With Andrew Mason submitting his first mock draft leading up to this April’s event, we figured the staff at DenverBroncos.com should have a chance to chime in on what we think will happen within the division.
So here are our predictions (read: guesses) for the first-round picks of the Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders and Broncos.
We’ll post a new blog with updated picks every time Mason updates his full first-round mock.

Lovin the fact denvers lookin at manti te’o hes jus another beast added to the Big Orange Crush!
I would be VERY unhappy if we draft Teo….all you have to do is look at his play in the Bama game…
Lots and lots of Bronco fans feel the same….
Anyone that reduces a college career to one game … knows nothing about football. I know people will say there were other games … but the only one people mention is the Bama game. Whole D got dominated. Bama got one of the best OLs. OL own your DL good luck to your LBs. Ask Von in Ravens game. None the less, Teo like most rookies need alot of work, get better at wrapping up and shedding blocks much like alec ogletree and most rookie LBs. He however has good instincts and reaction time even tho he runs a 4.8. OTAs and camps will get him in better shape and the rest can be taught but you cant teach instinct/awareness. If we don’t get him thats cool but if we doo, I believe we will have a solid starter for years. IMO. Good kid minus whole hoax thing unlike many other LBs in draft and players period. I remember a couple years back many of us wanted Rolando McClain from bama, my self included, he has under performed and constantly gotten into trouble and the raiders are either looking to drop him or trade him. And he was taken at number 9, at 28, its low risk high reward in my book. You don’t see Von Miller at 28. All you can hope for is a productive starter, anything more is a blessing. I like Where Stuart Zas head is. Really wish we had a shot at Shariff Floyd … but them the breaks.
TRB
Unless Te’o can show a lot in his pro day that he didn’t show in the combine, I’d much rather see us take a DT or give Manning a new toy to play with. while MLB wasn’t fantastic last year I also don’t think its gonna lose us games because of how great or nickel package is. I think we should just take the best player available, and I don’t think the Te’o we’ve seen so far is going to be that player at the 28th pick.
Hankins intrigues me too and Marqus hunt of course … not real big on sylvester tho.
TRB
TRB the Bama game is the best example because it was the whole game. Also during that game you cant say the DL of ND didnt do their job. I just watched the game again and the DL was actually the only decent aspect from ND.
Also Teo isnt ready for the NFL. After his bad 40 he blamed it on being fatigued from the whole process. What a stupid and lame excuse. Every player is exhausted at that point yet no one else blames a bad 40 tie on fatigue. The combine is done in so few days to mimic the short time time you have during the NFL season week, where you have a lot to get done but few days. Also the fact you bring up the Ravens game and how our DL really got beat up where Von couldnt do his thing is a big reason we need a DT. Not a MLB who is hot and cold as it is but cant perform up to standards against bigger OLs and misses tackles on bigger RBs. This is the NFL. You dont see many weaker OLs like in college and where there are big backs and even a lot of little backs that are hard to bring down. Teo is a smart player, dont get me wrong, but when you fail as bad as he did against the one college team that is most NFL like that just doesnt bode well to entering the NFL.
RH on the last blog you mention how Del Rios DTs are supposed to stop the run. I dont disagree with that. However I think any DC wants DTs that can push the interior of the pocket as well as stop the run. We have Doom and Miller already yes but just imagine what they could do if we had a guy in the interior pushing back the pocket. Also having that guy can really make the difference in our DL controlling the game and the opposing OL.
What I mean by whole game is in other games (Stanford Purdue USC) he has very hot and cold. He had some big plays and the mistakes he did where hidden beneath the good.
Strand if your out there Byrd got tagged by the Biils. Not surprising. It was expected.
Tony Carter allowed fewest completions among Corners with over 60 targets. Only 27 allowed.
I like LeVon Bell as well. I was worried about his speed and was proven wrong. Some have him as a mid/late 2nd rounder now.
Please god no te’o he is friggen overrated, and im not even talking about that bama game.
He had 0, turnovers coming into his senior year, and most of his picks were off tips or thrown directly at him by QBs who have no shot in the league
I’m against Te’o but not cause I think he was “exposed” by bama. I’m against the pick because the direction our defense is going. Today’s NFL is a passing league and Te’o is a down hill run stuffing LB. Not the mold we are looking for. Guys like Danny Trevathan are increasingly more useful when teams try to spread a field. Te’o is not built for that.
Based on realistically who I think will be available, if the draft were held today, I’d like Desmond Trufant at #28. Let’s not forget there will be many players brought in to compete for a spot on the team through free agency, the draft, as well as undrafted players. The first pick in the draft doesn’t have to address your biggest need, as that approach is short sighted and often leads to mistakes. Trufant has bloodlines in the NFL and is a 6’0″ corner, who is fast and with good coverage skills. Safe pick, getting a quality player at an increasingly important position, who can be effective vs the bigger WR in this league.
Trufant would also benefit from learning from Champ ala Osweiler and Manning.
Swapping out Porter and Trufant would create some cap space as well.
Thanks Alaska! Yeah Figures! LOL
Looks like some mocks have Trufant gone before we pick and the Post has him listed a hair under 6’0″, but so is Bailey. Harris is 5’10″ and Tony Carter is 5’9″, and I expect both back, and Bolden is 5’10″. There are bigger corners out there, and won’t be opposed to that either, but 6’0″ is our tallest corner right now.
AB, All rookies have stuff to work on coming into the NFL
FA will tell us a lot about our direction. No matter where Teo goes, I know he is gonna prove his skeptics run. Everyones just turned him to the underdog and I love rooting for them.
They say he had a bad combine … what a joke. Did you know his vert was the the same as Alec and Minter? Alec ran 4.72, Minter ran in the 4.8s. 20yrd shuttle was superior to both alec and minter. He was better at the cone drill than both minter and alec. His broad jump coulda been better I suppose. He didn’t bench because of his shoulder, his field drills were great, and YET he is the only guy catching flack for a HORRIBLE combine … THATS a joke. Its all perception. Alec and Minter however are being lauded. So his bad combine is based on a 40 dash time and all of a sudden the whole thing is HORRIBLE? What a joke.
TRB
Flacco supposedly signed the biggest QB contract in NFL history … ravens are gonna regret that like a drunken night.
TRB
Of course every rookie does. Didnt say it was just Teo. Also his drills wernt great. They were all similar to Minter and Ogletree but neither of those two had near as high expectations from Teo nor did they need to have a good combine as bad as Teo needed to have a good one.
He is the one catching a lot of flack for a coupe of reason. One reason is everyone expected better from him. Another reason is before the combine he told everyone to forget the girlfriend hoax and judge him by his combine. (And a lot are doing just that) and now after the combine hes telling everyone is was fatigue and that he should be judged by his season except the Bama game. (A little like you seem to be TRB) all he is doing is making excuses and not willing to own up to the bad he has done in the combine and Bama game. Instead he doesnt want anyone to pay attention to it.
Joe Flaccos deal is a 6 year 120+ mil deal.
So FA is just around the corner. I wonder if the Broncos will be active.
120.6 mil 6 year deal for Flacco.
Stuart, I love you and all, but if we take Manti Te’o at #28 I’m going to be sick and we will look like fools! If we thought TEBOW was a distraction, we’ve not seen anything yet!
Flacco owes $30,000,000 of his contract to Rahim Moore.
I like Te’o and if he’s there at 28, I say take him. JDR knows LB.
I still think the Bears will take him anyway. So it might not even be an issue. I’d say get a corner too, but I think Bolden is going to get a shot. And I have a hunch he’ll take advantage of it. I don’t think we’ll go saftey either. My guess is Oline or DT. And I’m anxious to see what we do in FA. Because my gut feeling is we trade back again and stock up some picks. (I do like the Seymour idea… Lol)
Honestly, the combine is just a parade. How many players are on our squad that didn’t even go to the combine?
As for Flacco. I think your wrong TIcat. Maybe 5 mil for Moore. 5 mil for Carter and 20 mil to the refs who officiated that game!
Good evening Ticat.
I don’t recall Teo ever saying anyone should judge him by the combine during the hoax thing … nor did he say judge me by the tape except bama. And im not ignoring bama. Its fully there, you just choose to ignore a college career for one game. Any scout would tell you that’s silly. Much like the idiot analyst that think we need dire CB help because of champs performance in ONE game. You say its not that u don’t like the guy but all you do is trash him with baseless information … saying he gave up on his team, he is not a leader, he is making excuses this that and the third … one moment he is overated, the next moment “MORE” was expected out of him. Gimme a break. But to each his own on the whole Teo thing. Its just become a pile on Teo event much like it was for Tebow and Cam Newton to name a few once combine came around. His combine .. wasn’t HORRIBLE if it was it would mean every other LBs were horrible. His numbers were better than the other 2 top ILBs who for some reason are still considered first rounders. Face it, the kid is news and since the HOAX thin dropped its been lets pile on him. Im not even an ND fan, I won’t claim to watch as much College ball as im sure u do, but one minute he is lauded, hoax hits and its lets pile on the guy.
TRB
haha cat thats hilarious!! he sure does owe moore! pretty funny.
trb i also have been harping on not liking teo but my thing is i dont want to spend a 1st round pick on him. i dont think he will be bad and i think what you are saying is pretty much right but he’s just not a 1st round talent. if he was there at our 2nd round pick i’d say grab em. he very well could be a really good mlb for years but he wont be elite and may not even be real good so i dont want to use a high pick. someone will tho and we’ll see.
i sure hope that is not right ab. flacco 6 years $120 mil? are they crazy? he still could revert back to that average qb that plagued their offense for a few seasons. he has been more bad than good and while he very well may have turned the corner and become an elite qb i would have to give that more time. they shoulda franchised him and let him prove another year of stellar play before signing a contract that dang big. holy crap. 120 mil? man.
120? no way.
TRB how many times have I said that he was hot and cold all season? That Stanford USC and Purdue were other bad games? Dont say im ignoring the whole season just for the Bama game. I am not. He was very hot and cold in every game especially those three. Bama was the only game he was ineffective all game. Also his whole career his tackling numbers were good (Due in part to lesser competition) but he didnt have the takeaways till this year. For every big play Teo makes there is a bad mistake. He isnt consistent by any means.
He is a little overrated. He isnt as good as many think he is. He is not a 1st round guy. At the combine more was expected of him. The reason for that is because of the girlfriend hoax. He wanted to shake off the bad press about that and the bad game. The way to start doing that was a good combine. Hence the high expectations. The thing is the higher expectations of him were brought on by himself.
All you have to do is listen to what he says. He has just came out and said dont judge me by the combine but by the season and that the Bama game was a fluke. (Which it wasnt) When the hoax first came out and he finally made a statement about it he said dont judge me for this but judge me for what I will do at the combine. All you have to do is look and listen to his interviews.
You refuse to watch the Bama game TRB. If you did you can see he gave up on the defense. Its there in the film. He didnt try to have that unit play with pride. Instead he lead the way to giving up early in the game and allowed the most pro like offense in NCAA football walk all over them.
Being able to see that in the film and actually pays attention to what he says is baseless information? Its all there. Just watch and listen.
I do like Teo. I wish him well in the NFL. Just not in Denver. I trash him for his play because it isnt as god like as you seem to think.
Also dont even try and say its because the hoax. I said before I paid little to no attention to the whole thing. And the only time I even mentioned it was from him saying not to judge him by it. That has nothing to do with why I dont want him. Take that away and he still isnt as good as everyone thinks. I am judging him by his whole career and combine. Not some stupid fake girlfriend bs.
6 year 120.6 mil LBF. Biggest contract ever.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000146312/article/joe-flacco-baltimore-ravens-agree-to-new-contract
Here is the article about it LBF.
LBF, it is so legit. 120$ for a guy and just wait to see what the Ravens are like in two years. I know people say the same about us, but I think we are in a different situation. Besides, I still have hopes that Peyton restructures.
Eh, Flacco should just the $30 mil to the Broncos and they could split it between themselves. LOL
*give
sndvl you have a point about the combine when you say alot of players not invited do well but the combine is definitely highly relevant. think about some players who came in as later round projected players but after the combine rose to the top of the 1st round and became great nfl players (pierre-paul. rogers-cromartie, etc). that does show just part of the effectiveness of the process. there is some really important information to be had so its not perfect for sure but also not irrelevant in the slightest.
wow. i mean i just dont see it in his body of work. i mean pay the guy, yeah, but thats ridiculous. looks like the ravens didnt even try to get him at only a top 5 qb rate or franchise him and make him prove it for another year. i wouldve offered him between what the 3rd and 4th highest qb is making and if he didnt take it franchise him. and if he does next year what he did this year then okay, give him the money. heck still not that much tho!
Hey, I don’t want Te’o because he GAVE UP! and I’m tired of guys who give up, including Peyton. No more giving up! We gave up as a team and that is not the kind of leadership I want. I want Brian Dawkins back. Some guy who is going to BE IN YOUR FACE because one bad mistake is NOT the end of the world. But they acted like it was and lost the game because of it. We need leadership and Manti has none.
The combine or the “underwear parade” is a compact weekend full of tests and interviews. It is like that to mimic the chaotic packed week during the NFL season. Where you have team meeting and practices. It is supposed to tire you and wear you down. Just so teams can see how you handle yourself during the whole weekend. Also the combine is where top prospects fall and late prospects start their rise. It does what it is supposed to do.
ya cat the broncos late defensive break down should be in the check memo…
LBF, that contract is going to kill the Ravens and what happened to San Diego is going to happen to them. And I don’t want tomatoes thrown in my direction, but Philip Rivers > Joe Flacco and look at the team he has. smh it’s just ridiculous.
Agreed LBF. He isnt worth that at all. A big reason why is because the fact he played so well in the playoffs and lead his team past two teams that everyone wrote him and the Ravens off to make the Superbowl and then a 3rd team that no one gave the Ravens a chance against and beat them to win the Superbowl.
ya ab and maybe he is worth it in a couple years but not now. i just really dont know how the ravens valued him that way right now. but it could work out. and cat trust me that contract is gonna be so backloaded they’ll actually have more room to sign players the next couple years. teams are expecting the cap to go up in a few years so they are taking their high priced players and putting alot of money in the back end when they can absorb it easier. see: tom brady.
LBF the Ravens just made a big mistake IMO. They have serious cap issues as it is and have a lot of FAs they want to bring back. Yet like 80% of their cap space just went to Flacco.
That’s what AB told me. It’s another reason I’m less worried about how we’re going to take care of DT in two years, and Miller after?
these teams must know some inside info to be betting on the cap raise in a few years like they are. maybe it will swell a good bit soon. who knows
well ab if they didnt backload that contract then youre right, they are in trouble. but surely they did.
we’ll know soon enough. the complete details wont take long to emerge
Good point LBF. But I havnt seen the breakdown of it yet. If they did that it isnt as bad as it seems. It will still be bad dont get me wrong just not as bad.
They will emerge sometime after he actually signs the deal.
bottom line to me is he just isnt a $120 mil quarterback yet. thats a tough one. i wonder how the ravens fans are reacting?
