Dumervil Making Big Plays in Big Spots

November 19th, 2012 - 11:31am by Sam Davis

Clutch has been a common theme in defensive end Elvis Dumervil’s last five sacks, which date back to the start of Denver’s current five-game win streak.

Dumervil has five sacks in the last five games. Four of them have caused the opposing quarterback to fumble and all five have ended opponent drives – with two ending the game.

Going back to the team’s first matchup with San Diego in Week 6, his pair of second-half strip sacks were a catalyst in the 24-point comeback. His first one was recovered by cornerback Tony Carter, who took it 65 yards to the end zone to cut the Chargers’ lead to 10.

The second time Dumervil jarred the ball loose from Philip Rivers was the last time the Chargers quarterback would hold it that night. With less than a minute remaining in the game, Dumervil ended any hopes San Diego had of winning the game. He recorded the fourth-down strip sack and handed the ball to the offense, which ended the game from the victory formation.

In Cincinnati, Andy Dalton was the only quarterback to withstand a Dumervil sack without fumbling since Matt Schaub of Houston in Week 3. Still, it came on a third down late in the fourth quarter and forced the Bengals to settle for three.

Dumervil’s Week 10 sack on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was also followed up with a touchdown. This time, Newton recovered the fumble but Carolina was forced to punt. Wide receiver Trindon Holliday took that punt 76 yards for the score.

And at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Sunday, Dumervil once again shut the door on the Chargers’ hopes of a comeback. He sacked Rivers on the final play of the game in which San Diego was hoping to attempt a Hail Mary pass, securing the season sweep of San Diego.

While linebacker Von Miller leads the league with 13 sacks, there is a good chance Denver isn’t 7-3 with a three-game division lead if not for Dumervil’s clutch pass rushing as well.

Von Doom is proving to be an extremely lethal duo!! It’s very exciting that we’ll have two different players with double digit sacks this year!! You have to know Doom will get most likely at least one sack a piece in each of the KC games and most likely more, along with Miller!

Here’s to Offensive MVP – Manning and Defensive MVP – Miller!!!!!

The Orange Crush is back baby!

  2. Orange_Crusher says:

Does anybody know how bad Wolfe’s and McGahee’s injuries are?

  3. broncosfreak718 says:

    Orange..

I’ve heard that the Front Staff didn’t think they were serious but I don’t know for sure yet.

  4. HAYNBOI96743 says:

McGahee has a torn MCL and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Big blow to the RB corps. Maybe JJ comes up from the practice squad? Haven’t heard anything on Wolfe, maybe just a stinger cause he went back in. Heres hoping

  5. alaskanbronco06 says:

Wolfe isnt that bad as he came back into the game.

McGahee has a torn MCL out 6-8 weeks.

  6. alaskanbronco06 says:

LOL same time same source lol

Anyways Von and Doom are the best two pass rusher duos in the NFL. Most teams you can take their 4 best pass rushers and their stats dont match up to VOn and Doom.

As for McGahees injury. JJ I think will be called up and we might see Moreno AND JJ active as well as Ball and Hillman.

  7. alaskanbronco06 says:

Jay Glazer is now reporting that he also has a leg fracture.

  8. socalbigbrincofan says:

The big question is can we run the ball with the other rb’s and without Mcgahee. Mcgahee would be lucky to make it in time for the playoffs.

  9. OTbroncos says:

Tough loss, but injuries are a part of the game. Next man up. Time to call JJ up, and may the best guys play. Time to show us what you got Knowshon. Kuper being back will have a positive impact on the run game IMO.

  10. OTbroncos says:

Xavier Omon is still a free agent btw.

  11. alaskanbronco06 says:

OT I know about Omon lol when McGahee went down that was the first thing I said to my Bronco friends lol

  12. raidrhadr says:

Well I think Ball will carry the load and Hillman stays the change of pace back or even split carries/touches. Ball made an outstanding adjustment/block on Decker’s TD. That kind of thing will keep him on the field more. I just hope Knowshon won’t disappoint us again. Maybe JJ gets some touches too. Love to see that. Next man up!!

  13. OTbroncos says:

I know you were an Omon fan AB. He’s a big back, that’s for sure. I’d be down if we went that route. I’d like for Hillman to get more carries, to get acclimated. It often takes a RB to get consistent work to get in the zone.

  14. raidrhadr says:

Big Al is going off on NFL network. Love Alfred Williams.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Well my long time fears about our running game have come to pass….

  16. raidrhadr says:

So now…What roster moves do we make to clear room for JJ to come up or do we just move forward with Ball, Hillman and Moreno while waiting for Mcgahee to heal and come back for the playoffs? I know I have an idea or two about who we should wave.

  17. OTbroncos says:

Well, at least we have a creative play caller to compensate for the loss……………..

  18. RH709 says:

Broncos will work out former Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton.

  19. raidrhadr says:

RH…according to who? I like Slaton but again I present the question to everyone: What roster moves do we make to clear room for RB X…whoever that is?

  20. raidrhadr says:

btw…on a unrelated note. Does everyone else think that the bubble screen needs to be put on the back burner? (went for pick 6 yesterday…almost twice)

  21. raidrhadr says:

Bay…what OT says and the fact we have PFM may still be enough. Getting Kuper healthy is more important really. I think we both agree that RB will be addressed early in next years draft and FA.

  22. RH709 says:

    Jason Lacanfoya (sp)

What roster move? Cut the FB. He is useless in a manning offense.

  23. RH709 says:

@raidrhadr, that wasn’t the bubble screen. That was a quick slant into the area vacated by a blitzer. In both cases (they were identical), Manning didn’t have enough protection to pick up the blitz so he threw to the area the blitz came from.

  24. OTbroncos says:

Does anyone know how the new IR rules apply to designating a player to return? Is there a limit on how many players can receive this designation? If so, have we already reached the maximum? Are there any other restrictions? And finally, will this scenario work with respect to McGahee?

  25. RH709 says:

Personally, unless someone that comes to workout for the team is somehow head and shoulders above what we have, I doubt Denver makes any changes. Slaton is the same size/weight combo as Hillman and doesn’t know the plays. If you are going to replace McGahee you want someone with the bulk to pick up a 3rd/4th and 1/2 yards. The other guys on the team will be fine in all other situations.

  26. RH709 says:

I believe there is an IR but eligible to return. not sure how it works though.

  27. RH709 says:

Starting in 2012, the NFL and the NFLPA reached an agreement allowing one player placed on injured reserve to be brought back to the active roster. Provided the provisions that the player was on the final 53-man preseason roster (A rule exempted for the 2012 season), and that the injury is deemed to keep this player unable to practice or play football for an estimated six weeks, the player may be allowed to practice after Week 6, and be activated to play after Week 8.

  28. alaskanbronco06 says:

As for right now McGahee will remain off of IR. McGahee is working to be back in 4-6 weeks.

Most likely Ball will be the starter with Hillman still coming in for some plays. JJ likely to stay on PS and Moreno go to active. Moreno must step up when he gets his # called.

  29. OTbroncos says:

I’m just wondering about it being limited to one player. I assume we haven’t used this exemption, or if we had plans for another player. I would think McGahee would take precedence over anyone else. Perhaps admin can clarify?

  30. raidrhadr says:

RH…nice work on finding that IR rule. I was thinking of Ray Lewis. NE will probably make the same move for Gronkowski.

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Sorry to hear about McGahee but these things become more likely the older you get. Which was the reason I wanted Doug Martin. A durable RB on the team behind McGahee to take over things. We got hillman tho, and while good, he is far from Durable, much like Knowshon. Ball and JJ are probably our most durable now, but none can get the tough yards McGahee got. I see knowshon getting work. He is the most experienced of the Lot. We will have to address RB again next year … and I mean a durable one. 6-8 Weeks … thats well into the playoffs. Smh. He has come back from injuries fast in the past but MCLs linger.

All is not lost tho. Like has been said, next man up. Or in this case, men as neither can handle the load by themselves, even tho the load has been significantly reduced this year in comparison to last year. Kuper should help things. Glad he is back.

    Later days, TRB

  34. Crush Arizona says:

Knowshawn Moreno……This guy has had more time on the sidelines than any Bronco in history! I can’t believe the way he lit it up in college you’d think he had Gale Sayers Genes….He had had flashes of brilliance and much like led Chrystal he shines but much like the Chrystal he breaks rather easily….GIVE THE ROCK TO HILLMAN AND BALL PERIOD! OH AND ONCE AGAIN WE FIND OUT THAT THE ELECTRIC-HEADS ARE CHEATIN A$$ PLAYERS. THAT HIT ON McG WAS SOOOOOO LOW! INTENTIONAL? YOU KNOW, AND WHAT EVER HAPPENED ABOUT THE STICKY STUFF ON THEIR HANDS FROM THE LAST GAME. WHAT IS THE NFL GUN-SHY NOW AFTER THE LAWSUITS BY THE SAINTS PLAYERS? WELL NUFF OF THAT….I AM STOKELEY’D WE LOOK LIKE WE ARE GONNA CRUISE INTO THE PLAYOFFS. AND THAT LINEBACKER CORPS IS ALLREADY BEING COMPARED TO SOME OF THE GREAT ONES IN HISTORY! THE ORANGE CRUSH IS BACK BABY! AND I’M DARN GLAD TO SEE DJ WILLIAMS BACK LIKE HE NEVER MISSED A BEAT! DEEEEEEEEEEEGGGGG!!! STOP CALLING THEM VON DOOM WHEN YOU KNOW THE ARE THE ORANGE CRUSH REBORN! I WAS JUST VOTING FOR THE PRO-BOWL AND IT SEEMED, NO STRIKE THAT ITS A FACT THE BRONCOS ARE ON THE TOP OR NEAR THE TOP IN STATS FOR NEARLY EVERY SINGLE POSITION. EVEN SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF OUR WHOLE TEAM WENT TO THE PB AFTER WINNING THE SB IF THAT WERE POSSIBLE….OH WELL A GUY CAN WISH CANT HE! GO PONIES SWEEP THE CHEFFS!!

  35. Orange_Crusher says:

TRB….. You are a very smart football mind…. Love your reasonable and well thought out plan…cudos, Bronco Bro!!!! I agree 100%..

    ILMSDB!!!!!

  36. Cheyenne Kid says:

None of the backs we have are good in running between the tackles. If we get too predictable because of this, it’ll be a handicap. Only time will tell of course; but an NFL team has to be able to pick up the tough yardage to be successful on third and short. If Oman is avalable, I sure hope Fox is going to look at him. We have a couple of possibilities to make room if they do that. GoBroncos next Sunday at K.C.!!!!
