February 28th, 2013 - 11:27am by Stuart Zaas

Broncos Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio is scheduled to speak at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, which takes place on March 1 and 2 in Boston.

The event covers the role of statistics in sports and features keynote speakers from the major professional sports leagues, along with media members from ESPN, Sports Illustrated and the New York Times.

The conference aims to provide a forum for industry professionals and students to discuss the increasing role of analytics in the global sports industry. The conference was open to the public.

Founded in 2006, the conference is co-chaired by Daryl Morey and Jessica Gelman who oversee MIT Sloan students in the planning and operating of the annual conference.

The event is sold out, but parts are being streamed online for a fee. Click here for more information about the webcast.

I’m probably about to get lambasted but I have a question for those demanding Rahims head.If Prater had made the field goal attempt in the first half and we ended up winning by that 3 points, would you still be clamoring for Moores cutting?

  2. OTbroncos says:

I’m for one am glad that our FO is showing loyalty to our two young safeties. I hope we don’t show the same loyalty to our RB’s..

  3. OTbroncos says:

I’ve heard people talk about drafting Kuper’s replacement, fearing Kupe may not get over this recent injury bug. Wonder if anyone had thoughts on that in here.

  4. strandoftds82 says:

This Morning Elway mentioned that he likes where our O-line is at. I heard it with my own ears by John Elway. Is he blowing smoke? That I don’t know.

  5. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

I’m all for going OL/DL in the first couple rounds.Of course it seems out better OL picks have been in the later rounds. The question is,wht’s needed morer?Kupers backup or the guy that allows Franklin to move to guard. In either order.Hopefully Ramirez experience will help him be much improved next year.Would be nice to have another solid backup just in case though.

  6. OTbroncos says:

I hope Kuper can get back to his old self, but I wouldn’t complain of we drafted an OL. Just wish we saw a little more of Blake.

  7. RH709 says:

I have mentioned drafting a guard to replace Kupe. I personally think it is the way to go, especially with a deep Oline class. Personally, I would let Kupe go (nothing personal, mostly due to the injury) and let ManRam and a draft pick compete for the spot. Kupe has been pretty good but our Oline has more experience now so they don’t need the “veteran leadership” as much. ManRam improved greatly near the end of the year, so I would give him a shot to take the starting gig but he would still have to win it while competing against a decent draft pick.

Depending on how far along Philip Blake is, use him at guard or let him back up Walton and let Koppen go.

  8. RH709 says:

There is absolutely no reason to move Franklin inside. There were question mark a year or more ago but he has answered those. He is a solid right tackle and a beast in the run game.

  9. Broncos20 says:

I wont blame Moore for that game..I saw how Miller was held in check throughout the game. :/ testament to how we need a SOLID DT..

  10. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

    echo the BEEF!!!!

  11. strandoftds82 says:

There’s 55 more days until the draft.

  12. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

Margus Hunt would be a good pick IMO.Would enjoy seeing opposing QBs and RBs being the target of the Wolfe Hunt.

  13. Broncos20 says:

RH, I absolutely forgot about Blake.. He was a good C at Baylor handing off to non-other than RG3…although Kopen had a solid year..

  14. Broncos20 says:

Hunt!! Freakishly reminds me of Julius Peppers athletic ability and size

  15. louisianabroncofan says:

great read rh i like how they did that. I dont at all agree with saying the runner up to the mvp and the comeback player of the year is overvalued tho. that makes zero sense. i didnt like margo hunt but he sure showed me wrong, he looked great at the combine. I still would rather get a big dt in the 1st and dont see how we wont. unless we pick up two in free agency. i cant wait to see what late round gems elway is gonna bring in. i sure hope elway is gonna keep doing as well as he is because he so far has shown he can be a real dynasty builder. he very well may be the next great gm and bring us years and years of good football. still too early to know for sure but it looks good for the broncos!

  16. RH709 says:

LBF. you have to realize what they were doing. I agree that Manning is far from overvalued but that metric doesnt account for how Manning has made players around him better. just how he played compared to others and then his salary compared to others at his position.

Doom was slighly overvalued too but last year was his big cap hit. His cap hit is far less the next few years and if his play remains the same then he will be undervalued.

So the Metric takes it one year at a time as well and most contracts arent written to be even over from year to year.

Still a fun excersise and nice to see how they played and what they were paid. This also shows how drafting well is important as that is the largest likelyhood of getting value.

  17. Broncos20 says:

I have a feeling Hankins and Jenkins could fall to the second round… We need a powerful DT, not necessarily the biggest., that is disruptive and could collapse the pocket asap. A fast and powerful one.No Gerald McCoys or Suhs this year.

  18. RH709 says:

The way JDR has the defense playing, the DTs are suppose to play run first. Collapsing a pocket is secondary. Unfortunately, this often gives the opposing oline the upper hand in pass protection but thats what doom and miller are for. So our DTs wont get the pass rush stats but so what.

  19. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Even Gerald McCoy hasn’t been that impressive

Id just like to point out what a joy it is to have the same DC two years in a row. Seems like a dream.

    TRB

  20. Broncos20 says:

Not a lot of DTs worth 1st these days…I noticed that the good ones are the vets..Hampton, Wilfork, Ngata, Dockett, etc., these new generation DTs havent lived up their hype.. Sedrick Ellis, McCoy,etc,. Suh is an exception but his character has overshadowed that all…Even Marcell Dareus isnt as dominant as people expected..might be too early to say..but rare to find an excelllent DT w/ good character…. Derek Wolfe is shaping up to be one..

NFL Salary cap set to 123 million with a 900 K salary benefit. So basically 123.9 mil cap.

Franchise tag for OTs is set at 9.828 mil.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap1000000146225/article/leveon-bell-emerging-as-best-running-back-in-2013-nfl-draft

Much like last year with Doug Martin … Been trying to tell yall that Le’Veon Bell is the amazing. LBF sees it too. He got good speed for a big back. He is durable with a mean stiff arm and wicked spin moves. Hurdles defenders. he is nimble for a big man … he dropped down to 230 for combine probably to run faster but he is usually like 240 instead of 230 … he has the same bodily make up as steven jackson another reference i made that this article agrees with. He has the hands too. And who is at the top of the list for his services? None other than the Broncos.

    Later days,

    TRB

  23. louisianabroncofan says:

oh ya trb i love bell as a rb for us. i kinda and selfishly hate he’s showing his stuff so well at the combine because its opening alot of eyes that werent open before and he may be gone before we have a chance to get him. I think he’s elite myself or at the very least a top 10 back in the league year in and year out. I sure hope we get him. i disagree about mccoy. he’s really good and just getting started.

rh- ok i do see what your saying and i agree i just still hate to see it! and the fact jdr uses his dts to stop the run first tells me we will go after richard seymoure pretty hard. you are right about that and seymoure excels at it.

broncos20 i disagree with your assessment of the dt’s this class and in the league. heck theres sharrif floyd who is every bit as good as mccoy and suh and at least one maybe 2 others as good or close. i also think mccoy and ellis are very good dts. nothing to complain about anyway with those two. maybe dareus hasnt quite lived up to his draft status but he is also a really good and getting better player so bills arent complaining i can assure you. this is a great dt class. really is. tho i agree we need a powerful dt to take up blockers and stop rb’s in their tracks. thats why i say we go after seymoure.

  24. RH709 says:

LBF, the only caveat to that would be: is JDR doing that cause it suits the current personnel the best or is it his style and he wants his DTs to always do that?

  25. RH709 says:

Some people are upset that Wolfe didn’t get more sacks/pressures but based on what he does in the scheme, he never will.

Wolfe plays DE neutral or run does and always plays with a run first mentality. On Obvious passing downs (i.e. 3rd and long, 2nd and 20) Wolfe slides inside and Miller takes the edge. Wolfe again, plays a run first mentality often 2-gapping or eating a double team.

That is his role and he has been outstanding. This is why you hear Miller and Doom drop so much praise on the kid.

It seems to me like JDR picked a guy for this role and not that he used this role cause he had this guy.

So as LBF has said, don’t be shocked if Denver calls on seymore

  26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Get more sacks? kid got like 6 … thats plenty good enough when you are competing with von and doom. sheesh lol. He played solidly and played his role well. I just wish he could play inside more, OR we draft someone for the inside. We were the number one sack team … i think we got enough sacks lol. We just didnt adjust for the Ravens game, but they adjusted well to us. DL got owned by new OL and as a result Von was darn near nullified.

    TRB

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

LBF, Comparing McCoy to Suh McCoy might as well be none existent. He just hasn’t lived up. Much like many DTs over the years, think of any DTs we have wanted from the Dariuses, to Dontari poe, to marvin austin, to dan williams, to just about ever DT mentioned year in and year out. Yea some are solid, and some might be got rotational players … but some just fade into obscurity period. Impact DT is tought to find. U usually just end up with good enough or servicable i think.

    TRB

  28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

actually poe has been somewhat decent so far. he is growing. only 2 years in i suppose.

  29. wolfedom says:

Much as TRB and I were calling for Doug Martin last year I think Wolfe was an astounding draft pick so I guess I’m ok with it. Le’Von Bell is an animal and I would sure like us to pick him up this year. We need a big tough RB and he fits the bill. I still think we need to look at safety but if the front office is ok with what we have then I guess they know best. I still hope that they look at Jenkins from Georgia as the beef we need on the defense. Jonathan Franklin is another RB on my radar that I think would fit in real well.

  30. Bronco Rick 48 says:

    we need Reggie Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!
