is right, we can do it! LOL. However, broncfalls, you got misinformed about the class McD is attending in Argentina, it is not an anger management class, it’s a how to become a leader of men class and Marsh and Scheff are simply attending a how to have class class. LOL.
Baylin, LOL! I stand corrected! LOL you’re right!
good stuff!
BTW, talking about the wall of shame, the other day I attempted to post the yearly compilation of the score predictions, but it took so long for the blog administration to post it that I think everybody missed it, so here it is again for the ones who care:
Guys, since I kept a record of the 14 weeks that we made our score predictions (I did not start this contest until the third week), I thought it would be fun to look at it as a whole and see who knew what they were talking about, if any, LOL, and who really stunk up the joint and ended up on the wall of shame, LOL. Congrats to everyone, all the other ones not listed just didn’t make it enough to make a splash. Hope you had fun with this all year, I sure did, who knows, maybe we’ll do it all again next year, we’ll have to wait and see how motivated I get.
Attention: Blog administration, I don’t get how the blog review system works, what I just tried to post was already cleared and posted on a previous blog, but too late for anyone to see it. Please try to post this one before the blog is off the blog page, now would be good, thanks.
Dumervil—–well done! you deserve this and more for your perservence and effort. We are proud to have you on the Denver Broncos.
On another note. I am trying to work my way out of the slight depression after the K.C. loss. So lets talk about possible FAs. Josh Cribbs wants a new home check it out. http://twitter.com/NFLFanHouse/statuses/7464418608
We need Eddie to grow into the slot guys we all want lets get Cribbs on Special Teams and special packages. I am sure there is a cost. I am super excited to see what happens this off season.
Thank you, much appreciated.
@Broncfalls: LMFAO!!! Oh man now that some funny stuff right there. That’s exactly how it would go too. I think our best bet would to probably get Elway and Rod on our side first. LOL!!
I think first of all our return blocking needs to improve. Royal’s two TD returns had one thing in common….good blocking. Cibbs may be a better return man but Royal’s good too. At the WR spot hopefully Royal will get more invovled. Cribbs will come with a hefty cost. I think we’d be better off investing that money into some D-lineman.
Fantasy:
You know I think instead of rookies and young guys coming in and sayin’ “show me the money”, the franchises need to say in return, “show me some talent, show me some accountability, show me some dicipline, show me some team unity, and finally show me that you’re a man.”
Reality:
The players “I’ll show you mine, but first show me yours.”
The franchise “Ok”
Hey guys/gals,
Just wanted to throw this out there. Did any of you feel the “humbleness” in JMac at his season ending press conferences?
We all have been critical on various aspects of this season. I’m just wondering if JMac finally got a little reality check.
It was the first time, I truely think he realized some things (not all but some) could have been different starting with him.
Also, I read into that press conference almost a “it had to be this way” mentality. Did any of you feel he was suggesting the “tough love” concept had to set the tone? Because he later mentioned that this next season shouldn’t be like that because the team now knows what to expect?
Me personally, I have a feeling this is going to be even a more dangerous team next year. With the system entering it’s 2nd year. The staff & players KNOW what has to happen.
Hometeam007, I am with you! This off season is going to be CRAZY! I bet the broncos make ANOTHER huge off season splash!
Lastly, Doominator (LOL) it is a privelage to have you wearing the Orange and Blue! Although I know individual achievements are second on your list behind team accomplishments but know this! We fans enjoy watching you on Sunday!!!!! Congratulations on being with such an elite bunch of players! You enjoy it and take a minute, pat yourself on the back for an outstanding year!
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
bay…
You get 3x first and I get 3x worst? That makes you the big winner and I get the wall of shame? I should have never let my point spread get over 10, I suppose?
You can keep the Cutler blankie..eh, jersey…lol, but I’ll do this. If we are both able to blog here next year? I’ll put up a new Dumervil Jersey to the winner…
I had a great time blogging here this season. I like that there are not a lot of haters here to argue with but I think there is a silent requirement to do some cheerleading in these pages to keep from getting on blog probation?
I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS!!!!!!!
I think it’s going to be an exciting offseason again…
OC, you go all out, in your picks and with your colorful commentaries, that’s what we dig you for, man, but it did get you the overall wall of shame record for the year, not that I was going to mention it, but since you did… LOL. I have no complaints, once a while they will screen some of my comments, and it does happen that they just won’t post it, but I try to keep the line of communication open and I really haven’t had any problem with it other than sometimes the mediation process is frustrating as far as keeping discussions fluent. The head of the blog has been really nice to e-mail me a couple times to apologize over issues I have had, I can’t ask for more. Cheerleading is obviously encouraged here and I can see why, they are running a business and need to keep things looking glass half full rather than half empty. I welcome the opportunity to voice my opinion here and I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to do that as long as I’m up for it. I have noticed a few of the bad apples have gotten the axe, they are simply now absent from this website and I can’t say I miss them.
@baylinorcrush: You have my support to continue doing picks next season. I know I dropped off and that is my own fault. I started getting down after the bye week and stop predicting. Sometimes I feel that if I predict and then the team loses it is a real letdown. I’d predict every game next season if you’re feeling up to it. If not that’s ok too.
I go on the wall of shame for quitting.
Brian, I understand and completely agree with you about the show me something first, but unfortunately there is a league formula for what draft picks are going to get come contract signings based on how soon and what round they are getting drafted in. The biggest variance is when calculating the true value w/ trades, draft picks, etc. It’s almost as disappointing learning the details as to how the schedules are made, with the exception of the preseason, games are figured by a chart.
Nice one DOOM. Hope the guys upstairs give him a nice fat contract.
I hope that someone else on the D steps it up in getting sacks. Not to take away from Dumervil’s sack total, but it would help get people thinking about that other person instead of just where Dumervil is all the time. It would be even better if the whole D started sacking people.
I hope that we see Orton back next year at least. I don’t know about you, but Simms isn’t worth a starting job and I’d hate to see Brandstater Boo’d at during the season. The jump from College to the Pro’s is ridiculous for QB’s and just rookies in general. I can see eventually Orton serving as a Backup QB in the future, because we can all probably agree that He’s deserving enough to be 2nd string and a safe start if our future franchise starter goes down, whoever that starter may be. I’ll have to wait and see how next year plays out though. If he gets in a groove and starts trusting his arm to and all his recievers, we might be surprised. And I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but If the Dallas Cowboys can have room to run 3 RB’s dominantly (Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice) why can’t we? Payton Hillis, Correll Buckhalter, and Knowshon Moreno could be the 3 we can easily rotate.
That would definitely open up the passing game. Did anyone notice that when both Marion Barber and Felix Jones were hurt Romo wasn’t doing all that good? and now that they’re fully healthy Romo isn’t feeling any pressure and is playing some great ball? Not saying we should be Dallas, but what works works, and we could definitely use what works to open up our passing game. Remember when we got Terrell Davis to do work? Elway had a much easier time and we won 2 SB’s from it, almost 3. Our team can be that good again, we just have to go back to how it was before.
ahah…funny enactment BroncoFalls..good one..
Baylin, oh mann, you should have your own blog on this website..a guru amidst us…lol
i would prefer we acquire a NT in FA. Taking NTs early in the draft havent been so affective, they need 2-3 years to break out…Instead we get a proven veteran and get our future NT in the mid rounds. I think we still have a BIG Chris Baker with us. Surely he’ll get his reps soon. As for Cody, I have to wait and see how he performs tonight in the BCS. Some say he is not affective against spread offenses..
Peppers to Denver please…lol
